Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is one of the most widely used functional materials for hole transport layer in perovskite light-emitting diode (LED). Tuning its work function (WF) and conductivity (κ) is a key issue for promoting perovskite LED performance. While decreasing its WF always reduces its κ and vice versa. Solving such contradiction is quite significant for promoting the development and commercialization of perovskite LED. Herein, the aniline (Ani) is employed for PEDOT:PSS interface modification. Ani inserted between PEDOT and PSS to weaken electrostatic interaction between sulfonic acid group in PSS chain and thiophene group in PEDOT chain, which results in increased delocalized electrons to enhance its κ. More importantly, the acid–base reaction decreases high acidity of PEDOT:PSS, which is an effective way to increase its WF and decrease its interface defects density. Meanwhile, such interface modification avoids PEDOT:PSS phase separation and ensures the uniformity of film. After Ani modification, the WF of PEDOT:PSS increase from 5.16 to 5.31 eV, the κ increases from 0.30 to 8.62 S cm −1 , and the hole mobility enhances from 0.716 × 10 −6 to 1.306 × 10 −6 cm 2 V −1 s −1 . Modified PEDOT:PSS boost CsPbI 3 LED achieving a maximum external quantum efficiency of 17.70%.

Perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) have emerged as a next-generation light-emitting technology. Recent breakthroughs were made in achieving highly stable near-infrared and green PeLEDs. However, the operational lifetimes (T50) of visible PeLEDs under high current densities (>10 mA cm–2) remain unsatisfactory (normally <100 h), limiting the possibilities in solid-state lighting and AR/VR applications. This problem becomes more pronounced for mixed-halide (e.g., red and blue) perovskite emitters in which critical challenges such as halide segregation and spectral instability are present. Here, we demonstrate bright and stable red PeLEDs based on mixed-halide perovskites, showing measured T50 lifetimes of up to ∼357 h at currents of ≥25 mA cm–2, a record for the operational stability of visible PeLEDs under high current densities. The devices produce intense and stable emission with a maximum luminance of 28,870 cd m–2 (radiance: 1584 W sr–1 m–2), which is record-high for red PeLEDs. Key to this demonstration is the introduction of sulfonamide, a dipolar molecular stabilizer that effectively interacts with the ionic species in the perovskite emitters. It suppresses halide segregation and migration into the charge-transport layers, resulting in enhanced stability and brightness of the mixed-halide PeLEDs. These results represent a substantial step toward bright and stable PeLEDs for emerging applications.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on metal halide perovskites (PeLEDs) with high colour quality and facile solution processing are promising candidates for full-colour and high-definition displays 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 . Despite the great success achieved in green PeLEDs with lead bromide perovskites 5 , it is still challenging to realize pure-red (620–650 nm) LEDs using iodine-based counterparts, as they are constrained by the low intrinsic bandgap 6 . Here we report efficient and colour-stable PeLEDs across the entire pure-red region, with a peak external quantum efficiency reaching 28.7% at 638 nm, enabled by incorporating a double-end anchored ligand molecule into pure-iodine perovskites. We demonstrate that a key function of the organic intercalating cation is to stabilize the lead iodine octahedron through coordination with exposed lead ions and enhanced hydrogen bonding with iodine. The molecule synergistically facilitates spectral modulation, promotes charge transfer between perovskite quantum wells and reduces iodine migration under electrical bias. We realize continuously tunable emission wavelengths for iodine-based perovskite films with suppressed energy loss due to the decrease in bond energy of lead iodine in ionic perovskites as the bandgap increases. Importantly, the resultant devices show outstanding spectral stability and a half-lifetime of more than 7,600 min at an initial luminance of 100 cd m −2 .

Effectively balancing carrier injection of perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) for next-generation display and illumination urgently needs for molecularly understanding carrier injection behavior of electron transport layer (ETL)/perovskite toward further developing high performance PeLEDs. Here, we molecularly reveal the electron injection behaviors of PeLEDs by theoretically-experimentally decoupling the electron transport of ETLs and electron injection of TmPyPB/perovskite and TPBi/perovskite. Resulted, the better molecular planarity bridging effect (MPBE) of TmPyPB than TPBi can effectively increase electronic-coupling for the improved electron transport ability and significantly decrease injection barrier for the enhanced electron injection capability, intrinsically leading to a more balanced carrier injection and a less electron accumulation of PeLEDs. Compared to TPBi-based PeLEDs, the TmPyPB-based PeLEDs present the obviously-increased average EQE, current efficiency, power efficiency and luminance by 44 %, 63 %, 43 % and 100 %, respectively. Meanwhile, this PeLED shows a higher voltage tolerance characteristic of 7.5 V than that of TPBi-based PeLEDs (6.25 V). Therefore, this work may provide a fundamental insight into carrier injection behavior of PeLEDs for effectively-regulating its carrier injection balance and further for its greatly-facilitated commercialization.

Pure-red perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) based on CsPb(Br/I) 3 nanocrystals (NCs) usually suffer from a compromise in emission efficiency and spectral stability on account of the surface halide vacancies-induced nonradiative recombination loss, halide phase segregation, and self-doping effect. Herein, a “halide-equivalent” anion of benzenesulfonate (BS – ) is introduced into CsPb(Br/I) 3 NCs as multifunctional additive to simultaneously address the above challenging issues. Joint experiment-theory characterizations reveal that the BS – can not only passivate the uncoordinated Pb 2+ -related defects at the surface of NCs, but also increase the formation energy of halide vacancies. Moreover, because of the strong electron-withdrawing property of sulfonate group, electrons are expected to transfer from the CsPb(Br/I) 3 NC to BS – for reducing the self-doping effect and altering the n-type behavior of CsPb(Br/I) 3 NCs to near ambipolarity. Eventually, synergistic boost in device performance is achieved for pure-red PeLEDs with CIE coordinates of (0.70, 0.30) and a champion external quantum efficiency of 23.5%, which is one of the best value among the ever-reported red PeLEDs approaching to the Rec. 2020 red primary color. Moreover, the BS – -modified PeLED exhibits negligible wavelength shift under different operating voltages. This strategy paves an efficient way for improving the efficiency and stability of pure-red PeLEDs.

Voltage loading-induced change in the electroluminescence (EL) wavelength of mixed halide perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs), so-called color-shift, has become an inevitable phenomenon, which is seriously unfavorable to their applications in lighting and display. Here, we achieve color-stable blue PeLEDs via a hydrogen-bonded amine-group doping strategy. Selecting guanidine (GA) or formamidinium (FA) as amine-group (−NH 2 ) doping source for CsPbBr x Cl 3− x quantum dots (QDs), experimental and theoretical results reveal that the strong N−H⋯X (X = Br/Cl) bonding can be produced between −NH 2 dopants and Pb−X lattices, thereby increasing the migration barrier of halide anions. Resultantly, color-stable sky-blue devices were realized with emission peaks fixed at 490.5 (GA) and 492.5 (FA) nm without any obvious shift as the voltage increases, in sharp contrast devices without N−H⋯X producing a 15 nm red-shift from 487 to 502 nm. Not only that, maximum external quantum efficiency is improved to 3.02% and 4.14% from the initial 1.3%. This finding offers a convenient boulevard to achieve color-stable PeLEDs with high efficiency.

Solution-processed semiconductor lasers promise lightweight, wearable and scalable optoelectronic applications. Among the gain media for solution-processed lasers, metal halide perovskites stand out as an exceptional class because of their ability to achieve wavelength-adjustable, low-threshold lasing under optical pumping 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 . Despite the progress in this field, electrically driven lasing from perovskite semiconductors remains a critical challenge. Here we demonstrate an electrically driven perovskite laser, constructed by vertically integrating a low-threshold single-crystal perovskite microcavity sub-unit with a high-power microcavity perovskite LED (PeLED) sub-unit. Under pulsed electrical excitation, the dual-cavity perovskite device shows a minimum lasing threshold of 92 A cm −2 (average threshold: 129 A cm −2 , at about 22 °C, in air), which is an order of magnitude lower than that of state-of-the-art electrically driven organic lasers 9 , 10 . Key to this demonstration is the integrated dual-cavity device architecture, which allows the microcavity PeLED sub-unit to deliver directional emission into the single-crystal perovskite microcavity sub-unit (at a coupling efficiency of about 82.7%) to establish the lasing action. An operational half-life ( T 50 ) of 1.8 h (6.4 × 10 4 voltage pulses at 10 Hz) is achieved, outperforming the stability of electrically pumped organic lasers 9 , 10 . The dual-cavity perovskite laser can be rapidly modulated at a bandwidth of 36.2 MHz, indicating its potential for data transmission and computational applications.

Room temperature phase instability of cubic CsPbI 3 perovskite nanocrystals is one of the notorious limitations for practical applications in optoelectronic fields. Herein, the incorporation of Ni 2+ ions into CsPbI 3 lattice was successfully achieved by a modified hot-injection method using nickel acetate as doping precursor. The as-prepared Ni 2+ (3.3 mol%): CsPbI 3 nanocrystals exhibited an improved, near-unity (95%~100%) photoluminescence quantum yield owing to the enhanced radiative decay rate and the decreased non-radiative decay rate. Additionally, Ni-doping was demonstrated to stabilize CsPbI 3 lattice and the Ni 2+ : CsPbI 3 film and colloidal solution can retain their red luminescence up to 15 days and 7 months in atmosphere, respectively. First-principle calculations verified that the significantly improved optical performance and stability of Ni 2+ : CsPbI 3 nanocrystals arose primarily from the increased formation energy due to the successful doping of Ni 2+ in CsPbI 3 . Benefiting from such an effective doping strategy, the as-prepared Ni 2+ -doped CsPbI 3 perovskite nanocrystals can function well as efficient red-light emitter toward the fabrication of high-performance perovskite LED with a peak external quantum efficiency of ~7%.

The performance of the blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) is limited by the low photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and the unstable emission centers. In this work, we incorporate sodium bromide and acesulfame potassium into a quasi-2D perovskite to control the dimension distribution and promote the PLQYs. Benefiting from the efficient energy cascade channel and passivation, the sky-blue PeLED has an external quantum efficiency of 9.7% and no shift of the electroluminescence center under operation voltages from 4 to 8 V. Moreover, the half lifetime of the devices reaches 325 s, 3.3 times that of control devices without additives. This work provides new insights into enhancing the performance of blue PeLEDs.
