Cashew Phenol Modified Lignosulfonate Strategy for the Preparation of High-performance Dye Dispersants

Jingjing Shi,Yanju Lu,Jianchun Jiang,Junming Xu

Lignin-based dye dispersants (LDD), as one of the most common lignin resource end-application product, is difficult to meet the rapidly developing needs of modern fiber dyeing due to their inherent structural defects. The efficient upgrading and modification of LDD is of great significance to the value-added application of lignin resources and the expansion of LDD sinking market. In this study, using industrial kraft lignin as raw material, cashew phenol was introduced into lignosulfonate in the form of C C bonds by ingenious utilizing the structural characteristics of lignin disordered condensation. Aromatic ring in cashew phenol could provide sufficient sulfonic acid group grafting sites, while C 15 fatty chain could enhance steric hindrance effect. In the dispersibility test, the dispersing power showed 99.09 %, and the low/high temperature dispersion (LTD/HTD) were 5 s/4 and 6 s/4, respectively, higher than the dispersibility level of LDD in the market, has great commercial value and industrial potential. Combined with FTIR, 1 H NMR, GPC and ICP, the structural properties of lignin were analyzed in detail, and the degree of sulfonation-condensation was balanced-optimized. The C C bond condensation process between cashew phenol and lignin was revealed, and the mechanism of action on dye particles was elucidated.

Synthesis and application of a natural plasticizer based on cardanol for poly(vinyl chloride)

Jie Chen,Zengshe Liu,Ke Li,Jinrui Huang,Xiaoan Nie,Yonghong Zhou

A natural plasticizer with multifunctional groups, similar in structure to phthalates, cardanol derivatives glycidyl ether (CGE) was synthesized from cardanol by a two-step modification process and characterized by FT-IR, 1 HNMR, and 13 CNMR. The resulting product was incorporated to PVC (CGE/PVC), and plasticizing effect was compared with PVC incorporated with two kinds of commercial phthalate ester plasticizers bis (2-ethylhexyl) benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (DOTP) and diisononyl phthalate (DINP). Dynamic mechanical analysis and mechanical properties testing of the plasticized PVC samples were performed in order to evaluate their flexibility, compatibility, and plasticizing efficiency. SEM was employed to produce fractured surface morphology. Thermogravimetric analysis and discoloration tests were used to characterize the thermal stabilities. Dynamic stability analysis was used to test the processability of formulations. Compared with DOTP and DINP plasticized samples, CGE/PVC has a maximum decrease of 9.27% in glass transition temperature ( T g ), a maximum increase of 17.6% in the elongation at break, and a maximum increase of 31.59°C and 25.31 min in 50% weight loss (T50) and dynamic stability time, respectively. The obtained CGE also has slightly lower volatility resistance and higher exudation resistance than that of DOTP and DINP. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132 , 42465.

Preparation of a liquid benzoxazine based on cardanol and the thermal stability of its graphene oxide composites

Guo-mei Xu,Tiejun Shi,Jianhua Liu,Qidong Wang

A novel liquid benzoxazine was synthesized by Mannich reaction of cardanol, paraformaldehyde, and allylamine. The benzoxazine structure was characterized by 1 H-NMR and FTIR. The liquid benzoxazine could dissolve easily in many solvents. The curing behavior of the benzoxazine was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and its curing temperature was about 233°C. A benzoxazine-functional silane coupling agent (BFSca) was synthesized with paraformaldehyde, phenolphthalein, and aminopropyltriethoxysilane. Graphene oxide (GO) was also made via improved Hummer's method. Then benzoxazine/GO composites were prepared using BFSca by solution blending and the curing behaviors of the composites were also characterized by IR, DSC, and thermogravimetric analysis. The minimum curing temperature and the highest 5% weight loss temperature for the composites was, respectively, 185 and 399.8°C. The SEM images of benzoxazine/GO composites demonstrated that BFSca had improved the dispersion of GO in the benzoxazine and also enhanced the thermal decomposition temperature of the composites. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Preparation of cardanol based epoxy plasticizer by click chemistry and its action on poly(vinyl chloride)

Leilei Yao,Qinhui Chen,Wenqin Xu,Zhibin Ye,Zhaodi Shen,Meijin Chen

In recent years, the using of reproducible resource and economical and efficient synthesis method has got wide concern. Herein, an environmental-friendly plasticizer originated from cardanol was synthesized by click chemistry. First, the cardanol sulfide (CS) was obtained by click chemistry reaction between the double bond of the side chain of cardanol and mercaptoethanol. The degree of the click reaction was estimated to reach 84.7% by testing the content of sulfur. Then, the epoxidation of the hydroxyl was performed to get cardanol based epoxy plasticizer (CEP) in the presence of epichlorohydrin. The epoxy value was 0.32. The structure of CS and CEP was confirmed by FT-IR and NMR techniques. A Haake torque rheometer was used to research the action of CEP on polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Results showed that it possessed favorable plasticization effect and stabilization effect on PVC. CEP had good heat stabilization in PVC, and could decrease the T g of PVC significantly. Moreover, CEP could increase the tensile strength of PVC when in a small amount, and could increase the plasticity of PVC when in a larger quantity significantly. The characteristics of volatile, migration and solvent extraction of PVC plasticized by CEP is similar to by dioctyl phthalate (DOP). © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Synthesis of a novel cardanol-based compound and environmentally sustainable production of phenolic foam

Bo Caiying,Hu Lihong,Chen Yong,Yang Xiaohui,Zhang Meng,Zhou Yonghong

A novel phosphorus-containing cardanol (PCC) derived from cardanol—a renewable meta -substituted phenol and harmful by-product of the cashew industry—in combination with 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) was used to produce bio-based phenolic foams (PFs). The properties of the PFs were then characterized in detail. The PCC was fully characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), while the thermal degradation was studied and monitored by thermogravimetry coupled to FTIR (TGA/FTIR) and TGA coupled with mass spectrometry (TGA/MS). It was found that PCC exhibited high thermal stability. The total heat release, peak heat release rate and mean heat release rate of PF containing 4% PCC decreased by 13.55, 33.43 and 13.42%, respectively, in comparison with pristine PF. The enhanced flame-retardant behavior was attributed to the free radicals PO· produced during combustion, which captured free radicals in the gas phase; moreover, the phosphaphenanthrene group may create a char residue barrier against the further combustion of the polymer. Meanwhile, bio-based PFs showed excellent mechanical properties, as the compressive and flexural strength of PF with 4% PCC increased by 79.59 and 20.98%, respectively, in comparison with pristine PF. The pulverization ratio of bio-based PFs was reduced with the increase in PCC content. The findings in this study demonstrate that PCC could be used as a phenol substitute in the synthesis of PFs to overcome their intrinsic brittleness and high flammability.

Improvement of β-cyclodextrin/cardanol inclusion complex for the thermal-oxidative stability and environmental-response antioxidation releasing property of polylactic acid

Zhongyang Yao,Qiming Cao,Chenyang Li,Weiguang Gong,Xin Meng

In this article, a β-cyclodextrin(CD)/cardanol (CA) inclusion complex (IC) was fabricated by co-precipitation method, which was used to guarantee excellent thermal oxidative stability and environmental-response antioxidation releasing property of PLA. The results showed that CA was successfully immobilized into β-CD with a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1, and the immobilization inhibited the migrant of CA from PLA during storage, resulting in the enhancement of antioxidant life of CA in PLA. Thus, PLA stabilized by IC (PLA/IC) maintained higher oxidation onset temperature (OOT) and molecular weight after long-term thermal oxidative aging. Moreover, CA releasing comparison from PLA/IC and PLA stabilized by CA (PLA/CA) in food stimulant suggested that PLA/IC released CA faster than PLA/CA when PLA contacted with food stimulants due to the solubilization of β-CD for CA, which would induce the quicker antioxidation of CA in food. In a word, IC can make PLA with longer anti-oxidative stability during storage and quicker environmental-response antioxidation releasing property during usage, showing strong potential as an active food-packaging materials.

Facile construction of cardanol-based epoxy vinyl ester resin for UV-curable, tough, anticorrosive coatings

Ying Li,Boya Xiao,Zengke Zhu,Yuhang Zhou,HaiYe Liang,Yi Cai,Qiquan Luo,Zhuohong Yang,Yang Hu

Epoxy vinyl ester resin (VER) has promising prospects in the anti-corrosion coatings application, due to their advantages including favorable chemical and corrosion resistance, remarkable mechanical strength and convenient processability. Nevertheless, traditional VER coatings are typically cured by time-consuming thermal treatment and exhibit poor toughness, making them inadequate for providing long-term corrosion protection to metals. In this study, cardanol-based epoxy vinyl ester resin (VER) was effectively constructed for obtaining UV-cured and tough VER coatings with long-term anticorrosive property. Herein, multifunctional cardanol-derived toughening modifier (CAMM) was firstly synthesized via thiol-ene click reaction between cardanol and 2-mercaptoethanol, followed by esterification reaction with maleic anhydride. Moreover, CAMM was grafted onto VER molecular to improve resin processability and coating film performances. Structural characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of CAMM and cardanol-based VER via Fourier transform infrared and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Rheological analysis indicated CAMM introduction effectively reduced VER viscosity. The optimized cardanol-derived VER coating film displayed the outstanding tensile strength of 76.53 MPa and toughness of 7.74 MJ m −3 , which were significantly higher than those of control VER sample with tensile strength of 57.44 MPa and toughness of 1.56 MJ m −3 . Additionally, the optimized coating film also exhibited the long-term anticorrosion performance with impedance modulus |Z| 0.01Hz of 6.42 × 10 9  Ω·cm 2 after 180-day immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solution, and perceptible antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . This work presents a promising approach to synthesizing multifunctional CAMM and high-performance UV-curable VER resins, which have great potential in the applications of anticorrosive coatings.

Preparation of internally-plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) by grafting hyperbranched cardanol epoxy polyglycerol

Zeyu You,Xiaoan Nie,Min Yu,Renli Fu,Jie Chen

A novel epoxy plasticizer (HCEP) with a hyperbranched polyglycerol structure was synthesized using reduced glycerol and cashew phenol as raw materials. Then it was grafted onto poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) through click reaction to form self-plasticized PVC. The structure of the product was characterized with various methods. The effects of the degree of internal plasticizer substitution on the properties of PVC were tested through dynamic mechanical, mechanical property, and thermogravimetric analyses. The amorphous dendritic structure of HCEP effectively enhances the free volume of grafted PVC, leading to a reduction in the glass transition temperature and a significant enhancement in flexibility at room temperature. The maximum elongation at break is 289.89%. The grafting of plasticizers onto PVC avoids the leaching of plasticizers during usage, providing a viable solution for reducing reliance on phthalate-based plasticizers.

An Epoxy Adhesive Mimicking the Mussel Mucin Used for Bonding Under Seawater

Meiting Fu,Kai Jin,Yue Zhang,Richmond Polley,Ruoyu Zhang,Shigang Yang,Debiao Liu

With rising interest in various offshore equipment, bridges, and marine engineering, it is necessary to develop an epoxy resin adhesive that can cure quickly under seawater and has high bonding performance. In this paper, through mimicking mussel adhesive proteins, a biomimetic epoxy resin is designed and prepared for seawater adhesion. A mussel dopamine-like structure with cashew phenol and catechol as the main structure is prepared by the Mannich reaction, and the amino acids in mussel adhesive protein are simulated by the addition of decamethylene diamine. The results show that the adhesive has higher seawater bonding strength (17.65 MPa) and tensile strength (30.31 MPa) under the condition of seawater solidification. The cross-section morphology of the adhesive is still a typical ductile fracture due to the adhesive retaining the toughened properties of the cashew phenol structure, while the catechol structure provides a stronger bonding ability. The apparent activation energy is 45.22 kJ mol −1 indicating in a high curing activity. The ions in seawater can participate in the bonding process of the adhesive, and non-covalent bonds can be formed in the process. The construction strategy that mimics the mussel adhesive protein structure can also be used to design other seawater adhesives.

Sustainable flame-retardant epoxy resins from cardanol: Phosphorus-containing curing agents and carbon nanofiber synergy

Yubo Chen,Siyuan He,Yaxun Huang,Liping Jin,Lei Liu,Yu Guan,Congke Gu,Chenpeng Ji,Wenwen Guo

With growing emphasis on environmental protection and sustainable development, developing high-performance bio-based epoxy resins has become a central focus to reduce reliance on petroleum-derived curing agents. This study presents a novel approach by synthesizing three types of cardanol-based flame-retardant epoxy curing agents, C1-DPP-MA, C2-PDP-MA, and C3-POC-MA, as sustainable bio-based alternatives to conventional petroleum-derived curing agents. The structures of these curing agents were confirmed through FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. Flame-retardant epoxy resins (DGEBA/C1-DPP-MA (EP1), DGEBA/C2-PDP-MA (EP2), and DGEBA/C3-POC-MA (EP3)) were prepared via thermal polymerization, with DGEBA/MHHPA (EP0) serving as a control. Kinetic analysis revealed that the curing activation energies of EP1, EP2, and EP3 were all higher than that of EP0, which can be attributed to the steric hindrance of the cardanol-derived curing agent molecules. Among the three cardanol-based epoxy resins, EP1 and EP2 demonstrated superior flame retardancy compared to EP3, with Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) values of 28 % and 27 %, respectively. UL-94 tests showed that EP1 achieved V -0 ratings. Cone calorimetry tests further confirmed their enhanced flame retardancy, with EP1 and EP2 showing reductions in peak heat release rate (PHRR) by 52.8 % and 37.8 %, respectively, and significant decreases in total heat release (THR). Additionally, the cardanol structure's long, flexible side chains improved toughness and elongation at break in EP1. Moreover, a carbon nanofiber (CNF)-reinforced composite (EP1CF) was synthesized from EP1, significantly enhancing its thermal stability, flame retardancy, and mechanical properties. This study introduces a promising approach for designing bio-based epoxy resins with superior overall properties, contributing to the advancement of environmentally friendly flame-retardant materials by synergistically incorporating CNFs with cardanol-based curing agents.
