In an effort to prevent or minimize icing hazards, techniques and materials for icing inhibition and deicing have always been highly favored throughout human history. This work discovers the integrated anti-icing and deicing effects of poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) triblock rubber (SBS) after its easy oxidation in iodine vapor. Iodine oxidation happens on the block of polybutadiene, featured by the conversion of SBS from hydrophobic to amphiphilic and the improved capability of photothermal conversion. The oxidized SBS can serve as a polymer coating, which possesses intriguing abilities to delay the kinetics of icing on its surface and repel the ice under light illumination. According to characterizations of surface chemistry and mechanical performance, iodine oxidation is assumed to involve the processes of iodine coordination to unsaturated bonds, the formation of radical cations as a result of the redox reaction between iodine and unsaturated carbon–carbon bonds, improved light absorption owing to the formation of polyiodide anions, and intermolecular coupling of radical cations. The appearance of polar moieties/species within the oxidized SBS is attributed to the delayed ice nucleation. The significant photothermal capacity in visible and near-infrared windows enables the iodine-oxidized SBS coating to remove the adhered ice by melting under light illumination when the icing process is inevitable, even at an extremely low temperature (−25 °C).

Ice can lead to inconvenience and disasters in human activities, making it a widely concern for researchers to find solutions to prevent icing. Hydrophobic materials have been developed for passive anti-icing with a long time, but without active deicing effect. Recently, researchers have explored hydrophobic photothermal materials with passive anti-icing and active deicing ability, which are limited on cloudy days and the night. Consequently, developing materials with anti-icing/icephobic and deicing capabilities for all-weather use has emerged as an innovative strategy. This paper develops hydrophobic PDMS/Cu-Ni@PET with photo/electric thermal properties to support all-weather anti-icing/icephobic and deicing, which is synthesized using copper-nickel and hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The PDMS/Cu-Ni@PET exhibits an outstanding anti-icing performance with a delayed icing time of 1224 s at -10 °C, and achieves a surface equilibrium temperature of 68.9 °C under 1 sunlight intensity, enabling the melting of surface ice particles within 614 ± 118 s. When a voltage is applied to both sides of the fabric, the equilibrium temperature can be reached within 60 s, and attained 158 °C at 6 V, enabling the melting of surface ice within 97 s. It provides a novel approach for developing photo/electric thermal superhydrophobic coatings that can maintain all-weather deicing performance.

The insufficient density and discontinuity of solar energy of photothermal superhydrophobic flexible film seriously affect the practical application. Light energy harvesting and heat energy storage are effective ways to solve this problem. Inspired by the viscous temperature-regulating material within the inflorescence of Lobelia telekii and the arrangement of bracts on its surface, a flexible film for photoheat storage is proposed that integrated a three-order photoheat trap and one-order heat storage. The surface of the flexible film features microcone array with micro-grooves, modified carbon nanotubes (MCNTs), and layered structures on microcapsules, forming a three-level photoheat trap. The generated heat increases the surface temperature and is partially absorbed by the heat storage material inside the microcapsule . The stable photothermal temperature of polyurethane films with microcone structure (S x ) was elevated by 3–5 °C compared to without it (Flat-S x ), while the stable photothermal temperature of MCNTs-S x (Flat-S x with MCNTs) exceeds that of S x by 2–6 °C. The ice particles on the MCNTs-S 0.45 completely dissolved within 180 s under xenon lamp light source. Meanwhile, MCNTs-S x demonstrated superhydrophobicity and outstanding anti-fouling capabilities. The fabricated MCNTs-S x realized biomimicry of Lobelia telekii in both structure and performance, providing a strategy for biomimetic photothermal de-icing.

The issue of anti-icing and deicing in the low-temperature and high-humidity environment of polar regions has long troubled researchers. The problem cannot be solved perfectly by superhydrophobic coatings alone, and multifunctional composite coatings as well have become a research hotspot. First, hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets were functionalized with polypyrrole (PPy), and then hydrophobic modification was completed by grafting perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FAS) to obtain fluorine-modified polypyrrole-functionalized boron nitride (F-BN@PPy). Finally, a photothermal superhydrophobic coating was successfully prepared by using silicone resin as a binder. The coating exhibited excellent photothermal properties, reaching 80 °C in just 3 min under 1 sun irradiation at 25 °C. This can be attributed to the high photothermal conversion efficiency of PPy and the nanostructure of the coating surface, which enhances sunlight utilization. The coating also demonstrated superior hydrophobic properties, reflected by a contact angle of 162° and a sliding angle of 1°, due to the hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate forming a rough micronanosilica shell and the grafting of the low surface energy FAS. In addition, the performance of the coating maintained good hydrophobic properties by sandpaper abrasion, falling sand impact, bending experiments, or immersion in strong acids and bases for 7 days. This shows that the coating has good mechanical properties and chemical durability. Compared to tinplate, the coating successfully delayed the complete freezing of droplets on its surface at −20 °C by 10 min. On a cooling platform at −40 °C, the F-BN@PPy coating with 1 sun light reached 5.7 °C in only 90 s. The F-BN@PPy photothermal superhydrophobic coating provides an excellent anti-icing/deicing solution for extreme environments.

High durability, low cost, and superior anti-icing and active deicing multifunctional surface coatings, especially in the extreme environment, are highly desired to inhibit and/or eliminate the detriment of icing in many fields, such as automobile, aerospace, and power transmission. Herein, we first report a facile and versatile strategy to prepare novel slippery polyols-infused porous surfaces (SPIPS’s) with the inexpensive polyols as the lubricant liquids. These SPIPS’s are fabricated by a spray-coating approach based on amino-modified magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (MNP@NH2) and amphiphilic P(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) copolymer covalent cross-linked hybrids, followed by infusion with various polyols. The as-prepared surface exhibits excellent antifrosting property, that is, it can greatly postpone frost formation as long as 2700 s at −18 °C. Meanwhile, differential scanning calorimetry results clearly demonstrate that SPIPS’s show a remarkable freezing point depression capacity and the crystallization point of water can be decreased as low as −36.8 °C. The SPIPS also displays an extremely low ice adhesion strength (0.1 kPa) due to its unique surface characteristics. Moreover, outstanding active thermal deicing property is achieved for these slippery surfaces because of intrinsically photothermal effect of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticle. Hence, these results indicate that this kind of multifunctional bioinspired slippery surface, with superb stability, good cost effectiveness, and easy fabrication, can be used as a promising candidate for anti-icing and deicing applications.

The accumulation of ice in winter has brought many problems in industrial production and everyday life, and how to prevent icing or remove ice rapidly has aroused great attention from researchers in recent years. In this work, we demonstrated a strategy of using a superhydrophobic photothermal and thermal isolation macroporous xerogel (PMX) to delay icing and remove ice efficiently under faint sunlight irradiation. An oriented macroporous xerogel was prepared by an ice templating method, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes acting as the photothermal genesis component under sunlight irradiation were introduced into the xerogel. After fluorination, the PMX presented a robust water repellency and delayed icing. More importantly, numerous macropores in the PMX matrix acted as the thermal barrier that can restrict heat transmission to surroundings at maximum, which guarantees efficient anti-icing and de-icing in low temperature. Water on the PMX surface can never freeze at −30 °C under 0.25 kW/m2 (“0.25 sun”) sunlight irradiation. The outdoor experiment also has confirmed the availability of PMX in a natural winter environment. The PMX integrated with thermogenesis and thermo-isolation functions provides a new route for highly efficient anti-icing and de-icing.

Solar energy-facilitated materials are promising to solve energy loss problems for anti-icing/deicing applications by conversion clean solar energy to thermal energy. However, the photothermal conversion performance seriously affect by dirt and liquid contaminants. Moreover, melted ice may wet photothermal materials and freeze again. Herein, durable superhydrophobic photothermal coatings were designed by modifying carbon nanotubes with dodecylamine (DDA) and dopamine via Michael addition reaction. Thanks to the photothermal synergistic effect of PDA and CNTs, the surface temperature of obtain coating rapidly rose to 89.8 °C under 1 kW/m 2 . Besides, hierarchical structure and low surface energy alkyl long chain of the coating provided excellent self-cleaning property (CA = 162.5 ± 0.9°), which can avoid the adhesion of contaminants and extend the freezing time of ice for anti-icing. Furthermore, the ice quickly melted and rolled off immediately after irradiation, which avoids refreezing again. Thus, the prepared coating maintained sustainable photothermal conversion for effective deicing performance. Besides, the prepared coating possessed mechanical durability, excellent corrosion protection and even kept self-cleaning ability at 400 °C. More importantly, the coating shows excellent self-healing property toward both mechanical and chemical damage. The outstanding environmental adaptability can greatly extend its lifespan and meet the long-term service conditions.

De-icing represents a significant of application areas for electrothermal materials. However, the primary focus is on the heating performance of electric heating materials, but the ability of materials to handle liquids is rarely mentioned. Consequently, developing a electrothermal material that can simultaneously exhibit liquid-conducting and de-icing capabilities represents a novel research direction. Silica porous ceramics (porosity, water absorption, oil absorption in the ranges of 62 %, 123 %, and 143 %, respectively) were prepared using the sacrificial template method with glass powder and diatomaceous earth as raw materials and PMMA and starch as pore-forming agents. Continuous conductive film networks of poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) are prepared inside the silica porous ceramics by dip-coating method. By controlling the times of dip-coating, the electrical conductivity of the composites was modulated, the minimum resistance is 9.52 Ω mm. The material has merit electric heating ability, which can be heated from room temperature to 210 °C at 3 V DC in 35 s. Furthermore, the porous ceramic material retained good liquid passage properties after dip-coating with the conductive film. The developed electrothermal porous ceramic materials have the potential for application in the field of electrothermal de-icing.

Superhydrophobic surfaces are considered to be an effective method for anti-icing, but passive anti-icing alone is not as effective as it should be, so it is crucial to develop effective anti-icing techniques. In this study, a photothermal anti-icing structure with multienergy barriers was designed by combining active and passive anti-icing technologies and prepared by a three-step method of laser etching, hydrothermal growth of nanostructures, and chemical modification based on the Cassie–Baxter–Wenzel transition theory. The experimental results show that the static water contact angle of the prepared surface is up to 160°, the sliding angle is less than 3.6°, and the surface temperature is 25 °C higher than that of the original control group over 100 s under standard solar irradiation. The multienergy barrier design greatly prolongs the time of the anti-icing, and the durability test shows that the surface maintains superhydrophobicity even after the abrasion of sandpaper and the impact of sand. This superhydrophobic photothermal coating has great potential for anti-icing and deicing applications.

The emergence of ice formation and accretion presents significant challenges, catalyzing an urgent need for clean and efficient anti-icing solutions. Solar energy, a powerful and sustainable resource, can be integrated with the micronano-structured superhydrophobic surface to enhance anti-icing and deicing performance through the solar photothermal effect, overcoming the limitations of a traditional superhydrophobic surface. Herein, inspired by bamboo and lotus leaves, a synergetic photothermal anti-icing superhydrophobic surface (PASS) has been developed. This was achieved through nanosecond laser ablation and chemical modification, resulting in a surface with remarkable superhydrophobic low adhesion (water contact angle >167°, rolling angle < 2°). The PASS notably extends the freezing time of water droplets to 1056 s and delays frost formation to 47 min at 60% humidity. Moreover, the surface retains its superhydrophobic properties after enduring several rigorous tests. Additionally, the photothermal conversion efficiency reaches up to 67.31%, and the temperature increases to 95.6 °C under 1.5 sun illumination for 600 s in ambient conditions (Tr = 7 °C). The ice melting time is only 120 s under 1 sun illumination at −15 °C. Consequently, the PASS sample stands as a preeminent strategy for anti-icing and deicing pursuits owing to its exceptional photothermal proficiency, superhydrophobicity, and enduring robustness.

Ice crystals and snow adhesion can affect the operation and reliability of machines in cold, snowy conditions, so anti-freeze systems are often installed in machines. Commonly used ice protection systems usually place electrothermal and a hydrophobic layer in one layer, or create a hydrophobic layer at top of the electrothermal layer. However, the hydrophobic layer ruptures and there is a risk of a short circuit when water comes into contact with the electrically heated layer. In this paper, a method of using boron nitride film to separate the functional layer is proposed to reduce the risk of short circuit in the electric heating layer. Finally, boron nitride film is successfully used as the intermediate layer to connect the superhydrophobic layer with the electric heating layer, which realizes the passive. The results show that the contact angle of the BN-based composite membrane can reach more than 160°. Under the heating power of 0.54 W/cm 2 , the BN-based composite membrane can reach the steady state temperature of 82.6 °C in 6 min, the deicing efficiency can reach 15.435 kg h −1 m −2 , and the removal of 6 mm thick melting ice takes only 185 s. In addition, after 10 electric heating cycles, the BN-based composite membrane can still maintain a temperature of about 80 °C, indicating that it has good durability. This study is of great significance for practical ice control applications.

Anti-icing and de-icing are vital for infrastructure maintenance. While carbon-based materials with photothermal or electrothermal effects have advanced, they face challenges like environmental dependence, poor resistance, high energy consumption, and complex manufacturing. Here, we developed a scalable, hybrid metamaterial driven by photothermal/electrothermal for all-weather anti-icing/de-icing. Its nanostructured surface delays icing by 360 s at −30°C, breaking records across a wide temperature range. The porous structure enhances light absorption, achieving a delayed icing time of 2500 s at −20°C under one sunlight. The graphene film’s high conductivity allows rapid de-icing with 1.6W power. After 720 h of outdoor exposure, the metamaterial retained a contact angle above 150°, confirming durability. More critically, we have demonstrated that the metamaterial can be manufactured on a large scale, which is essential for improving the economics of the anti-icing/de-icing sector.
