Self-Lubricating and Self-Healing Polyurethane Nanocomposites Based on Aminated-Ti3C2Tx

Chunpeng Chai,Zhenqian Ma,Xuan Yin,Haosheng Pang

Self-healing polyurethane is a matrix material that can effectively extend the service life of composite materials. The layered two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx material has weak interlayer van der Waals forces, which can undergo slip and form transfer films during friction, reducing shear strength and improving the lubrication performance of the material. Therefore, we introduced two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx into a self-healing polyurethane matrix to improve the lubrication performance of the matrix material. A dual-ion self-healing polyurethane (SPU) was prepared using N-methyl diethanolamine, hexamethylene diisocyanate, and 1,3-propane sultone as raw materials. Ti3C2Tx was prepared by chemical etching, and NH2–Ti3C2Tx was obtained by chemically grafting amino groups onto the surface of Ti3C2Tx using amino-propyltriethoxysilane. Then, it was mixed into the SPU matrix to obtain the NH2–Ti3C2Tx/SPU composite material. Compared with pure SPU, the friction coefficient and wear rate of the system were reduced by 79.7% and 97.8%, respectively. Under 75%RH and 20 °C conditions, self-healing could be achieved rapidly within 5 min, with a self-healing efficiency of 84.4%. The kind of self-lubricating and self-healing polyurethane modified by amination-Ti3C2Tx is expected to be applied in automotive, electronics, and biomedicine.

Assessment of the tribological potential of self-lubricating alumina composites impregnated with Ti3C2Tx-MXene and MoS2

Sudesh Singh,Tianyi Han,Xinchun Chen,Chenhui Zhang

Although MXene and MoS 2 individually possess outstanding anti-friction and wear-resistant properties in numerous applications, the combination of both in the recent past has created a new frontier in cutting-edge applications. The current work insights into the impregnation of porous alumina ceramics in the MXene (1 wt %), MoS 2 (1 wt %), and hybrid (0.5 wt % MXene +0.5 wt % MoS 2 ) solution to fabricate self-lubricating alumina composites via vacuum impregnation method and afterward exploring the mechanical as well as tribological properties of the synthesized composites. A significant strengthening of the matrix for impregnated composites was observed compared to unimpregnated porous ceramics. The impregnated composites were slid against the zirconia ball to assess the friction behavior. The results revealed that the ceramics impregnated with MXene only can reduce COF by ∼43 % of that unimpregnated ceramics; however, in conjunction with MoS 2, the reduction can be lowered to ∼70 % attributed to synergistic effect of MXene and MoS 2 to form the tribo-layer over interacting surfaces. The study concludes that hybrid (MXene/MoS 2 ) impregnation of porous ceramics exhibits excellent self-lubricating properties over other impregnations, making them suitable candidates for advanced tribological applications. This novel combination leverages the unique properties of MXene and MoS 2 to enhance the longevity and performance of porous ceramics in demanding operational environments.

Tribological Performance and Enhancing Mechanism of 3D Printed PEEK Coated with In Situ ZIF-8 Nanomaterial

Xinchao Wang,Jiale Hu,Jiajia Liu,Yixin Liang,Lan Wu,Tie Geng,Shihua Liu,Yonggang Guo

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is esteemed as a high-performance engineering polymer renowned for its exceptional mechanical properties and thermal stability. Nonetheless, the majority of polymer-based lubricating materials fail to meet the contemporary industrial demands for motion components regarding high speed, heavy loading, temperature resistance, and precise control. Utilizing 3D printing technology to design and fabricate intricately structured components, developing high-performance polymer self-lubricating materials becomes imperative to fulfill the stringent operational requirements of motion mechanisms. This study introduces a novel approach employing 3D printing technology to produce PEEK with varying filling densities and conducting in situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanomaterials on its surface to enhance PEEK’s frictional performance. The research discusses the synthetic methodology, characterization techniques, and tribological performance evaluation of in situ synthesized ZIF-8 nanomaterials on PEEK surfaces. The findings demonstrate a significant enhancement in frictional performance of the composite material under low-load conditions, achieving a minimum wear rate of 4.68 × 10−6mm3/N·m compared to the non-grafted PEEK material’s wear rate of 1.091 × 10−5mm3/N·m, an approximately 1.3 times improvement. Detailed characterization and analysis of the worn surface of the steel ring unveil the lubrication mechanism of the ZIF-8 nanoparticles, thereby presenting new prospects for the diversified applications of PEEK.

Self-lubricating performance of a grinding wheel filled with CNTs@T304 nano-capsules

Jiju Guan,Zhengya Xu,Lanyu Yang,Zhiqiang Luan,Xuefeng Xu

This paper introduces a new grinding wheel which lubricates the grinding area directly. This is achieved by filling a resin grinding wheel with nano-capsules comprised of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and di-n-butyl phosphite (T304) (CNTs@T304). The CNTs@T304 nano-capsules filled grinding wheel reduces the grinding force, lowers the grinding temperature, and improves the workpiece surface quality. The T304 lubricant is first filled into the CNT cavity to prepare nano-capsules, which exhibit better friction and wear quality than CNTs. Then the paper analyzes the configuration of the nano-capsules in the grinding wheel, together with the investigation of how the filling content impacts the mechanical properties. Additionally, the effects of nano-capsule filling content and grinding parameters on grinding force, grinding temperature, grinding ratio, as well as workpiece surface roughness are studied and the self-lubricating mechanism of the nano-capsules is assessed. According to the experimental results, nano-capsules maintain stable under thermal condition and resist the curing temperature. Moreover, the tensile strength and hardness exhibited by the grinding wheel still meet the application requirements at a filling content <16 wt%. Compared with the grinding wheel without fillers, the nano-capsule filled wheel exhibits superior grinding performance, with a 33 % reduction in the grinding force. Also, the grinding temperature is 28 % lower, there is a 30 % improvement in the grinding ratio, and the workpiece surface quality increases by 35 % under the same conditions. The T304 in the nano-capsules is continually released onto the grinding interface with the wear of the wheel in the grinding process, which forms a self-lubricating layer along with the friction products of the CNTs. This exerts an outstanding anti-friction and anti-wear effect, thereby improving the grinding performance.

Robust, self-lubricating and injectable dECM-loaded hydrogels based on rapid photo-crosslinking for articular cartilage regeneration

Zhenxi Liu,Dong Zhang,Huili Kang,Xinyi Gu,Fangping Chen,Changsheng Liu

The restoration of articular cartilage poses a significant clinical challenge due to its avascular nature and the limited presence of chondrocytes. Recently, there has been a growing emphasis on developing materials that emulate the properties of cartilage to facilitate high-quality repair. Here, an injectable dECM-loaded hydrogel (HS-dECM) with potent compressive strength and self-lubricating ability was prepared by photo-crosslinking for cartilage regeneration. The HS-dECM hydrogel was formed by integrating cartilage decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) with hyaluronic acid methacrylate (HAMA) and sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA). Once injected into irregular defects, a robust hydrogel was rapidly formed in situ by UV irradiation with negligible heat release. The HS-dECM hydrogel exhibited robust compressive strength (898 ± 86 kPa), excellent fatigue resistance and a low friction coefficient, and had the feasibility of minimally invasive implantation. Besides, HS-dECM hydrogel promoted chondrogenic differentiation of BMSCs in vitro and repaired articular cartilage defects in rats. Therefore, the high-performance injectable HS-dECM hydrogel represents a novel minimally invasive strategy that significantly promote the cartilage injuries repair and regeneration.

Tribological Behavior of Self-Lubricating PEEK/Graphite/Ti3SiC2 Composites Under Dry Sliding Friction

Yang Zhang,Qingsong Li,Xi Xie,Guoxin Sui

Most polymers and composites suffer from high friction and wear due to their inherent lack of self-lubrication under dry sliding friction. Herein, the lamellar Ti 3 SiC 2 MAX material is prepared via vacuum sintering of a powder mixture containing Ti, Si, and TiC in the molar ratio of 1:1.1:1.8 at 1500°C under a pressure of 30 MPa for 2 h. Combined with a soft graphite phase (5 wt%), self-lubricating PEEK/Graphite/Ti 3 SiC 2 (PG-T) composites are successfully prepared, dependent on Ti 3 SiC 2 (5 and 15 wt%) as a hard reinforced phase and lubrication additive. PG-T composites are fabricated via a multistep compounding approach using a twin-screw extruder. The incorporation of Ti 3 SiC 2 and graphite within the PEEK matrix manifests a highly pronounced synergistic effect, which not only facilitates effective lubrication but also significantly enhances the load-bearing capability, thereby effectively circumventing direct contact between the counterface and the polymeric matrix. The sliding tests are conducted on the pins (diameter: 6.0 mm, height: 17.0 mm) and friction pair (45#steel, roughness Ra: 148 nm) under dry friction. In terms of PV-condition (up to 6 MPa and 3 m/s) (PV is a parameter that reflects the load-bearing capacity of polymer materials, which is defined by multi-plying the pressure P by the sliding speed V), PG5-T15 exhibits self-lubricating properties, featured by an average coefficient of friction (ACOF) as low as 0.119 for the pin-plate test and a specific wear rate (SWR) of only 0.58 × 10 −6 mm 3 /Nm. Meanwhile, PG-T composites present excellent thermal properties based on the thermal expansion coefficients (CTEs) and storage moduli (G′) during friction and wear. Considering the practical applications of tribo-composites, these findings highlight the potential of PG-T composite as a candidate for demanding tribological applications.

High-pressure synthesis and performance analysis of WC-cBN-MoS2 self-lubricating ceramic composites

Jiakun Wu,Haikuo Wang,Zhicai Zhang,Chao Wang,Zhiqiang Hou,Shun Wan,Dazhuan Wu,Xiaoping Ouyang

WC-cBN-MoS 2 self-lubricating ceramics were synthesized by using high pressure and high temperature sintering method. An analytical model of the self-lubricating properties has been developed to reveal the interrelationship between mechanical and self-lubricating properties. The influence of mechanical and self-lubricating properties of ceramics on the wear rate were analyzed. Self-lubricating performance optimization criterion are proposed accordingly. It was found that MoC, WS 2 can be formed during sintering, which can ensure self-lubricating and low temperature sintering properties. Adhesive wear is the main wear mechanism, the extent of which varies with the content of self-lubricating components. The high modulus of elasticity is the main reason for the excellent self-lubricating and mechanical properties of composites. The well-sintered WC-cBN-MoS 2 bulks present an excellent self-lubricating property with a hardness of 26.3 GPa and fracture toughness of 10.5 MPa·m 1/2 , which is improved at least by 52% and 46% respectively compared with the traditional self-lubricating ceramics.

An Liu,Ning Chen,Ping Liu,Geng Zhang,Xiyao Liu,Chao Ma,Song Gao

For realizing friction reduction and wear resistance across a wide temperature range, this study proposes a novel interface structure combining micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings on titanium alloy with MoSe 2 nanoparticles. Focus on investigating the tribological behavior of this structure across a wide temperature range (RT–500 °C) and its response to temperature. Through detailed characterization, the friction-reducing and lubricating mechanisms during wear were elucidated. The results demonstrate that this structure consistently exhibits friction reduction and lubrication capabilities, with low-shear MoSe 2 particles and molybdenum oxides enhancing the micro-pocket structure. This research provides valuable insights for developing integrated self-lubricating interfaces and improving the high-temperature tribological performance of MAO coatings.

Ultra-Wear-Resistant MXene-Based Composite Coating via in Situ Formed Nanostructured Tribofilm

Xuan Yin,Jie Jin,Xinchun Chen,Andreas Rosenkranz,Jianbin Luo

Newly emerging two-dimensional (2D) materials of MXenes possess lots of merits, which provide potential solutions for the lubrication issues in harsh conditions. Here, preliminary efforts were devoted to developing an MXene-based 2D composite coating and its antiwear interfacial performance in ambient environments. Macroscale and atomic-scale characterizations were utilized to explore the lubrication behaviors of the composite coating to clarify the influence of the coating composition and tribo-test parameters in the establishment of ultra-wear-resistant sliding interfaces. The results highlighted a unique lubrication mechanism for the 2D MXene composite coating. They suggested that the MXene/nanodiamond coating exhibited almost no wear when rubbed against a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) ball. A nanostructured tribofilm with unprecedented bonding features was in situ formed along the sliding interface. The ultra-wear resistance highly depended on the combined effects of shielding and self-lubrication of PTFE, layer shearing of MXenes, and self-rolling of nanodiamond. These discoveries clearly enrich the 2D material-based lubrication theories and offer technical guidance for designing and exploiting high-performance ultra-wear-resistant materials.

An intelligent self-lubricating organic-inorganic hybrid epoxy-based coating based on the “snowboard” effect

Zhiqiang Shan,Xiaohua Jia,Song Li,Jin Yang,Yong Li,Zhaofeng Wang,Haojie Song

The inherent brittleness, weak mechanical strength, and low wear resistance of epoxy resins (EP) have hindered their further application in protective coatings of mechanical parts. Herein, the soft organic polymer polytetrafluorowax (PFW) was embedded into the EP matrix under 120 °C to improve the mechanical stability and self-lubricant capability of organic resin matrix. Subsequently, multilayer graphene was obtained and functionalized by the sodium p-aminobenzene sulfonate (SPABS)-assisted mechanical exfoliation process, which was introduced into the EP@PFW polymer matrix to build a continuous inorganic reinforcement network. The “snowboard effect” generated by SPABS-G and PFW promotes load transfer and shear slipping during friction process and enhances the frictional stability of G/EP@PFW coatings. Compared to the EP/PFW coatings, the excellent heat transfer property of graphene promotes the rapid transfer of frictional heat within the G/EP@PFW hybrid coating and the dissipation of frictional energy, leading to a decreased friction coefficient from 0.16 to 0.07 (a decrease of 56.3 %, dry condition), and a decreased average wear track width from 0.56 mm to 0.36 mm (a decrease of 35.7 %). Importantly, the continuous graphene network leads to a greatly improved thermal transformation capability of the hybrid coatings, promoting its phase transition and substance migration in thermal environments and enabling self-repairing of a wide range of damages (abrasions and severe scratches) within tens of seconds.

Design and Strengthening of Superhydrophobic Coatings: The Influence of Intermediate Layers

Changyang Li,Peng Wang,Dun Zhang

The employment of intermediate layer technology to improve the mechanical stability of superhydrophobic coatings (SHCs) is an acknowledged tool, but the mechanism by which intermediate layers, especially different ones, affect superhydrophobic composite coatings is not clear. In this work, a series of SHCs based on the strengthening of the intermediate layer were fabricated by employing polymers with different elastic moduli such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polyurethane (PU), epoxy (EP) resin, as well as graphite/SiO2 hydrophobic components. Following that, the effect of different elastic modulus polymers as an intermediate layer on the durability of SHCs was investigated. From the perspective of elastic buffering, the strengthening mechanism of elastic polymer-based SHCs was clarified. Furthermore, from the perspective of self-lubrication, the wear resistance mechanism of self-lubricating hydrophobic components in the SHCs was elucidated. Also, the prepared coatings exhibited excellent acid and alkali resistance, self-cleaning, anti-stain, and corrosion resistance. This work confirms that low-elastic-modulus polymers can also play the role of buffering external impact energy by elastic deformation even as an intermediate layer, and provides theoretical guidance for the development of SHCs with robustness.

Self-lubricating and self-repairing epoxy coating enabled by ionic liquid-loaded double-walled Ti3C2Tx@PSF microcapsules

Ao Men,Liangliang Xiong,Cong Cai,Xiaoqiang Fan,Minhao Zhu

A double-walled microcapsule was fabricated by integrating Ti 3 C 2 T x onto polysulfone through electrostatic self-assembly, effectively overcoming the limitations of conventional single-walled microcapsules, such as inadequate thermal stability, premature release and susceptibility to breakage. By incorporating Ti 3 C 2 T x @PSF microcapsule loaded with ionic liquid (IL) into the coating, a self-lubricating and self-repairing anti-wear and corrosion resistance epoxy coating was developed and evaluated. The coating exhibited an 83.24 % reduction in wear rate, attributed to the uniform lubricating films formed by the released IL and the broken Ti 3 C 2 T x microcapsule. Additionally, the enhanced thermal stability of the double-walled structure helps to prevent the uncontrolled loss of the ionic liquid. For corrosion resistance, the coating containing 10 wt% Ti 3 C 2 T x @PSF@IL demonstrated the ability to withstand up to 40 days of salt spray exposure before notable corrosion occurred. This noticeable performance is attributed to the enhanced interface between the microcapsules and resin, the extended diffusion path created by Ti 3 C 2 T x , and the adsorption effect of IL. Herein, this Ti 3 C 2 T x @PSF double-walled microcapsule loaded IL provides an effective solution for high-performance anticorrosive and wear-resistant epoxy coatings in harsh environments.
