Preparation and characterization of optimized Ce and CTAB co-doped Blue-TiO2/PbO2 stable anode for phenol degradation

Ruizhi Feng,Ying Zhang,Caigan Yan,Haihe Xiao,Xiaobiao Zhu,Xiaohui Wang

Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) has attracted wide attention to researchers on all walks of life for the treatment of stubborn pollutants because of the strong oxidizing properties. However, the electrode materials currently developed have problems such as short life and low catalytic activity. In this work, the modification of PbO 2 electrode was started by introducing into blue nanotubes (Blue-TiO 2 -NTs) based on the titanium plate to enhance the conductivity of the electrode. Then the β-PbO 2 active layer was optimized by using cerium (Ce) and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) through the method of electrodeposition to improve the electrocatalytic oxidation and stability. In the experiment of electrochemical oxidation, the degradation efficiency of phenol (100 mg/L) reached more than 96% after 120 min on the Blue-TiO 2 /PbO 2 -Ce-CTAB electrode. To further investigate the optimization mechanism of the Blue-TiO 2 /PbO 2 -Ce-CTAB anode in the electrocatalytic oxidation process, the surface structure, morphology, volt-ampere charge, oxygen evolution potential, and charge transfer resistance were evaluated. The result showed that the addition of CTAB reduced the crystal particles of PbO 2 , higher specific surface area of the electrode longitudinally by the Ce element, lower oxygen evolution potential, and smaller the resistance of charge transfer. Finally, the service life of the electrode was 6792 h by the accelerated life test on the current density of 25 mA cm −2 . The energy consumption after 240 min of degradation was 0.079 kWh gCOD −1 .This research proves that the Blue-TiO 2 /PbO 2 -Ce-CTAB electrode has potential application value in the degradation of phenol wastewater.

Electrochemical properties of yttrium on W and Pb electrodes in LiCl–KCl eutectic melts

Wei Han,Wenlong Li,Jiazhuang Chen,Mei Li,Zhuyao Li,Yongchang Dong,Milin Zhang

Cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, linear polarization, chronopotentiometry and chronoamperometry were performed to investigate the electrochemical properties of Y(III) on W and Pb electrodes in LiCl–KCl eutectic melts. The diffusion coefficient of Y(III) measured by various techniques was in the order of 10−5. The nucleation of Y on W electrode was found to comply with the instantaneous nucleation mechanism. With increasing temperature, the exchange current densities increased and the charge-transfer resistances decreased, and exchange current densities are distinctly larger on liquid Pb electrode compared with W electrode. In addition, the co-deposition mechanism of Y(III) and Pb(II) on W electrode was also studied and four Pb–Y intermetallics could be detected. The feasibility of extraction metallic Y from the melts was explored by co-deposition on W electrode and under-potential deposition on liquid Pb electrode and the extracted products consisted of Pb3Y and Pb phases.

Depolarization enhanced deposition of titanium based on liquid cathodes

Shijie Li,Qi Wang,Yao Chang,Zhenghao Pu,Yi Lu,Yiwa Luo,Zhe Wang,Wei-Li Song,Wei Wang,Shuqiang Jiao,Dongbai Sun

The molten salt electrolysis method has garnered significant attention for titanium extraction. However, the multi-step reduction and disproportionation reactions of titanium ions severely impact the current efficiency of this process. This study investigated the cathodic behavior of titanium ions on liquid lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) electrodes in fluoride melts using first-principles calculations and electrochemical analysis. The structure of titanium species in the melt and the reduction mechanism of titanium ions on solid molybdenum (Mo), liquid Zn, and Pb electrodes were elucidated through high-temperature in-situ Raman spectroscopy and experimental analysis. Numerical simulations were employed to analyze the electrolysis process, yielding optimal electrolysis parameters such as current density and overpotential. Electrolysis products were examined through experimental electrolysis and X-ray computer microtomography (x-ray μ-CT) reconstruction, validating the numerical simulation results and confirming the optimal electrolysis parameters. These findings provide valuable insights for enhancing the scalability of the molten salt electrolysis method for titanium extraction and purification.

B4C/Ce co-modified Ti/PbO2 dimensionally stable anode: Facile one-step electrodeposition preparation and highly efficient electrocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Zeyi Wang,Rong Su,Maojie Zhao,Luyao Zhang,Lu Yang,Feng Xiao,Weishan Tang,Lichuan Chen,Ping He,Dingming Yang

The application of PbO 2 for electrochemical oxidation technology is limited by its low electrocatalytic activity and short service life. Herein, based on the facile one-step electrodeposition , we prepared a boron carbide (B 4 C) and cerium (Ce) co-modified Ti/PbO 2 (Ti/PbO 2 –B 4 C–Ce) electrode to overcome these shortcomings. Compared with Ti/PbO 2 electrode, the denser surface is displayed by Ti/PbO 2 –B 4 C–Ce electrode. Meanwhile, electrochemical characterization indicates that the introduction of B 4 C and Ce significantly enhance the electrochemical performance of PbO 2 electrode. In degradation experiments, under optimized conditions (current density 20 mA cm −2 , pH 9, 0.15 M Na 2 SO 4 and 30 °C), the fully degradation of tetracycline (TC) can be completed within 30 min. Furthermore, the trapping experiment demonstrates that ∙OH and SO 4 ·- radicals have a synergistic effect in the degradation process of TC. Based on results of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer, the generated ·OH preferentially attacks amides, phenols and conjugated double bond groups in TC. Importantly, Ti/PbO 2 –B 4 C–Ce electrode maintains a constant degradation efficiency even after 10 recycling tests, and its service life is 2.4 times of traditional Ti/PbO 2 electrode. Hence, Ti/PbO 2 –B 4 C–Ce electrode is a promising electrode for degradation of organic wastewater containing amides, phenols, and conjugated double bond groups.

Enhancement of the electrocatalytic oxidation of antibiotic wastewater over the conductive black carbon-PbO2 electrode prepared using novel green approach

Wang Xiangyu,Xie Yu,Yang Guizhen,Hao Jiming,Ma Jun,Ning Ping

The secondary pollution caused by modification of an electrode due to doping of harmful materials has long been a big concern. In this study, an environmentally friendly material, conductive carbon black, was adopted for modification of lead dioxide electrode (PbO 2 ). It was observed that the as-prepared conductive carbon black modified electrode (C-PbO 2 ) exhibited an enhanced electrocatalytical performance and more stable structure than a pristine PbO 2 electrode, and the removal efficiency of metronidazole (MNZ) and COD by a 1.0% C-PbO 2 electrode at optimal conditions was increased by 24.66% and 7.01%, respectively. Results revealed that the electrochemical degradation of MNZ wastewater followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. This intimates that the presence of conductive carbon black could improve the current efficiency, promote the generation of hydroxyl radicals, and accelerate the removal of MNZ through oxidation. In addition, MNZ degradation pathways through a C-PbO 2 electrode were proposed based on the identified intermediates. To promote the electrode to treat antibiotic wastewater, optimal experimental conditions were predicted through the Box-Behnken design (BBD) method. The results of this study suggest that a C-PbO 2 electrode may represent a promising functional material to pretreat antibiotic wastewaters.

Electrochemical oxidation of pyrrole, pyrazole and tetrazole using a TiO2 nanotubes based SnO2-Sb/3D highly ordered macro-porous PbO2 electrode

Xiezhen Zhou,Siqi Liu,Hongxia Yu,Anlin Xu,Jiansheng Li,Xiuyun Sun,Jinyou Shen,Weqing Han,Lianjun Wang

A highly ordered three-dimensional macro-porous PbO 2 (3D porous PbO 2 ) electrode has been prepared for electrochemical oxidation of nitrogen-heterocyclic compounds. The 3D porous PbO 2 electrode was fabricated by templated electrochemical deposition method with TiO 2 nanotube arrays as substrate and SnO 2 -Sb as intermediate layer. The morphology and composition characterization of the 3D porous PbO 2 electrode was performed by field emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, which revealed a uniform distribution of highly ordered macro-porous β-PbO 2 structure. The Brunner−Emmet−Teller analysis suggested the electrode possessed large specific surface area of 37.39 m 2 ·g −1 . Electrochemical measurements indicated the electrode had a favourable oxygen evolution potential of 1.89 V and inner voltammetric charge of 14.48 mC·cm −2 , which were higher than that of conventional PbO 2 electrode. Furthermore, the electrochemical oxidation and TOC removal percentage of pyrrole , pyrazole and tetrazole obtained by 3D porous PbO 2 electrode were 93.4%, 72.7%, 61.2% and 66.7%, 57.3%, 38.6% respectively, which were also superior to conventional PbO 2 electrode. The intermediates were detected and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometer, and ion chromatography to propose a degradation pathway of pyrrole, pyrazole and tetrazole. Finally, quantum chemical calculation was introduced in this study by density function theory method, which is consistent with the experimental detection.

Electrocatalytic Degradation of Acyclovir by Three-Dimensional Porous Lead Dioxide Anodes: Condition Optimization, Kinetic Analysis and Degradation Mechanisms

Lanlan Wei,Lin Wang,Lu Chen,Yifan Ru,Lianzhong Shen,Yu Ye,Zhouwei Li,Qizhou Dai

A three-dimensional porous lead dioxide electrode (3D-PbO2) was developed by the template electrodeposition approach. Polystyrene microspheres were prepared by microemulsion polymerization, and then the polystyrene template was loaded on the PbO2 electrode by electrodeposition. Finally, a porous structure was formed by removing the template. Under these optimized conditions, the degradation of acyclovir could achieve complete removal, while the removal of COD was 29.59%. The electrochemical degradation process of acyclovir was consistent with the proposed primary reaction kinetics. The 3D-PbO2 electrode was comprehensively characterized using SEM, XRD, and XPS techniques. The SEM analysis revealed the presence of well-defined porous structures on the electrode surface, while the XRD results indicated a reduction in electrode crystal sizes. Additionally, the XPS analysis demonstrated a higher proportion of reactive oxygen species on the 3D-PbO2 electrode. The electrochemical properties of the electrode were investigated using CV and EIS. The experimental findings demonstrate that the 3D-PbO2 electrode exhibits a higher oxygen evolution potential and lower charge transfer resistance than the conventional PbO2 electrode. This study presents a viable approach to enhance the electrochemical oxidation performance of lead dioxide.

PANI/GO and Sm co-modified Ti/PbO2 dimensionally stable anode for highly efficient amoxicillin degradation: Performance assessment, impact parameters and degradation mechanism

Zeyi Wang,Luyao Zhang,Rong Su,Lu Yang,Feng Xiao,Lichuan Chen,Ping He,Dingming Yang,Yali Zeng,Yun Zhou,Ying Wan,Bin Tang

The abuse and uncontrolled discharge of antibiotics present a severe threat to environment and human health, necessitating the development of efficient and sustainable treatment technology. In this work, we employ a facile one-step electrodeposition method to prepare polyaniline/graphite oxide (PANI/GO) and samarium (Sm) co-modified Ti/PbO 2 (Ti/PbO 2 -PANI/GO-Sm) electrode for the degradation of amoxicillin (AMX). Compared with traditional Ti/PbO 2 electrode, Ti/PbO 2 -PANI/GO-Sm electrode exhibits more excellent oxygen evolution potential (2.63 V) and longer service life (56 h). In degradation experiment, under optimized conditions (50 mg L −1 AMX, 20 mA cm −2 , pH 3, 0.050 M Na 2 SO 4 , 25 °C), Ti/PbO 2 -PANI/GO-Sm electrode achieves remarkable removal efficiencies of 88.76% for AMX and 79.92% for chemical oxygen demand at 90 min. In addition, trapping experiment confirms that ·OH plays a major role in the degradation process. Based on theoretical calculation and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer results, the heterocyclic portion of AMX molecule is more susceptible to ·OH attacks. Thus, this novel electrode offers a sustainable and efficient solution to address environmental challenges posed by antibiotic-contaminated wastewater.

Electrochemical degradation of hydrolyzed polyacrylamide by a novel La-In co-doped PbO2 electrode: Electrode characterization, influencing factors and degradation pathway

Dongyue Feng,Zhijie Shang,Pan Xu,Haoyu Yue,Xinxue Li

The anode materials play a key role in the electrochemical oxidation process. In this work, a new type of Ti/Sn-SbO x /α-PbO 2 /La-In-β-PbO 2 electrode has been prepared through electrodeposition and applied to the degradation of high concentration aqueous solution of hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were employed to characterize the surface morphological and structural properties of the electrodes, which indicated that the La-In-PbO 2 electrode had smaller grain size, denser surface and larger active surface area compared with undoped and single-doped PbO 2 electrode. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were also utilized to investigate the electrochemical performance of electrodes. The results showed that the La-In-PbO 2 electrode exhibited higher oxidation peak current, oxygen evolution potential (2.22 V) and lower charge transfer resistance. The La-In-PbO 2 electrodes were used as anode to degrade HPAM solution under different conditions. The results revealed that the viscosity reduction rate of HPAM reached to 97.63 % after 60 min under the condition of electrolyte concentration, initial concentration of HPAM, initial pH and current density were 0.05 M, 3 g·L −1 , 7 and 20 mA·cm −2 , respectively. The kinetic behavior of HPAM degradation was analyzed by the viscosity reduction experiment. The intermediates in the electrochemical oxidation process were identified by GC–MS and the possible degradation mechanism of HPAM was explored by UV–visible absorption spectra and the Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectra.

Electrochemical separation of fission element samarium on lead electrodes from KCl–LiCl molten salts and the kinetic research of the process

Wang Zhaoyang,Shen Yubo,Zhang Yinshan,Liu Yuhui,Dong Zhimin,Quan Meiyang,Yu Fengtao,Cao Xiaohong,Zhang Zhibin,Wang Yingcai,Liu Yunhai

In order to improve the utilization of spent fuel, electrolysis is used to recover fissile elements from nuclear waste samarium. The electrochemical behaviors of Sm(III) and Pb(II) were examined by CV, SWV, and OCP techniques in LiCl–KCl molten salts at 773 K. The redox mechanism of Sm(III) ions on the liquid Pb thin film electrode was analyzed. The results demonstrate that Sm(III) electro-reduction at the inert W electrode only occurred in a soluble–soluble electrochemical transition Sm(III)/Sm(II). Additionally, the kinetic parameters of samarium and lead ions were computed. The activation energies of diffusion for Sm(III) and Pb(II) were 32.92 kJ mol −1 and 35.21 kJ mol −1 , respectively. SmPb 3 and Sm 2 Pb intermetallic compounds were derived using constant potential electrolysis and constant current electrolysis at the Pb electrode in a molten salt system. The cathodic deposition output was characterized by XRD and SEM–EDS. The ICP-AES results showed that the average extraction ratio of Sm on the Pb electrode was about 94.23%.
