Cobalt valence modulating in CoOx incorporated carbon nanofiber for enhanced glucose electrooxidation

Jiadong Hu,Hao Lu,Mingsong Li,Gang Xiao,Min Li,Xuemei Xiang,Zhisong Lu,Yan Qiao

Glucose fuel cells (GFCs) driven by abiotic catalysts are promising green power sources for portable or wearable devices . In this work, a CoO x incorporated carbon nanofiber (CoO x @CNF) catalyst with mixed valences cobalt oxides have been developed through partial oxidation of pyrolyzed electrospun Co 2+ /poly acrylonitrile fibers. The cobalt valence modulating could be achieved via regulating the incorporation ratio of cobalt acetate in precursors or the oxidation temperature of the pyrolyzed fibers. Electrocatalytic analyses show that the presence of CoO in CoO x @CNF will provide more active sites for glucose electrooxidation, and thus enhance the electrocatalytic performance significantly. As a result, the glucose fuel cell built with the CoO x @CNF anode containing both CoO and Co 3 O 4 delivered a maximum power density of 270 μW cm −2 , which is higher than that of other reported Co 3 O 4 based GFCs. This work provides a simple strategy to develop excellent transition metal catalysts for GFCs to expand their applications in portable and wearable energy devices.

Graphene carbon black as catalyst support: The influences of iron phthalocyanine loading and carbon black additive amount on the power generation performance of direct glucose fuel cell

Shuai Wang,Li-Hong Deng,Yi-Fei Du,Xian-Liang Song

Fast accessibility of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) species to a catalyst surface with the efficient utilization of every catalytic site plays a critical role in catalysis. Therefore, engineering of the structure and morphology of catalyst supports to both anchor and expose catalytic sites at three-phase-boundaries, accelerating the mass transport of reaction-species through the active sites, can be regarded as one of the most prospective methods to promote the efficient utilization of every catalytic site, giving prominent cell performance. Herein, two series of oxygen reduction reaction catalysts are prepared: reduced graphene oxides (rGO) with different loading amounts of iron phthalocyanine TFePc/rGO-X (X = 1,2,3,4 and 5); and TFePc/rGO-3 that is intercalated by different amounts of carbon black TFePc/rGO/CB-Y (Y = 1,2,3,4 and 5). The catalytic activities and stabilities of these catalysts were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry. As expected, the 3D rGO/CB/rGO network is demonstrated as a singular catalyst-loading platform, with interlayer spacing that could be elaborately tuned via a simple carbon black intercalation. This enables ORR-species to be efficiently transported to each catalytic site. Besides, the optimal catalyst of TFePc/rGO/CB-3 exhibits more positive ORR peak potential than Pt/C catalyst. More significantly, in a practical cell, the cell performances were highly consistent with ORR active and the first-best cell performance of 0.86 mWcm −2 in power density was achieved for TFePc/rGO/CB-3. This is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of rGO and carbon black, as well as the π-π interaction between rGO and TFePc.

A high-power glucose fuel cell for potential application in implant surfaces

Ming Yin,Jia Chen,Jinpeng Sun,Jinsheng Fan,Dongzhi Li,Zhijie Zhu,Shumin Liu

The glucose fuel cells (GFCs) leverage the implant surface as an electrode, representing an optimal approach for miniaturizing implantable power sources. A conductive hydrogel electrode membrane is crafted through in situ reduction and electrochemical co-deposition techniques by employing bacterial cellulose as a scaffold. This process enables the seamless integration of the GFC directly onto the implant surface. The integrated GFC exhibits an impressive open-circuit voltage peak of 0.894 V and a peak power density of 94.7  μW cm −2 . Additionally, the fuel cell demonstrates resistance to chloride ion toxicity under simulated interstitial fluid conditions. Although performance within horse serum is moderate, the methodology presents a viable strategy for developing GFCs on implant surfaces.

Grain boundary enriched CuO nanobundle for efficient non-invasive glucose sensors/fuel cells

Huijuan Yang,ShengBao Wang,Xingpu Wang,Pengyang Zhang,Cheng Yan,Yangyang Luo,Lina Chen,Mengjiao Li,Fan Fan,Zhiyou Zhou,Xifei Li

Glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) plays a significant role in glucose fuel cells anode and glucose sensors. Therefore, optimizing the GOR catalyst nanostructure is auxiliary to their efficient operation. In this study, we present a cascade-assembled strategy to prepare CuO nanobundles (CuO-NB) with high-density and homogenous grain   boundaries (GBs). The essence of activity in GOR that depended on GBs are thoroughly investigated. The increased glucose diffusion coefficient of CuO-NB means that GBs has a faster glucose mass transfer, which is attributed to the terraces in GBs dislocation surface. Furthermore, the accumulation of electrons on GBs makes the glucose adsorption increased and the free energy of dehydrogenation step decreased, leading to a lower glucose oxidation barrier. Therefore, CuO-NB is appropriate for non-invasive glucose detection and glucose fuel cells. This study sheds new light on the GBs effect in GOR and paves the way for developing high-efficiency electrocatalysts.

Pd-Pt loaded graphene aerogel on nickel foam composite as binder-free anode for a direct glucose fuel cell unit

Chi Him A. Tsang,D.Y.C. Leung

Fabrication of electrocatalyst for direct glucose fuel cell (DGFC) operation involves destructive preparation methods with the use of stabilizer like binder, which may cause activity depreciation. Binder-free electrocatalytic electrode becomes a possible solution to the above problem. Binder-free bimetallic Pd-Pt loaded graphene aerogel on nickel foam plates with different Pd/Pt ratios (1:2.32, 1:1.62, and 1:0.98) are successfully fabricated through a green one-step mild reduction process producing a Pd-Pt/GO/nickel form plate (NFP) composite. Anode with the binder-free electrocatalysts exhibit a strong activity in a batch type DGFC unit under room temperature. The effects of glucose and KOH concentrations, and the Pd/Pt ratios of the electrocatalyst on the DGFC performance are also studied. Maximum power density output of 1.25 mW cm −2 is recorded with 0.5 M glucose/3 M KOH as the anodic fuel, and Pd 1 Pt 0.98 /GA/NFP as catalyst, which is the highest obtained so far among other types of electrocatalyst.

Ligand effect of PdRu on Pt-enriched surface for glucose complete electro-oxidation to carbon dioxide and abiotic direct glucose fuel cells

Yichi Guan,Dezhi Su,Yan Zhang,Bowen Zhang,Yanyi Liu,Pengcheng Liu,Lishou Ban,Tao Qin,Kaili Wang,Ganghui Chu,Xijun Liu,Jia He

The development of advanced electrocatalysts for the abiotic direct glucose fuel cells (ADGFCs) is critical in the implantable devices in living organisms. The ligand effect in the Pt shell-alloy core nanocatalysts is known to influence the electrocatalytic reaction in interfacial structure. Herein, we reported the synthesis of ternary Pt@PdRu nanoalloy aerogels with ligand effect of PdRu on Pt-enriched surface through electrochemical cycling. Pt@PdRu aerogels with optimized Pt surface electronic structure exhibited high mass activity and specific activity of Pt@PdRu about 450 mA·mgPt-1 and 1.09 mA·cm-2, which were 1.4 and 1.6 times than that of commercial Pt/C. Meanwhile, Pt@PdRu aerogels have higher electrochemical stability comparable to commercial Pt/C. In-situ FTIR spectra results proved that the glucose oxidation reaction on Pt@PdRu aerogels followed the CO-free direct pathway reaction mechanism and part of the products are CO2 by completed oxidation. Furthermore, the ADGFC with Pt@PdRu ultrathin anode catalyst layer showed a much higher power density of 6.2 mW·cm−2 than commercial Pt/C (3.8 mW·cm-2). To simulate the blood fuel cell, the Pt@PdRu integrated membrane electrode assembly was exposed to glucose solution and a steady-state open circuit of approximately 0.6 V was achieved by optimizing the glucose concentration in cell system.

Energy-efficient mineralization of perfluorooctanoic acid: Biomass energy driven solar photo-electro-fenton catalysis and mechanism study

Yang Wang,Shuaishuai Li,Yanming Shao,Liming Jing,Rongkai Ren,Liweng Ma,Xu Wang,Zhijian Li,Jianzhi Wang,Chen Hou

The smart eco-friendly biomass energy driven electrical degradation system was established by coupling of glucose fuel cells (GFC) and solar photo-electro-Fenton (SPEF) processes, which was proposed for the green, economical and efficient degradation of perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA). The CoFe alloy nanoparticles with oxygen defects (O*) based on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were decorated on polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-driven carbon nanofiber (CNF) membrane to obtain the bifunctional photocathode (CoFe-OVs@CNF) with both extraordinary photo-catalytic and electro-catalytic abilities. PFOA was highly mineralized on CoFe-OVs@CNF through the synergy of photocatalytic oxidation and electro-Fenton processes. Moreover, the energy consumption for degradation was generated from direct electro-oxidation of glucose as the clean power on anode (GFC). The possible mechanism and degradation pathway for PFOA mineralization was investigated in detail according to intermediate analysis, active species verification and the valence state change of Co and Fe on cathode. Besides, the toxicity evolution during PFOA degradation was also evaluated to deeper insight into risk assessment of intermedia products and relative toxicity, intending to prove the potential for practical elimination of PFOA and other toxicity recalcitrant pollutants in wastewater by GFC-SPEF system.
