Synthesis of Au doped Ag nanoclusters and the doping effect of Au atoms on their physical and optical properties

Syed Adil Shah,Kuo-Juei Hu,Muhammad Naveed,Syed Niaz Ali Shah,Shengyong Hu,Siqi Lu,Fengqi Song

Bimetallic noble metal nanoclusters (NCs) are an emerging topic of metal clusters due to their distinguishing characteristics compared to monometallic clusters. Doping of different noble atoms in other clusters is an effective strategy for tailoring their functionalities for specific applications and synergistic effects. Obtaining single-heteroatom doping is desirable but still very challenging to date. Herein, 2,4-dimethylbenzenthiol (2,4-DMBT) protected Ag/Au alloy NCs (ca. 2-3 nm) were synthesized via a wet chemical one-pot process. The effect of the number of Au atoms in Ag NCs on their optical properties and bandgap was investigated. We found that the change of the absorption peak positions of the Ag NCs was influenced by the presence of Au atoms. Besides, we found that the HOMO-LUMO peak has appeared without a significant change in cluster size during synthesis. Ag/Au alloy NCs are characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron transmission microscopy (STEM).

A strategy of synergistic optimization: gold and lithium co-doped vanadium oxide as a hole-injection layer for high-performance OLEDs

Han Zhang,Wenqing Zhu,Lu Huang,Chen Yi,Ruilin Chen,Yipeng Chen,Jun Li

The hole-injection layer (HIL) plays a critical role in the efficiency and stability of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, inorganic HIL materials, such as transition metal oxides (TMOs), usually suffer the problems of low conductivity and mismatched work function at ITO/hole-transport layer (HTL) interfaces, which limits the hole-injection in OLEDs. In this paper, a gold (Au) and lithium (Li) co-doping strategy has been employed to fabricate a vanadium oxide (VOx) HIL through solution processing at low temperature for improving device performance. Compared to non-doped VOx and Au-doped VOx films, co-doping with an optimal molar ratio of Au and Li endows the VOx films with both higher electrical conductivity and proper work function matching with the ITO anode and HTL, which leads to efficient hole-injection and improved carrier balance in the device with the Au and Li co-doped VOx (Au,Li:VOx) HIL. As a result, the device with the Au,Li:VOx HIL shows a peak power efficiency of 50.2 lm W−1 and a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 19.9%, which are superior to those of the counterpart with the VOx HIL (34.4 lm W−1 and 18.1%). Meanwhile, the device shows distinguished stability. This work indicates that Au and Li co-doping is an effective method to obtain an efficient VOx HIL with excellent hole-injection ability, which provides a promising avenue to enhance OLED performance.

Synergistic Au passivation and prolonged aging optimization enhance the long-term catalytic stability of porous YSZ/Pt electrodes

Xiaoqing Jiang,Jie Zou,Yongjian Ni,Yuheng Wang,Xianwei Qian,Xuebin Li,Shihao Wei,Yuanjie Su,Guangzhong Xie,Mingjun Zhou,Jiawen Jian

The catalytic activity of an oxygen-pumping electrode is very important to the performance of amperometric NO x (NO and NO 2 ) sensors. To enhance the stability of electrochemical NO x sensors based on Pt electrodes, we fabricated sensitive electrodes of Pt-based materials doped with small and different Au contents on 8% mol Y 2 O 3 -stabilized ZrO 2 (8YSZ) solid electrolyte substrates by screen printing and high-temperature co-firing. The effects of Au on the porous Pt electrode’s catalytic activity and long-term stability were investigated, and the results are as follows. First, the catalytic capacity of the Pt–Au alloy electrode decreases with increasing Au content due to the inhibition of the oxygen adsorption on Au, which decreases the amount of oxygen participating in the reaction at triple-phase boundaries (TPBs). Second, the catalytic ability of the alloy electrode decreases exponentially with aging time due to the reduction in the length of TPBs caused by the significant reduction in the number of holes in the electrode, and the oxidation of Pt. In addition, the conductivity decay rate of the electrode decreases with increasing Au doping. This indicates that Pt-based electrodes doped with varying Au contents, long-term, and high-temperature aging have notably regular effects on the catalytic activity of oxygen-pumping electrodes, for which we have developed a model of Au passivation and the synergistic effect of aging time on the activity of Pt-based oxygen-pumping electrodes.

Au Doping PtNi Nanodendrites for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Shan Wang,Lifeng Ma,Dan Song,Shengchun Yang

To boost the electrocatalytic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) of Platinum (Pt), making binary PtM (M = transition metals, for example, Fe, Cu, and Ni) with specific morphology is known as a promising method. Although great progress has been made in the synthesis of shaped PtM catalysts toward MOR, enhancing the catalytic performance of the PtM to enable it to be commercialized is still a hotspot. In this work, the Au-doped PtNi dendritic nanoparticles (Au-PtNi DNPs) were obtained by doping a small amount of gold (Au) into initially prepared PtNi DNPs, greatly improving their MOR catalytic activity and durability. The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping (EDXS) indicates that the surface of DNPs is mainly composed of Au dopant and PtNi, while the core is mainly Pt, indicating the formation of Au-doped PtNi/Pt core-shell-like DNP structures. The electrocatalytic performance of the prepared Au-PtNi DNPs with different compositions for the MOR was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and CO-stripping tests. The experimental findings indicate that the Au-PtNi DNPs showed better MOR performance in comparison with PtNi DNPs and commercial Pt catalysts. Among all the catalysts, 6% Au-PtNi DNPs showed 4.3 times improved mass catalytic activity for the MOR in comparison with commercial Pt catalysts. In addition, all the prepared Au-PtNi DNPs display a remarkable CO tolerance compared to that of PtNi DNPs and commercial Pt catalysts. The dendritic structure of Au-PtNi DNPs can effectively enhance catalytic performance, combined with the electronic effect of Au, Pt, and Ni.Keywords:Au dopant;nanodendrite;AuPtNi shell;methanol oxidation reaction

Gold-Doped Cobalt–Nickel Sulfide Nanosheets for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Tingwei Liu,Congcong Xu,Yang Guo,Pei-Zhou Li,Shiling Yuan,Meng Lin

The electrolytic water of oxygen evolution reaction is a four-electron transport process, which results in a slow kinetic process coupled with a high oxygen evolution reaction application potential; therefore, the catalysts have become an urgent bottleneck in the research of hydrolysis reactions. Research on the oxygen evolution reaction is booming with various materials such as noble metals and transition metals. Because of their intrinsically excellent charge transport properties and cost-effective features, transition metal sulfides have attracted much investigation. Herein, we combined the synergistic catalysis of transition metals with the modification of trace noble metal atoms to design and synthesize gold-doped cobalt–nickel sulfide nanosheets (Au-CoNiSx NSs) for oxygen evolution reaction. The cobalt–nickel ratio of electrodeposition and the doping of Au on the millimolar scale were studied. The doping of Au atoms promoted the deposition of sulfur elements and led to the formation of more compact nanostructures, thereby improving the OER performance. The optimal electrochemical performance was obtained with Co/Ni = 3:1 and Au addition of 0.5 mmol/L, with an overpotential of 305.9 mV (vs RHE) at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 and a Tafel slope of 60.98 mV/dec. In the chronopotentiometry measurement, there was no significant difference in electrochemical performance within 12 h, indicating that the nanomaterial has good catalytic stability.

Gold-Doping of Double-Crown Pd Nanoclusters

Jishi Chen,Liren Liu,Xu Liu,Lingwen Liao,Shengli Zhuang,Shiming Zhou,Jinlong Yang,Zhikun Wu

Graphical Double-crown Pd 4 (PET) 8 and Pd 5 (PET) 10 were successfully doped with gold through two Au atoms replacing one Pd atom with the other double-crown structure essentially unchanged. Au 4 Pd 2 (PET) 8 is the smallest chiral bimetal nanoclusters so far and it bears chirality originating from not only the helixed Au 4 Pd 2 S 8 framework but also unanimous R or S configuration of sulfur atoms in the enantiomer. Double-crown Ni, Pd, or Pt nanoclusters have attracted extensive interests due to their aesthetic structure and intriguing properties. However, their doping by other metals remains unknown until now. Herein, Pd 4 (PET) 8 and Pd 5 (PET) 10 (PET: SCH 2 CH 2 Ph) were successfully doped with gold and the doped nanoclusters were characterized by using multiple techniques such as mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. It is revealed that in the doping not one but two gold atoms replace one Pd with the other double-crown structure essentially unchanged, and the gold-doping results in the blue-shift of the maximum visible absorption, the increase of optical energy gap and the reduction of anti-aromaticity of monometal Pd nanoclusters. Importantly, it is found that Au 4 Pd 2 (PET) 8 nanocluster bears chirality originating from not only the helixed Au 4 Pd 2 S 8 framework, but also unanimous R or S configuration of sulfur atoms in the enantiomer. For the latter chirality origin, it was not previously reported or proposed. Au 4 Pd 2 (PET) 8 reported here also represents the smallest chiral bimetal nanocluster so far to the best of our knowledge. This work advances one step toward both the tailoring of group 10 metal nanoclusters by doping and the understanding of chirality origin for metal nanoclusters.

EFFECT OF LATTICE MISMATCH ON THE MICROSTRUCTURE AND ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF LaNiO3 CONDUCTIVE FILMS

M. W. ZHU,B. D. YOU,D. C. SHI,T. N. LU,J. N. WANG,N. JIA,C. Z. LIU

In this work, we prepared LaNiO 3 (LNO) and Au-LaNiO 3 (Au-LNO) films using sol–gel multilayer coating method. The effects of lattice mismatch on the microstructure and electrical properties of the films were investigated by choosing different single-crystal substrate. XRD, SEM, and AFM results showed the high quality of LNO and Au-LNO films, indicating the successful epitaxial growth of the films on the single-crystal substrates. The room temperature resistivity of LNO films increased with the increase of lattice mismatch while different tendency was observed in Au-LNO films, suggesting that different mechanisms prevailed in the LNO and Au-LNO films. Both the transport behavior and the residual resistivity ratio were checked to explore the relationship between the lattice mismatch and the electrical properties of the films. Strain and defect concentration were proposed as the predominating factors for the changes in the resistivity of LNO and Au-LNO films under the influence of lattice mismatch.

Gold-Incorporated Cobalt Phosphide Nanoparticles on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Xiaoyan Wang,Yang Fei,Wei Li,Lingya Yi,Bomin Feng,Yixiang Pan,Weihua Hu,Chang Ming Li

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) demonstrate great potential for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysis, but their activities need further improvement. Herein we report a novel Au incorporation strategy to boost the HER catalytic performance of CoP. As a proof of concept, heterostructured Au/CoP nanoparticles dispersed on nitrogen-doped carbon with unique porosity, denoted as Au/CoP@NC-3, are synthesized by thermal treatment of Au-nanoparticle-incorporated ZIF-67 precursor. It shows excellent HER activity as well as good durability in acidic and alkaline condition, respectively, greatly outperforming its Au-free analogue, namely, CoP@NC. In-depth analysis suggests that the improved HER activity of Au/CoP@NC-3 is attributed to the presence of Au nanoparticles which enlarge the electrochemical active surface areas and adjust the electronic structure of active CoP species to enhance the water adsorption and optimize H adsorption for the accelerated HER process.

Electrochemical Sensor Coating Based on Electrophoretic Deposition of Au-Doped Self-Assembled Nanoparticles

Rongli Zhang,Ye Zhu,Jing Huang,Sheng Xu,Jing Luo,Xiaoya Liu

The electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of self-assembled nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of an electrode is a new strategy for preparing sensor coating. By simply changing the deposition conditions, the electrochemical response for an analyte of deposited NPs-based coating can be controlled. This advantage can decrease the difference between different batches of sensor coating and ensure the reproducibility of each sensor. This work investigated the effects of deposition conditions (including deposition voltage, pH value of suspension, and deposition time) on the structure and the electrochemical response for l-tryptophan of sensor coating formed from Au-doped poly(sodium γ-glutamate) with pendant dopamine units nanohybrids (Au/γ-PGA–DA NBs) via the EPD method. The structure and thickness of the deposited sensor coating were measured by atomic force microscopy, which demonstrated that the structure and thickness of coating can be affected by the deposition voltage, the pH value of the suspension, and the deposition time. The responsive current for l-tryptophan of the deposited sensor coating were measured by differential pulse voltammetry, which showed that the responsive current value was affected by the structure and thickness of the deposited coating. These arguments suggested that a rich design-space for tuning the electrochemical response for analyte and a source of variability in the structure of sensor coating can be provided by the deposition conditions. When Au/γ-PGA–DA NBs were deposited on the electrode surface and formed a continuous coating with particle morphology and thinner thickness, the deposited sensor coating exhibited optimal electrochemical response for l-tryptophan.

Gold Doping of HgTe Colloidal Quantum Dots for High-Performance Infrared Photodetectors

Mengxuan Yu,Runze Huang,Xingchen Zhang,Xudong Hu,Xi Ran,Hang Xia,Mohan Yuan,Jianbing Zhang,Liang Gao,Jiang Tang,Xinzheng Lan

HgTe colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have gained significant interest due to their extremely wide spectral response and excellent solution processability, making them promising candidates for the next-generation infrared photodetectors. However, the limited availability of p -type HgTe CQDs poses a significant challenge to device construction. In this study, a room-temperature process is identified – one based on a cation exchange process – for the preparation of p -type Au-doped HgTe CQDs. The resultant Au-doped HgTe CQDs exhibit tunable p -type doping, enhanced defect passivation, and improved doping homogeneity than conventional Ag-doped HgTe CQDs. By using Au-doped HgTe CQDs as the hole transport layer, high-performance p -on- n photodiodes are demonstrated, where a record external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 58.8% at ≈1.6 µm and a specific detectivity above 10 12 Jones are successfully demonstrated. This work shows the promise of heterovalent doping in CQDs for advancing infrared optoelectronic devices and is poised to pave the way for further exploration of innovative doping strategies in nanomaterials.

Metal–Organic Framework-Derived Au-Doped In2O3 Nanotubes for Monitoring CO at the ppb Level

Fan Zhao,Lingmin Yu,Jingfeng Wang,Wei Cao,Hao Zhang,Hairong Wang,Pu-Hong Wang,Zhihong Qiao

Achieving selective detection of ppb-level CO is important for air quality testing at industrial sites to ensure personal safety. Noble metal doping enhances charge transfer, which in turn reduces the detection limit of metal oxide gas sensors. In this work, metal–organic framework-derived Au-doped In2O3 nanotubes with high electrical conductivity are synthesized by pyrolysis of the Au-doped metal–organic framework (In-MIL-68) as a template. Gas-sensing experiments reveal that the detection limit of 0.2% Au-doped In2O3 nanotubes (0.2% Au, mass fraction) is as low as 750 ppb. Meanwhile, the sensing material shows a response value of 18.2 to 50 ppm of CO at 240 °C, which is about 2.8 times higher than that of pure In2O3. Meanwhile, the response and recovery times are short (37 s/86 s). The gas-sensing mechanism of CO is uncovered by in situ DRIFTS through the reaction intermediates. In addition, first-principles calculations suggest that Au doping of In2O3 significantly enhances its adsorption energy for CO and improves the electron transfer properties. This study reveals a novel synthesis pathway for Au-doped In2O3 nanotubular structures and their potential application in low concentration CO detection.

Ultrahigh oxygen evolution reaction activity in Au doped co-based nanosheets

Chao Cai,Shaobo Han,Xiaotao Zhang,Jingxia Yu,Xia Xiang,Jack Yang,Liang Qiao,Xiaotao Zu,Yuanzheng Chen,Sean Li

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has attracted enormous interest as a key process for water electrolysis over the past years. The advance of this process relies on an effective catalyst. Herein, we employed single-atom Au doped Co-based nanosheets (NSs) to theoretically and experimentally evaluate the OER activity and also the interaction between Co and Au. We reveal that Au–Co(OH)2 NSs achieved a low overpotential of 0.26 V at 10 mA cm−2. This extraordinary phenomenon presents an overall superior performance greater than state-of-the-art Co-based catalysts in a sequence of α-Co(OH)2 < Co3O4 < CoOOH < Au–Co(OH)2. With ab initio calculations and analysis in the specific Au–Co(OH)2 configuration, we reveal that OER on highly active Au–Co(OH)2 originates from lattice oxygen, which is different from the conventional adsorbate evolution scheme. Explicitly, the configuration of Au–Co(OH)2 gives rise to oxygen non-bonding (ONB) states and oxygen holes, allowing direct O–O bond formation by a couple of oxidized oxygen with oxygen holes, offering a high OER activity. This study provides new insights for elucidating the origins of activity and synthesizing efficient OER electrocatalysts.
