The lattice distortion resulting from the Jahn–Teller effect (JTE) at the Mn redox center typically induces irreversible phase transitions and structural degradation, which in turn diminishes the reversible capacity and long-term cycling performance. Here, N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CDs) grafted to the surface of 3 × 3 tunnel todorokite-type MnO 2 (TMO) nanosheet (abbreviated to TMO@N-CDs) are designed. The adsorption of N-CDs promoted the charge transfer and redistribution between Mn and O and promoted the closer electron cloud overlap between Mn and O, thus enhancing the bonding strength of Mn–O bonds, stabilizing the lattice structure, inhibiting JTE, and realizing reversible H + /Zn 2+ storage. Meanwhile, a significant amount of N-CDs can increase active sites of TMO nanosheet, enhance the binding ability with metal ions, and accelerate the ion diffusion kinetics, thus realizing stable electrochemical performances. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation shows that there is obvious orbital overlap between Mn and O in [MnO6] octahedron, which further quantifies the strong interaction between Mn and O through interphase synergy between N-CDs and TMO. The reversible (de)insertion behavior dominated by H + during charging and discharging was proved by operando XRD and ex-situ SEM. As expected, the obtained TMO@N-CDs cathode exhibits remarkable electrochemical properties in terms of high reversible capacity, good rate performance, and satisfactory cycling stability (after 1000 cycles, the specific capacity remains 96.02%).

Rechargeable Zn-MnO 2 batteries are boosted by the reversible intercalation reactions in mild aqueous electrolytes, but they still suffer from cathode degradation. Herein, Zn-MnO 2 batteries with high durability and high energy density are achieved by supplementing MnO 2 deposition and dissolution in a mild aqueous electrolyte. The main finding is that adjusting Mn 2+ concentration to a critical range enables a reversible MnO 2 /Mn 2+ redox conversion without the involvement of oxygen evolution. This can recycle the by-products from MnOOH disproportionation (MnOOH → MnO 2 + Mn 2+ ), resulting in a battery with extremely high durability (16 000 cycles without obvious capacity fading), high energy density (602 Wh kg −1 based on the active mass of the cathode), and high-rate capacity (430 mAh g −1 at 19.5 A g −1 ). The utilization of a 3D carbon nanotube foam skeleton can accommodate the volume change during MnO 2 deposition/dissolution and provide paths for efficient charge and mass transport. This work provides a feasible way to push the development of Zn-MnO 2 batteries in mild aqueous electrolytes.

Alkaline Zn–MnO2 batteries feature high security, low cost, and environmental friendliness while suffering from severe electrochemical irreversibility for both the Zn anode and MnO2 cathode. Although neutral electrolytes are supposed to improve the reversibility of the Zn anode, the MnO2 cathode indeed experiences a capacity degradation caused by the Jahn–Teller effect of the Mn3+ ion, thus shortening the lifespan of the neutral Zn–MnO2 batteries. Theoretically, the MnO2 cathode undergoes a highly reversible two-electron redox reaction of the MnO2/Mn2+ couple in strongly acidic electrolytes. However, acidic electrolytes would inevitably accelerate the corrosion of the Zn anode, making long-lived acidic Zn–MnO2 batteries impossible. Herein, to overcome the challenges faced by Zn–MnO2 batteries, we propose a hybrid Zn–MnO2 battery (HZMB) by coupling the neutral Zn anode with the acidic MnO2 cathode, wherein the neutral anode and acidic cathode are separated by a proton-shuttle-shielding and hydrophobic-ion-conducting membrane. Benefiting from the optimized reaction conditions for both the MnO2 cathode and Zn anode as well as the well-designed membrane, the HZMB exhibits a high working voltage of 2.05 V and a long lifespan of 2275 h (2000 cycles), breaking through the limitations of Zn–MnO2 batteries in terms of voltage and cycle life.

Aqueous rechargeable zinc-manganese batteries (AZMBs) are strong candidates for the next generation of energy storage technologies. However, poor cycling stability has greatly limited the commercialization process of AZMBs. The irreversible dissolution and low utilization of manganese-based cathodes impact cycling stability. Therefore, this work proposes a cathode for electrolytic zinc-manganese battery, where cobalt and nitrogen co-doped porous carbon with catalytic and adsorptive properties is grown on carbon nanotube films (CoNC-CFs). Through a synergistic approach of ion adsorption and catalytic conversion, it significantly enhances the reversible conversion efficiency of Mn 2+ /MnO 2 , leading to long-term cycling stability for AZMBs. This strategy utilizes the catalytic effect of cobalt to promote the uniform deposition of Mn 2+ during the charging process and ensures the efficient dissolution of the deposited material during discharge, thus achieving over 1300 reversible cycles at 1 mA cm −2 in a near-neutral sulfate electrolyte. This method offers new perspectives for the further development and application of AZMBs.

The integration of electrochromic devices and energy storage systems in wearable electronics is highly desirable yet challenging, because self-powered electrochromic devices often require an open system design for continuous replenishment of the strong oxidants to enable the coloring/bleaching processes. A self-powered electrochromic device has been developed with a close configuration by integrating a Zn/MnO 2 ionic battery into the Prussian blue (PB)-based electrochromic system. Zn and MnO 2 electrodes, as dual shared electrodes, the former one can reduce the PB electrode to the Prussian white (PW) electrode and serves as the anode in the battery; the latter electrode can oxidize the PW electrode to its initial state and acts as the cathode in the battery. The bleaching/coloring processes are driven by the gradient potential between Zn/PB and PW/MnO 2 electrodes. The as-prepared Zn||PB||MnO 2 system demonstrates superior electrochromic performance, including excellent optical contrast (80.6%), fast self-bleaching/coloring speed (2.0/3.2 s for bleaching/coloring), and long-term self-powered electrochromic cycles. An air-working Zn||PB||MnO 2 device is also developed with a 70.3% optical contrast, fast switching speed (2.2/4.8 s for bleaching/coloring), and over 80 self-bleaching/coloring cycles. Furthermore, the closed nature enables the fabrication of various flexible electrochromic devices, exhibiting great potentials for the next-generation wearable electrochromic devices.

With the advantages of intrinsic safety, low price, high output potential, and acceptable energy density, aqueous rechargeable Zn–MnO2 batteries are gradually emerging as promising energy storage devices in recent years. Unfortunately, the structural instability and poor electrical conductivity of manganese dioxides still hinder their further applications. To tackle these issues, we demonstrate a high-performance cathode material for Zn–MnO2 batteries by hybridizing lignin-derived porous carbon with δ-MnO2 (denoted as LPC/δ-MnO2). Benefiting from the high electrical conductivity of porous carbon, the LPC/δ-MnO2 cathode material can offer high discharge capacity of 332.3 mAh g–1 at 0.2 A g–1 and excellent high-rate capability (196.1 mAh g–1 at 5 A g–1). Meanwhile, the assembled Zn–MnO2 battery displays good long-term cycling stability (82% capacity retention after 1000 cycles). Such superior performances are attributed to the synergetic effect of nanostructured δ-MnO2 and porous carbon scaffold, which is in favor of rapid Zn2+ ion diffusion and large contribution ratio of pseudocapacitive Zn2+ ion intercalation. The results of this study show great prospects of hybridizing biomass-derived carbon framework with electrochemically active materials toward advanced energy storage materials.

The disproportionation of the Jahn-Teller (J-T) active manganese oxides (Mn 3+ ) often leads to uncontrollable Mn 2+ dissolution, which has been identified as one of the major causes of the performance degradation in conventional Zn-MnO 2 batteries. Herein, we use the “unwanted” disproportionation of the Mn 3+ cations to realize effective MnO 2 /Mn 2+ transformation, achieving high specific capacity (550 mAh g −1 ) and good cycling stability (5000 cycles without capacity decay) in a Zn-MnO 2 hybrid battery with mild aqueous electrolytes. Mechanism study shows that MnO 2 is deposited on the cathode during charging, H + /Zn 2+ insertion and disproportionation occur sequentially during discharging, leading to Mn 2+ dissolution. The generated high-valence manganese oxides via disproportionation further experience reduction-disproportionation-dissolution, which proceeds repeatedly in the expanded discharge potential to 0 V vs. Zn 2+ /Zn, resulting in the complete dissolution of the cathodic materials. Our results provide the fundamental understanding on the controversial mechanisms of Zn-MnO 2 batteries with mild aqueous electrolytes and highlight the effect of disproportionation in pushing the electrochemical performance of the promising Zn-MnO 2 hybrid batteries.

Here, a three-phase decoupled Zn-MnO 2 electrolytic battery is designed. A salt bridge gel as an intermediate is introduced to separate the catholyte and anolyte in this design. This battery behaves a wide electrochemical stability window and a high discharge voltage of 2.5 V with 95 % capacity retention after 350 cycles. The working mechanism has also been discussed in this study via ex-situ analysis.

As one of the most successful aqueous zinc-based batteries, the alkaline Zn-MnO 2 batteries (AZMBs) suffer from the low utilization of MnO 2 . This work proposes a simple approach to address this issue by optimizing the graphite contents and microstructures in the cathode. It is found that the cathode of AZMB containing 9 wt% graphite exhibits the best electrochemical performances, achieving the discharge capacities of 240.6 mAh and 196.25 mAh at 10 and 25 mA, increasing by 7.7 % and 9.0 % compared to that of the commercial AZMBs, respectively. Additionally, by adopting the fully-expanded graphite with large specific surface area and thin thickness, the discharge capacities of AZMB increase by 8.7 % and 8.8 % at 10 and 25 mA, compared to that of the commercial AZMBs, respectively. The improving discharge properties of AZMBs with proper graphite content and microstructure can be ascribed to the high conversion rate of MnO 2 into the discharge product of MnOOH due to the improved conductive network. This work provides a valuable insight for the development of the aqueous Zn-based batteries.

Enhancing the energy density of aqueous rechargeable zinc-based batteries is critical for boosting their application in a variety of practical scenarios. Herein we demonstrate a strategy to improve specific energies of Zn//MnO 2 batteries in mild electrolyte via utilizing three-dimensional (3D) current collectors for both the anode and cathode. By electrodepositing limited amounts of Zn on surface-alloyed Ag mesh and coupling it with MnO 2 cathode electrodeposited on carbon cloth with no binder, the resultant batteries exhibit specific energy up to 253 and 196 Wh/kg (based on total mass of active materials) at negative-to-positive electrode capacity (N/P) ratios of 1:1 and 2:1. By elevating the working temperature to 35 °C, the specific energy and life span of the battery with N/P = 2 can be further increased to 216 Wh/kg and >225 cycles, respectively. The key to achieving a high specific energy relies primarily on the great reversibility of the Zn anode, which is conferred by the 3D Ag mesh.

Practical application of flexible energy storage devices has not been realized despite the booming of experimental researches. One major concern is their poor mechanical durability, which has seldom been investigated in literatures. On one hand, their flexibility is not good enough to accommodate arbitrary deformations, which was merely demonstrated by statically bending at certain angles. Thus, stability against dynamic mechanical stimuli is highly desired. On the other hand, these devices are not strong enough to endure severe mechanical stimuli including large shear forces and impacts, which greatly limits their practicability. Therefore, device-level toughness to ensure long-term usability is also needed. Here, a mechanically durable Zn-MnO 2 battery is developed based on a dual-crosslinked hydrogel electrolyte without the usage of separator. Due to the effective energy dissipation of the hydrogel, the as-fabricated battery maintains a stable energy output when being dynamically deformed under severe mechanical stimuli. It can be vastly deformed into various shapes without electrochemical performance decay, showing excellent flexibility. It also exhibits super toughness that can endure two days' treading pressure and survive 20 times of random run-over by cars on road. These demonstrations reveal its outstanding mechanical stability and durability, suggesting great potential in truly flexible and wearable applications.

Stretchable batteries are indispensable energy storage devices to power emerging wearable electronics in soft form factors. In contrast to commonly employed engineering approaches to mitigate strains through structural design, the intrinsically stretchable devices naturally exhibit skin-like mechanical deformability by using all compliant building components. Currently, the intrinsically stretchable battery often shows a significant trade-off between electrochemical performances and mechanical deformability. Here, we introduce a low-cost and scalable approach to create an intrinsically stretchable aqueous battery featuring the deployment of state-of-art battery materials and binders. The compliant current collector, in the form of a bilayer silver nanowire/carbon nanotube nanocomposites, demonstrates excellent mechanical stretchability and electrochemical stability. The microcracked electrode layer retains stable charge transport and excellent electrochemical activity under large mechanical deformations through firm attachment to the bilayer current collector. A stretchable Zn-MnO 2 cell in a sandwiched configuration is assembled exhibiting high specific capacity (>200 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 ), excellent capacity retention of ∼90% over 100 cycles, large stretchability up to 100% strain, and durability against repetitive mechanical deformations. The practical suitability is demonstrated by a stand-alone electronic system conformably mounted on the wrist, in which an LED array is powered by a pair of stretchable Zn-MnO 2 batteries.
