A Multi-Functional Fluorescence Sensing Platform Based on a Defective UiO-66 for Tetracycline and Moxifloxacin

Yanqiu Zhang,Yang Lu,Minrui Sun,Dechang Zeng

In recent years, the excessive use and disordered discharge of antibiotics have had sustained adverse effects on ecological balance and human health. The convenient and effective detection of these “emerging pollutants” has become one of the research hotspots in the environmental field. In this study, a defective UiO-66 material, namely UiO-66-D, was constructed for the sensitive and selective sensing of tetracycline (TC) and moxifloxacin (MXF) in water. By utilizing a modulated synthesis approach with concentrated HCl, stable blue fluorescence at 400 nm was achieved for UiO-66-D. The as-prepared UiO-66-D could conduct the inner filter effect (IFE) within a short time (10 s) when sensing TC and MXF, and the fluorescence of the UiO-66-D was quenched. In particular, when sensing MXF, a ratiometric signal response was generated due to the combined effect of the IFE and the fluorescence of MXF itself. The sensitive and selective detection of TC and MXF using UiO-66-D was free from the interference of common anions and cations in water samples. The detection limit (LOD) for TC was determined to be 70.9 nM (0–115 μM), while for MXF, it was found to be 33.1 nM (0–24 μM). Additionally, UiO-66-D was successfully used to recognize TC and MXF in lake water with good recoveries, demonstrating that UiO-66-D exhibits substantial potential in the recognition of pollutants in environmental waters.

The effects of pH on reactive species formation in moxifloxacin photocatalytic degradation via BiPO4 prismatic

Fan Yang,Xiaojiao Yu,Zongbin Liu,Kai Wang,Yuduo Liang,Juan Qiu,Ting Zhang,Jinfen Niu,Jie Zhao,Binghua Yao

BiPO 4 with a prismatic morphology is successfully prepared using a hydrothermal method . The phase of the as-prepared BiPO 4 is a monazite monoclinic phase. The pH of the zero point of charge is approximately 5 for the BiPO 4 . The effects of the catalyst dosage, initial concentration of moxifloxacin, and initial pH of the moxifloxacin solution on the photocatalytic degradation of moxifloxacin over the as-prepared BiPO 4 are first studied. In addition, cations such as K + , Zn 2+ , and Al 3+ and anions such as CO 3 2− , HPO 4 2− , SO 4 2− , F − , and Cl − are introduced into the photocatalytic system to investigate their effects. Furthermore, through reactive species trapping, it is proven that ⋅O 2 − can be converted to ⋅OH and N 2 can be reduced to NH 3 in acidic solution. This work provides an essential study of BiPO 4 for its application in photocatalytic fields.

Toxicity of Moxifloxacin on the Growth, Photosynthesis, Antioxidant System, and Metabolism of Microcystis aeruginosa at Different Phosphorus Levels

Liang Wan,Yan Zhou,Rong Huang,Yiying Jiao,Jian Gao

Moxifloxacin (MOX), a widely used novel antibiotic, may pose ecological risks at its actual environmental concentrations, as has been detected in aquatic systems. However, its ecotoxicity to aquatic organisms and regulatory mechanisms of phosphorus in eutrophic aqueous environments are still limited. This study aimed to analyze its physiological and biochemical parameters, including cellular growth, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic pigments, oxidative stress biomarkers, and metabolomics to elucidate the toxicity induced by environmental concentrations of MOX inMicrocystis aeruginosaat different phosphorus levels. The results revealed that the EC50values of MOX onM. aeruginosaat different phosphorus concentrations were 8.03, 7.84, and 6.91 μg/L, respectively, indicating MOX toxicity was exacerbated with increasing phosphorus levels. High phosphorus intensified the suppression of chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic pigments, while activating the antioxidant enzyme, indicating severe peroxidation damage. Metabolomic analysis showed MOX induced different discriminating metabolites under different phosphorus levels, and perturbed more biological pathways at higher phosphorus concentrations, such as starch and sucrose metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, and glycerolipid metabolism. This indicates that phosphorus plays an important role in regulating metabolism inM. aeruginosaexposed to MOX. The findings provide valuable information on the mechanisms involved in cyanobacteria responses to antibiotic stress, and offer a theoretical basis for accurately assessing antibiotic toxicity in eutrophic aqueous environments.

Moxifloxacin detection based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer from carbon quantum dots to moxifloxacin using a ratiometric fluorescence probe

Zhiwen Li,Jiyue Zhang,Qiyao Sun,Wenwen Shi,Tingxian Tao,Yingqiang Fu

A new method of ratiometric fluorescence detection of moxifloxacin (MOX) was developed based on carbon quantum dots (CQDs). Through a one-step hydrothermal method using soluble starch and acetic acid buffer solution as precursors, blue fluorescent CQDs with excitation wavelength-dependence were prepared. MOX could combine with CQDs to form a CQDs/MOX through hydrogen bonding. The absorption spectrum of CQDs/MOX and the fluorescence emission spectrum of CQDs overlapped to a certain extent, which allowed for fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) formation between CQDs/MOX and CQDs. For MOX detection, as the MOX concentration increased, the intensity of the fluorescence emission peak of CQDs decreased gradually, the intensity of the fluorescence emission peak of CQDs/MOX increased gradually, and the fluorescence emission peaks of CQDs and CQDs/MOX both had a red-shift. Based on the FRET system between CQDs and CQDs/MOX, a new method for ratiometric fluorescence detection of MOX was established. This method was more effective for MOX detection in the concentration range 3.3 × 10−7 to 2 × 10−6 M. Our method had high sensitivity and selectivity, and the limit of detection was 2.59 nM. The recovery rate of simulated water samples was 98.37–101.15%, which showed that this method was feasible for MOX analysis of actual water samples.

Co/Cd-MOF-Derived Porous Carbon Materials for Moxifloxacin Adsorption from Aqueous Solutions

Fuhua Wei,Xue Gong,Qinhui Ren,Hongliang Chen,Yutao Zhang,Zhao Liang

In this study, Co/Cd-MOFs were synthesized via a solvothermal method. The resulting material was subjected to calcination at 900 °C for 2 h and characterized using FT-IR, XRD, and SEM techniques to assess its efficacy in moxifloxacin removal. The experimental findings revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Co/Cd-MOFs for moxifloxacin was observed at 350.4 mg/g within a 5 h timeframe. Furthermore, the analysis based on the pseudo-second-order kinetic model demonstrated that the adsorption process adhered to this specific model. Additionally, the adsorption isotherm analysis indicated that Freundlich multilayer adsorption provided the best description of the interaction between moxifloxacin and the Co/Cd-MOF material. These experimental and theoretical results collectively suggest that employing Co/Cd-MOFs as adsorbents holds promise for wastewater treatment applications.

A novel sensor based on bifunctional monomer molecularly imprinted film at graphene modified glassy carbon electrode for detecting traces of moxifloxacin

Zhiming Jiang,Guangyu Li,Mingxiao Zhang

A novel selective and sensitive electrochemical sensor for moxifloxacin (MFLX) detection based on bifunctional monomer molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) membranes on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with graphene was constructed. A suspension of graphene was deposited on the GCE surface. Subsequently, a molecularly imprinted film was prepared by the electropolymerization, via cyclic voltammetry, of o-phenylenediamine and L-lysine as functional monomers in the presence of MFLX as the template molecule. A control electrode (NIP) was also prepared. The electrochemical properties of the MIP and non-molecularly imprinted polymer (NIP) sensors were investigated via cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), in which [Fe(CN)6]3−/4− was used as an electrochemical active probe. The surface morphology of the imprinted film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The fabrication conditions that affect the performance of the imprinted sensor are discussed. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the imprinted sensor had good linear current responses to moxifloxacin concentrations in the ranges from 1.0 × 10−9 to 1.0 × 10−8 M and from 1.0 × 10−8 to 5.0 × 10−5 M, with a detection limit of 5.12 × 10−10 M (S/N = 3). The developed sensor was successfully applied to detect moxifloxacin in tablets and human urine samples. Moreover, the fabricated sensor possessed good selectivity and stability, providing a promising tool for immunoassays and clinical applications.

Construction of immobilized 0D/1D heterostructure photocatalyst Au/CuS/CdS/TiO2 NBs with enhanced photocatalytic activity towards moxifloxacin degradation

Qinghua Chen,Mengmeng Zhang,Jingying Li,Guodong Zhang,Yanjun Xin,Chao Chai

Strong absorption in a wide wavelength range and effective charge separation are main factors for improving photocatalytic activity of semiconductor photocatalysts. Herein, immobilized zero-dimensional/one-dimensional (0D/1D) Au/CuS/CdS/TiO 2 nanobelts (Au/CuS/CdS/TiO 2 NBs) heterostructure photocatalyst with innovative morphology and appropriate band-gap configuration was synthesized for the first time. For this construction, TiO 2 NBs provide the 1D structure for a large superficial area and fast electron mobility, 0D CdS and CuS nanoparticles are the visible-light responsive nanomaterials, and Au nanoparticles serve as the surface plasmon resonance effect and electron transfer. The Au/CuS/CdS/TiO 2 NBs showed improved photocatalytic performance towards moxifloxacin (MOX) degradation, which can be attributed to the promoted photoabsorption contribution and enhanced separation and transfer of photoexcited electrons and holes. The morphology, constitution, optical and electrochemical properties of the prepared photocatalyst were investigated comprehensively. Moreover, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism and degradation by-products of moxifloxacin were studied. Results showed that the OH, O 2 − and h + are the main chemical oxidation species responsible for the degradation of MOX. Eight different photocatalytic degradation products were detected. The stability assessment showed that photodissolution plays the primary role in the photocatalytic performance decrease of Au/CuS/CdS/TiO 2 NBs. This work gives a promising strategy to rational design efficient hybrid metal-semiconductor photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.

Toxicity, biodegradation of moxifloxacin and gatifloxacin on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and their metabolic fate

Liang Wan,Yixiao Wu,Yan Zhang,Weihao Zhang

The novel fourth-generation fluoroquinolones (FQs) were developed to improve the antimicrobial activity and their utilization has rapidly increased in recent years. However, knowledge of the ecotoxicity and microalgae-mediated biodegradation of these novel FQs is limited. In this research, the toxic effects of moxifloxacin (MOX) and gatifloxacin (GAT) on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as well as their biodegradation and metabolic fate were investigated. The results showed that the toxicity of MOX to C. reinhardtii was higher than that of GAT, and increased with culture time. Chlorophyll fluorescence and pigment content analyses suggested that the decrease in photosynthetic efficiency was primarily caused by the inhibition of electron transport after Q A in PSII complex. These FQs induced oxidative damage in cells, and the antioxidation mechanisms of C. reinhardtii were analyzed. The maximum MOX removal of 77.67% by C. reinhardtii was achieved at 1 mg/L MOX, whereas the maximum GAT removal of 34.04% was attained at 20 mg/L GAT. The different hydrophilicity and lipophilicity of these FQs resulted in distinct findings in biodegradation experiments. Identification of the transformation products suggested that the likely biodegradation pathways of FQs by C. reinhardtii were hydroxylation, demethylation, and ring cleavage.

Photocatalytic degradation activity and pathways of moxifloxacin over metal ion-doped Bi2O3 nanofibres prepared via electrospinning

Fan Yang,Xiaojiao Yu,Zongbin Liu,Kai Wang,Qinggong Ji,Yangyang Chen,Ting Zhang,Jinfen Niu,Jie Zhao,Binghua Yao

Photocatalytic degradation technology is a potential way to remove organic pollutants from water. In this study, Bi 2 O 3 nanofibres doped with different metal ions (Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , and Zn 2+ ) were fabricated successfully using the electrospinning method for use as photocatalysts. Compared to pure Bi 2 O 3 nanofibres, the energy band gap and the recombination rate of photogenerated carriers were reduced in Co 2+ -doped Bi 2 O 3 nanofibers, which significantly improved the photocatalytic performance of the Bi 2 O 3 nanofibres. Typically, the moxifloxacin degradation rate was 98.2% after 70 min irradiation over Co 2+ -doped Bi 2 O 3 . Although h + , ∙O 2 – , and ∙OH were detected in the photocatalytic process, the dominant active species was h + . In addition, three degradation pathways containing 12 intermediates were proposed.

Photocatalytic elimination of moxifloxacin by two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets: Enhanced activity, degradation mechanism and potential practical application

Fan Mo,Yi Liu,Yingyin Xu,Qingsen He,Pengfei Sun,Xiaoping Dong

Residuals of antibacterial drugs (ADs) threaten human health and ecological equilibrium, whereas few efficient treatments have been developed. Using a photocatalyst of two-dimensional (2D) g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (CNNS) fabricated by the method of ammonium chloride assisted chemical blowing, a high-efficiency photocatalytic treatment was reported to eliminate moxifloxacin (MOX) as a fourth-generation quinolone. The characterization results indicated that the high activity of CNNS originated from its 2D morphology, large specific surface area and high separation efficiency of photogenerated charges. Furthermore, the photocatalyst dosage, MOX concentration and the pH of solution were optimized. Based on the detection of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and intermediates in the photocatalytic process, the plausible photocatalytic mechanism and the degradation pathways of MOX were proposed. The toxicity assessment implied that antimicrobial activity of the photocatalytic degradation products were weakened significantly. The synthetic CNNS demonstrated excellent stability and reusability during five cycles. Finally, we carried out photocatalytic degradation experiments in the simulated real scenarios of tap water, lake water and sunlight. This work suggested the CNNS had great potential for purifying ADs-containing wastewater.

Bio-synthesis of Co-doped FeMnOx and its efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate for the degradation of moxifloxacin

Anlin Xu,Donghong Wu,Ren Zhang,Siyan Fan,Albert T. Lebedev,Yongjun Zhang

Metal oxides can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade organic contaminants but are usually synthesized via chemical/physical processes involving extreme conditions and hazardous materials. In this study, an innovative bio-synthesis method with a strain of manganese oxidizing bacteria Pseudomonas sp. was developed to prepare multiple metal oxides consisting of iron, manganese, and cobalt (Bio-FeMnCoO x ) for degrading moxifloxacin (MOX) with PMS. It was found that the cultivation time, the dosage of Co, the polishing method are the key parameters regulating the PMS activation performance of Bio-FeMnCoO x . Under the optimal preparing conditions, the MOX degradation kinetic constant of obtained Bio-FeMnCoO x was 7 times that of the chemically synthesized peer. Analysis with XRD, EPS and SEM with EDS mapping showed an amorphous structure of Bio-FeMnCoO x with well distributed Fe, Mn, and Co. Radical quenching and EPR spin-trapping tests demonstrated that SO 4 •- and 1 O 2 were the main reactive oxygen species. The transformation products of MOX were identified by UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS and the possible degradation pathways were accordingly proposed. The respiratory test showed that the toxicity of MOX was reduced by approximately 69% after the degradation with PMS activated by Bio-FeMnCoO x . The study demonstrates the potential of biogenic metal oxides for efficiently activating PMS.
