Kinetic and thermodynamic study of Lu on W and Zn electrodes and its electrochemical extraction

Quanzhang Sun,Ming Gong,Ji Wang,Lifeng Chen,Wenlong Li,Yuezhou Wei

ABSRACT To extract lutetium (Lu) from LiCl-KCl fused salt, the electrode reaction mechanisms of Lu on W and liquid Zn electrodes were systematically investigated using a series of electrochemical methods such as cycle voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV), reverse chronopotentiometry (RCP), etc. The diffusion coefficient and diffusion activation energy of Lu(III) in LiCl-KCl fused salt were measured by CV. The results of CV, SWV and open circuit chronopotentiometry (OCP) confirmed that seven Lu-Zn intermetallic compounds were formed when Lu was deposited on Zn film electrode. Kinetic data of Lu(III)/Lu on W and liquid Zn electrodes, i.e., exchange current density, charge transfer resistance and reaction activation energy, were determined and compared by linear polarization (LP) at 773-848 K. Furthermore, the thermodynamic date such as equilibrium potential and formation Gibbs free energy of Lu-Zn alloys were also calculated and analyzed according to the OCP. The results demonstrate that the liquid Zn electrode is conducive to extract Lu from LiCl-KCl fused salt. Thus, constant potential electrolysis (CPE) was conducted at -1.58 V for 9 h on liquid Zn cathode to extract Lu from fused salt. The electrolytic product was composed of Zn and LuZn12 phases checked by XRD and SEM-EDS. The extraction rate of Lu is reached up to 98.37% based on the concentration change of Lu(III) in fused salt, which confirmed the feasibility to extract Lu employing liquid Zn electrode.

Lubin Sun,Fangxia Zhao,Yuxin Da,Zhenzhong Zhang,Peng Wang

Submicron spherical zinc powders with high surface area, activity and low cost were prepared by DC arc plasma evaporation method. Based on the characterization of morphology, particle size and composition of ultrafine zinc powder, the effects of addition amount of PTFE and compounding of PTFE with PAAs and CMCs, electrolyte addition amount, compound mass ratio of flake and spherical zinc powder on the discharge performance of zinc electrode had been systematically studied. The results showed that ultrafine zinc powder was polycrystalline, spherical and its purity reached 99.96wt%. Under 0.2C, the discharge capacity reached 577.5mAh when addition of PTFE was 10wt.%. When 2.5wt.% PTFE was compound with 6.5wt.%(PAAs: CMCs = 2:1), the discharge capacity improved which reached 613.4 mAh. The discharge capacity was 580.3mAh when the electrolyte content was 38wt.%. When the mass ratio of special flake zinc powder to spherical zinc powder was 3:7, the discharge capacity reached 664.1 mAh, it was 13.5% higher than 584.9 mAh of pure spherical zinc powder and 22.6% higher than 541.5 mAh of pure flake zinc powder. Under 1.8C, compared with alkaline manganese battery prepared using flake zinc powders, the mass specific capacity increased by 57.12% and the volume specific capacity increased by 187.79%.

Effects of Carboxylates on the Performance of Zn Electrode

Yongli Li,Zhuan Hu,Jinqing Kan

Zinc is widely used as a negative electrode material for batteries due to its excellent electrochemical properties. Zinc is prone to corrosion and the formation of zinc dendrites cause short circuits of the battery, which leads to reduced battery capacity and shortens the battery’s life, hindering its use in weak acidic electrolytes (for example, aqueous Zn-polyaniline batteries). The effects of carboxylates (sodium formate, sodium acetate, sodium propionate, sodium butyrate, sodium valerate, disodium malonate, and disodium succinate) and their concentrations on zinc electrode performance were studied with electrochemical methods to improve the zinc electrode activity for long-life Zn-polyaniline batteries. It was found that the ability of inhibiting corrosion of the zinc electrode is better in the aqueous electrolyte containing 0.2 M disodium malonate. The charge/discharge performance of a Zn-polyaniline battery electrodeposited with polyaniline on a carbon substrate is carried out in the aqueous electrolyte. the results show that the initial discharge specific capacity of the polyaniline in the Zn-polyaniline battery is as high as 131.1 mAh·g−1, and maintains a discharge specific capacity of 114.8 mAh·g−1and a coulombic efficiency over 92% after 100 cycles at a charge/discharge current density of 1 A·g−1in the voltage range of 1.5–0.7 V.

Alkaline zinc-based flow battery: chemical stability, morphological evolution, and performance of zinc electrode with ionic liquid

Mao Tianyong,Dai Jing,Xin Meiqing,Zeng Deliang,Xie Zhipeng

Zinc-based flow battery is an energy storage technology with good application prospects because of its advantages of abundant raw materials, low cost, and environmental friendliness. The chemical stability of zinc electrodes exposed to electrolyte is a very important issue for zinc-based batteries. This paper reports on details of chemical stability of the zinc metal exposed to a series of solutions, as well as the relationship between the morphological evolution of zinc electrodes and their properties in an alkaline medium. Chemical corrosion of zinc electrodes by the electrolyte will change their surface morphology. However, we observed that chemical corrosion is not the main contributor to the evolution of zinc electrode surface morphology, but the main contributor is the Zn/Zn 2+ electrode process. The morphological evolution of zinc electrodes was controlled by using ionic liquids, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIA), and 1-propylsulfonic-3-methylimidazolium tosylate (PSMIT), and the electrode performance was recorded during the morphological evolution process. It was observed that the reversible change of zinc electrode morphology was accompanied by better electrode performance.

An effective phosphate ester-containing organic additive for the alkaline Zn-MnO2 batteries

Chuanxi Zhao,Baoyuan Li,Kai Chang,Xin Zhang,Heng Xu,Dongyang Qiu,Qin Wang,He Miao

The Zn electrode in the alkaline Zn-MnO 2 batteries is suffered from the self-corrosion and hydrogen evolution, which deteriorates their discharge performance and storage life. To address these issues, this work proposes a low-cost and effective phosphate ester-containing organic additive, coconut oil alkyl alcohol amide phosphate ester (DG6503), for the alkaline electrolyte of the Zn-MnO 2 batteries. The phosphate ester groups in DG6503 can form a complex precipitate coating on the surface of Zn, and efficiently decrease H 2 evolution rate of the Zn electrode by over 90 %. DG6503 also can suppress the formation of nanoneedle ZnO products during the discharge of Zn-MnO 2 batteries. Therefore, the discharge capacities of the alkaline Zn-MnO 2 batteries can be greatly improved under the various discharge conditions before and after long-term storage. Our work provides a promising method for improving the discharge property and storage life of the alkaline Zn-MnO 2 batteries.

Depolarization enhanced deposition of titanium based on liquid cathodes

Shijie Li,Qi Wang,Yao Chang,Zhenghao Pu,Yi Lu,Yiwa Luo,Zhe Wang,Wei-Li Song,Wei Wang,Shuqiang Jiao,Dongbai Sun

The molten salt electrolysis method has garnered significant attention for titanium extraction. However, the multi-step reduction and disproportionation reactions of titanium ions severely impact the current efficiency of this process. This study investigated the cathodic behavior of titanium ions on liquid lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) electrodes in fluoride melts using first-principles calculations and electrochemical analysis. The structure of titanium species in the melt and the reduction mechanism of titanium ions on solid molybdenum (Mo), liquid Zn, and Pb electrodes were elucidated through high-temperature in-situ Raman spectroscopy and experimental analysis. Numerical simulations were employed to analyze the electrolysis process, yielding optimal electrolysis parameters such as current density and overpotential. Electrolysis products were examined through experimental electrolysis and X-ray computer microtomography (x-ray μ-CT) reconstruction, validating the numerical simulation results and confirming the optimal electrolysis parameters. These findings provide valuable insights for enhancing the scalability of the molten salt electrolysis method for titanium extraction and purification.

Robust zincophilic-hydrophobic protection layer induces preferential growth of (0 0 2) crystal plane towards ultra-stable Zn anode

Lei Gou,Kai Liang,Wei Wang,Zheqi Yang,Lin Zhu,Yue Ma,Hui Li,Zizhuo Zhang,Xiao-Yong Fan

The practical deployment of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) in large-scale energy storage applications is hampered by short cycle lifespans and limited zinc utilization due to uncontrollable dendrite growth and water-induced side reactions. Herein, we propose an environmentally friendly electrolyte additive, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), which features dual zincophilic sites and a hydrophobic group, to enhance Zn stability. Theoretical calculations and experimental characterizations demonstrate that AMPS can firmly adsorb onto the Zn (0 0 2) plane through its dual zincophilic sites ( SO 3 H and NH CO), while the C C hydrophobic group orients toward the electrolyte, ultimately forming a stable zincophilic/hydrophobic interface on the Zn electrode in situ. This unique structure not only inhibits water-induced side hydrogen evolution reactions but also induces preferential deposit propagation along the (0 0 2) crystal plane. Benefiting from this synergetic effect, the Zn//Cu asymmetric cell with AMPS electrolyte maintains an ultrahigh average coulombic efficiency of 99.8 % for over 2500 cycles at 2 mA cm −2 , achieving 1 mAh cm −2 . Furthermore, the Zn//MnO 2 full cell shows a high-capacity retention of 67.7 % at 1.8 A g −1 after 1000 cycles, confirming the effectiveness of the AMPS additive in improving the cyclability and performance of AZIBs.

Robust bilayer solid electrolyte interphase for Zn electrode with high utilization and efficiency

Meng Yahan,Wang Mingming,Wang Jiazhi,Huang Xuehai,Zhou Xiang,Sajid Muhammad,Xie Zehui,Luo Ruihao,Zhu Zhengxin,Zhang Zuodong,Khan Nawab Ali,Wang Yu,Li Zhenyu,Chen Wei

Construction of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) of zinc (Zn) electrode is an effective strategy to stabilize Zn electrode/electrolyte interface. However, single-layer SEIs of Zn electrodes undergo rupture and consequent failure during repeated Zn plating/stripping. Here, we propose the construction of a robust bilayer SEI that simultaneously achieves homogeneous Zn 2+ transport and durable mechanical stability for high Zn utilization rate (ZUR) and Coulombic efficiency (CE) of Zn electrode by adding 1,3-Dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone as a representative electrolyte additive. This bilayer SEI on Zn surface consists of a crystalline ZnCO 3 -rich outer layer and an amorphous ZnS-rich inner layer. The ordered outer layer improves the mechanical stability during cycling, and the amorphous inner layer homogenizes Zn 2+ transport for homogeneous, dense Zn deposition. As a result, the bilayer SEI enables reversible Zn plating/stripping for 4800 cycles with an average CE of 99.95% (± 0.06%). Meanwhile, Zn | |Zn symmetric cells show durable lifetime for over 550 h with a high ZUR of 98% under an areal capacity of 28.4 mAh cm −2 . Furthermore, the Zn full cells based on the bilayer SEI functionalized Zn negative electrodes coupled with different positive electrodes all exhibit stable cycling performance under high ZUR.

Revealing the Electrochemistry in a Voltaic Cell by In Situ Electron Microscopy

Hui Li†,Guang Yang†,Jingzhao Chen,Mingyu Li,Yong Su,Qiushi Dai,Hongjun Ye,Baiyu Guo,Lin Geng,Tingting Yang,Jing Wang,Liqiang Zhang,Yongfu Tang,Jianyu Huang

Graphical Voltaic cell : A voltaic cell was assembled in an aberration corrected transmission electron microscope with a Cu cathode, a Zn anode and an ionic liquid-based electrolyte. The detailed electrochemical reaction mechanisms of this battery were revealed at atomic level in real time. The Voltaic Pile, invented by Italian physicist Alessandro Volta in 1799, was the first electrochemical energy storage device created by mankind. It consists of alternatively stacked copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) metal disks separated by brine soaked cloth cardboard as the electrolyte. Although fabricated more than two centuries ago, the electrochemistry of the Voltaic Cell has not been fully understood. Understanding the microscopic working principle of the Voltaic Cell not only has historic meaning but also provides a foundation for modern battery technologies, corrosion science and other electrochemical processes. Herein an in situ microscopic observation of the electrochemical reactions in a Voltaic Cell comprised of a Cu cathode, Zn anode and an ionic liquid-based electrolyte was reported. During discharge, Zn stripping initiated from pits formation at the surface of the Zn anode, which then propagated along the longitudinal direction of the nanorod. Concurrently Cu nanoparticles were electrodeposited on the Cu cathode. Atomic scale imaging revealed the formation of zinc fluoride (ZnF 2 ) solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer of about 2 nm, which grew semicoherently with the Zn anode and dictates the stripping kinetics. Our studies provide not only an in-depth understanding of the electrochemistry of the Voltaic Cell, but also a generic technique for in situ studies of metal plating/stripping and corrosion at nanometer to atomic resolution.

Stabilizing Zinc Electrodes with a Vanillin Additive in Mild Aqueous Electrolytes

Kang Zhao,Fangming Liu,Guilan Fan,Jiuding Liu,Meng Yu,Zhenhua Yan,Ning Zhang,Fangyi Cheng

Metallic zinc (Zn) is an attractive anode material to use for building an aqueous battery but suffers from dendritic growth and water-induced corrosion. Herein, we report the use of vanillin as a bifunctional additive in aqueous electrolyte to stabilize the Zn electrochemistry. Computational, spectroscopic, and electrochemical studies suggest that vanillin molecules preferentially absorb in parallel on the Zn surface to homogenize the Zn2+ plating and favorably coordinate with Zn2+ to weaken the solvation interaction between H2O and Zn2+, resulting in a compact, dendrite-free Zn deposition and a stable electrode–electrolyte interface with suppressed hydrogen evolution and hydroxide sulfate formation. In the formulated 2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte with 5 mM vanillin, the Zn anode sustains high areal capacity (10 mAh cm–2 at 1 mA cm–2) and remarkable cycling stability (1 mAh cm–2 for 1000 h) in a Zn|Zn cell and high average Coulombic efficiency (99.8%) in a Zn|Cu cell, significantly outperforming the cells without vanillin. Furthermore, the vanillin additive supports stable operation of full Zn|V2O5 batteries and is readily generalized to a Zn(CF3SO3)2-based electrolyte. This work offers a facile and cost-effective strategy of electrolyte design to enable high-performance aqueous Zn batteries.

A novel Sb-Zn electrode with ingenious discharge mechanism towards high-energy-density and kinetically accelerated liquid metal battery

Hongliang Xie,Peng Chu,Min-an Yang,Zehao Li,Changkun Cai,Yipeng Liu,Jie Wang,Zhaoming Fu,Zhansheng Lu,Zhihong Du,Hailei Zhao

Liquid metal battery (LMB) has recently captured intensive attention for large-scale energy storage, originating from its attractive cost-efficiency, robust cyclability, and ultralong service lifetime. Nevertheless, realizing high energy density remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel dual-active Sb-Zn electrode is elaborately designed. A unique lithiation mechanism is demonstrated for the first time in LMB field. A ternary intermetallic compound LiZnSb is preferentially formed with a high discharge plateau at ca. 1.1 V, which is followed by a conversion reaction to Li 3 Sb and Zn at around 0.8 V and then a consecutive dissolution reaction of lithium in molten Zn, significantly ameliorating the voltage and capacity properties. Meanwhile, part Zn melts regenerate and disperse among discharge product layer, constructing rapid electron/lithium percolating networks in-situ , which accelerates the electrode reaction kinetics. As a result, the Li||Sb-Zn battery exhibits high average discharge voltage of 0.763 V at 100 mA cm −2 and superior rate performance (0.596 V at 1000 mA cm −2 ). Outstanding energy and power densities (290.6 Wh kg −1 and 239.66 W kg −1 ) are achieved, remarkably surpassing most reported LMBs and even comparable to Na-S battery. This work showcases an innovative electrochemistry system, opening a new avenue for high-performance LMBs.

Highly reversible Zn electrodeposition enabled by glutathione-protected copper nanoclusters for aqueous Zn-ion batteries

Lu-Fan Wang,Xiao-Yuan Wang,Shu Xu,Zhou Wu,Guoqiang Sun,Xiao-Fei Liu,Ren-Wu Huang,Shuang-Quan Zang

Dendrite growth and side reactions occurring in Zn anodes hinder the development and practical application of aqueous Zn-ion batteries. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrated the use of ligand-protected Cu nanoclusters as Zn plating/stripping mediators to construct dendrite-free Zn anodes. The abundant polar functional groups (–COOH, –NH2, and –CO–NH–) on the peripheral ligands modulated the solvation structure and regulated the transport of Zn2+, whereas the zincophilic Cu cores functioned as nucleating agents to guide the uniform nucleation and plating of Zn. Using such bifunctional CuNCs, the asymmetric cell achieves a coulombic efficiency of 99.40% for over 1000 cycles, and the symmetric cell exhibits low voltage hysteresis and superior cycling over 400 h with a high depth of discharge of 40%. These findings may contribute to the design of multifunctional mediators at the atomic level.
