Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of great significance to produce clean, sustainable, and cost-effective hydrogen. However, the development of low-cost and high-efficiency non-noble-metal catalysts with a combination of superior catalytic activity and long-time stability still remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a rationally designed three-dimensional architecture assembled from one-dimensional molybdenum carbide (MoC)-based nanoribbons where the MoC nanoparticles are embedded within the nitrogen-doped crystallized carbon nanolayers (MoC@NC nanoribbon). Such unique architecture of the MoC@NC nanoribbon not only provides abundant edge active sites and multielectron pathways for efficient mass/charge transportation but also greatly accelerates the hydrogen release from the reaction surface, thus boosting its electrocatalytic performances for HER either in an acid or in an alkaline aqueous solution. This advance provides a promising candidate toward the replacement of the noble-metal-based catalysts for a highly stable and efficient HER electrocatalysis.

Plasmonic hybrid catalysts have attracted great interest for the reduction of nitrobenzene waste to valuable aminobenzene, because they can use renewable solar energy to accelerate the catalytic reaction. However, the economical synthesis of non-precious plasmonic hybrid catalysts remains a big challenge. Herein we report the synthesis of plasmonic MoO2-embedded MoNi4 nanosheets (MoNi4–MoO2) by thermal annealing of NiMoO4 at 600 °C under a hydrogen atmosphere. The MoNi4–MoO2 hybrid catalysts retain strong plasmon absorption from MoO2 and demonstrate good catalytic activity from MoNi4 for 4-nitrophenol reduction in the dark. Under visible light irradiation, the excitation of MoO2 plasmon promotes the catalytic reaction further due to hot electron-induced increase of catalytic activity of MoNi4. In addition, the hybrid catalysts are relatively stable even under illumination reaction conditions.

In this study, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) embedding molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C)/cobalt (Co)-molybdenum (Mo) bimetallic carbide heterostructure electrocatalysts (denoted as A-B/CNFs) were prepared via electrospinning and high-temperature carbonization . Owing to the synergistic interaction between Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 and Mo 2 C components, the catalyst activity is improved. Furthermore, the rich mesoporous structure and electrical conductivity of CNFs, accelerate the reaction kinetics. As a result, the optimized Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 -Mo 2 C/CNFs-1 has excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activity . With the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotential is only 94 mV, and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential is 295 mV in an alkaline electrolyte . Building an alkaline electrolyzer with Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 -Mo 2 C/CNFs-1 as the anode and cathode electrodes requires a low cell voltage of only 1.66 V to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , while maintaining ideal durability. This research offers a versatile and effective approach to creating bimetallic-based monolithic hydrolysis electrocatalysts .

Herein, we present a stepwise approach for constructing 3-dimensional porous carbon foam pretreated via glutaraldehyde cross-linking and decorated with highly dispersed molybdenum carbide ( CF-Glu-Mo ) or Co-doped FeNi carbonate hydroxide ( CF-Glu-CoFeNi ), which is structurally derived from the initial chitosan hydrogel. The as-prepared CF-Glu-Mo and CF-Glu-CoFeNi can act as mono-functional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. In 1.0 M KOH, CF-Glu-Mo exhibits a small overpotential of 88 mV with a low Tafel slope of 56 mV dec −1 under the working condition of 10 mA cm −2 for HER, and CF-Glu-CoFeNi requires an overpotential of 290 mV for OER to reach a current density of 50 mA cm −2 , accompanied by a low Tafel slope of 115 mV dec −1 . In this case, these integrated electrodes derived from the robust interconnection between the electrocatalyst and the chitosan hydrogel derived carbon foam make the whole water decomposition behavior more direct and efficient, which is reasonably attributed to hierarchically porous nanostructures and intrinsically high conductivity. The full electrolyzer assembled with carbon cloth (CC) of CF-Glu-Mo/CC || CF-Glu-CoFeNi/CC can drive full alkaline water splitting by applying a voltage of 1.65 V at a catalytic current of 10 mA cm −2 for 24 h. Meanwhile, this work provides a feasible approach for the development of efficient water splitting electrocatalysts through the rational design and regulation of heterogeneous interfaces and nanostructures.

In this work, we successfully prepared composites of carbon-modified in-phase MoC–Mo2C (MoC–Mo2C@C, MMC) nanosheets with Cd0.5Zn0.5S (ZCS) nanorods. The loading of MMC nanosheets significantly improved the hydrogen production rate of ZCS nanorods. The results showed that the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of ZCS is the highest when MMC nanosheets are 1 wt% of ZCS nanorods (1-MMC/ZCS), reaching 68.8 mmol h−1 g−1, which is 7.7 times that of pure ZCS nanorods. The 1-MMC/ZCS photocatalyst was measured with Na2S/Na2SO3 as a hole sacrifice reagent under irradiation with 420 nm monochromatic light, and the quantum efficiency of 1-MMC/ZCS was 32.9%. The carbon layer can promote the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons, and in-phase Mo2C–MoC as the active site can synergistically improve the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of ZCS. Most Mo2C-based materials are still used in the field of electrocatalysis. This study provides a new idea for exploring new molybdenum-based co-catalyst materials in the field of visible light catalytic hydrogen production.

Cobalt-modified molybdenum dioxide nanoparticles highly dispersed on nitrogen-doped carbon nanorods (Co–MoO 2 /NCND), are synthesized from anilinium trimolybdate dihydrate nanorods, for the performance improvement of microbial fuel cell based on a mixed bacterial culture . Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the as-synthesized Co–MoO 2 /NCND exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity for the charge transfer on anode, providing the cell with a maximum power density of 2.06 ± 0.05 W m −2 , which is strikingly higher than the bare carbon felt anode (0.49 ± 0.04 W m −2 ). The excellent performance of Co–MoO 2 /NCND is ascribed to the increased electronic conductivity of carbon nanorods by N-doping, the high ability of MoO 2 to enrich electroactive bacteria, as demonstrated by high-throughput sequencing, and the enhanced activity of MoO 2 by Co-modifying toward redox reactions in electroactive bacteria. This report provides a new concept of anode electrocatalyst fabrications for the application of microbial fuel cells in electricity generation and wastewater treatment .

Developing high-performance anode materials is a crucial research target of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Transition metal oxides (TMOs) have attracted great interest as potential anodes, but their applications are still hindered by slow reaction kinetics and large volume changes. Herein, Mo-aniline nanorods (Mo-ANRs) are prepared as precursors by a simple self-polymerized method in acid condition. After the in-situ phase transformation during annealing, multistage composites (N-CNRs@g-MoO 2 ) are formed, with N-doped carbon nanorods (N-CNRs) converted from polymeric aniline ligands, on which granular molybdenum dioxide (g-MoO 2 ) are uniformly precipitated and residual MoO 2 nanodots are remained. As anode materials for SIBs, N-CNRs@g-MoO 2 electrode is benefited from the shortened ion/electron diffusion length caused by steady g-MoO 2 and residual nanodots, and the enhanced electrical conductivity and relieved volume changes introduced by N-CNRs and unique architecture. Thus, N-CNRs@g-MoO 2 electrode delivers high discharge capacity (497.5 mAh g −1 at 0.05 A g −1 ), excellent rate performance and ultra-long cycling stability (165.6 mAh g −1 at 10.0 A g −1 after 12000 cycles), and 122% capacity retention is obtained at 1.0 A g −1 over 500 cycles even after the rate test. The significant enhancements in sodium-ion storage are mainly attributed to the multistage architecture and synergistic advantages among MoO 2 nanodots, N-CNRs and g-MoO 2 . These results indicate that the in-situ phase transformation route has great potential in constructing novel composites with unique architecture for high-performance SIBs.

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) are a promising new energy source. However, the lack of high-performance and low-cost methanol oxidation electrocatalysts hinders their commercial application. Firstly, we successfully prepared NENU-5-derived molybdenum carbide material (Cu-MoC) via a co-precipitation and high-temperature carbonization method using a material composed of a copper-based metal–organic skeleton and a molybdenum-based carbide as the main body. Secondly, PtCu nano-alloy catalysts (Pt/Cu-MoC) were prepared using a unique, spontaneous single replacement reaction after metal–organic skeleton (MOF) carbonization. Through the synergistic effect between Pt and Cu and the strong interaction between Mo2C and PtCu, the electronic structure of the Pt is modified, the energy of the d-band center is reduced, electron exchange is accelerated, and catalytic activity is enhanced. Compared with a commercial Pt/C catalyst in alkaline environments, the Pt0.10/Cu-MoC catalyst has a better MOR catalytic activity (563.25 mA mgPt−1), which is 1.5 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C (376.67 mA mgPt−1). The Pt0.10/Cu-MoC catalyst has an onset potential for CO oxidation that is 16 mV lower than that of commercial Pt/C, indicating better resistance to CO poisoning. Exploring carbon materials derived from MOFs with excellent junction support and using them as carriers to prepare Pt-based catalysts is a practical and feasible approach. It provides a way to develop new Pt-based catalysts that perform efficient MOR.
