The lithium titanium oxide ion sieve with good structural stability and high adsorption capacity is generally considered to be a promising adsorbent for lithium recovery. Herein, the lithium ion sieve precursor Li 2 TiO 3 was prepared based on amorphous TiO 2 , and then Li + was acid-eluted to obtain the lithium adsorbent H 2 TiO 3 , denoted as HTO-Am. The structure and adsorption properties of HTO-Am were investigated, and the results demonstrated that the HTO-Am prepared at the optimum temperature had excellent adsorption properties for Li + . The adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm equations, indicating that lithium is adsorbed chemically and monolayer on HTO-Am. HTO-Am ion sieves were prepared successfully for the first time and exhibited high selectivity, favorable adsorption rate, and cycle performance for Li + .

Coating the carbon layer onto the surface of TiO 2 electrode is seen as an effective strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries , particularly the reduced charge transfer resistance . The reduced charge transfer resistance was attributed to the chemical bonding between the phases. In this paper, however, we show that it is not only the chemical bonding but also the change of the activation energy differences that is responsible. Herein, we fabricate the carbon layer coated TiO 2 electrode (TiO 2 /C) and combine the recently proposed modified Planck-Nernst-Poisson coupled Frumkin-Butler-Volmer (MPNP-FBV) model to address the above-mentioned issues. By combining the experimental results with the electrochemical model, the charge transfer resistance and the interface behaviors are analyzed. The results show that the performance of TiO 2 /C electrode based cells is determined by the carbon layer/TiO 2 interface, while the cells based on TiO 2 electrodes are limited by the electrolyte/TiO 2 interface. Comparison between the electrochemical simulations and the experimental data indicates that this increased activation energy difference leads to the decrease of the charge transfer resistance. These results imply that activation energy difference across the interfaces can be a critical parameter for designing high performance batteries .

Electrolysis-based technology is a potential low-cost method for Li extraction from seawater that can bridge the gap between the supply and demand. An all-solid-state electrochemical device can effectively prevent the side reactions of metallic lithium and liquid organic electrolyte. However, its Li-ion conductivity is at least three orders of magnitude lower than expected due to extremely poor wetting between the metallic Li and the solid-state electrolyte (SSE). To overcome this problem, an artificial interface-modified solid-state sandwich device with a TiO 2 layer (Li/TiO 2 /SSE) is developed. The lithiated Li x TiO 2 film improves physical contact between Li and the SSE, and the interfacial resistance is reduced by 2–3 orders of magnitude. The average Li extraction efficiency of the solid-state device reaches 110 μg-Li/cm 2 over 1 h in natural seawater via a flow-through column system. Charging voltage fluctuations of ±0.05V reveal the stability and reliability of the artificially modified device over 40 cycles. These superior properties demonstrate the potential of this system as a next-generation electrolysis-based device for Li extraction from natural seawater.

Graphical Quick recharge : Hierarchically structured TiO 2 /micron carbon fibers composites composed of well-defined nanowires are fabricated through a straightforward impregnation−calcination process. Owing to its unique features, the material delivers an excellent cycling stability with 92 % capacity retention after 5000 cycles at a high current density of 2000 mA g −1 , highlighting its great potential for ultralong, fast, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Long-life lithium-ion batteries require materials with well-designed and controlled structures on nanometer and micrometer scales. Therefore, the hierarchically structured TiO 2 /micron carbon fibers composites (TiO 2 /MCFs) composed of well-defined nanowires are fabricated through a straightforward impregnation-calcination process. The unique features, including hierarchically mesoporous micro-/nanostructures, large specific surface area, and high electrical conductivity endow the TiO 2 /MCFs with convenient lithium-ion and electron diffusion channels and effective stress−strain relief during repeated electrochemical reaction process. As anticipated, TiO 2 /MCFs deliver an excellent cycling stability with 92 % capacity retention after 5000 cycles at high current density of 2000 mA g −1 , highlighting the great potential for long-life and fast-charging lithium-ion batteries.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been widely used as an alternative anodic material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its ultrahigh capacity retention and long cycle lifespan. However, the restriction of lithium insertion, intrinsically poor electronic conductivity, and sluggish lithium ionic kinetics of bulk TiO2 hinder their specific capacity and rate performance. Herein, LiTiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) are synthesized via a facile ball milling method by the reaction of anatase TiO2 with LiH. The as-prepared LiTiO2 NPs have strong structural stability and a “zero strain” effect during the repeated intercalation/deintercalation, even at low potential. As anodic materials for LIBs, LiTiO2 NPs exhibit a superior rate performance of ∼100 mA h g–1 at 10C (3350 mA g–1) with a capacity retention of 100% after 1000 cycles, which is 5 times higher than that of the original commercial anatase TiO2 powder. The higher specific capacity of LiTiO2 NPs is attributed to the increased conversion of Ti3+ to Ti2+ on the porous surface of LiTiO2 NPs, which provides a more capacitive contribution. This study not only provides a new fabrication approach toward Ti-based anodes for ultrafast LIBs but also underscores the potential importance of embedding lithium into transition metal oxides as a strategy for boosting their electrochemical performance.

Laser cutting electrode technology is an environmentally friendly and sustainable manufacturing method that offers many benefits, such as low energy consumption and greenhouse gases, no waste production, no tool wear, flexible manipulation, and multi-scale processing. However, achieving high cutting quality with adjustable notch shape and controllable dimension precision is still a cutting-edge challenge. In addition, the influence of laser cutting on the microscopic structure and electrochemical performance of battery electrodes has not been fully illustrated. Here, the Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) electrode is cut using a femtosecond laser technology. The processing parameters are systematically optimized, and the influence of laser cutting taper structure on the structure and performance of LTO electrodes is comprehensively investigated. It is found that laser photoionization and the generated plasma could create oxygen vacancies and thus more Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ defects in the LTO electrodes, resulting in increased electronic conductivity. Moreover, proper taper structure could help improve electrolyte infiltration as well as Li + diffusion kinetics. As a result, the laser cutting LTO electrode with the optimized taper angle of T = 0.004 shows excellent electrochemical performance. The capacity retention is more than 99.2 % after 400 cycles at 1C, and the specific capacity reaches ∼60 mAh g −1 at a high rate of 60C, which is about 1.7 times higher than that of mechanically cutting LTO electrodes. The outstanding electrochemical performance is also demonstrated by LiFePO 4 ||Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 full cells. This work could pave the way for the development and application of laser technology in cutting battery electrodes.

TiO 2 is a promising lithium-ion battery anode due to its good operation safety enabled by its voltage profile. However, the intrinsically low electronic/ionic conductivity and moderate reversible capacity compromise its potential for practical applications. It is proposed in this work to incorporate super-small sized metallic high capacity tin-based nanoparticles into TiO 2 /carbon nanohybrids, coupled with in situ generation of mesoporous structures. Difunctional methacrylate resin monomers are used as the solvent and carbon source, followed by carbonization and hydrofluoric (HF) etching treatment. The precursors of TiO 2 , tin-based component, and SiO x porogen agent are homogeneously integrated into the cross-linking network at a molecular level. High reversible capacities, excellent rate capability, and good capacity retention are achieved simultaneously due to synergistic effects from the tin-based component bearing high capacity and good electron conductivity, and mechanical buffer medium of the mesoporous structures. Reversible capacities of 452 mAh g −1 are achieved after 400 cycles at 200 mA g −1 . High rate capacity of 131 mAh g −1 is maintained at 5 A g −1 . The overall capacities are increased by more than 2 times compared with the capacities of the tin-free TiO 2 /C and pristine TiO 2 /SnO 2 /Sn/SiO x /C nanohybrids.

Lithium titanate (Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 , LTO) has several disadvantages as active material for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) such as low conductivity and poor capacity. To overcome these drawbacks and specifically to improve electrical performance of LTO, we used solvothermal method to synthesis LTO and to dope it simultaneously with Al and Mn. Doped LTO was then incorporated into composites containing graphene (G), carbon nanotube (CNT) or carbon quantum dots (CQDs) to enhance specific capacity and conductivity of LIB anodes containing these composites as active materials. To have a further study of different carbon materials composite with doped LTO, these materials we obtained were thoroughly characterized. LTO doping and incorporation into composites not only increased its specific capacity and also decreased its impedance. Al 3+ and Mn 4+ substituted Ti 4+ located at 16 d sites. First cycle specific capacity values and impedance values of anodes consisting of composites containing doped LTO and G, CNT or CQDs were 261.7, 286.2 and 296.5 mA h/g (at C/10 rate) and 13.99, 8.28, 18.79 Ω, respectively. Capacity retention after 100 cycles for these anodes was 84.6, 90.67 and 83.4%. LTO doping by Al 3+ and Mn 4+ and combining it with G, CNT or CQDs effectively improved its electrochemical performance. The best performance was obtained for anodes containing composites consisting of a combination of doped LTO and CNT.

Polyethylene oxide (PEO) was one of the most classic and widely used solid polymer electrolyte matrixes. In this work, we added the previously synthesized titanium dioxide (B-P25) fillers with oxygen vacancies to the PEO-LiClO 4 solid electrolyte system. It is found that compared with the pristine P25 fillers, the oxygen vacancies lead to the decrease of ionic conductivity and the Li + transference number. Infrared and Raman spectroscopy shows that the introduction of oxygen vacancies lead to the formation of Li + -ClO 4 − ion pairs and the decrease of carrier concentration resulted in the decrease of Li + conductivity. Further theoretical calculations verified that this is due to the preferential combination of oxygen vacancies and ether oxygen atoms of PEO. This finding effectively supplements the effect of oxide oxygen vacancies on the conduction of Li + in the PEO matrix, and not all oxygen vacancies are beneficial to the conduction of Li + ions in the PEO matrix.

Titanium oxide (TiO2) has attracted great interest as a promising anode material for lithium (Li) ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium (Na) ion batteries (SIBs). However, the key factors that dictate the Li-ion and Na-ion storage and transportation in TiO2 remain unclear. Herein, we report a facile hydrolysis route to crafting a variety of high tap-density TiO2 spheres with controllable size and hierarchical pores. The Li-ion and Na-ion storage properties based on these TiO2 spheres were systematically investigated. The pore distribution and the size of TiO2 spheres were found to exert profound influence on the Li-ion and Na-ion storage and transportation. The Li-ion storage and transportation in dense TiO2 spheres was dependent mainly upon the micropore distribution and volume and independent of the size of spheres. In contrast, the excellent Na-ion storage and transportation in TiO2 spheres was enabled by the loose structure with a large macroscopic pore volume and shortened Na-ion diffusion length. High tap-density TiO2 spheres (1.06 g cm−3) with superior Li-ion and Na-ion storage properties were produced, exhibiting a Li-ion storage specific capacity of 189 mA h g−1 at 1C and a high capacity retention of 88.1% after 100 cycles, and a Na-ion storage specific capacity of 184 mA h g−1 at 1C and capacity retention of 90.5% after 200 cycles. The ability to understand the critical factors controlling the Li-ion and Na-ion storage in high tap-density TiO2 spheres enables their implementation for practical applications in Li-ion and Na-ion batteries.

As a negative electrode material, the main drawbacks of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) are its low electric conductivity and poor Li-ion diffusion coefficient. Fortunately, elements modification to address these problems is an effective method. Herein, we firstly report Ni and F co-modified LTO material which is synthesized via a solid-state reaction. Powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were conducted to investigate the structure and morphology. Afterwards, we surprisingly find that Ni and F co-modification can reduce the overall charge transfer resistance of LTO for part of Ti 4+ converts into Ti 3+ and Ni 2+ ions supply the charge carriers. When test in battery, a superior discharge capacity of 236.1 mAh g −1 at 0.036 A g −1 is obtained, much higher than that of pristine LTO (196.9 mAh g −1 ). Furthermore, it still retains a discharge capacity of 174.6 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.18 A g −1 and exhibits an excellent rate performance.

Lithium titanate (Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 /LTO) has been widely recognized for its superior stability and long cycle life as a negative electrode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, its limited specific capacity and poor rate performance have hindered broader applications. This study introduces an innovative approach to address these limitations by preparing Zr-doped Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 coated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (LTO-0.1Zr@rGO) using a wet chemical method combined with freeze-drying technology. The incorporation of Zr ions into the LTO lattice resulted in an increase in the lattice parameter and the unit cell volume. This increase facilitated the transmission of lithium ions and enhanced the material's conductivity. Furthermore, the rGO coating was found to significantly enhance the rate performance and cycle stability of the material. The LTO-0.1Zr@rGO composite demonstrated a high rate capacity ranging from 396.5 to 263.6 mAh g −1 at current densities varying from 0.2 to 5.0 A g −1 , with a stable capacity of 310.2 mAh g −1 maintained after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1.0 A g −1 . These results indicate the potential of LTO-0.1Zr@rGO as a promising anode material for high-rate and stable lithium-ion batteries.
