In the reaction system with NaBH 4 as a hydrogen donor, inhibiting the formation of hydrogen is the key to promote the efficient catalytic hydrogenation of CO 2 . In this study, nanoscale zero-valent nickel supported on carbon nanofibers (Ni 0 /CNFs) was fabricated as a catalyst for CO 2 hydrogenation in aqueous NaBH 4 solution. The characteristics of Ni 0 /CNFs were examined. By SEM, it was observed that spherical nickel nanoparticles were distributed homogeneously on the surface of strip-shaped carbon nanofibers. EDS mappings indicated that elements were evenly distributed on the catalyst, which might contribute to the uniform exposure of active sites. Via XRD, it was determined that all the diffraction peaks corresponded to the crystal face of nickel metal and that the absence of diffraction peaks of carbon nanofibers indicated that the crystallinity of the carrier was low. XPS study showed that nickel existed on the catalyst surface in two forms: zero valence metal and oxidation state. The effects of catalyst addition amount, NaBH 4 concentration, NaOH dosage, stirring rate on the yield of formate and hydrogen generation rate (HGR) were investigated. By optimizing the above parameters, the concentration of formate reached 150 mmol/L and the hydrogen production rate was 10.55 mL/min. Compared with the non-catalytic conditions, the concentration of formate increased by 57 % and the HGR decreased by 78 %. Moreover, the relationship between CO 2 hydrogenation and NaBH 4 hydrolysis was clarified. This research could enhance comprehension of CO 2 hydrogenation in aqueous NaBH 4 solution and contribute to the development of CO 2 capture and utilization storage technology. The significance of this study lies in clarifying the connection between CO 2 hydrogenation and borohydride hydrolysis in CO 2 catalytic hydrogenation technology.

Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) is extensively employed in the realm of wastewater treatment. However, conventional synthesis methods involve inherent risks of nZVI oxidation and aggregation, resulting in challenging recovery and potential waste generation. To address these concerns and improve stability, nano zero-valent nickel (nZVNi) was employed as a modifier for nZVI. The modified nZVNi/nZVI was successfully blended with polydopamine (PDA)-modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) powder, enabling the preparation of a novel hydrophilic composite membrane termed nZVNi/nZVI-PDA@PVDF (NFPP). PDA played a crucial role in effectively immobilizing nZVI particles and preventing their oxidation and aggregation. Scanning electron microscopy was used to confirm the consistent dispersion of nZVNi/nZVI particles both on the surface of the membrane and within its pores. Moreover, the NFPP membrane exhibited excellent performance in removing Cr(VI), with a maximum adsorption capacity of 75.65 mg/g. The presence of PDA endowed the NFPP membrane with a plentiful supply of hydroxyl and amino groups, enhancing its hydrophilicity, antioxidation properties, and loading capacity for nZVNi/nZVI. Additionally, the NFPP membrane demonstrated remarkable resistance to interference under different pH and ionic conditions. The removal of Cr(VI) by the NFPP membrane followed a pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. Furthermore, the NFPP membrane retained good performance and stability in Cr(VI) removal even after undergoing five cycles. This study indicates that the highly efficient NFPP composite material holds promising potential for application as a functional material in heavy metal wastewater treatment.

Magnetic hybrid nanomaterials composed of reduced graphene oxide , zero-valent nickel, and NiAl-mixed metal oxides (rGO/Ni/MMO) have been synthesized by calcining graphene oxide (GO)/layered double hydroxide (LDH) hybrid in nitrogen atmosphere. Structural characterizations demonstrate that with the presence of GO substrate, NiAl–LDHs can be reduced into zero-valent Ni and NiAl–MMOs during calcination . Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used to investigate the morphology of the as-prepared hybrid nanomaterials, demonstrating that the introduction of GO substrate prevents the aggregation of LDHs. Magnetism characterization proves the ferromagnetic property of rGO/Ni/MMO hybrid. This magnetic hybrid nanomaterial exhibits excellent adsorption ability toward methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solutions. The kinetics of the adsorption process and the adsorption isotherm are investigated. The MO removal process is found to obey the Redlich–Peterson isotherm model, and its kinetics follows pseudo-second-order rate equation . In addition, the magnetic hybrid also exhibits good recycle ability for MO removal. This novel magnetic hybrid nanomaterial derived from GO/LDH hybrid demonstrates great potential in the applications of water treatment.

This study was conducted to address water pollution concerns entwined with electroless nickel plating (ENP) industry. Its principal endeavor centers on the development and application of an innovative single-compartment technique to proficiently treat spent ENP baths. The research demonstrated the recovery of Nickel (Ni) from wastewater through synergistic interactions between electrocatalytic oxidation and electrodeposition processes. Electrochemical tests used a direct current power supply in constant current mode, with the positive pole on IrO 2 /Ti mesh and negative pole on stainless steel. Zero-valent nickel recovered on the electrodes was conclusively identified via SEM, XRD, and EDS analyses. This work carefully examined the impact of initial pH, initial Ni ion concentration, and current density (CD) on electrochemical recovery efficiency. The findings suggest that higher current densities positively influence the Ni recovery ratio. Additionally, through meticulous experiments, the viability of this approach for treating spent ENP baths has been confirmed. An impressive 98.88% recovery of Ni was achieved under specific conditions: CD 4.5 mA cm −2 , experimental time 180 min, pH 4.5, electrodes spacing 1.5 cm, temperature 55 °C, and a dilution factor 10 times. The study demonstrated the process for Ni recovering from ENP wastewater through direct oxidation and subsequent decomposition, leading to liberation of free Ni ions. The recovered substance, identified as zero-valent nickel, adheres to the electrodes. The method employed in this research is described by its cost-effectiveness, user-friendliness, and low energy consumption. As a result, this study makes valuable contributions to both wastewater remediation and the sustainable utilization of Ni resources.

This study reported a Ni 0 @ZIF-8 nanocomposite synthesized via co-precipitation that synergistically integrated the high adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 with the redox activity of zero-valent nickel (Ni 0 ) for efficient uranium(VI) extraction. The composite with an optimized 1:1 ZIF-8:Ni 0 molar ratio achieved an exceptional adsorption capacity of 830.5 mg/g. Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses confirmed chemisorption-dominated monolayer adsorption following pseudo-second-order kinetics (R 2 > 0.999) and spontaneous endothermic behavior. Mechanistic investigations through spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed a dual-function mechanism that ZIF-8 facilitated U(VI) capture through electrostatic/coordination interactions, while Ni 0 mediated partial reduction of U(VI) to U(IV) via electron transfer, enhancing immobilization stability. Notably, only Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , Cr 6+ , and organic ligands inhibited adsorption through redox competition and solution complexation. Comparative studies demonstrated minimal matrix interference-deionized water versus seawater systems exhibit merely 4.7 % deviation in adsorption efficiency at trace U(VI) concentrations (0.1–0.6 mg/L). Critically, direct uranium extraction from unprocessed natural seawater (ambient U: 4.27 μg/L) with only pH adjustment (5.0) achieves 86.02 % efficiency at ultra-low adsorbent dosage (0.001 g/L), yielding residual uranium concentrations of 0.597 ± 0.04 μg/L. By harmonizing adsorption and redox pathways, Ni 0 @ZIF-8 overcome limitations of conventional materials, establishing itself as a paradigm-shifting solution for uranium remediation in complex ionic matrices and real marine environments.

Nano zero-valent nickel nanoparticles (Ni 0 NPs) were successfully immobilized onto Enteromorpha -derived biochar to enhance the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from aqueous solutions through an integrated adsorption-magnetic recovery process. Comprehensive characterization techniques revealed the uniform dispersion of Ni 0 NPs on the biochar surface, with particle sizes predominantly ranging from 60 to 100 nm. The synthesized composites (HTNF@Ni 0 ) exhibited an exceptional specific surface area of 1388 m 2 /g, which contributed to its outstanding phenanthrene removal performance, achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 248.54 mg/g. The experimental data were well-fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. Moreover, the magnetic composite demonstrated excellent regeneration properties and stability in phenanthrene removal after four consecutive cycles. Additionally, the optimized structure, charge distribution, LUMO-HOMO energy gap (E GAP ), and adsorption energy of the composite indicated strong π-π interactions and charge transfer between active functional groups (e.g., –OH, −NHR, –COOH, −C–OH), particularly the electron donor–acceptor interaction between metallic Ni 0 nanoparticles and target contaminants. The interaction was confirmed as an exothermic process, predominantly governed by chemical adsorption mechanisms. This study provides novel insights into the development of innovative magnetic composites and their potential for practical applications in wastewater treatment.

Developing highly efficient uranium removal adsorbents is crucial for environmental remediation purposes. In this study, a novel nanocomposite consisting of nano zero-valent nickel (nZVN) supported on layered ZnCdS nanosheets (nZVN-ZCS) was synthesized using an in situ growth approach. This distinct 0D-2D architecture effectively inhibits the agglomeration of nZVN nanoparticles and synergistically integrates U(VI) adsorption with enhanced reduction, driven by superior electron transfer capabilities. Batch experiments demonstrate exceptionally rapid adsorption kinetics, reaching equilibrium within 20 min, and conform to both the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. Notably, the optimal 0.03nZVN-ZCS sample exhibits unprecedented maximum adsorption capacities of 1670 mg/g at 298 K and 2977 mg/g at 318 K (pH 4.0), significantly exceeding the capacities reported for most adsorbents. Additionally, nZVN-ZCS demonstrates high U(VI) selectivity in the presence of coexisting ions and shows excellent potential for continuous treatment of large volumes in dynamic adsorption experiments. The adsorption mechanism, elucidated through techniques such as XPS, FT-IR, TEM, and DFT calculations, demonstrates that nZVN-ZCS facilitates the immobilization and reduction of U(VI) through the action of Ni 0 and S 2- . These findings position the 0D-2D nZVN-ZCS nanocomposite as a highly efficient adsorbent, holding substantial promise for addressing challenges associated with uranium contamination.

In this article, foam zero-valent nickel (FZVN) was put forward as a promising zero-valent metal for the pretreatment of azo dye wastewater (MO as a model contaminant). The characteristics of FZVN were evaluated by methods of Barrett-Emmett-Teller, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Moreover, influence of key experimental parameters, including oxygen concentration, presence of different acid, pH, and temperature on the MO decolorization were systematically ascertained. Furthermore, possible mechanism of MO removal by FZVN was investigated by using Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Results showed that FZVN was a three-dimensional pore material with a specific surface area of 3 m 2 g −1 . Moreover, anoxic condition, presence of acetic acid, higher temperatures and acid conditions were beneficial to decolorize MO by FZVN while the decolorization process obeyed the first order kinetic model with an apparent rate constant ( k app ) of 0.162 min −1 at pH value of 4 (25°C). The activation energy E a obtained from the decolorization reaction was 83.1 kJ mol −1 . Based on LC-MS results, the role of FZVN in the decolorization reaction process was suggested as follows: strong reductive, catalysis, and adsorption. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 37: 686–694, 2018
