Few-layer large Ti3C2Tx sheets exfoliated by NaHF2 and applied to the sodium-ion battery

Yan Zhao,Meng Zhang,Hong Yan,Yu Feng,Xinyu Zhang,Ruijie Guo

Since the original discovery, MXene can be synthesized by wet-chemical etching from the MAX phase. To avoid the shortcomings of the previous etchant, NaHF2 aqueous solution was used for the selective removal of Al from Ti3AlC2, while intercalating Na+ between layers. The d-spacing of the resulting accordion-like Ti3C2Tx is up to 12.35 Å; the by-product Na3AlF6 can be removed by H2SO4, and the product yield can reach about 85%. After a short time of centrifugation and sonication, few-layer (10–20 layers) Ti3C2Tx sheets in a large lateral size (3–4 μm) can be prepared, with high conductivity up to 2.3 × 105 S m−1. Ti3C2Tx can be stably dispersed in water and organic solvents for at least 96 h, and has excellent anti-thermal-oxidation ability. As the anode for sodium ion batteries, the Ti3C2Tx electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 70 mA h g−1 after 900 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1 with an extremely low-capacity decay rate. From 900 to 1000 cycles, the capacity can even be increased to 130 mA h g−1, and the Coulomb efficiency is close to 100%, showing that MXene can provide a stable structure for the Na+ cycle.

A hierarchical nano-MoS2 flake/micro-MXene lamellar complex structure within a carbon coating for rapid sodium-ion storage

Bingjie Wen,Nizao Kong,Min Huang,Liqin Fu,Yexin Tian,Zhixiao Liu,Zhongchao Wang,Lezhi Yang,Fei Han

A single two-dimensional material often struggles to satisfy all the performance requirements of electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries. However, constructing a hierarchical heterogeneous two-dimensional stacking structure can effectively combine the advantages of multiple materials and make up for the insufficiency of a single element. This work applied a pre-intercalation–sulphuration concept and liquid-phase coating modification by constructing a hierarchical nano-flake/micro-lamellar complex structure. In this composite material, MoS2 nanosheets and V2C MXene layers overlap and interact to prevent nanoparticle agglomeration and micron flakes collapse simultaneously. The MoS2/MXene hierarchical structure is sandwiched between ultrathin and dense carbon layers to form a multifaceted conductive skeleton and a twofold protection mechanism. The coating reduces the electrolyte contact area and prevents the escape of polysulfide byproducts. Accordingly, the designed MSVC@C demonstrates superior Na+ storage capacities (612.4 mA h g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 after 600 cycles) and outstanding rate performance (304.42 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1). Experimental results and theoretical calculations verify that the MoS2 and V2C heterostructure promotes the electrochemical performance owing to the better electronic conductivity and lower ion diffusion energy barrier. Moreover, this structure optimization strategy applies to various MXene guests (e.g., V2C and Nb2C) to prepare a variety of hierarchical nano–micro structures that are expected to be promising two-dimensional electrode materials for SIBs with application prospects in the future.

MXene-Bonded hollow MoS2/Carbon sphere strategy for high-performance flexible sodium ion storage

Zeyu Yuan,Junming Cao,Shulga Valerii,Hao Xu,Lili Wang,Wei Han

Sodium-ion batteries, as a promising alternative to the lithium-ion battery, have attracted extensive attention. However, due to the larger ion radius and higher standard reduction potential, the sodium-ion batteries still face poor cycle stability and relatively low energy density problems. In this work, a carbon sphere-supported Nb 2 CT x MXene/MoS 2 hierarchical structure has been designed and synthesized through hydrothermal and electrostatic self-assembly methods. The design strategy successfully improves the utilization efficiency of the MoS 2 carbon sphere as a support skeleton and reducing the diffusion path length of Na ions, leading to an improved specific capacity and rate performance. Moreover, Nb 2 CT x sheets also effectively inhibit the capacity attenuation caused by MoS 2 shedding, thus achieving the long cycle life of the sodium-ion battery. As a result, the carbon-supported MXene/MoS 2 anode delivers an ultrahigh reversible capacity, long cycling stability, and superior capacity retention rate. Notably, the carbon-supported MXene/MoS 2 anode can also obtain a considerable capacity of 196 mAh g −1 at a current density of 20 A g −1 . The full cell of SIBs was assembled, and the flexibility of the battery was tested. The density functional theory simulation results show that the sodium ion has a smaller diffusion barrier under this material design strategy.

Gentle self-assembled freeze–thaw synthesis of graphene/SnO2 composite aerogel for sodium-ion battery anodes

Shuo Yu,Caixia Huo,Kui Hao,Le Sun,Yuqing Peng,Aijun Li

We report a novel mild self-assembly freeze–thaw strategy for fabricating 3D graphene aerogel (GA) composite anchored with SnO 2 nanoparticles. Compared with conventional hydrothermal and freeze-drying methods, The method achieves energy-efficient synthesis (90 °C, 3 h) and eliminates complex equipment. Efficient dispersion of SnO 2 nanoparticles and precise modulation of the 3D porous structure were achieved through the synergistic effects of self-assembly, foaming, and in-situ reduction at low temperature and atmospheric pressure. The unique structure of GA/SnO 2 composites significantly buffers the volume expansion of SnO 2 and enhances the ion/electron transport kinetics. As a sodium-ion battery anode, it provides a high reversible capacity of 302.5 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 and a remarkable rate capability (146 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 ), outperforming aggregated SnO 2 synthesized via hydrothermal routes. DFT simulations reveal enhanced sodium-ion adsorption energy and interfacial C Sn O covalent bonding, which synergistically stabilize the electrode structure. This work provides a low-cost and environmentally friendly route for designing high-performance metal oxide/carbon composites.

Double additive electrolyte solvation engineering to achieve long cycle and high capacity sodium-ion battery

Enmin Li,Xin Tang,Juncheng Zhou,Haomiao Zhao,Jinhan Teng,Junjie Huang,Binghan Dai,Tianming Lu,Qingdong Tao,Kaibo Zhang,Weifeng Deng,Jing Li

Sodium-ion batteries are a promising energy storage system due to their rich sodium resources and many other advantages. However, its development is severely hampered by the electrolyte's low compatibility with the electrode contact. Herein, we propose a solvation control strategy with ethoxy (pentafluoro) cyclotriphosphazene (PFPN) and NaClO 4 double additives to reconstruct the solvation structure of sodium ions in electrolytes. This enables the electrolyte to form a dense and stable solid electrolyte interlayer (SEI) and double-layer cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) on the surface of the electrode material to achieve long-cycle and high-capacity sodium-ion batteries. PFPN can form a stable SEI rich in inorganic components at the anode interface. ClO 4 - can first reach the cathode surface to create a NaCl and polymer-like chain CEI with sodium ions and solvents, and then the PFPN derivatives are migrated to the cathode surface to open the ring and decompose, thus forming a double-layer stable CEI. Therefore, the PEDN electrolyte can simultaneously improve the interface stability of the battery's cathode and anode solid electrolyte. Hence, the capacity retention rate of the 4.5 Ah Na 3 Fe 2 (PO 4 )P 2 O 7 (NFP)||hard carbon (HC) pouch cell after 2500 cycles at 1C is 88.26%.

Designing innovative heterostructures composed of TiO2/Bi2Te3/carbon cloth for highly efficient sodium-ion batteries

Manshu Han,Yirong Zhao,Yongfeng Bai,Yu Li,Minghua Chen,Qingguo Chen

Bi-based materials can retain massive amounts of sodium ions through alloying and conversion reactions, resulting in excellent theoretical capacity. However, during the sodiation/desodiation process, there is always a significant volume change in the alloying reaction. In this work, TiO2-coated hexagonal-phase topological insulator (TI) Bi2Te3 composites grown on carbon cloth (CC) were prepared using a solvothermal reaction and an atomic layer deposition process (TiO2/Bi2Te3/CC) as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries without the need for a binder. Compared to the pure Bi2Te3 electrode, the optimized TiO2/Bi2Te3/CC composite exhibits a superior specific capacity of 450 mA h g−1, a high rate performance of 0.1 A g−1, and a high cycling stability of 100 cycles due to the inherent properties of TIs, contributed by the effective TiO2 cladding layer and large interfacial spacing of Bi2Te3. The enhanced reversible capacitance, rate capability, and cycling performances can be attributed to the heterointerfaces and excellent mechanical properties of TiO2, which balance the electronic structure of the building blocks and inhibit the detaching of Bi2Te3 due to large internal stresses. The amorphous TiO2/Bi2Te3/CC composite was treated in a tubular furnace to obtain crystalline TiO2/Bi2Te3/CC, and the electrochemical performance of the heterostructures formed by the TiO2 coating layer with different properties was compared. This work demonstrates the enormous potential for enhancing the sodium-ion storage capabilities of alloy electrode materials by constructing heterostructures.

Regulating microstructure in agar-derived N-doped hard carbon towards enhanced sodium ion storage

Yuhan Ji,Tong Wang,Xu Yao,Jingkui Gao,Yanting Chu,Jingwen Sun,Haitao Dong,Jingquan Sha

Hard carbon (HC) with larger interlayer spacing, lower operation potential and stable skeleton is a promising kind of anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), where heteroatom doping and structural design have been proved to be effective strategies to improve its Na + storage performance. Herein, biomass agar-derived N-doped porous carbon (NPC-Ts, T  = 750, 900 and 1050 °C) were successfully fabricated by modulating carbonization temperature, where interlayer spacing, specifical surface area (SSA), micro/mesopore amount and N-doping levels and configurations (pyridinic N (N-6), pyrrolic N (N-5) and graphite N (N-Q)) were explored in detail. Among the NPC-900 shows the largest interlayer spacing (0.412 nm), SSA (3991 m 2 /g) and sum percentage of N-6 and N-5 (76.7 %). When applied as anode material for SIBs, NPC-900 exhibits the highly reversible capacity (430.9 mAh/g at 100 mA/g after 100 cycles) and excellent rate capability (162 mAh/g at 5000 mA/g) and outstanding cycle life (242.6 mAh/g at 1000 mA/g after 5000 cycles). More importantly, when coupled with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP) cathode, the Na + full cell displays the highest practical energy density of 267 Wh/kg to date, to the best our knowledge, revealing its potential practical sodium storage applications.

A Ru-Doped VTi2.6O7.2 Anode with High Conductivity for Enhanced Sodium Storage

Guangwan Zhang,Chunhua Han,Kang Han,Jinshuai Liu,Jinghui Chen,Haokai Wang,Lei Zhang,Xuanpeng Wang

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are considered a potential replacement for lithium-ion batteries in the area of low-cost large-scale energy storage. Due to its low operating voltage, high capacity, non-toxicity and low production cost, titanium dioxide is now among the anode materials under investigation and shows the most promise. However, its poor electrical conductivity is one of the main reasons limiting its large-scale application. Herein, we designed a ruthenium-doped anatase-type VTi2.6O7.2ultrafine nanocrystal (Ru-VTO). As the anode of SIBs, Ru-VTO delivers a high specific capacity of 297 mAh g−1at 50 mA g−1, a long cycle life of 2000 cycles and a high rate capability (104 mAh g−1at 1000 mA g−1). The excellent performance may be related to the solid-solution interatomic interactions and the enhanced conductivity after ruthenium doping. These studies demonstrate the potential of Ru-VTO as an anode material for advanced SIBs.Keywords:titanium-based material;ru doping;high conductivity;anode;sodium-ion battery

Stabilizing black phosphorus-based anodes with MXene and carbon nanotubes for high-rate sodium-ion batteries

Wenqiang Ai,Jinnuo Yang,Jiahui Lv,Ya'nan Zheng,Ruiqi Wang,Yang Liu,Lei Zu,Huiqin Lian

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) attract significant interest due to the abundance and affordability of sodium resources, alongside their environmentally sustainable profile. Nevertheless, further research is required to improve high-rate performance and long-term cycling stability. Black phosphorus (BP), with its high theoretical specific capacity, and MXenes, known for their excellent electrical conductivity and multiple functional groups, are both promising anode candidates for SIBs. To address these challenges, a composite anode of BP/Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (BMC) containing phosphorus-oxygen-titanium (P-O-Ti) bonds is prepared through a straightforward two-step ball milling process. The microstructure and bonding conformation of the BMC composite material are studied using a variety of characterization methods. Compared to the BP/CNTs (BC) anode, the BMC anode demonstrates superior cycling stability and high-rate performance. Kinetic analysis further reveals favorable electrochemical performance. The P-O-Ti bonds in BMC significantly enhance SIBs performance by stabilizing the BP-based composite structure. As a result, the reversible specific capacity of BMC anode reaches 630.7 mAh g −1 after 1400 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 . Furthermore, the reversible specific capacity remains stable at 281.1 mAh g −1 even after 1000 cycles at 10.0 A g −1 . This work presents a straightforward method for preparing BMC anodes.

High-Capacity Sb/Fe2S3 Sodium-Ion Battery Anodes Fabricated by a One-Step Redox Reaction, Followed by Ball Milling with Graphite

Ying Chu,Peng Wang,Yihong Ding,Jie Lin,Xinxin Zhu,Shiqiang Zhao,Huile Jin,Tianbiao Zeng

Antimony (Sb) has been considered a promising anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to its high theoretical capacity (660 mA h g–1) and low redox voltage (0.2–0.9 V vs Na+/Na). However, the capacity degradation caused by the volumetric variation during battery discharge/charge hinders the practical application. Herein, guided by the DFT calculation, Sb/Fe2S3 was fabricated by annealing Fe and Sb2S3 mixed powder. Next, Sb/Fe2S3 was blended with 15 wt % graphite by ball milling, yielding nano-Sb/Fe2S3 anchored on an exfoliated graphite composite (denoted as Sb/Fe2S3-15%). When applied as an anode of SIBs, Sb/Fe2S3-15% delivered reversible capacities of 565, 542, 467, 366, 285, and 236 mA h g–1 at current rates of 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 A g–1, respectively, surpassing most of the Sb-based anodes. The co-existence of highly conductive Fe2S3 and Sb minimizes the polarization of the anode. Our experiments proved that the Sb and Fe2S3 phases were reversible during discharge/charge cycling, and the exfoliated graphite can accelerate the Na+ diffusion and e– conduction. The proposed synthesis method of this work can also be applicable to synthesize various antimony/transition metal sulfide heterostructures (Sb/M1–xS), which may be applied in a series of fields.

Renming Zhan,Bolei Shen,Qiuju Xu,Youquan Zhang,Yushan Luo,Heng Liu,Hao Chen,Feng Liu,Changming Li,Maowen Xu

Pristine Na 3 Fe 0.5 V 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 and carbon-coated Na 3 Fe 0.5 V 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 nano-particles are synthesized by one-step solid-phase reaction method. The full battery based on Na 3 Fe 0.5 V 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 @C nano-particles as cathode and commercial hard carbon as anode outputs a high working voltage about 3.3 V and exhibits superior-rate performance. While the rate increases from 0.5 to 1, 2 and 5 C, the discharge capacity of full battery slightly decreases from 110 to 94, 88, 79 mA h g −1 gradually. Moreover, it shows excellent cycle stability with a capacity retention of 93.8% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C.

Understanding and Mitigating Lattice Collapse Degradation in Layered Oxide Materials for Sodium-Ion Battery Anode

Lixun Cheng,Xiaonan Luo,Binghui Ge

Na2Ti3O7 has attracted significant attention due to its ecofriendliness and cost-effectiveness for sodium-ion batteries. However, their limited cycling stability hampers their practical applications. Herein, we elucidate a mechanism of structural degradation caused by the heterogeneous phase transition in the Na2Ti3O7 anode using aberration-corrected (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (S)TEM and in situ TEM. It is found that the unevenly distributed phase transition results in the accumulation of strain, which promotes the growth of microcracks and eventually leads to structural decomposition and electrochemical failure. Motivated by this degradation mechanism, nanowires were proposed, and the structural stability is thus improved with the lattice strain effectively released. These findings deepen our understanding of ion transport and degradation mechanisms in intercalated layered electrode materials while emphasizing the significance of the material structure engineered for improving electrode performance.
