Temperature Effect on the Dust Filtration Performance of SiC Ceramic Membranes

Jinxin Gan,Lekai Zhao,Jiesong Tan,Yiqing Zeng,Jiangxiao Qiao,Jiahao Chen,Zhaoxiang Zhong,Weihong Xing

High-temperature filtration is an energy-saving and efficient technology for treating high-temperature dusty exhaust, while most of the current studies focus on the design and preparation of high-temperature filtration materials and their application in room-temperature filtration. In this work, SiC ceramic membranes were prepared as typical high-temperature filtration materials to systematically investigate the high-temperature filtration process at 25–400 °C. The experimental results show that the filtration temperature has a significant effect on both initial filtration and cake filtration processes. The increase of temperature results in an increase of gas viscosity, which contributes to the increase of the initial filtration pressure drop (ΔP0). Meanwhile, temperature can affect the forces on dust in the pore of the SiC membrane, and a higher temperature leads to the easy penetration of dust (especially for the ultrafine particles) through the membrane layer into the support body layer at the initial filtration process. Moreover, the higher temperature can reduce the porosity of the dust cake, leading to an increase in the cake pressure drop (ΔPc). All above results were further proved during the experiments on studying the effect of the filtration velocity, dust concentration, and regeneration on the filtration performance of SiC membranes at 25 and 300 °C. Through this work, we expect to shed some light on the design and preparation of high-temperature filtration materials and on the understanding of the high-temperature filtration process.

A novel preparation of anti-layered poly(vinylalcohol)–polyacrylonitrile (PVA/PAN) membrane for air filtration by electrospinning

Zhiqiang Cheng,Yingying Zhang,Zhaolian Han,Liying Cui,Lijuan Kang,Fanli Zhang

A novel 3D filtration medium for airborne particles was prepared using an electrospinning technique, wherein PVA and PAN were used as a reinforcing agent and a bulk material for the filtration membrane, respectively. In order to improve the filtration efficiency and mechanical property of the membrane, the membrane was modified by a certain concentration mixture of GA, acetone and acetic acid, which could reduce the number of hydroxyl groups, promote its stability and increase the compactness via a bond between fibers. Simultaneously, the mechanical property of the membrane was measured by a tensile tester, and the results demonstrated that the maximum strain and toughness reached 144.58% and 5.33 J g−1, respectively. After that, the membrane was used as an air purification material for testing air particles content and the particles intercept principle has been discussed. The filtration performance of the membrane demonstrated that the membrane possessed excellent removing efficiency for air suspension with lower pressure drop compared with commercial masks under the same testing conditions. The filtration efficiency for the particles, sized 0.3 to 7 μm, was found to be approximately 99%. Furthermore, we also developed an effective avenue to fabricate a filtration medium based on the a steel wire for applications in ultra condition.

Oil-mists coalescence performance of fibrous filters with superoleophilic and superoleophobic surface

Chengwei Xu,Yan Yu,Xiaodong Si

The surface wettability of fibers in coalescing filter has a critical effect on filter’s performance. In this study, we employed common glass fiber filters as model and prepared superoleophilic and superoleophobic surface filters via a facile dip-coating method. The superoleophilic treatment shows a considerable reduction in pressure drop. The wet pressure drop at saturation decrease from 12.91 kPa to 8.56 kPa after superoleophilic coating. The filtration efficiency of fine particles (<100 nm) increase owing to coating treatment. The combinations of superoleophilic and superoleophobic filter and drainage strategy were also evaluated. The results show that the combination has no advantage due to emergency turn of wettability. The drainage layer with appropriate rank could enhance the drainage rate at unsaturation stage. However, the drainage strategy is never a good idea to improving coalescence performance because it brings the extra pressure drop.

Substantial Improvement of Oil Aerosol Filtration Performance Using In-Plane Asymmetric Wettability

Xin Wei,Yufeng Liu,Hua Zhou,Feng Chen,Hongxia Wang,Zhongli Ji,George G. Chase,Tong Lin

Oil aerosol usually causes air pollution, health issues, and corrosion to equipment. The removal of aerosol oil particles from the air is a crucial process in industrial production and daily life. Although fibrous filters have been a widely used material for the separation of oil aerosol from the air, it is still a challenge to separate submicrometer aerosol oil particles with both high filtration efficiency and low resistance. Herein, we report a novel approach to markedly reduce the pressure drop of a fibrous filter and simultaneously increase its aerosol filtration efficiency, only by surface treatment to make the filter have in-plane alternating superoleophilic and superoleophobic patterns. We used a spraying method to prepare superoleophobic and superoleophilic patterns on the filter. The best filtration results were achieved when two layers of the patterned filters that have superoleophobic and superoleophilic strips (both width, 5 mm) were stacked in a way that the opposite wetting surfaces contacted each other between the layers. The filter showed a much-reduced filtration resistance and the pressure drop (4.16 kPa) at the pseudo-steady state being at least 45% lower when compared to the two-layer controls with a homogeneous surface wettability (i.e., untreated surface, superoleophobicity, and superoleophilicity). It also showed higher filtration efficiency (98.37% for small oil mists and 99.99% for large oil mists) and over two times higher quality factor (0.99 kPa–1 for small oil mists and 2.27 kPa–1 for large oil mists). The asymmetric wettability leads to the formation of unobstructed channels for the air stream to penetrate through the filter matrix, leading to a low resistance with improved oil capture efficiency. The pattern strip width showed an effect on filtration performance. This unexpected finding may provide a novel approach to designing high-performance, low energy consumption, and long-life coalescence filters.

Experimental investigation of interpersonal particle transport in an aircraft cabin mockup with nanofiber air filters

Haiqiang Zhang,Yue Pan,Chengzhong Deng,Zhuolun Niu,Ruoyu You,Chun Chen

Improving aircraft environmental control systems could reduce the risk of airborne infectious disease transmission in aircraft cabins. The high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters used in the existing systems exhibit high pressure drop, which results in high consumption of energy and fuel. Nanofiber air filters fabricated by electrospinning can reduce pressure drop, but their performance in aircraft cabins is unknown. Therefore, this study experimentally investigated the interpersonal particle transport in an aircraft cabin mockup with nanofiber air filters. First, a full-scale, fully occupied, 7-row, single-aisle aircraft cabin mockup was constructed. Nanofiber filtration units were fabricated using the electrospinning technique. Under the well-sealed laboratory testing conditions, both the small-scale nanofiber and HEPA filter media exhibited a particle removal efficiency of around 99 %. The performance of nanofiber and HEPA filtration units installed in the environmental control system of the mockup was then measured. Finally, the interpersonal particle transport in the cabin was measured. The results show that the particle removal efficiency of the nanofiber filtration units installed in the environmental control system ranged from 64 to 72 % when the particle size was 0.3–0.4 μm, which primarily reflected the large air leakages associated with the filter installation. At the filter media level, the pressure drop across the nanofiber units in the mockup was 61–67 % lower than that across the HEPA units under the same airflow rate, which however may not necessarily translate into lower pressure drop for actual filters in aircraft due to the potentially different design in terms of media face area. The average normalized particle concentration in the breathing zones of fellow passengers in the cabin mockup with the nanofiber filtration units was by 0.23, 0.29, and 0.32, respectively, when the index passenger was seated at the window, middle, and aisle.

Electrospun fine-diameter polyimide nanofiber membranes via metal wire-based needle-free technique for high-efficiency PM0.3 filtration at high-temperature

Chen Yang,Dong Xie,Suzhe Li,Luyuan Song,Zixuan Yuan

Polyimide (PI) nanofiber materials have garnered attention in the field of high-temperature filtration due to their exceptional thermal stability. Enhancing their filtration efficiency for fine particulate matter (PM2.5–0.3) and exploring their performance limits under high-temperature conditions are crucial for high-temperature filtration applications. In this study, a metal wire-based needle-free electrospinning technique was employed to electrospin polyimide (PI) material, successfully fabricating nanofiber membranes with an average fiber diameter of 122 nm within just 10 min at an elevated electrospinning voltage of 80 kV (electric field:333.33 kV/m). The Fine-diameter PI nanofiber membrane achieved a filtration efficiency of 99.99 % for PM0.3 and operated at a low resistance of 189.18 Pa. After continuous treatment at a high temperature of 390 °C for one hour, the Fine-diameter PI nanofiber membrane still maintained a filtration efficiency of 99.96 % for PM0.3 and was capable of completely filtering PM2.5. This demonstrates the excellent stability and reliability of the Fine-diameter PI nanofiber membrane under extreme temperature conditions. Additionally, the membrane exhibited outstanding hydrophobic properties, with a static contact angle of 130 ± 3°, aiding in maintaining its filtration performance in humid environments. The Fine-diameter PI nanofiber membrane developed in this study offers a novel fabrication strategy for PM filtration in high-temperature environments and provides new insights into its limit performance.

Hybrid Nanofibrous Membrane with Durable Electret for Anti-Wetting Air Filtration

Ming Yang,Ni Yao,Roman A. Surmenev,Xinxin Zhang,Jianyong Yu,Shichao Zhang,Bin Ding

Electrospun fibrous materials with fine fibers and small pores are fundamental for particulate matter (PM) filtration, addressing its harmful environmental and health impacts. However, the existing electrospun fibers are still limited to their sub-micron diameters and unstable surface electrostatic effect, leading to deteriorated filtration performance after prolonged storage or wetting. Herein, the study creates nanofibrous membranes with long-time stable electrostatics by electret-enhanced electrospinning. The phase separation and polarization of the charged jet are manipulated to achieve rapid stretch and strong electret. The obtained membrane exhibits nanosized structures with fiber diameters of ≈220 nm, pore size <1 µm, as well as robust surface potential of 0.4 kV. By virtue of the synergistic effects of sieving and adsorption, the nanofibrous membrane showed a remarkable PM 0.3 filtration efficiency of 96.6% and pressure drop of 140 Pa, even reaching the N90 standard after five wetting cycles. The design of such durable membranes will offer a new sight in the functional filtration materials.

High-performance filters from biomimetic wet-adhesive nanoarchitectured networks

Hui Liu,Shichao Zhang,Lifang Liu,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Two-dimensional (2D) networks assembled by nanoscale fibers are attractive for the design of equipment for personal and environmental protection, but are limited by insufficient structural and performance control. We report a facile route, based on blend electrospinning/netting technology, for the preparation of a hybrid biologically inspired nanofiber network (nanofiber-net) filter with nanoscale fiber diameters (∼27 nm), a 2D stable spider-web-like structure, and mussel-mimetic wet-adhesive surfaces. Manipulating the formation and phase separation of the charged droplets ejected from a Taylor cone by controlling the mussel-mimetic adhesive molecules, enabled the generation of biomimetic nanofiber-nets on a large scale. The resulting filters show the remarkable nanostructural properties of small pore size (∼0.28 μm), high specific area, enhanced surface adhesion and wettability, high-performance applications in air filtration (>99.99% PM0.3 efficiency under >90% humidity, ∼0.13% of atmosphere pressure) and water purification (>99.9% efficiency, 453 L m−2 h−1 gravity-driven flux). This work offers an innovative design of high-performance nanofiber filters for a broad range of applications.

Controllable synthesis of hierarchical porous mullite fiber network for gas filtration

Qingzhao Liu,Tao Xue,Lina Yang,Xiaoxia Hu,Haiyan Du

The hierarchical network was prepared by firing the mixture of mullite fiber and a kind of active powder which was made up of alumina gel, silica gel and AlF 3 powder. During which, the smooth surface of mullite fiber was coated with the secondary structure which was controllable by adjusting the firing temperature or by changing the mass ratio of active powder/mullite fiber. The secondary structure created new pore size distribution for the network. Some new pores with diameters of about 1   μm were found in the modified network, while the network constructed by the smooth mullite fiber only had pores with diameters of about 50   μm. Because of the introduction of the secondary structure, the particle filtration efficiency of the network substantially increased. The filtration efficiency for the 0.5   μm particles increased from 12.9% to 94.2%. The filtration efficiency for the 0.3   μm particles also increased from 0.6% to 56.6%.

Fabrication and characterization of mullite fiber-based porous ceramics with mixed fiber lengths for high-temperature gas filtration

Dazhi Zheng,Ruijian Zhu,Yuwen Hu,Shiou Liang,Huiying Sun,Zengmei Wang

The emissions and particulate pollutants (PM) from industrialization and other human activities have become a significant threat to human health. Researchers have experimented with various fiber-bonded filters, but there are still relatively few products with good high-temperature resistance. In this paper, a fiber-bonded porous ceramic with high porosity was prepared by vacuum filtration combined with freeze-drying using two homemade mullite fibers with different length-to-diameter ratios as raw materials and mullite sol as binder. When the content of fine fibers is 40 %, the product has a better overall performance, its density is 0.63g/cm 3 , porosity is 74 %, strength is 0.77 MPa, thermal conductivity is 0.153 W m −1  K −1 . When the airflow rate of 2 L/min, the pressure drop is 80 Pa, the filtration efficiency of about 99 %, the QF is 0.08 pa −1 , The mullite fiber-bonded porous ceramics prepared through a simple process exhibit excellent filtration performance, offering a wide range of potential applications.

Air filters fabricated by fibrillated lyocell fibres and polyethylene terephthalate fibres with implantation of cellulose nanofibrils for high-efficiency particulate matter removal

Zhang Jiawei,Wang Xiaojun,Huang Huicheng,Zhang Bin,Zhou Hao,Xin Yujun,Han Guangting,Zhang Yuanming

Air pollution has become a serious threat to human health; hence, it is highly desirable to develop high-efficiency air filters. In this paper, porous cellulose nanofibril (CNF)-implanted air filters with hierarchical structures consisting of LC/PET/CNF composites were prepared using pressurized filtration. The frame of the composite was made of fibrillated lyocell fibres (LC), while polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibres acted as spacers between the fibrillated LC fibres. CNFs serving as functional fillers were implanted in the LC/PET composite to decrease pressure drop. The results showed that the overall filtration efficiency of the LC/PET composite (50%:50%) with a basis weight of 30 g/m 2 for particulate matter (PM) was only 52.69%, while the pressure drop was 56.50 Pa. However, after implantation of CNFs in the LC/PET composite with a weight concentration of only 0.5 g/m 2 , the overall filtration efficiency significantly improved to 98.22% with an acceptable pressure drop of 145.50 Pa (P 50 W 30 t 3 N 0.5 ). The study provides a new way to achieve high-efficiency fabrication of air filters with high performance for PM removal. Graphical abstract

Dual-bionic, fluffy, and flame resistant polyamide-imide ultrafine fibers for high-temperature air filtration

Yuezhen Hua,Yuyao Li,Zekai Ji,Wang Cui,Zheng Wu,Jie Fan,Yong Liu

Particulate matter (PM) pollution has been acknowledged as a serious health hazard globally, calling for thermo-stable air filtration materials to remove particles from high-temperature emission sources. However, the commercial filter media suffer from large fiber diameter and compact assembling architecture, resulting in the difficulty in achieving a balance between filtration efficiency and pressure drop. Herein, a dual-bionic strategy is proposed to prepare high-performance polyamide-imide (PAI) fibrous assemblies for the application in high-temperature air filtration. Inspired by the fact that Masson Pine shows attractive capability of particle retention, PAI fibers with biomimetic groove structure are constructed via asynchronous phase separation principle, meanwhile showing fluffy assembling architecture via humidity-induced electrospinning technology. Furthermore, the stiff cellulose networks within loofah sponges, which contributes to robust mechanical property, inspired us to construct semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) structure within PAI fibers. Benefitting from the hierarchical structure and intrinsic flame resistant property, the resulting PAI ultrafine fibers present distinct characteristics of high specific surface area (25.97 m 2 /g) and high porosity (90.44 %), contributing to a high PM 2.5 filtration efficiency (98 % at severe pollution), a low pressure drop (only 46.35 Pa), and satisfying long serving time at 220℃. The successful fabrication of PAI filter media brings new insights for designing next-generation thermo-stable air filters.
