Slurry spin coating is an effective approach for the fabrication of protonic ceramic electrolyte thin films. However, weak adhesion between the electrode and spin-coated electrolyte layers in electrochemical cells due to the low sinterability of the proton-conducting perovskite materials usually lead to a high interfacial resistance and thus a low performance. Herein, we report a method to improve the interfacial connection and boost the performance of protonic ceramic cells based on a BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (BZCY) electrolyte. Ni-BZCY anode functional layer, BZCY electrolyte layer and La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ-BZCY cathode functional layer are all fabricated by slurry spin coating. The electrode functional layers and the components of the electrolyte slurry influence the microstructure of the single cell and the kinetics of the electrochemical processes significantly. A peak power density of 2345 mW cm–2 is achieved at 700 °C in the fuel cell mode, and a current density of –3.0 A cm–2 is obtained at an applied voltage of 1.3 V in the electrolysis mode.

Using symmetrical electrodes with the same material compositions can simplify the manufacturing process, reduce cost, and enhance the stability and reliability of solid oxide cells. Herein, we report for the first time the potential application of the La 0.3 Sr 0.7 Fe 0.7 Cr 0.3 O 3-δ (LSFC) perovskite as a symmetrical electrode for reversible protonic ceramic cells (RPCCs). The LSFC exhibits robust chemical stability in oxidizing and reducing environments and favorable chemical compatibility with BaZr 0.4 Ce 0.4 Y 0.15 Zn 0.05 O 3-δ electrolyte below 950 °C. Using LSFC as a symmetrical electrode, the electrolyte-supported RPCC delivers a maximum power density of 76 mW cm −2 in fuel cell (FC) mode at 700 °C, and a maximum current density of 30 mA cm −2 in electrolysis cell (EC) mode at 1.5 V; no significant degradation is shown under both FC and EC modes during 100 h continuous operation. The LSFC shows remarkably low polarization resistances (R p ) of 0.06 and 0.07 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C in dry and wet air, which allows it to be used directly as an air electrode; while it is 3.46 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C in 5%H 2 /Ar, which needs to improve its catalytic activity to enhance the overall performance of symmetrical electrode. These results allow us to propose a feasible strategy for applying symmetrical electrodes in RPCCs.

Reversible protonic ceramic cells (R-PCCs) have been in the spotlight as prominent electrochemical devices for green hydrogen production and utilization. The design of efficient air electrodes is critical for enhancing cell performances, requiring high hydration ability, excellent catalytic activities, and appropriate thermal expansion coefficients (TEC). Herein, novel high-entropy oxides La(Co 0.2 Cu 0.2 Fe 0.2 Ni 0.2 Me 0.2 )O 3– δ (Me = Al, Mn, Cr) featuring five cations at B-site of ABO 3 perovskite are presented. La(Co 0.2 Cu 0.2 Fe 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cr 0.2 )O 3– δ (LCCFN-Cr) catalyst exhibits the best proton incorporation ability and catalytic activities among three oxides, concluded by analyzing the oxygen vacancy concentration and the chemical bond information. Moreover, the high-entropy effect at B-site reduced the TEC of this Co-contained oxide to a modest extent through large-ratio substitution of Co by other cations. When applied as an air electrode, the BaZr 0.6 Ce 0.2 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3– δ electrolyte-based R-PCCs yielded a high current density of 2.14 A cm −2 and a peak power density of 0.60 W cm −2 , with an extremely low polarization resistance of 0.05 Ω cm 2 at 650 °C. These findings not only provide a novel air electrode for R-PCCs, but also demonstrate a pathway to design effective oxide catalysts for other energy conversion devices by integrating the advantages of Co and high-entropy effect.

Here we use the electrochemical hydrogen pump derived from a protonic ceramic cell (PCC) to realize the first demonstration of separating hydrogen from simulated peanut shell pyrolysis gas (64% H 2 , 26% CO, 4% CO 2 , and 6% CH 4 ). The single PCC is configured with a thick Ni–BaCe 0.7 Zr 0·1 Y 0·2 O 3-δ cathode, a thin BaCe 0·7 Zr 0·1 Y 0·18 Fe 0·02 O 3-δ electrolyte, and an Ag–Ce 0.8 Gd 0.2 O 1.9 anode with an effective area of 1.5 cm 2 . At 650 °C and a feeding current density of −500 mA cm −2 , a hydrogen flux of 2.34 ml min −1 cm −2 , a Faradaic efficiency of 62%, and a hydrogen recovery rate of 29% are achieved. In addition, 20 wt% Ni is mixed into the Ag-GDC electrode to achieve a hydrogen flux of 3.68 ml min −1 cm −2 and a Faradaic efficiency of 97%. Additionally, a 20-h measurement for PCCs with the Ni-mixed electrode shows the hydrogen fluxes and Faradaic efficiencies of above 1.49 ml min −1 cm −2 and 98%, respectively.

Reversible proton ceramic cells (R-PCCs) offer a transformative solution for dual functionality in power generation and energy storage. However, their potential is currently obstacles by the lack of high-performance air electrodes combining high electrocatalytic activity with durability. Here, an innovative air electrode composed of high-entropy driven self-assembled xNiO-Pr 0.2 La 0.2 Ba 0.2 Sr 0.2 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.8 Ni 0.2−x O 3−δ (N-XFN) composites is presented, which result from the unique lattice distortion effects inherent in high-entropy perovskites. The experimental results coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify that the lattice distortion at the high-entropy A-site significantly induces NiO nanoparticles exsolved from the B-site, promoting the formation of a biphasic composite structure that dramatically increases the electrochemical active sites. Remarkably, R-PCCs using the N-XFN composite air electrode achieve an impressive peak power density of 1.30 W cm −2 in fuel cell mode and a current density of -2.52 A cm −2 at 1.3 V in electrolysis mode at 650 °C. In addition, the cells show excellent stability with reversibility over 830 h, including 500 h in electrolysis mode and 330 h in reversible operation at 650 °C. This research provides important insights into the design of high-entropy perovskites, paving the way for advanced R-PCCs technology.

Protonic ceramic cells (PCCs) are recognized as a promising energy conversion technology for green hydrogen and electricity production owing to their high efficiency, all-solid-state structure, and exceptional reversibility. However, the inadequate mechanical strength of proton-conducting electrolytes remains a critical challenge hindering the widespread application of PCCs. In this study, a cation regulation strategy is employed to enhance the electrolyte mechanical strength by doping silicon (Si) at the B-site of the conventional proton-conducting material BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3 − δ (BZCYYb). The optimized Ba(Zr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 ) 0.99 Si 0.01 O 3 − δ (BZCYYbSi) demonstrates significantly improved grain boundary conductivity, structural stability, and mechanical strength, achieving a hardness of 3.11 GPa—1.5 times greater than that of pristine BZCYYb (1.14 GPa). The PCC incorporating a thin-film BZCYYbSi electrolyte exhibits a peak power density of 1.179 W cm −2 at 600 °C in fuel cell mode and an electrolysis current density of 1.591 A cm −2 at 1.3 V/600 °C, outperforming the BZCYYb-based counterpart (0.994 W cm −2 and 1.244 A cm −2 ). Additionally, the BZCYYbSi-based PCC maintains a stable operation for over 370 h at 550 °C in a continuous discharge and electrolysis situation. This work provides new insights for the design and fabrication of mechanically strengthened and high-performance electrolytes for low-temperature PCCs.

Reversible protonic ceramic cells (R-PCCs) are a kind of distinguished long-time energy conversion and storage device. The utilization of oxygen electrodes is vital to achieve high electrochemical performances for R-PCCs, demanding high catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and appropriate thermal expansion coefficients (TEC). Herein, novel high-entropy perovskites Pr 0.2 Ba 0.2 Sr 0.2 La 0.2 Nd 0.2 MeO 3-δ (Me = Co, Fe, Mn) are explored. Pr 0.2 Ba 0.2 Sr 0.2 La 0.2 Nd 0.2 CoO 3-δ (PBSLNC) exhibits a TEC of 12.02 × 10 −6 K −1 , which is thermomechanical compatible with BaCe 0.7 Zr 0.1 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ (BCZYYb) electrolyte. The cell with PBSLNC electrode delivers a peak power density of 0.87 W cm −2 in fuel cell (FC) mode and a current density of −1.39 A cm −2 at 1.3V and 650 °C under H 2 O electrolysis (EC) mode. The R-PCCs with PBSLNC electrode also achieve a distinguished current density of −1.45 A cm −2 at 1.3 V and 700 °C under CO 2 -H 2 O co-electrolysis condition. Moreover, the R-PCCs with PBSLNC electrode demonstrate exceptional stability for 150 h in both FC and EC modes, 96 h in H 2 O-CO 2 co-electrolysis mode, and 100 h (10 cycles) in reversible mode. This research provides a novel oxygen electrode for R-PCCs, as well as a strategy to design efficient Co-based oxide catalysts with low TEC for advanced R-PCCs.

Protonic ceramic cells (PCCs) can convert the energy between electricity and fuels efficiently, and are attracting increasing attention. However, the development of PCCs is restricted by the lack of proper positrode materials. In this work, we report a Co-free system with a nominal composition of BaCe 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ , which is composed of a Fe-rich matrix phase decorated with Ce-rich nanoparticles. The performance of such a dual-phase positrode system is further improved by doping Zn and/or Ni to increase bulk and surficial concentration of oxygen vacancies. The hydration reaction and surficial adsorption of oxygen species are thereby promoted, benefitting the oxygen reduction reaction. The Ni and Zn co-doped composition Ba(Ce 0.2 Fe 0.8 ) 0.85 (Ni 0.5 Zn 0.5 ) 0.15 O 3-δ exhibits lower polarization resistance than the pristine and singly doped systems, enabling the fuel cells to show high peak power densities of 400, 721, and 828 mW cm −2 at 550, 600, and 650 °C, respectively.
