Preparation of Fe3O4/TiO2-N-GO sonocatalyst and using for humic acid removal with the assist of ultrasound

Nannan Geng,Wei Chen,Hang Xu,Tao Lin,Mingmei Ding,Yi Wang,Hui Tao,Kai Hu

In order to remove the humic acid (HA) from the drinking water efficiently, novel quaternary Fe 3 O 4 /TiO 2 –N-GO (FTNG) sonocatalysts with different amounts of Fe 3 O 4 were simply synthesized, and a sono-photocatalytic system was used by combining photocatalysis and ultrasound processes. A series of characterizations were performed to confirm the successful synthesis of FTNG and some of its properties, and the results showed that FTNG with an appropriate amount of Fe 3 O 4 can extend the range of light absorption to over 400nm (UV-vis spectra) and improve the separation efficiency of electrons and holes (Photocurrent responses). Raman spectra indicated the reduction of GO. Sono-photocatalytic performance was investigated under visible light irradiation and the effect of ultrasound was studied. Among all the catalysts, FTNG-0.2 with 0.2 g Fe 3 O 4 , exhibited the best HA removal abilities, about 80% for sono-adsorption and 93% for sono-photocatalysis. The removal efficiency in sono-photocatalytic system was about 42% higher than only adsorption and 26% higher than only photocatalysis. Finally, we proposed the possible reaction mechanisms. First, ultrasound pretreatment had a positive effect on HA removal, and a Fenton-like system was then established with H 2 O 2 produced by cavitation effect. Second, the doping of Fe 3 O 4 , N and GO improved the quantum efficiency. The improvement of visible light catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the doping of N. This work is significant for the field of ultrasonic and catalytic degradation, especially for the removal of humic acid in drinking water.

Ultrasound-driven ferroelectric polarization of TiO2/Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 heterojunctions for improved sonocatalytic activity

Mingxuan Sun,Xiaojing Lin,Xianglong Meng,Wenzhu Liu,Zhipeng Ding

Herein, a series of TiO 2 /Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 heterojunctions with different mass ratio are first constructed under ultrasound irradiation, which shows superior sonocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties. The improved performance is attributed to the internal electric field and close interfacial contact of TiO 2 and Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 , which promote the transfer of photoinduced electrons from TiO 2 to Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 . The spontaneous polarization of ferroelectrics in the heterostructures can be adjusted by ultrasonic treatment durations, which further influences the internal electric field. The TiO 2 /Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 sample with mass ratios of 5:1 and ultrasonic treatment for 15 min presents the highest sonocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B. Moreover, the sonocatalytic activity also shows a close relevant to the ultrasonic temperature and frequency of degradation process. And, the •OH radicals are mainly responsible for Rhodamine B sonodegradation. This work provides a novel TiO 2 /Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 heterojunctions and promotes the application of ferroelectrics modified materials in sono-/photo-catalysis.

Sonocatalytical Nanoparticles with Persistent Action after Ceasing Ultrasound for Water Disinfection

Zeinab Marfavi,Yijun Han,Yuhao Cai,Quanjie Lv,Kang Sun,Congli Yuan,Ke Tao

Efficient water contaminant removal is critical for ecological and environmental sustainability. Developing energy-efficient, cost-effective catalysts compatible with existing water treatment systems is essential. This study introduces NdYVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles as promising sonocatalysts, capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) during ultrasound (US) exposure and maintaining persistent ROS activity for up to 12 h postexposure. These nanoparticles effectively degraded methylene orange and rhodamine B and demonstrated significant antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The findings were further validated by using nanoparticle-coated industrial ceramic plates. This work provides an alternative procedure for US-triggered ROS production and suggests that NdYVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles might be promising in sonocatalytic water treatment.

Synthesis of magnetically recyclable cauliflower-like sonocatalyst yttrium doped ZrO2 and sonocatalytic degradation of organic dye

Yingying Huang,Jinlong Li,Liming Bai,Xi Chen,Shijie Chen,Huishu Zhang

A magnetically recyclable cauliflower-like yttrium-doped ZrO 2 was successfully prepared via the template method. The phase and morphology of the synthesized sonocatalyst were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. The optical properties of the synthesized sonocatalyst were analysed by XPS, DRS and PL. The results showed that when the amount of sonocatalyst Er:YAG/(Fe 3 O 4 @Y-ZrO 2 ) was 1 g/L and the concentration of methylene blue (MB) was 5 mg/L under ultrasonic irradiation for 150 min, the synthesized sonocatalyst showed excellent sonocatalytic activity, and the degradation ratio of MB was up to 91.4 %. In addition, after 5 repeated experiments, Er:YAG/(Fe 3 O 4 @Y-ZrO 2 ) showed similar sonocatalytic activities, indicating that the synthesized sonocatalysts have excellent structural stability and recyclability. Through a comprehensive analysis of experimental results and discussions, this paper elucidates insights into enhancing sonocatalytic degradation efficiency caused by Er:YAG/(Fe 3 O 4 @Y-ZrO 2 ) and proposes potential mechanisms underlying sonocatalytic degradation of MB, thereby contributing to the development of effective strategies for sonocatalytic degradation of organic dye.

Titanium-based MAX-phase with sonocatalytic activity for degradation of oxytetracycline antibiotic

Samira Haddadi,Alireza Khataee,Samira Arefi-Oskoui,Behrouz Vahid,Yasin Orooji,Yeojoon Yoon

In light of growing environmental concerns over emerging contaminants in aquatic environments, antibiotics in particular, have prompted the development of a new generation of effective sonocatalytic systems. In this study, a new type of nano-laminated material, Ti 2 SnC MAX phase, is prepared, characterized, and evaluated for the sonocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) antibiotic. A variety of identification analyses, including X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, were conducted to determine the physicochemical properties of the synthesized catalyst. By optimizing the operating factors, total degradation of OTC occurs within 120 min with 1 g L -1 catalyst, 10 mg L -1 OTC, at natural pH of 7.1 and 150 W ultrasonic power. The scavenger studies conclude that the singlet oxygen and superoxide ions are the most active species during the sonocatalytic reaction. Based on the obtained data and GC–MS analysis, a possible sonocatalytic mechanism for the OTC degradation in the presence of Ti 2 SnC is proposed. The catalyst reusability within eight consecutive runs reveals the proper stability of Ti 2 SnC MAX phase. The results indicate the prospect for MAX phase-based materials to be developed as efficient sonocatalysts in the treatment of antibiotics, suggesting a bright future for the field.

Sonocatalytic removal of tetracycline in the presence of S-scheme Cu2O/BiFeO3 heterojunction: Operating parameters, mechanisms, degradation pathways and toxicological evaluation

Xin Wang,Xue-Song He,Chun-Yu Li,Shi-Lin Liu,Wen Lu,Zheng Xiang,Yang Wang

The development of efficient sonocatalysts is of great significance to the treatment of antibiotic wastewater. Herein, an S-scheme sonocatalyst Cu 2 O/BiFeO 3 has been fabricated using a simple synthesis method, in which Cu 2 O nanoparticles grow on the surface of BiFeO 3 . Tetracycline (TET) was selected as a representative pharmaceutical model to systematically evaluate the sonocatalytic performance of the Cu 2 O/BiFeO 3 . The experimental results showed that optimized Cu 2 O/BiFeO 3 (CBF-3) has superior sonocatalytic performance to TET (98.0 %, 0.02302 min −1 ), which is much higher than that of pure BiFeO 3 (54.6 %, 0.00515 min −1 ). Combined with the experimental result and characterization analysis, the sonodegradation mechanism was discussed. The improved sonocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism between Cu 2 O and BiFeO 3 , which can simultaneously inhibit sonoelectron-hole recombination, promote carrier transfer, maintain high redox capacity, and generate more active substance. The possible intermediate products and degradation pathways of TET over CBF-3 were analyzed by ion chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Furthermore, the results of the bacterial toxicity test indicated that the toxicity of the reaction solution decreased significantly after sonodegradation. This study provides a simple way for the rational design and successful preparation of S-scheme sonocatalyst with promising applications in the remediation of the water environment.

Significant boosting effect of single atom Pt towards the ultrasonic generation of H2O2: A two-way catalytic mechanism

Wen Yan,Jingxiang Sun,Tao Hu,Shuanghong Tian,Jinxi Feng,Ya Xiong

Single atom Pt was anchored on the surface of SiO 2 (Pt 1 /SiO 2 ) with the assistance of ionic liquid. It was found that Pt 1 (0.1 %)/SiO 2 could catalyze to sonically generate 3027.1 µmol L −1 h −1 H 2 O 2 , being 25.2 folds and 11.6 folds of those from pure ultrasound and sonocatalytic processes of Pt n (0.1 %)/SiO 2 , respectively. It was also the maximum concentration of H 2 O 2 generated by sonocatalysis so far. The significant boosting effect of Pt 1 was attributed to the synergetic role of its two-way catalytic processes proved by isotope labeling and DFT calculation. Firstly, Pt 1 catalyzed the sono-splitting of H 2 O to generate •OH as the precursor of H 2 O 2 formation by increasing the adsorption energy of H 2 O; Secondly, it catalyzed the combination of O 2 and •H to selectively generate •OOH as another precursor of H 2 O 2 by one end-on type adsorption of O 2 on Pt 1 . These findings provided a new way to enhance the ultrasonic generation of H 2 O 2 .

BiOBr/MgFe2O4 composite as a novel catalyst for the sonocatalytic removal of tetracycline in aqueous environment

Ling-Ling He,Jing-Yi Bai,Xiao-Yan Li,Shuang Qi,Song Li,Xin Wang

A series of BiOBr/MgFe 2 O 4 composites were synthesized and characterized. Tetracycline (TET) was used as a model antibiotic to verify the sonocatalytic activities of these BiOBr/MgFe 2 O 4 composites. When the mass ratio of BiOBr to MgFe 2 O 4 in the BiOBr/MgFe 2 O 4 composites was 20%, the BiOBr/MgFe 2 O 4 composite (BM-20) showed the best catalytic performance to the sonocatalytic removal of TET. Under the optimum conditions, such as the addition of catalyst 2.0 g/L, pH 7 and ultrasonic power 500 W, the initial concentration of TET 10 mg/L, the sonocatalytic removal rate of TET reached 91.10±2.36% in 30 min using BM-20 as a sonocatalyst, which was significantly better than that of MgFe 2 O 4 (52.3±2.23%). The generated hydroxyl free radicals (•OH), holes ( h + ) and superoxide anion radical (•O 2 − ) played major roles in the sonocatalytic removal process. The improved sonocatalytic performance of BM-20 was due to the S-scheme heterojunction formed between BiOBr and MgFe 2 O 4 , which could separate electron-hole ( e − -h + ) pairs effectively. Besides, BM-20 had great stability and reusability. To conclude, the fabrication of heterojunction was an effective method to improve the sonocatalytic performance of catalyst. The BiOBr/MgFe 2 O 4 composites could be satisfactory utilized as a catalyst in the sonocatalytic elimination of organic contaminant.

A novel ZnWO4/MgWO4 n-n heterojunction with enhanced sonocatalytic performance for the removal of methylene blue: Characterizations and sonocatalytic mechanism

Ling-Ling He,Xiao-Yan Li,Jing-Yi Bai,Song Li,Shuang Qi,Xin Wang,Yu Li

A novel ZnWO 4 /MgWO 4 n-n heterojunction (0.9% ZnWO 4 /MgWO 4 ) was fabricated successfully and characterized by different techniques. The methylene blue (MB) was removed to confirm the sonocatalytic activity by the 0.9% ZnWO 4 /MgWO 4 composite. The sonocatalytic removal ratio of MB using MgWO 4 was 40.04±4.34(%). It was significantly increased to 93.82±3.44(%) in the presence of 0.9% ZnWO 4 /MgWO 4 composite. The significantly improved sonocatalytic performance was due to the form of n-n heterojunction, which could hinder the recombination of electron and hole ( e − - h + ) pairs effectively. The mechanism showed that hydroxyl radical (•OH) and h + had important roles for the elimination of MB. Moreover, the 0.9% ZnWO 4 /MgWO 4 composite had remarkable stability during the process of MB removal under the ultrasonic irradiation. The results suggested that the fabrication of heterojunction is a valid method to promote the sonocatalytic performance of catalyst. The results of this paper would provide valuable references for the development of new sonocatalysts used in environmental remediation.

Removal of tetracycline hydrochloride by Z-scheme heterojunction sono-catalyst acting on ultrasound/H2O2 system

Nannan Geng,Wei Chen,Hang Xu,Mingmei Ding,Zongli Xie,Anqi Wang

Because of the unique advantages, ultrasound (US) has become a popular technology for water organic treatment. In order to compensate for the disadvantages of expensive equipment and large energy input caused by US, researchers combine US with iron-based sono-catalyst to realize the rapid and efficient degradation of pollutants. Aiming at the ultrasonic hot spot and sonoluminescence effect, in this work, Z-type heterojunction sono-catalyst Fe II -MIL-88B/GO/P25 (Fe II -MGP) was synthesized for TC-HCl removal. The physicochemical properties of the material were characterized by SEM, XRD , XPS and BET. The addition of GO contributed to the formation of the Z-Scheme heterojunction. At the optimal reaction conditions determined by influential factor experiments (ultrasonic power of 100 W, sono-catalyst dose of 0.3 g/L, H 2 O 2 dose of 20 mM and pH 5), in only 7 min, 83.3 % of TC-HCl was removed, and the TOC degradation efficiency reached 52.2 %. The contrast experiment demonstrated that the US/Fe II -MGP/H 2 O 2 system had the best pollutant removal performance. After three repeated experiments, the removal efficiency decreased by only 6 %. ∙OH was identified as the major radical from the quenching experiments and technical EPR. UV–vis and Mott-Schottky measurements suggested that the possible carrier transfer paths followed the Z-Scheme heterojunction model.

In-situ anion-exchange construction of Z-scheme Ag3PO4/AgI, derived AgCl/Ag3PO4/AgI and Ag2CO3/Ag3PO4/AgI composites with multiple redox energy bands and charge transfer pathways for efficient absorption and sonocatalytic properties

Xiaoyu Xu,Rui Wang,Jun Wang,Zhao Liu,Tingzhi Liu

Z-scheme Ag 3 PO 4 /AgI composites were synthesized by facile in-situ anion-exchange method at room temperature (RT). All the catalysts have excellent affinity to dyes and adsorb larger than 70 % of Methyl blue. The fastest adsorption equilibrium of Ag 3 PO 4 ( q e : 25.9278 mg/g) with low specific surface area (SSA: 4.6624 m 2 /g) can be rapidly attained for 6 min. The best color removal efficiency (RE) for Methyl blue over all the composites can rapidly increase to 100 % within 45 min. Meanwhile, the highest RE for RhB over S3 is 98.9 % for 60 min, and corresponding rate constant ( k ) is 0.07018 min −1 . After adding NaCl or Na 2 CO 3 into sonocatalysis, because of the formation of novel ternary AgCl/Ag 3 PO 4 /AgI and Ag 2 CO 3 /Ag 3 PO 4 /AgI during sonocatalytic process, the best REs for RhB over S3 composite increase from 89.8 % (no scavenger) to 98.2 % (1.2 mM NaCl), or to 97.6 % (1.8 mM Na 2 CO 3 ) for 30 min, respectively, and the REs for Methyl blue over S3 are about 100 % for 10 min. From single Ag 3 PO 4 to binary Ag 3 PO 4 /AgI, and to ternary Ag 2 CO 3 /Ag 3 PO 4 /AgI or AgCl/Ag 3 PO 4 /AgI, REs are significantly enhanced. New redox energy bands and charge transfer channels lead to efficiently spatial charge separation and further activation of hole ( h + ), superoxide anions (·O 2 − ), hydroxyl radicals (·OH). Additionally, the relation among oxygen vacancies (O v ), Zeta potential and RE was discussed in detail. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to make clear charge transfer and sonocatalytic mechanism. The evaluation of used samples, adsorption kinetics and modes, diverse degradation pathways and sonocatalytic mechanisms were also discussed in detail. The work provides a novel in-situ strategy for real-time control of catalytic performance by rapidly forming new phase during catalysis at RT. Furthermore, the strategy obviously facilitates real-time development of rare more than ternary composites for enhanced catalytic performance.

Design and performance of a novel direct Z-scheme NiGa2O4/CeO2 nanocomposite with enhanced sonocatalytic activity

Guowei Wang,Xue Ma,Jue Liu,Lifan Qin,Bing Li,Yuanan Hu,Hefa Cheng

A novel direct Z-scheme NiGa 2 O 4 /CeO 2 nanocomposite was designed and prepared via simple sol-hydrothermal and calcination methods, and its sonocatalytic activity was tested by studying the degradation of a model antimicrobial agent, malachite green (MG), under ultrasonic irradiation. Near complete (96.2%) degradation of MG (at 10 mg/L) could be achieved by the NiGa 2 O 4 /CeO 2 nanocomposite (at 1.0 g/L) after ultrasonic irradiation (40 kHz, 300 W) for 60 min at 25 °C. Under the same conditions, only 51.2 and 72.0% of the MG degraded in the presence of NiGa 2 O 4 and CeO 2 (at 1.0 g/L), respectively. These results demonstrate that the direct Z-scheme NiGa 2 O 4 /CeO 2 nanocomposite has excellent sonocatalytic activity, which is attributed to the matching band-gaps between NiGa 2 O 4 and CeO 2 . The sonocatalytic activity of NiGa 2 O 4 /CeO 2 nanocomposite decreased by 17% after four cycles of reuse, which is indicative of relatively good reusability. Scavenging experiments revealed that sonocatalytic degradation of MG results from the combined action of hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and holes (h + ), with the latter having a greater contribution. The pathways and mechanism of MG degradation were proposed based on the degradation intermediates detected. The results demonstrate that the prepared direct Z-scheme NiGa 2 O 4 /CeO 2 nanocomposite worked as designed and exhibited high and stable sonocatalytic activity during MG degradation, and could thus serve as a promising candidate in sonocatalytic treatment of other organic pollutants in wastewaters. The findings also provide new insights on the mechanism of sonocatalytic degradation and the design of efficient Z-scheme sonocatalysts.
