All-inorganic CsPbI 2 Br is a promising candidate to produce the optimized balance between efficiency and stability. Unfortunately, the CsPbI 2 Br perovskite films prepared by solution methods often show numerous defects on the grain surfaces and a tendency for phase transition. In this work, we discovered that the proper amount of NiI 2 additive enables Ni 2+ doping in the perovskite interstitial lattice, while additional Ni 2+ ions serve as passivation agents on the grain surfaces; in particular, a profiled distribution appears from the film bulk to both the upper and lower surfaces. The special Ni 2+ distribution results in an optimized TiO 2 surface for perovskite growth, better perovskite film quality, superior charge extraction capability, and effective suppression of interfacial recombination. As a result, the CsPbI 2 Br perovskite solar cell (PSC) efficiency is increased to 15.88%, among the highest for its type. Also, the special Ni 2+ distribution endows the PSC with improved moisture tolerance. This work provides a promising strategy to overcome the surface/bulk instability issues common in PSCs.

It has been proposed that introducing the chlorine anion into a CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite material can substantially improve the materials properties as well as the solar cell performance. To elucidate the role of chlorine in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), here we introduced PbCl2 into the precursor, and studied the chlorine configuration evolution during perovskite film formation and the associated influence on PSC performance in detail. We found that chlorine could be successfully incorporated into the precursor film in the form of PbICl or PbCl2 through a properly designed preparation, and it was conserved in the final perovskite film with a configuration of MAPbCl3, PbICl or PbCl2 depending on the fabrication process. However, no evidence of a MAPbI3−xClx phase was observed, and it is considered that MAPbI3−xClx might be metastable or possesses a higher formation energy. In addition, we demonstrate that the formation of a porous PbICl scaffold in the precursor film plays a key role in high quality perovskite film realization, benefiting from an effective stress release during structure expansion after methylammonium iodide dripping. Moreover, we propose that residual amorphous PbCl2 can effectively passivate defects in perovskite film, and dramatically improve the film’s electrical properties. Finally, n–i–p type planar PSCs with efficiencies up to 19.45% were achieved. It should be mentioned that the whole process for the formation of the PSCs is performed at less than 100 °C, which is beneficial for a wide range of applications, such as flexible and tandem solar cells.

Hybrid halide perovskite films are becoming increasingly efficient in various applications, but several challenges still remain to be overcome. In this study, thermally polymerized additive N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) is utilized to tune the crystallization and orientation of mixed organo-metal perovskite films. Using in situ spectroscopy, it is demonstrated that NVP plays a crucial role in prolonging the crystallization process and separating the nucleation and crystal growth by forming an NVP-precursor intermediate phase. Additionally, the intermediate adduct effectively passivates defects, reduces nonradiative recombination, improves crystallinity, and enhances the transmission of charge carriers. NVP-containing perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are subsequently developed that exhibit stable and bright green luminance exceeding 240 000 cd m −2 . These findings provide valuable insights into manipulating the crystallization behavior of mixed organo-metal perovskite films.

Metal halide perovskites are ideal materials for optoelectronic devices. However, the optoelectronic performance and environmental stability of perovskite photodetectors (PPDs) are significantly affected by defects in perovskites, such as iodine vacancies. In this work, polymers with oxygen functional groups in the main and side chains are employed as the defect passivating agents targeting iodine vacancies in CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3). The oxygen functional groups in the side chains have stronger interactions with MAPbI3 than those of the main chains. This interaction helps to reduce the iodine vacancy, increase recombination resistance, and suppress dark current. Consequently, the responsivity and detectivity of PPDs are enhanced, achieving 0.147 A/W and 1.87 × 1011 Jones, respectively, while also enhancing environmental stability of PPDs. This work provides valuable references for selecting polymer passivation molecules that address defects in perovskite thin films.

Although metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have demonstrated remarkable external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) in red and green light-emitting diodes (LEDs), the blue ones confront efficiency and stability problems due to the high defect density in the perovskite films. Large amounts of defect passivation strategies are successfully developed to improve the device performance. Nevertheless, the influence of the molecular configuration of the passivators on the perovskite crystallization process has not been comprehensively investigated so far. Here, we investigate the effect of the phenyl ring on the perovskite crystallization dynamics and the passivation effect. The additive with a phenyl ring performs the π–π stacking ability with phenethylammonium (PEA+) molecules, resulting in a deteriorated crystallinity and a weakened passivation ability. Conversely, the additive without the phenyl ring is helpful to promote the participation of PEA+ molecules in the crystalline process, leading to a higher crystallinity and a stronger passivation effect. As a result, the EQE of the blue perovskite LED has increased from 4.72 to 11.06% by using the phenyl ring-free additive. Therefore, it is advisible to develop the conjugated nonplanar additives in the PEA+-assisted quasi-two-dimensional perovskites. This finding may enlighten the rational design of defect passivators for highly efficient perovskite LEDs.

The recent attention accorded to perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) can be attributed to their exceptional optoelectronic characteristics. In this paper, the perovskite emissive layer (EML) modified by two-dimensional material Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was explored with the aim of improving the morphology of perovskite films and the luminescence efficiency of PeLEDs. A doping concentration of 0.2 mM Ti 3 C 2 T x yielded optimal results for the PeLEDs, with a maximum luminance of 8317 cd/m 2 and a maximum current efficiency (CE) of 6.63 cd/A, representing a 200 and 103% enhancement, respectively, in comparison to the reference device lacking Ti 3 C 2 T x . It has been evidenced that doping Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene plays the role of enhancing the morphology of perovskite films and passivating the defects present in these films. Furthermore, Ti 3 C 2 T x facilitates the exciton recombination efficiency, enhances the radiative recombination of the emissive layer and thus improves the optoelectronic efficiency of the PeLEDs. This work presents novel concepts for the utilization of MXene in PeLEDs.

The poor interface quality between cesium lead triiodide (CsPbI 3 ) perovskite and the electron transport layer limits the stability and efficiency of CsPbI 3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a 4-amino-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoate cesium (ATFC) is designed as a bifacial defect passivator to tailor the perovskite/TiO 2 interface. The comprehensive experiments demonstrate that ATFC can not only optimize the conductivity, electron mobility, and energy band structure of the TiO 2 layer by passivation of the undercoordinated Ti 4+ , oxygen vacancy ( V O ), and free OH defects but also promote the yield of high-quality CsPbI 3 film by synergistic passivation of undercoordinated Pb 2+ defects with the CO group and F atom, and limiting I − migration via F···I interaction. Benefiting from the above interactions, the ATFC-modified CsPbI 3 device yields a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.11% and an excellent open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) of 1.24 V. Meanwhile, the optimized CsPbI 3 PSC maintains 92.74% of its initial efficiency after aging 800 h in air atmosphere, and has almost no efficiency attenuation after tracking at maximum power point for 350 h.

Copper (Cu)-based perovskites are promising for lead-free perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). However, it remains a significant challenge to achieve high performance devices due to the nonradiative loss caused by the disordered crystallization and lack of passivation. Crown ethers are known to form host–guest complexes by the interaction between C–O–C groups and certain cations, and 18-crown-6 (18C6) with an appropriate complementary size can interact with Cs+ and Cu+ cations. Herein, we studied the interaction between CsCu2I3 and two crowns with the same cyclic size, 18C6 and dibenzo-18-crown-6 (D18C6). Particularly, D18C6 can reduce the nonradiative recombination rate of CsCu2I3 film by passivating the defects and optimizing the film morphology effectively. The room mean square (RMS) decreased from 5.06 to 2.95 nm, and the PLQY was promoted from 4.71% to 19.9%. Besides, D18C6 can also decrease the barrier of hole injection. The PeLEDs based on D18C6-modified CsCu2I3 realized noticeable improvement with a maximum luminance and EQE of 583 cd/m2 and 0.662%, respectively.

Low-dimensional lead-halide hybrids are an emerging class of optical functional material but suffer the problems of toxicity and poor air stability. Among lead-free metal halides, tin(IV)-based metal halides are promising optoelectronic materials due to their robust structure and environmental friendliness. However, their photoluminescence (PL) properties are poor, and the underlying mechanisms are still elusive. Herein, a stable Sn4+-based halide hybrid, (C4H7N2)2SnCl6, was developed, which however exhibits poor PL properties at room temperature (RT) due to the lattice defects and the robust crystal structure. To enhance its PL efficiency, the Te4+ ion with a stereoactive 5s2 lone pair has been introduced into the lattice. As a result, Te4+-doped (C4H7N2)2SnCl6 displays broadband orange emission (∼640 nm) with a PL efficiency of ∼46% at RT. Interestingly, Te4+-doped (C4H7N2)2SnCl6 shows triple emission bands at 80 K, which could be due to the synergistic effect of the organic cations and the self-trapped state induced by Te4+. Additionally, high-performance white light-emitting diodes were prepared using Te4+-doped (C4H7N2)2SnCl6, revealing the potential of this material for lighting applications. This study provides new insight into the PL mechanism of Sn4+-based metal-halide hybrids and thus facilitates the design and development of eco-friendly light-emitting metal halides.

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have attracted great attention in recent years; however, the halogen vacancy defects in perovskite notably hamper the development of high-efficiency devices. Previously, large-sized passivation agents have been usually used, while the effect of defect passivation is limited due to the weak bonding or the large space steric hindrance. Here, we predict that the ultrasmall-sized formate (Fa) and acetate (Ac) have more efficient passivation ability because of the stronger binding with the perovskite, as demonstrated by density functional theory calculation. We introduce ultrasmall-sized cesium salts (CsFa/CsAc) into buried interface, which can also diffuse into the bulk, resulting in both buried interface and bulk passivation. In addition, the improved perovskite growth has been found due to the enhanced hydrophily after introducing CsFa/CsAc as additive. According to these advantages, a pure-red PeLED with 24.2% efficiency at 639 nm has been achieved.

During the solution-based fabrication of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the rapid and uncontrollable process of crystal nucleation and growth leads to the formation of numerous defects at the surface and grain boundaries, resulting in severe non-radiative recombination, which negatively affects the optoelectronic performance of the device. In this work, two passivation molecules, 2-(3-Pyridyl)-1H-benzimidazole (PBI) and 2-(3-Pyridyl)-1H-benzimidazole-6-carboxylic acid (PBI-CA), were introduced onto the surface of the perovskite film via a post-treatment method. PBI contains two basic functional groups, -C-N and -C N, where the nitrogen atom possesses a lone electron pair. PBI-CA has the same functional groups but also includes a carboxylic acid (-COOH) functional group, which contains both a carbonyl and a hydroxyl group, also having non-bonding electron pairs. The lone electron pairs in these functional groups exhibit Lewis base characteristics, which can coordinate with the uncoordinated Pb 2 + ions in the perovskite film, thereby passivating the ion defects caused by Pb 2+ . Compared to PBI alone, PBI-CA has an additional carboxylic acid group, providing more Lewis base sites, making it more effective in coordinating with Pb 2+ and passivating defects. We investigated the passivation mechanism of these two passivators through first-principles calculations and demonstrated their positive impact on PSCs through experiments and characterizations. The introduction of PBI and PBI-CA increased the size of the perovskite crystals, improved the power conversion efficiency (PCE), and enhanced device stability. The results showed that in a perovskite system with a bandgap of 1.6 eV, the PCE of the PBI-CA-modified device reached 21 %, higher than that of the PBI-modified device (20.3 %) and the baseline device (18.6 %), with significantly improved device stability. These Lewis base-containing molecules can be widely used to fabricate high-performance PSC devices.

Having a stable interface between perovskite and electron transport layer at p-i-n hybrid halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), has been considered to be crucial to improve the performance of device. Here, a two-step sulfur-containing molecules surface treatment procedure (TST) was utilized, which involves sequentially coating 2-thiazolamide hydrochloride (SFACl) and methylamine sulfate (MA 2 SO 4 ) onto the surface of perovskite film to achieve solid interface. Consequently, SFACl induced grains enlarged following a dissolution-crystallization model and formed 2D/3D heterojunction (n = 1); MA 2 SO 4 and residual PbI 2 reacted to form PbSO 4 , which priorly appeared at the grain boundaries. Owing to the interaction between sulfur-containing molecules and perovskite/PbI 2 , TST film showed improved photoluminescence intensity and prolonged lifetimes. Importantly, TST solar cell (Target 2) achieved a champion efficiency of 21.94 % for CsFA-based device (23.19 % for CsFAMA-based device, certified 23.02 %) compared with that of 20.05 % (Control). The improved device performance was primarily attributed to the larger grain size and defects passivation via multifunctional sulfur-containing molecules. Operational stability results shown that Target 2 device remained 78 % of the initial efficiency while Control remained 57 % of that under continuous illumination after 700 hrs in N 2 at room temperature, which can be ascribed to the stable interface inhibiting ion migration. This study offers a comprehensive understanding of sulfur-containing molecules surface modification in PSCs.
