Crown-Assisted CsCu2I3 Growth and Trap Passivation for Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Shuang Yang,Zhenyu Tang,Bo Qu,Lixin Xiao,Zhijian Chen

Copper (Cu)-based perovskites are promising for lead-free perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). However, it remains a significant challenge to achieve high performance devices due to the nonradiative loss caused by the disordered crystallization and lack of passivation. Crown ethers are known to form host–guest complexes by the interaction between C–O–C groups and certain cations, and 18-crown-6 (18C6) with an appropriate complementary size can interact with Cs+ and Cu+ cations. Herein, we studied the interaction between CsCu2I3 and two crowns with the same cyclic size, 18C6 and dibenzo-18-crown-6 (D18C6). Particularly, D18C6 can reduce the nonradiative recombination rate of CsCu2I3 film by passivating the defects and optimizing the film morphology effectively. The room mean square (RMS) decreased from 5.06 to 2.95 nm, and the PLQY was promoted from 4.71% to 19.9%. Besides, D18C6 can also decrease the barrier of hole injection. The PeLEDs based on D18C6-modified CsCu2I3 realized noticeable improvement with a maximum luminance and EQE of 583 cd/m2 and 0.662%, respectively.

Vacuum-Deposited Blue Inorganic Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Peipei Du,Jinghui Li,Liang Wang,Jing Liu,Shunran Li,Nian Liu,Yuxuan Li,Muyi Zhang,Liang Gao,Ying Ma,Jiang Tang

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have drawn great research attention because of their outstanding electroluminescence performance by solution processing. PeLEDs made by thermal evaporation are relatively rarely explored but are compatible to existing organic light-emitting diode industrial lines. Blue-emitting PeLEDs are all based on organic-containing perovskites, rather than more stable all-inorganic perovskites because of their poor solubility, too fast crystallization, uneven discrete films, and unattainable pure blue emission. Here, we report all-inorganic, vacuum-processed blue PeLEDs. High-throughput combinatorial approaches are employed to optimize Cs–Pb–Br–Cl composition in our dual-source co-evaporation system to achieve the balance between film photoluminescence and injection efficiency. The as-deposited perovskite films demonstrated excellent intrinsic stability against heat, UV-light, and humidity attack. A series of PeLEDs were obtained covering the standard blue spectral region with a best luminance of 121 cd/m2 and an external quantum efficiency of 0.38%. We believe that the vacuum processing strategy demonstrated here provides a very promising alternative way to produce efficient and stable all-inorganic blue-emitting PeLEDs.

Inkjet Printing Efficient Defined-Pixel Matrix Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes with a Polar Polymer Modification Layer

Junjie Wang,Danyang Li,Yu Luo,Jian Wang,Junbiao Peng

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) for full-color displays based on inkjet printing technology are increasingly attractive. For potential applications, fabricating high-quality perovskite films with defined-pixel sizes is crucially important. The key issue is how to control the contact properties between the perovskite ink and a hole transport layer (HTL). In this study, a novel strategy is proposed by using the poly[(9,9-bis(3′-((N,N-dimethyl)-N-ethylammonium)-propyl)-2,7-fluorene)- alt -2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)] dibromide (PFN-Br) polar polymer to modify the HTL surface, instead of conventional O 2 plasma method. The PFN-Br can enhance the surface energy of HTLs, including PVK, Poly-TPD, TFB, etc., and improve the wettability of perovskite inks on the HTL due to its polar quaternary ammonium groups. Besides, the PFN-Br acts as the easier nucleation to induce a tiny crystallization of perovskites. On the other hand, the diphenyl phosphate liver (DPA) is first used to mix in perovskite inks to optimize the perovskite film phase distribution and the elimination of uncoordinated Pb 2+ , resulting from interactions between PEA + and DPA, Pb 2+ and DPA, respectively. As a result, a defined-pixel matrix green quasi-2D PeLED with the peak external quantum efficiency over 10% via inkjet printing technique is achieved, which is the most efficient matrix green PeLEDs fabricated by inkjet printing technique so far.

Effect of self-assembled monolayer on stability of perovskite LEDs

Xinshun Qin,Muhammad Umair Ali,Hongbo Mo,Zhengtian Yuan,Yanling He,Alan Man Ching Ng,Aleksandra B. Djurišić

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with different self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), namely 2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (2PACz), [4-(3,6-dimethyl-9H-carbazol- 9-yl)butyl] phosphonic acid (Me-4PACz), and [2-(3,6-Dichloro-9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (Cl-2PACz), have been investigated. We find that the underlying SAM affects the perovskite morphology despite the use of poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-alt-(4,4′-(N-(4-butylphen-yl)))] (TFB) hole transport layer between the SAM and the perovskite. Despite similar device performance in terms of maximum luminance and external quantum efficiency, the devices exhibit significant differences in lifetime which correlate with perovskite thin film morphology. We show that significant roughness is detrimental to the device stability. The devices with 2PACz SAM, which exhibit the most favorable film morphology, exhibit T 50 lifetime of 1.43 h.

High-Efficiency Tandem White Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes by Using an Organic/Inorganic Intermediate Connector

Yu Yan,Qi Zhang,Zhijian Wang,Qifeng Du,Ruitao Tang,Xiaoyu Wang

The performance of monochromatic perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) has undergone rapid development in recent years, while white PeLEDs are still in their infancy. The tandem devices prepared by connecting light-emitting units of different colors with intermediate connectors comprise one of the promising approaches for realizing white light emission. The intermediate connector plays a crucial role in determining the effectiveness of the light-emitting units. In this work, all-perovskite-based white LEDs are assembled by employing sky-blue (490 nm) and red (690 nm) perovskite emitters as active layers. With mixed p-type and n-type organic charge transport materials as the intermediate connector, the highest external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the device was 1.4%, the electroluminescence (EL) peak position of the blue light part was shifted to 512 nm, and the red light part was shifted to 673 nm. In contrast, with organic and inorganic charge transport materials as the intermediate connector, the devices exhibited better charge generation/injection capabilities and a record EQE of 8.5%. The EL peak position of the device prepared from the stored film was not shifted, implying that the organic/inorganic layer effectively suppresses halide migration. Our work paves the way for highly efficient tandem white PeLEDs.Keywords:tandem;white perovskite light-emitting diodes;organic/inorganic intermediate connector

Impact of PEDOT:PSS/Ti3C2Tx composite hole transport layer on the performance of perovskite light emitting diodes

Hui Zhang,Zhenyang Wang,Zhixing Chen,Xingyue Zhang,Yuanming Zhou,Fei Mei

The two-dimensional transition metal carbide MXenes, often designated by Ti 3 C 2 T x , have garnered significant interest on account of their distinctive optoelectronic characteristics. In this paper, PEDOT:PSS/Ti 3 C 2 T x composite hole transport layer (HTLs) was prepared by adding the MXenes material Ti 3 C 2 T x into PEDOT:PSS, and quasi-two-dimensional perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) were fabricated and investigated. While the addition concentration of Ti 3 C 2 T x was 0.25 mg/mL, the optimal device shows the maximum luminance of 6250 cd/m 2 , and the current efficiency of 6.17 cd/A, which is 133 % and 112 % higher than the reference device without Ti 3 C 2 T x , respectively. It is indicated that the additive incorporation of Ti 3 C 2 T x in PEDOT:PSS can improve the efficiency of hole injection and conductivity of hole transport layer, and passivate the defects of perovskite film, thus enhancing the optoelectronic performance of PeLEDs. The findings of this study indicate that the PEDOT:PSS/Ti 3 C 2 T x composite HTLs has considerable potential for application in PeLEDs.

Multivalent-effect immobilization of reduced-dimensional perovskites for efficient and spectrally stable deep-blue light-emitting diodes

Dong Jianchao,Zhao Bin,Ji Huiyu,Zang Ziang,Kong Lingmei,Chu Chunshuang,Han Dongyuan,Wang Jie,Fu Yuhao,Zhang Zi-Hui,Yang Yingguo,Zhang Lijun,Yang Xuyong,Wang Ning

Despite substantial advances in green and red metal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs), blue PeLEDs, particularly deep-blue ones (defined as Commission International de l’Eclairage y coordinate (CIE y ) less than 0.06) that meet the latest Rec. 2020 colour gamut standard, lag dramatically behind owing to a severe phase segregation-induced electroluminescent spectral shift and low exciton utilization in broadened bandgap perovskite emitters. Here we propose a multivalent immobilization strategy to realize high-efficiency and spectrally stable deep-blue PeLEDs by introducing a polyfluorinated oxygen-containing molecule. Systematic experiments and extensive 5,000 fs ab initio molecular dynamics simulations reveal that a crucial role of the multivalent effect stemming from three kinds of interaction of hydrogen bond (F···H–N), ionic bond (F–Pb) and coordination bond (C=O:Pb) with perovskite is to synergistically stabilize the perovskite phase and enhance exciton radiative recombination. The resultant exciton concentration and exciton recombination rate of the deep-blue perovskite emitter are increased by factors of 1.66 and 1.64, respectively. In this context, our target PeLEDs demonstrate a peak external quantum efficiency of up to 15.36% at a deep-blue emission wavelength of 459 nm and a half-lifetime of 144 min at a constant current density of 0.45 mA cm − 2 . Moreover, the deep-blue PeLEDs maintain a constant spectrum peak with CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.136, 0.051) under a steady driving current for 60 min.

Multisite Active Material for High-Performance Blue Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes and Active-Matrix Displays

Yuan-Hang Wu,Yang Shen,Bing-Feng Wang,Yu-Tong Wang,Shi-Chi Feng,Yi Yu,Yu-Hang Zhang,Zhenhuang Su,Xingyu Gao,Yanqing Li,Jian-Xin Tang

Efforts to improve the performance of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have predominantly centered on two key strategies: defect passivation and phase modulation, both of which aim to mitigate nonradiative recombination. While recent advances have explored the synergistic mechanisms in multiadditive systems, the inherent multifunctionality of single-additive systems remains underexplored. Here, we investigate a biopharmaceutical agent, ambroxol hydrochloride (AMB), with multifunctional groups as a multifunctional perovskite crystallization regulator. The presence of abundant electron-rich moieties (e.g., −OH and −NH2) facilitates efficient passivation of perovskite grain boundaries via multiple coordination bonds (e.g., O:Pb and N:Pb). These functional groups also exhibit a strong propensity to form hydrogen bonds with halogen ions, thereby effectively suppressing the formation of halogen vacancies and inhibiting ion migration. Furthermore, AMB impedes the adsorption of the spacer molecule phenylethylamine (PEA) on the octahedron surface and competes with PEA for coordination sites, thereby promoting the formation of well-aligned layered phases and enhancing exciton transfer efficiency. Consequently, we obtained spectrally stable sky-blue PeLEDs with a high external quantum efficiency of 22.42%. High-quality active-matrix array displays are further demonstrated, achieving precise independent control of each pixel. These displays exhibit superior brightness and color consistency, making them highly promising for advanced optoelectronic applications.

All-Thermally Evaporated Blue Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes for Active Matrix Displays

Jiaxing Zhu,Jinghui Li,Yuanlong Huang,Nian Liu,Liang Sun,Zixi Shen,Chaoqun Yang,Fanxin Liu,Boxiang Song,Jiajun Luo,Jiang Tang

With the rapid progress of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs), the large-scale fabrication of active matrix PeLED displays (AM-PeLEDs) is gaining increasing attention. However, the integration of high-resolution PeLED arrays with thin-film transistor backplanes remains a significant challenge for conventional spin-coating techniques. Here, the demonstration of large-area, blue-emitting AM-PeLEDs are demonstrated using a vacuum deposition technique, which is regarded as the most effective route for organic light-emitting diode displays. By the introduction of an in situ passivation strategy, the defects-related nonradiative recombination is largely suppressed, which leads to an improved photoluminescence quantum yield of vapor-deposited blue-emitting perovskites. The as-prepared blue PeLEDs exhibit a peak external quantum efficiency of 2.47% with pure-blue emission at 475 nm, which represents state-of-the-art performance for vapor-deposited pure-blue PeLEDs. Benefiting from the excellent uniformity and compatibility of thermal evaporation, the 6.67-inch blue-emitting AM-PeLED display with a high resolution of 394 pixels per inch is successfully demonstrated. The demonstration of blue-emitting AM-PeLED display represents a crucial step toward full-color perovskite display technology.

High-Radiance Near-Infrared Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes with Improved Roll-Off Degradation

Maotao Yu,Yongqiang Ji,Haoming Yan,Jinhao Hu,Shunde Li,Hongyu Xu,Peng Chen,Lichen Zhao,Shuzhen Guan,Xiaoyin Bi,Xiaoyu Yang,Shuang Jia,Chang Yi,Deying Luo,Jianpu Wang,Zheng-Hong Lu,Qihuang Gong,Rui Zhu

The external quantum efficiency (EQE) of state-of-the-art near-infrared perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) is now approaching the limit set by the out-coupling efficiency. However, there is plenty of room for enhancing these devices’ radiance and the EQE roll-off. This work reports how conductive and passivating additives construct efficient high-radiance near-infrared PeLEDs with improved EQE roll-off. Specifically, the synergistic effect of 1,4-phenylenediacetic acid (PDA) and 5-aminovaleric acid (5-AVA) is used to regulate the quality of the perovskite emissive layer, thereby enhancing the roll-off threshold of injection currents (a value at which the device EQE or radiance starts degrading). According to in situ structural evolution analyses from the perovskite precursor to the perovskite crystal, the presence of PDA within the perovskite precursor solution can produce an intermediate phase with 5-AVA and formanmidinium cation, which can retard the perovskite nucleation and crystal growth, leading to improved perovskite film quality. The resulting champion PeLED delivers among the highest radiance of 505 W sr −1 m −2 and a peak EQE of 17.56%. More importantly, the improved PeLED shows a well-retained radiance of 80% at a current injection density of up to ≈1800 mA cm −1 , opening a new avenue for high-radiance PeLEDs with improved roll-off degradation.

Phosphomolybdic Acid-Modified Monolayer Graphene Anode for Efficient Organic and Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Lihui Liu,Ruimin Dong,Danqing Ye,Yao Lu,Pengfei Xia,Lingling Deng,Yu Duan,Kun Cao,Shufen Chen

Graphene is a promising flexible transparent electrode, and significant progress in graphene-based optoelectronic devices has been accomplished by reducing the sheet resistance and tuning the work function. Herein, phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) is proposed as a novel p-type chemical dopant for graphene, and the optical and electrical properties of graphene are investigated systematically. As a result, the monolayer graphene electrode with lower sheet resistance and work function are obtained while maintaining a high transmittance. The Raman spectrum proves the p-type doping effect of PMA on graphene, and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results reveal the mechanism, which is that the electrons transfer from graphene to PMA through the Mo–O–C bond. Furthermore, using the PMA-doped graphene anode, organic and perovskite light-emitting diodes obtained the maximum efficiencies of 129.3 and 15.6 cd/A with an increase of 50.8 and 36.8% compared with the pristine counterparts, respectively. This work confirms that PMA is a potential p-type chemical dopant to achieve an ideal graphene electrode and demonstrates the feasibility of PMA-doped graphene in the practical application of next-generation displays and solid-state lighting.

Structural Engineering for Efficient Transparent Vacuum-Deposited Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes toward Intelligent Display

Xiang Zhang,Jinghui Li,Peipei Du,Zixi Shen,Hao Chen,Haozhi Wang,Nian Liu,Junhu Cai,Jiajun Luo,Enguo Chen

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have attracted significant interest in next-generation intelligent displays. Vacuum deposition is a promising method for integrating PeLEDs into intelligent displays due to its high manufacturability and easy pixelation, as proven in industrial organic light-emitting diode production. However, achieving spatially confined grains with optimized crystal remains challenging in vacuum-deposited perovskite. Here, a trisource coevaporation strategy is proposed to introduce MABr to form the MAxCs1–xPbBr3 structure with carriers’ spatial confinement and defect suppression as well. This approach enables PeLEDs to contain excellent external quantum efficiency (EQE), which is nearly 10-fold as the untreated device. Based on this, we realize the first reported vacuum-deposited transparent PeLEDs with double-sided emission and an amazing maximum EQE of 7.6% by replacing Al with an optimized Ag:Mg electrode. These transparent PeLEDs are integrated into a bifunctional intelligent display device with both accurate heart rate detection and imaging display, which exhibit bright patterned emission and accurate heart rate detection.
