Minimizing the use of platinum while maximizing its catalytic activity is attractive but challenging in the development of industrially important platinum catalysts. Herein, using a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheet-supported Pt/Cu cluster catalyst, we report the promotion of the platinum utilization efficiency and catalytic performance for the dehydrogenation of propane. Specifically, as little as 100 ppm platinum exhibits high propane conversion (∼15%) and propylene selectivity (>99%) at a relatively low reaction temperature (520 °C); the formation rate of propylene reaches 7.3 mol molPt−1 s−1, which is about 10 times higher than the best value for the reported Pt/Cu single-atom alloy catalyst. The structural analysis reveals that the abundant fault edges of the h-BN nanosheets and strong bonding of copper with the edge B–O defects maintain the unique geometry of the Pt/Cu cluster, together with the metallic platinum ensemble stabilizing on the top layer of the copper cluster, leading to remarkable improvement in catalytic efficiency. This prominent promotion in catalytic efficiency is also exemplified using other supports including Al2O3, SBA-15 and SiC as counterparts.

Enhancing the limited utilization and overall yield of Pt-based catalysts is essential for advancing proton exchange membrane fuel cell technology. Herein, we report a facile one-pot method that utilizes TEG as both a solvent and a reductant to efficiently synthesize a Pd@Pt core-shell icosahedron. By controlling the surface energy between Pd and Pt precursors, we achieved the formation of Pd@Pt core-shell icosahedra, resulting in a fourfold reduction in reaction time and an eightfold increase in yield. Moreover, the core-shell structures exhibited a significant enhancement in electrocatalytic activity, stability, and Pt utilization efficiency. In comparison to commercial Pt/C, the Pd@Pt core-shell icosahedron exhibited efficient mass activity (MA, 1.54 A mg−1Pt) and specific activity (SA, 2.24 mA cm−2Pt) at 0.9 V (vs. RHE), while demonstrating excellent stability with minimal loss of activity even after 10,000 potential cycles. The Pd@Pt icosahedra configuration integrates the advantages of multiply twinned nanostructures, leading to rich electrochemical active surface sites and fast charge transport, thereby improving its catalytic performance and long-term stability during electrocatalytic reactions.

High-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) exhibit strong tolerance to impurities in hydrogen, which enhances their potential for practical applications. However, the efficiency of gas, proton, and electron electrocatalytic interfaces remains suboptimal, leading to sluggish cathode reaction kinetics and significantly reducing platinum (Pt) utilization. In this study, quaternary ammonium-functionalized polybenzimidazole (QAPBI), where the quaternary ammonium groups form strong ion pair interactions with phosphate, is employed as a bifunctional ionomer in the cathode catalyst layer (CL). This modification facilitates the regulation of phosphate (PA) distribution within the cathode CL and simultaneously improves proton conduction efficiency. Consequently, well-structured three-phase interfaces are effectively established, and the adsorption of PA onto the catalyst surface is minimized, further enhancing Pt utilization. More importantly, the rapid adsorption of PA onto QAPBI reduces the migration and loss of PA during fuel cell operation, thereby enhancing long-term durability. As a result, the peak power density (PPD) of the QAPBI-based HT-PEMFC is increased by 42 % compared to conventional PTFE-based designs, with a corresponding improvement in durability of 37.5 %.

The design of Pt-based nanoarchitectures with controllable compositions and morphologies is necessary to enhance their electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we report a rational design and synthesis of anisotropic mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt 3 Ni core-shell framework nanowires for high-efficient electrocatalysis. The catalyst has a uniform core-shell structure with an ultrathin atomic-jagged Pt nanowire core and a mesoporous Pt-skin Pt 3 Ni framework shell, possessing high electrocatalytic activity, stability and Pt utilisation efficiency. For the oxygen reduction reaction, the anisotropic mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt 3 Ni core-shell framework nanowires demonstrated exceptional mass and specific activities of 6.69 A/mg pt and 8.42 mA/cm 2 (at 0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode), and the catalyst exhibited high stability with negligible activity decay after 50,000 cycles. The mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt 3 Ni core-shell framework nanowire configuration combines the advantages of three-dimensional open mesopore molecular accessibility and compressive Pt-skin surface strains, which results in more catalytically active sites and weakened chemisorption of oxygenated species, thus boosting its catalytic activity and stability towards electrocatalysis.

Improving the utilization of platinum in proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is critical to reducing their cost. In the past decade, numerous Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction catalysts with high specific and mass activities have been developed. However, the high activities are mostly achieved in rotating disk electrode (RDE) measurement and have rarely been accomplished at the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) level. The failure of these direct translations from RDE to MEA has been well documented with several key reasons having been previously identified. One of them is the resistance caused by complex mass transport pathways in the MEA. Herein, we improve the proton and oxygen transportations in the MEA by building a thin and uniform distribution of ionomer on the catalyst surface. As a result, a PEM fuel cell design is capable of showing a current density improvement of 38% at the same voltage (0.6 V) under the H2/air operation.

A key challenge for direct methanol fuel cells is the sluggish reaction kinetics, poor anti-CO poisoning ability, and insufficient Pt utilization of platinum-based catalysts during methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Herein, we report a facile approach for PtCuNi electrocatalysts with adjustable inner and surface configurations. By judiciously controlling the nucleation/growth kinetics, PtCuNi core–shell alloy nanoparticles (PtCuNi-CS NPs) fortified with a Cu-rich core and a Pt-rich shell are obtained. Especially, PtCuNi-CS NPs show the highest mass activity and specific activity toward MOR, 5.7 and 5.1 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the PtCuNi-CS NPs with a suitable d-band center possess excellent electro-oxidation activity. Additionally, the doping of Cu and Ni atoms endows the PtCuNi-CS NPs with enhanced OH* adsorption. This work provides an effective design strategy to develop Pt-based trimetallic electrocatalysts as efficient anode materials for fuel cell applications.

Design and synthesis of platinum catalysts within atomic level are of great significance for the practical application of fuel cells. We found that the ultrathin Co(OH) 2 nanoparticles can be converted into Co 3 O 4 –Co core-shell nanostructures through a thermal annealing process in reducing atmosphere, which are uniformly distributed on the surface of 3D graphene (3DG). The Co 3 O 4 –Co core-shell nanoparticles have been successfully transformed into Co 3 O 4 –Pt core-shell nanoparticles via a controlled replacement reaction. The Co 3 O 4 –Pt @3DG contains only a few atomic layers of Pt shell, and presents a high Pt utilization nanostructure. Besides, the 3D graphene serves as a catalysts carrier with open structure, and offers a three-dimensional molecular accessibility and conducive to mass transfer. Significantly, the optimized mass activity and specific activity of 1.018 A/mg Pt and 2.17 mA/cm 2 have been achieved on Co 3 O 4 –Pt @3DG at 0.9 V vs RHE , which are 7.6- and 8.1- times higher than those of Pt/C (0.134 A/mg Pt and 0.266 mA/cm 2 ), respectively. The high activity is mainly attributed to the ultrathin core-shell structure with an ultrahigh Pt utilization, and the interaction between the near-surface Co 3 O 4 and the surface Pt shell with a tensile strain to surface Pt shell, and the electrons transfer from Co to Pt.
