Efficient and Eco-friendly Chitin Production from Crab Shells Using Novel Deep Eutectic Solvents

Ma Jinjing,Yu Yu,Chu Deyu,Zhu Shaomin,Liu Qishun,Yin Heng

Chitin is the second most abundant biopolymer in the world after cellulose and commonly found in crustaceans. It is also the most abundant natural nitrogen-containing polysaccharide. The challenge in separation of chitin directly from snow crab ( Chionoecetes opilio ) shells is that the solvent used must be versatile in removing calcium carbonate and protein while also being efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective. In this study, chitin was extracted from snow crab shells using a DES consisting of TEBAC and lactic acid. DES successfully removed minerals and proteins, with a deproteinization rate of 95.51% and a decalcification rate of 96.41%, while the purity of chitin was 91.15% and the yield was 21.31%. Furthermore, the extracted chitin has large pores on its surface, making it an ideal matrix for biomedical materials. This study provides an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution for the utilization of crustacean waste using multifunctional DES.

Development of a Novel Terpolymer as a Green and Efficient Decalcifying Agent for Crude Petroleum

Shuaishuai Ma,Peng Xu,Zhilan Cai,Hengfei Qin,Xiaofei Fu,Zewu Zhang,Zhaolian Ye,Jinjuan Xue

A novel environmental decalcifying agent was prepared with allylpolyethoxy amino carboxylate (APEAA), hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), and maleic anhydride (MA) by means of free-radical polymerization in an aqueous solution. The morphology and structure of the samples were characterized through scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectra. The molecular-weight distribution of APEAA–HEA–MA was determined by the gel permeation chromatography method. APEAA–HEA–MA was used as a green decalcifying agent to remove calcium from crude petroleum, and the impact of factors such as monomer ratio, copolymerization time, dosages, and desalination temperature was analyzed. It is found that the decalcification rate of APEAA–HEA–MA could reach to its maximum, and the calcium removal efficiency was approximately 97.88% when the monomer molar ratio of APEAA–HEA–MA was 1:2:5, the reaction time of copolymerization was 2 h, the dosage was 100 ppm, and the desalination temperature was 100 °C. This research work can promote the exploration on facile synthesis of a novel terpolymer and its potential application in refinery desalting processes.

Effects of pH on the nano/micro structure of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) under sulfate attack

Xin Liu,Pan Feng,Wei Li,Guoqing Geng,Jiale Huang,Yun Gao,Song Mu,Jinxiang Hong

Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), the most important Portland cement hydration product , determines the mechanical properties and durability of cementitious materials . In marine environment, C-S-H often suffers from sulfate attack – one of the most common and severe degradations for concrete. pH is considered as a critical factor in determining the deterioration behavior of C-S-H during sulfate attack, of which the significance may be overlooked. This study focused on the role of pH on the deterioration of C-S-H in terms of the composition and nano/micro structure under sulfate attack. The results show that lowering pH aggravates the decalcification of C-S-H, whereas a strong alkaline condition is beneficial to increase the resistance to deterioration. An increase in the mean chain length together with the proportion of large pores (>10 nm) is observed when C-S-H is subjected to low-pH sulfate attack (pH = 10–12), resulting in a relatively loose structure. The deep analysis on defective tobermorite model reveals that calcium at the interlayer of C-S-H nanostructure is readily removed under sulfate attack, thereby improving the potential of Si-O-Si groups formation and increases the mean chain length of C-S-H.

Decalcification and carbonation actions investigated during alkali activation-induced calcium (alumino) silicate hydrates C-(A-)S-H gel evolution

Yufei An,Yiping Su,Gang Li,Shuoyang Liang,Yingying Cai,Ruiheng Zhang,Xuehua Shen,Feng Yan,Zuotai Zhang

CO 2 capture through mineral carbonation extends the applicability of carbon sequestration by enabling storage in various cementitious materials derived from solid wastes. Calcium-containing cementitious materials receive extensive attention due to their potential for carbon capture, however, the underlying mechanisms both decalcification and carbonation during composition-structure evolution remain to be fully elucidated. Herein, a mineral carbonation strategy was reported to enhance carbon uptake performance, depending on the evolution stage of calcium (alumino) silicate hydrates (C-(A-)S-H) gel induced by alkali activation. Sequential dynamic monitoring and experimental characterizations confirmed that the decalcification and carbonation processes are closely linked to Ca-bonding states within the C-(A-)S-H structure. The results indicate that the short chains of alumino-silicate and the majority of the weakly bonded Ca phases are more prone to carbonation. Estimation of carbonation capacities also revealed that samples with 3h-activation exhibit the highest carbonation capacities (80.5 %), showing the higher carbonate potential with free Ca and weakly bound Ca (e.g. Ca(OH) 2 and interlay Ca in tobermorite-like structure) than samples with more intralayer Ca. Our work can provide new insights into the understanding of alkali activation induced decalcification and the improvement on carbonation capacities in early-formed C-(A-)S-H analogues.

Dual Role of Low-Cost Indirect Carbonation: Effective Carbon Sequestration and Decalcification Purification of Dechlorination Wastewater from Incineration Fly Ash Pretreatment

Qing Zhang,Linming Lao,Liangguang Chen,Longfeng Xu,Hao Zhang,Wenjing Zhu,Lilin Liu,Guangren Qian

How to reduce the amount of NaHCO3 used in the decalcification of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (IFA) prewashing wastewater is key to controlling the cost of IFA low-temperature pyrolysis. A novel route is proposed to replace NaHCO3 with CO2 and NH4OH for decalcification and generate vaterite CaCO3 with a purity of 98.15%. The effects of different chemical additives of NH4OH, NaOH, and NaHCO3 on the removal of Ca and heavy metals from IFA prewashing wastewater and on the crystalline phase of CaCO3 are systematically investigated. Ca-removal rate is near 100% at the molar ratios of NH4+/Ca2+, OH–/Ca2+, and HCO3–/Ca2+, which are 2.5, 2, and 2, respectively. Heavy metals are almost completely removed while the solution is carbonized to form CaCO3 coprecipitation. The presence of NH4+ favors vaterite formation, while NaOH and NaHCO3 promote calcite generation. Then, the environmental and economic performances of the three carbonization scenarios with Monte Carlo simulations are evaluated by life cycle assessment with life cycle costing. The use of CO2 coupling with NH4OH is always the best choice. Additionally, the successful demonstration of using real incineration plant flue gas decalcification provides a new pathway of IFA prewashing detoxification with short process and low cost without expensive NaHCO3 additive.

An advanced Ca/Zn hybrid battery enabled by the dendrite-free zinc anode and a reversible calcification/decalcification NASICON cathode

Shunshun Zhao,Chuanlin Li,Xixi Zhang,Na Li,Tongkai Wang,Xiaojuan Li,Chenggang Wang,Guangmeng Qu,Xijin Xu

The proposal of hybrid ion batteries, which can integrate the advantages of the single ion battery, opens up a new route for developing high-performance secondary batteries. Herein, we successfully constructed an aqueous hybrid battery comprised of polyanionic-type cathode material (Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , NVP), Zn metal anode, and aqueous Ca 2+ /Zn 2+ hybrid electrolyte. This exciting combination gives full play to not only the excellent diffusion dynamics of Ca 2+ in the NASICON (sodium super ion conductors) structure but also the electrostatic shielding effect of Ca 2+ with low reduction potential that inhibits the formation of zinc dendrites. As results, the NVP//Zn Zn/Ca hybrid battery delivers favorable specific capacity with outstanding rate performance (85.3 mAh g −1 capacity at 1 C, 60.5 mAh g −1 capacity at 20 C), and excellent cycle stability (74 % capacity retention after 1300 cycles).

Macrophage-Mediated Bone Formation in Scaffolds Modified With MSC-Derived Extracellular Matrix Is Dependent on the Migration Inhibitory Factor Signaling Pathway

Deng Moyuan,Tan Jiulin,Dai Qijie,Luo Fei,Xu Jianzhong

The positive role of macrophages in the osteogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has been a recent research focus. On the other hand, MSCs could carefully regulate the paracrine molecules derived from macrophages. Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hucMSCs) can reduce the secretion of inflammatory factors from macrophages to improve injury healing. hucMSC-derived extracellular matrix (hucMSC-ECM) has the similar effect to hucMSCs, which could combat the inflammatory response of macrophages. Additionally, MSC-derived extracellular matrix also enhanced bone regeneration by inhibiting osteoclastic differentiation of monocyte/macrophage lineage. However, whether hucMSC-ECM could improve bone formation by guiding macrophage-induced osteogenic differentiation of MSCs is unknown. Here, we present decalcified bone scaffolds modified by hucMSC-derived extracellular matrix (DBM-ECM), which maintained multiple soluble cytokines from hucMSCs, including macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF). Compared with DBM, the DBM-ECM scaffolds induced bone formation in an improved heterotopic ossification model of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice in a macrophage-dependent manner. Macrophages cocultured with DBM-ECM expressed four osteoinductive cytokines (BMP2, FGF2, TGFβ3 and OSM), which were screened out by RNA sequencing and measured by qPCR and western blot. The conditioned medium from macrophages cocultured with DBM-ECM improved the osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs. Furthermore, DBM-ECM activated CD74/CD44 (the typical MIF receptors) signal transduction in macrophages, including phosphorylation of P38 and dephosphorylation of c-jun. On the other side, the inhibitory effects of the DBM-ECM scaffolds with a deficient of MIF on osteogenesis in vitro and in vivo revealed that macrophage-mediated osteogenesis depended on MIF/CD74 signal transduction. The results of this study indicate that the coordinated crosstalk of macrophages and MSCs plays a key role on bone regeneration, with an emphasis on hucMSC-ECM constructing a macrophage-derived osteoinductive microenvironment.

Injectable, Hierarchically Degraded Bioactive Scaffold for Bone Regeneration

Jixing Ye,Ningyuan Liu,Zongxin Li,Liehua Liu,Ming Zheng,Xueping Wen,Nan Wang,Yanqin Xu,Biemin Sun,Qiang Zhou

Bioactive materials play vital roles in the repair of critical bone defects. However, bone tissue engineering and regenerative medicine are still challenged by the need to repair bone defects evenly and completely. In this study, we functionally simulated the natural creeping substitution process of autologous bone repair by constructing an injectable, hierarchically degradable bioactive scaffold with a composite hydrogel, decalcified bone matrix (DBM) particles, and bone morphogenetic protein 2. This composite scaffold exhibited superior mechanical properties. The scaffold promoted cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation through multiple signaling pathways. The hierarchical degradation rates of the crosslinked hydrogel and DBM particles accelerated tissue ingrowth and bone formation with a naturally woven bone-like structure in vivo. In the rat calvarial critical defect repair model, the composite scaffold provided even and complete repair of the entire defect area while also integrating the new and host bone effectively. Our results indicate that this injectable, hierarchically degradable bioactive scaffold promotes bone regeneration and provides a promising strategy for evenly and completely repairing the bone defects.
