Fiberboard (FB) is extensively utilized in heat-insulating refractory materials owing to its lightweight nature and excellent resistance to high temperatures. Nevertheless, the inadequate mechanical properties and limited dimensional stability of FB hinder its further application. The vacuum filtration was utilized in this study to manufacture inorganically modified insulation FB, incorporating plus fiber/1260 fiber and silica sol as the primary constituents and sepiolite powder (HS) as the modifier. The experimental results show that the fabricated samples exhibited extremely high porosity (75.3%–90.2%) and low thermal conductivity (.063–.15 W m −1 K −1 , 200–800°C). The fibers were arranged in a three-dimensional structure, overlapping with each other, and the silica sol adhered to the fibers, forming a spatial mesh structure through cross-linking. Importantly, the incorporation of HS was effective in controlling the agglomeration of the silica sol, leading to a more uniform distribution within the fibers. Additionally, the study found that the mechanical properties (high hardness (64–72 HA)) and high-temperature durability of the FBs were enhanced due to the flocculant modification. This study highlights promising prospects for industrial applications and offers a cost-effective admixture for modifying and preparing high-performance FBs, which is expected to see broad adoption in thermal insulation and energy conservation applications.

In this study, mullite thermal insulation materials with in-situ synthesized mullite hollow whiskers were prepared by a solid-state reaction method using industrial alumina and silica as raw materials and tungsten-containing compounds as catalysts. The phase transition, microstructures, and effects of in-situ formed hollow whiskers on morphologies and properties of mullite thermal insulation materials were investigated by TG-DTA, XRD, SEM, TEM, thermal conductivity and compressive strength tests. The formation mechanism of mullite hollow whiskers was also studied. The results show that Al–Si–O agglomerations adsorbed on the surface of Al 2 (WO 4 ) 3 columnar particles which were formed at about 900 °C, then the decomposition of Al 2 (WO 4 ) 3 columnar particles and mullitization of Al–Si–O agglomerations led to the formation of mullite hollow whiskers at about 1200 °C. The mullite thermal insulation materials (prepared at 1500 °C) with in-situ formed hollow whiskers exhibit a low thermal conductivity of 0.329 W/(m∙K) to 0.396 W/(m∙K) and a sufficient cold compressive strength of 5.22 MPa. The physical and mechanical properties were controlled by the width and aspect ratio of mullite hollow whiskers. The research of this work provides a new insight into the development of mullite thermal insulation materials used at high temperatures.

Thermal insulation nanomaterials based on aerogels have attracted more and more researchers’ attention due to their low thermal conductivity and lightweight characteristics. However, the high-temperature thermal insulation performance and the mechanical strength of the material itself remain a great challenge. We developed a method to construct multi-scale structures of thermal insulation materials based on dry aerogel particles, ultralong nanowires, and interfacial crosslinkers. In our work, the introduction of surfactants enabled the effective dispersion of aerogels and nanowires in the aqueous solution instead of in an organic solvent. Also, thanks to the synergistic effect of crosslinkers and nanowires, the materials exhibit a good mechanical strength; the maximum value of tensile strength for nanocomposite materials is up to 0.76 MPa. Aerogels with a resistance of 1000 °C and reflecting screens were adopted to prepare the multiple-layer thermal insulation materials, enabling the obtained material to show the outstanding thermal insulation property [0.028 W (m·K)−1 at 25 °C and 0.059 W (m·K)−1 at 800 °C]; additionally, when the temperature of the heating surface was raised to 800 °C, the back surface temperature of 15 mm materials increased to an ultimate temperature of only 218 °C after heat treatment for 500 s. These favorable multi-features indicate the materials are ideal for thermal insulation in industrial, aerospace, and even extreme environmental conditions.

Nanoporous silica aerogels have great potential in the application of thermal insulation. However, the commonly used supercritical drying technology of nanoporous silica aerogels has disadvantages such as high cost, high complexity, and harsh drying conditions. Herein, a template orientation strategy has been proposed for fabricating nanoporous aerogel-like silica monoliths (ASMs) based on the low-cost, rapid ambient drying technology without additional treatments of surface modification and solvent exchanging. The successful implementation of the template orientation strategy depends on the silica slurry, which is composed of commercial fumed silica, hydrolyzed methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS), and sole water solvent. The solidification of silica slurry has been achieved by a controlled polycondensation reaction catalyzed by ammonia originating from the thermolysis of urea. Owing to the skeleton enhancement of fumed silica powders and the hydrophobic effect of methyl groups, ASMs maintain well monolithic formability during ambient drying. Meanwhile, low-cost fumed silica powders have been seen as template orientation agents for inducing MTMS molecules to generate nanoparticle-based network skeletons, endowing ASMs with typical nanopore features (specific surface area as high as 113 m2/g and pore diameter distribution concentrated at ∼40 nm). The resulting ASMs exhibit low density (0.36 g/cm3), high compressive strength (0.92 MPa), and low thermal conductivity [0.056 W/(m·K)]. This work would provide significant guidelines for the fabrication and thermal insulation applications of nanoporous ASMs derived from ceramic powders. This simple and low-cost preparation strategy would promote the large-scale applications and industrial production of nanoporous silica for thermal insulation materials.

Low cost, low energy consumption, and environment-friendly novel thermal insulation materials are highly attractive for energy-efficient buildings. However, traditional petroleum-based foams and aerogel require complicated processing, high cost, and non-degradability, which limit their sustainable development and application. Herein, multifunctional robust sunflower straw-based xerogels as thermal insulation materials are fabricated by simply filtrating and drying under ambient pressure without any extraction processing, due to sunflower straw raw materials with high content of cellulose . With the addition of KH550 and SiO 2 nanoparticles, the obtained sunflower straw-based xerogels exhibit excellent thermal insulation (0.0469 W/(mK)), superior superhydrophobicity (water contact angle (WCA) = 153.2°), remarkable fire resistance, high mechanical property. These advanced properties make it an ideal thermally insulation material for diversified applications in harsh environments.

To improve the properties of mullite-based thermal insulation materials typically prepared by foam-casting method, samples were heat treated under carbon monoxide atmosphere created by a carbon bed at 600 °C and 800 °C, respectively. The effects of reduction process on microstructure, pore size distribution, phase evolution, cold crushing strength (CCS), and thermal conductivity of the resultant materials were systematically studied. The results showed that the formation of high aspect ratio mullite whiskers and small amounts of glassy phases among whiskers during the reduction process are demonstrated as the key factors in improving the properties of the resultant materials. The mechanical properties are determined to be significantly enhanced for the binding effect of glassy phase among whiskers with soaking duration gradually increased to 48 h. And the lower thermal conductivity of samples treated for 24–48 h are mainly due to the high connectivity and lowered size of pores from the accumulation of high aspect ratio whiskers. Compared with samples treated at 800 °C, both the highest CCS (4.2 MPa) and minimum thermal conductivity (0.15 W/m K) were obtained in the sample heat treated at 600 °C for 48 h. Hence, it was demonstrated that the use of low-temperature reduction process could enhance the mechanical and thermal insulation properties of mullite-based thermal insulation materials.

The inherent brittleness and hydrophilicity of ceramics pose a great challenge to designing a reliable structure that can resist mechanical loads and moisture in extreme conditions with high temperature and high humidity. Here, we report a two-phase hydrophobic silica–zirconia composite ceramic nanofiber membrane (H-ZSNFM) with exceptional mechanical robustness and high-temperature hydrophobic resistance. For the dual-phasic nanofibers, the amorphous silica blocked the connection of zirconia nanocrystals, and the lattice distortion was observed due to Si in the ZrO2 lattice. H-ZSNFM has strong strength (5–8.4 MPa), high hydrophobic temperature resistance (450 °C), high porosity (89%), low density (40 mg/cm3), low thermal conductivity (30 mW/m·K), and excellent thermal radiation reflectivity (90%). By simulating the actual high-temperature and high-humidity environment, 10-mm-thick H-ZSNFMs can reduce the heat source from 1365 to 380 °C and maintain complete hydrophobicity even in a water vapor environment of 350 °C. This means that it has superior insulation and waterproof performance even in a high-temperature water environment. For firefighting clothing, H-ZSNFM displayed waterproof and insulation layers, which have excellent thermal protection performance and achieve incompatibility between water and fire, providing valuable time for fire rescue and a safety line of defense for emergency personnel. This design strategy with mechanical robust and hydrophobic temperature resistance applies to the development of many other types of high-performance thermal insulation materials and presents a competitive material system for thermal protection in extreme conditions.

Nanofiber-like and nanorod-like boehmite aerogels (BAs) were synthesized by using 1D boehmite nanofibers and nanorods as building units and chitosan as binder via sol-gel process and freeze-drying method. Two kinds of boehmite sols were both gelled via ammonia vapor gelation method. Nanofiber-like building units interconnect and tangle to form high-surface-area porous structures of BA-160, while nanorod-like ones self-accumulate and overlap to construct large-pore-diameter skeletons of BA-200. The compressive property of BAs mainly originates from the interaction of overlap joints between building units, and the overlap joints among nanofibers provide more anti-pressure positions than the ones among nanorods. The skeletons are further enhanced under the help of chitosan macromolecules due to the improved polycondensation between aluminoxane via ammonia vapor. With the increase of chitosan content, the mechanical properties of BAs increase, but the thermal conductivities decrease. All of ultralight BAs can be regarded as good thermal insulation materials.
Nanofiber-like and nanorod-like boehmite aerogels (BAs) were synthesized by using 1D boehmite nanofibers and nanorods as building units and chitosan as binder via sol-gel process and freeze-drying method. Boehmite sols turning into gels were induced by ammonia vapor, which is beneficial to homogeneous gelation of boehmite sols. Two kinds of BAs possess different mechanical properties due to different porous structural characteristics. All of BAs present the features of ultralight and thermal insulation.

With ultralight weight, low thermal conductivity, and extraordinary high-temperature resistance, carbon aerogels hold tremendous potential against severe thermal threats encountered by hypersonic vehicles during the in-orbit operation and re-entry process. However, current 3D aerogels are plagued by irreconcilable contradictions between adiabatic and mechanical performance due to monotonicity of the building blocks or uncontrollable assembly behavior. Herein, a spatially confined assembly strategy of multiscale low-dimensional nanocarbons is reported to decouple the stress and heat transfer. The nanofiber framework, a basis for transferring the loading strain, is covered by a continuous thin-film-like layer formed by the aggregation of nanoparticles, which in combination serve as the fundamental structural units for generating an elastic behavior while yielding compartments in aerogels to suppress the gaseous fluid thermal diffusion within distinct partitions. The resulting all-carbon aerogels with a hierarchical cellular structure and quasi-closed cell walls achieve the best thermomechanical and insulation trade-off, exhibiting flyweight density (24 mg cm −3 ), temperature-constant compressibility (−196–1600 °C), and a low thermal conductivity of 0.04 829 W m −1 K −1 at 300 °C. This strategy provides a remarkable thermal protection material in hostile environments for future aerospace exploration.

Carbon-based insulation materials exhibit remarkable potential for use in thermal protection systems (TPS) in extreme environments such as hypersonic vehicles and deep-space missions. This is attributed to their ultralight structure, exceptional thermal insulation properties, and outstanding high-temperature stability. Nevertheless, traditional carbon aerogels frequently experience significant volume shrinkage during fabrication, which makes it challenging to optimize their structural and thermal performance. Inspired by the performance enhancement induced by hollow fiber structures, a carbide-derived carbon (CDC) strategy was employed in this study to fabricate a hollow carbon fiber-based porous insulation material (CF-H); carbon fiber felt (CF) was used as the structural template. The CDC strategy combined the template method with a conformal transformation mechanism to achieve minimal volume shrinkage (10.22%) and high porosity (98.84%). The hollow fiber framework reduced density (19 mg·cm −3 ), minimized heat transfer, and provided low thermal conductivity (0.09553 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 300 °C). Moreover, CF-H retained the needle-punched architecture of the CF template, thereby exhibiting excellent elasticity under mechanical stress. In conclusion, applying the CDC strategy to develop lightweight, high-performance carbon-based insulation materials offers a novel perspective on design and development of TPS insulation for application in extreme aerospace conditions.

Silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) is considered to be a promising material for thermal insulation. However, the application scenarios of insulation materials are limited, and how to enhance their practical application value has been an attractive research topic. In this work, SiO 2 nanofibres were prepared by the electrospinning technology. Effects of different heat-treatment parameters on SiO 2 crystal transformation, nanofibres’ diameter and thermal conductivity were investigated, and the thermal-insulation mechanism of SiO 2 nanofibres was further studied. Results of the study show that the heat-treatment process has a significant effect on nanofibre diameter, which affects thermal conductivity. When the heat-treatment temperature is 900°C, the heating rate is 8°C min −1 and holding time is 2 h, the diameter of SiO 2 nanofibres is the finest, and thermal conductivity is the lowest (0.039 W mK −1 ). In addition, nanofibres is demonstrated as functional fillers of thermal-insulation coating, which exhibit excellent thermal insulation and mechanical properties. This study can provide a certain reference value for the development of new lightweight and functional thermal-insulation fillers.

Owing to the high porosity and low thermal conductivity of organic aerogels, they have been widely used to develop lightweight heat insulation materials. However, their applications in high-temperature environments such as in aerospace applications are usually limited by the heat resistance or ablative property of the organic matrix. In this study, we prepared a novel organic aerogel for high-temperature insulation by the sol–gel method and freeze-drying. The matrix is the thermosetting silicon-containing polyarylacetylene (PSA) resin with excellent comprehensive properties, namely, high heat stability, low volatile component content, and high-temperature ceramic performance. The obtained PSA aerogel retains the heat resistance (T d5 = 634.8°C) and ablative properties (Y r800 = 92.6%) of the PSA resin, and the internal regular macropores and high porosity (70%) result in an extremely low weight (0.1200 g cm −3 ), low thermal conductivity (0.039 W m −1 K −1 )), and efficient heat insulation. Thus, this is an ideal material for high-temperature insulation in the aerospace field.
