Adsorption Behaviors of Lanthanum (III) and Yttrium (III) Ions on Gibbsite

Zongke Zhou,Quan Wan,Wenbin Yu,Xin Nie,Shuguang Yang,Shuqin Yang,Zonghua Qin

The enrichment process of rare earth elements in ion-adsorbed rare earth ores and bauxite is potentially related to the adsorption of rare earth elements by gibbsite. In this paper, lanthanum and yttrium were selected as surrogates of light rare earth elements and heavy rare earth elements, respectively. The effects of adsorption time, solution pH, and background electrolyte concentration on the adsorption of rare earth ions by gibbsite were investigated through batch adsorption experiments. The results showed that the adsorption of rare earth ions by gibbsite can approach equilibrium in 72 h. There is mainly electrostatic repulsion between gibbsite and rare earth ions at pH 4–7, and the adsorption efficiency increases with the increase in solution pH value and background electrolyte concentration. The adsorption process of rare earth ions by gibbsite is more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir single-layer adsorption models. Moreover, based on the structural correlation between clay minerals and gibbsite, the causes for the differences in the adsorption behaviors of rare earth elements on the minerals are discussed. The results of this study help to understand the role of aluminum hydroxide in the migration and fate of rare earth elements in epigenetic environments. Keywords:gibbsite;rare earth element;adsorption;kinetics;thermodynamics

Phosphorylated-CNC/MWCNT thin films-toward efficient adsorption of rare earth La(III)

Zhang Yi,Zheng Xudong,Bian Tingting,Zhang Yuzhe,Mei Jinfeng,Li Zhongyu

Abstract The purpose of the paper is to achieve adsorption and secondary application of La(III) through strong coordination ability of phosphate groups and La(III). Firstly, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were phosphorylated in two solvents (water and molten urea). p-CNC(water)/MWCNT and p-CNC(urea)/MWCNT thin films were successfully synthesized by using p-CNCs as film units based on EISA method. The addition of multi-wall carbon nanotube was to improve thermal stability and repeatability of films and carboxyl groups thereon could also involve in the coordination of La(III). Adsorption experiments show that, at pH 4.0, adsorption capacities of p-CNC(water)/MWCNT and p-CNC(urea)/MWCNT films were 21.23 and 44.71 mg g −1 , with half equilibrium time ( t 1/2 ) of 23.06 and 4.87 min. Repeatability tests show that the adsorption capacities of films remained above 82% of the maximum adsorption capacities after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Graphic abstract

Simple preparation of poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) hydrogel for highly efficient removal of La(III) and Ce(III)

Lei Tan,Zengjin Fu,Jing Wang,Wenyue Jiao,Tianwen Huang,Yan Hao,Yicheng Wang,Tingrui Lin

In this paper, poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSS) hydrogel was synthesized following a one-step free-radical polymerization with N, N -methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linker. La(III) and Ce(III) were effectively removed from acidic aqueous solutions by using PSS hydrogel. FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, zeta potential analysis, and XPS were used to characterize the morphology and microstructure of PSS hydrogel. By varying pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial La(III) and Ce(III) ions concentrations, and interfering ions, the adsorption behavior of La(III) and Ce(III) ions on PSS hydrogel was studied. According to the experimental data, PSS hydrogel exhibited adsorption capacities above 200 mg·g −1 for La(III) and 180 mg·g −1 for Ce(III) over a wide pH range. Furthermore, adsorption data was simulated using pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intra-particle diffusion kinetic equations. For the description of adsorption equilibrium, Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isothermal models were used. According to the results, the Langmuir isotherm equation provided the best fit. Based on the Langmuir isotherm equation, the maximum absorption capacities of La(III) and Ce(III) by PSS hydrogel was 241.0 and 223.7 mg·g −1 , respectively. According to FTIR and XPS analysis, sulfonic acid groups were involved in the adsorption of La(III) and Ce(III) ions. And ion exchange and complexation were the main mechanisms involved. Finally, reusability tests reveal that the PSS hydrogel can be reused 13 times without losing effectiveness.

Fabrication of core-shell structured Fe3O4@amide humic acid magnetic nanoparticles and their highly efficient adsorption for La (III)

Saeed Ahmed Memon,Jiaxin Duan,Wenting Li,Yun Wei

The enhancement and removal of rare earth ions from wastewater resources have emerged as a crucial study to ensure the superior quality of rare earth resources application. In this work, amide humic acid-coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@AHA MNPs) were fabricated by chemical coprecipitation hydrothermal technique. The fabricated nanoparticles showed excellent stability in aqueous solutions. They could be easily collected from solutions using a magnetic separation strategy. Adsorption studies were used to investigate the adsorption performance of Fe3O4@AHA MNPs for La (III) under a variety of circumstances. Furthermore, isothermal adsorption lines and kinetic and thermodynamic modeling were used to examine the adsorption mechanism of La (III). Results revealed that Fe3O4@AHA MNPs had a high adsorption capacity of 148.83 mg g−1 and adsorption equilibrium was attained after 45 min when the adsorbent dose was 20 mg at pH 6. Fe3O4@AHA MNPs demonstrated high reusability for La (III), retaining 78.5% of initial adsorption capability after five cycles. Finally, the fabricated Fe3O4@AHA MNPs was successfully employed and applied to remove La (III) from industrial wastewater samples. According to these results, the Fe3O4@AHA MNPs have potential to be a useful material for enrichment and preconcentration of La (III) or other trivalent lanthanides from wastewater.

Removal of La(III) by amino-phosphonic acid functionalized polystyrene microspheres prepared via electron beam irradiation

Tao Chen,Ning Sun,Yuan Zhao,Jie Gao,Guowen Hu,Xiaobing Han,Yayang Tian,Linfeng Chen,Guobao Huang,Bing Li

A new aminophosphonic acid chelating resin was successfully prepared via electron beam irradiation grafting combined with chemical modification and used for the efficient removal of La(III). Firstly, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was grafted to polystyrene microspheres (PS) via electron beam co-radiation to obtain PS-PGMA microspheres, then followed by the amination with diethylenetriamine (DETA) to formed PS-PGMA-DETA (PGD) microspheres through nucleophilic substitution between amino and epoxy group, and finally PS-PGMA-DETA-PA (PGDP) microspheres was obtained by phosphorylation with phosphorous acid (PA). The obtained chelating resin absorbent was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which demonstrated that the millimetric aminophosphonic acid chelating resin were successfully prepared with well-defined morphology and enhanced thermal stability. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization results confirmed a possible adsorption mechanism, which is mainly based on the chelation and coordination of N and O in PDGP with La(III) in the solution. A series of parameters were taken into account in the adsorption experiment, such as absorbed dose, GMA concentration, dosage of PGDP, pH, contact time, temperature, and the initial concentrations of La(III). The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the research can be achieved 288.69 mg/g at 298.15 K, pH = 6. The kinetic sorption for for La(III) fitted the type 1 pseudo-second-order (R 2  = 0.9981), which revealed that the La(III) are chemisorbed on the surface of the PGDP. It was concluded that the La(III) adsorption conformed to the Freundlich equation, indicating a multilayer adsorption process. Thermodynamic data indicated that the La(III) uptake process was a spontaneous and endothermic. In addition, this research provided a new irradiation grafting method for rare earth ions removal.

Zong Youli,Zhang Yongde,Lin Xiaoyan,Ye Dong,Luo Xuegang,Wang Jing

A novel microsphere adsorbent based upon carboxymethyl cellulose sodium/prussian blue composite loaded with Lanthanum(III) (CMC/PB-La) was successfully synthesized via electrostatic ejection device for removal of cesium from contaminated water, and characterized by FT-IR, SEM, EDX and XPS. Influencing factors to adsorption cesium were investigated, including solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial concentration, temperature and competing ions. Linear Freundlich isotherm was fitted satisfactorily to the adsorption data, and the adsorption kinetic data was fitted well with pseudo-second-order model. Moreover, the results of γ-irradiation experiments indicate that CMC/PB-La has good radiation stability.

Silver nanoflowers-enhanced Tb(III)/La(III) co-luminescence for the sensitive detection of dopamine

Sun Chongmei,Shen Jin,Cui Rongwei,Yuan Fangzheng,Zhang Hui,Wu Xia

A sensitive fluorescent analytical method for the detection of dopamine (DA) was developed based on surface-enhanced Tb(III)/La(III) co-luminescence using silver nanoflowers (AgNFs). Anisotropic AgNFs show strong surface-enhanced fluorescence effect owing to the abundant sharp tips. Tb(III)/La(III)-DA complexes mainly bind to the sharp tips of AgNFs and thus shorten the distance between the complexes. The shortened distance gives rise to obvious surface-enhanced Tb(III)/La(III) co-luminescence effect. In this work, AgNFs offer many superior properties, such as enhanced intrinsic green fluorescence of Tb(III) ( λ ex / λ em  = 310/546 nm), increased fluorescence lifetime, and improved energy transfer efficiency. Under the optimum conditions, the fluorescence intensity is linearly correlated with the concentration of DA in the range of 0.80–10 nM ( R 2  = 0.9970), and the detection limit is 0.34 nM ( S/N  = 3). The fluorescent nanoprobe was successfully applied to the determination of DA in human serum samples with recoveries ranging from 99.1 to 102.6%. Graphical abstract

Fabrication of sodium alginate-doped carbon dot composite hydrogel and its application for La (III) adsorption and enhanced the removal of phosphorus

Zhang Xiao,Luo Shiwen,Duan Jiaxin,Lan Tao,Wei Yun

Adsorption is an effective method for the removal of hazardous substances from wastewater. In this work, a low-cost and environmental-friendly composite hydrogel material of sodium alginate doped with nitrogen doped carbon dots (SA@NCDs) was fabricated by impregnation for lanthanide and enhanced phosphorus adsorption in wastewater. The effects of NCDs doping amount, dosage, pH, initial solution concentration, adsorption time and temperature on the process of La (III) adsorption by SA@NCDs were investigated. The adsorption isotherms fitted to Langmuir isotherm model (R 2  = 0.9970–0.9989) and the adsorption kinetics followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R 2  = 0.9992). The maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for La (III) was 217.39 mg/g according to the Langmuir model at 298.15 K. After five cycles, the removal efficiency of La (III) adsorbed by SA@NCDs was still 85.1%. Moreover, the loaded La (III) enhanced the adsorption of phosphorus. The La (III)-SA@NCDs-5 hydrogel adsorbent greatly improved the adsorption capacity for phosphorus compared with the La (III)-free adsorbent, and the adsorption amount can reach 9.64 mg-P/g. The SA@NCDs complex hydrogels for rare earth adsorption were prepared by introducing NCDs rich in amino group into SA hydrogels. The introduction of NCDs increases the adsorption sites of hydrogels, and also overcomes the problem that NCDs itself is difficult to recover in wastewater treatment applications. The lanthanide adsorbed material has a stable structure and can be used to remove phosphorus to deal with waste using the waste. It indicates the SA@NCDs hydrogel composite adsorbent have good potential for wastewater treatment. Graphical Abstract

Enhanced Selective Adsorption of Lanthanum(III) by Dual-Site Polymeric Ion-Imprinted Nanoparticles from Aqueous Media

Yi Zhang,Donghao Liu,Weidong Guo,Yigang Ding

Selective recognition and separation of rare-earth elements (REEs) is considered a real challenge for the RE industry. In this work, two dual-site ion-imprinted polymers (IIP-AM and IIP-MAA) were synthesized via a radical copolymerization method for the removal of La(III) from aqueous solutions. The structures of samples were characterized and confirmed with various kinds of techniques, including IR, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, thermogravimetry analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Adsorption studies reveal that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model were well-fitted with the adsorption of La(III), showing high adsorption capacities of 45.65 and 50.05 mg/g for IIP-AM and IIP-MAA, respectively, after 120 min at pH = 5.5 and 25 °C. Impressively, the fabricated IIPs possess remarkable selectivity between La(III) and other REEs, as well as excellent reusability after five successive adsorption–regeneration cycles with less than 9% reduction of capacities. The adsorption mechanism indicates that the surface complexation and electrostatic attraction contribute to the adsorption of La(III) based on the characterization analysis of XPS, elemental mapping, and energy-dispersive spectrometry, as well as density functional theory calculations. Accordingly, these samples with tailored ion-imprinted cavities and abundant active O sites entirely exhibit the potentials for the selective recovery of REEs from aqueous solutions.

Preparation and characterization of the linked lanthanum carboxymethylcellulose microsphere adsorbent for removal of fluoride from aqueous solutions

Jing Wang,Xiaoyan Lin,Xuegang Luo,Wenhui Yao

Linked carboxymethyl cellulose microspheres loaded with lanthanum(III) (linked-CMC–La) were fabricated with glutaraldehyde, from lanthanum carboxymethyl cellulose microspheres (CMC–La), and used to remove fluoride from aqueous solution. Characterization by SEM, resistance to acid and alkali, TG, pHpzc and FT-IR was used to distinguish the superiority of the two adsorbents. The results showed that the linked-CMC–La had a higher decomposition temperature (200 °C) than CMC–La (190 °C) and a better resistance to acid and alkali compared with CMC–La. Batch adsorption experiments were also performed, varying factors of pH, initial fluoride concentration, and contact time. The results showed that the maximum removal efficiencies (REs) of CMC–La and linked-CMC–La were about 98.85% and 99.31%, respectively, when the fluoride concentration was 40 mg L−1 at pH 4.0. The adsorption process could be described well using the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption kinetics data was fitted well using a pseudo-second-order model. The analysis of the adsorption and desorption of the linked-CMC–La and CMC–La revealed that crosslinking had no obvious effect on the removal efficiency or mechanism of the adsorption and desorption of the two absorbents. The surface adsorption occurred between the linked-CMC–La and fluoride due to Lewis acid–base interaction and supplemented with electrostatic attractions.

Polyaminophosphoric Acid-Modified Ion-Imprinted Chitosan Aerogel with Enhanced Antimicrobial Activity for Selective La(III) Recovery and Oil/Water Separation

Liqiong Wu,Ming Yang,Lifeng Yao,Zhangyang He,Jun-xia Yu,Weiyan Yin,Ru-an Chi

In this study, polyaminophosphoric acid (PA)-functionalized ion-imprinted chitosan (CS) aerogel was fabricated for the first time, exhibiting good antibacterial property for selective La(III) recovery and oil/water separation. The as-prepared PA-CS-IIA-2 shows a remarkable adsorption capacity of 114.6 mg/g toward La(III) and high selectivity in the competitive adsorption systems, which is attributed to its abundant imprinting sites and surface functional groups. Benefiting from the amphiphilic property, the PA-CS-IIA-2 also exhibits an excellent adsorption performance for the extractant, oils, and organic solvents. Besides, the PA-CS-IIA-2 presents excellent regeneration and reusability characteristics. Moreover, compared with CS, the PA-CS-IIA-2 exhibits a significantly improved antibacterial activity originating from the PA component. Most importantly, the PA-CS-IIA-2 aerogel is capable of removing multiple pollutants all together and effectively inhibiting bacteria in the complex wastewater environments. Therefore, this study paves the way for developing high-performance rare-earth capture materials with multiple functions to meet diverse applications.

The indication of double-sensors in living plant cells on the invisible damage of soybean plants under low-dose La(III) exposure

Xin Wang,Yue Ben,Wanxin Liu,Qing Zhou,Lihong Wang,Xiaohua Huang

Rare earth elements (REEs) are a type of frequently reported emerging pollutant that affects plant growth. The harm caused by continuous exposure to low-dose REEs has rarely been studied. Quickly, accurately, and non-invasively monitoring the continuous influence of low-dose REEs on plant growth in situ is key to indicating and warning of its harm to plants and ecosystems. In this study, after continuous exposure to low-dose lanthanum [La(III), a REE] for 14 days, invisible damage occurred in leaf cells, and La accumulated continuously in the soybean plants (leaves > stems > roots > pods > seeds), causing potential human health risks. Two proteins [vitronectin-like protein (VN) and arabinogalactan proteins (AGP)] in leaf cells that bound La(III) were selected as biomarkers, and changes in these two proteins were detected by constructing dual-sensors in living leaf cells after continuous exposure to low-dose La(III) for 14 days. The results showed that the electrochemical outputs from leaf cells–the electron transfer resistance R et (VN) and R et (AGP)–were related to the damage indices such as MDA, chlorophyll content, electrolyte leakage, cell vitality, fresh and dry weight of leaves, and leaf area. Using this output, two warning intervals of visible damage were obtained: R et (VN) was 8.53 %–47.22 %, and R et (AGP) was 12.75 %–51.31 %. This study successfully demonstrated the real-time in situ detection of plant cell biomarker changes and invisible damage under low-dose La(III) exposure, providing methods for early warning monitoring of plant damage caused by low-dose continuous exposure to REEs.
