Background The limited ovicidal activity of currently available acaricides is a significant obstacle to efficacious scabies treatment. Several essential oils or their respective components have proved to be active against the eggs of arthropods, mainly lice and ticks. Information on the activity of these oils and/or components against the eggs of mites remains very limited. The aim of this study was to assess the activity of six terpenes (carvacrol, eugenol, geraniol, citral, terpinen-4-ol and linalool) commonly found in essential oils against the eggs of Sarcoptes scabiei . Methods Sarcoptes eggs were exposed to paraffin oil containing 1, 2.5, or 5% of each terpene tested. After a 12-h exposure period, the eggs were washed and placed in paraffin oil for hatching. Embryonic development following treatment was assessed every day to determine the stage of developmental arrest. Results The median effective concentration to obtain 50% egg mortality (EC 50 ) was 0.5, 0.9, 2.0, 4.8, 5.1 and 9.8% for carvacrol, eugenol, geraniol, citral, terpinen-4-ol and linalool, respectively. The microscopic images of eggs after each treatment indicated that these six terpenes may act by penetrating through the aeropyles on the egg surface. Conclusions In conclusion, carvacrol, eugenol and geraniol possess significant ovicidal activities, which should be considered as promising ovicidal agents for the treatment of scabies. Foodborne illnesses remain a significant concern in the realm of public health. Managing food spoilage and controlling pathogenic microorganisms rely on synthetic chemicals, regrettably accompanied by various unfavourable attributes. In response to the escalating demand for innovative and secure alternative approaches, there has been a surge in the investigation of naturally sourced agents possessing antimicrobial characteristics, among which essential oils stand out. This study focuses on improving the stability of clove essential oil (CEO), and to achieve controlled release, the CEO microcapsules are prepared by solvent evaporation method with ethyl cellulose as the wall material. The results indicated optimum technological conditions: wall material mass fraction of 3%, core wall ratio of 1.0:1.5, emulsifier mass fraction of 8% and shear rate of 14000 r/min. Under these conditions, the encapsulation efficiency is 81.28%, and the yield rate is 90.58%. The CEOM were spherical with a size of 1.43-3.92 μm and had good thermal stability. The microcapsule under 50% ethanol showed a faster release rate and significant release amount. The microencapsulation of CEO with ethyl cellulose can not only improve the stability of CEO but also realise the controlled release of CEO, which has tremendous application value in antibacterial packaging.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L) essential oil (REO) has an inhibitory effect against pests and is regarded as a safe alternative to synthetic acaricides. This study investigated the acaricidal and repellent activity of REO and underlying mechanisms against Aleuroglyphus ovatus, an important mite pest of stored products. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry analysis of REO indicated that the compounds of 1,8-cineole (25.20%) was the highest. REO at 13% concentration provided the highest repellent effect (92.67%) on A. ovatus, and the lowest repellent activity (48.67%) was at 0.8% concentration. Microscopic observations revealed that the mite epidermis started to shrink after treatment with REO at 6 h post-treatment. The enzyme level of catalase (CAT), acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) decreased significantly (P < 0.05), whereas there was a significant increase (P < 0.05) in nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and glutathione-s-transferases (GST) activities in A. ovatus treated with REO. In the molecular docking study, camphor and 1,8-cineole, the main monoterpenes of REO, bind more closely with CAT and AChE, and PI-conjugated interaction, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic were found by molecular docking 3D model. Overall, our results indicate the potential of REO as an effective botanical acaricide to manage A. ovatus.

A functional edible film containing Pickering emulsion (PE) loaded with oregano essential oil (OEO) was developed. The sustained release of OEO in muffins significantly delayed muffin decay at 25°C ( p < 0.05). According to the influence of oxygen permeability, antibacterial activity and mechanical properties of the active film, the optimum preparation conditions of PE were determined by orthogonal experiment. Peroxide values (POVs), total viable count (TVC) and yeast and mould count (YMC) were significantly lower compared with the blank group. On Day 6, the POV in the experimental group was 63% that of the blank group. TVC and YMC were 3.20 and 1.86 lg CFU/g on Day 9, respectively (TVC ≤ 1500 CFU/g; YMC ≤ 100 CFU/g), extending muffins shelf life to 6–7 days in practical preservation at 25°C. Thus, the edible PE loaded with OEO film provided sustained release, effectively slowing muffin quality deterioration and extending shelf life, making it a promising choice for future high-fat food packaging.

Cacopsylla chinensis (Yang and Li) (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) is an important pest of pear in China. As an alternative to conventional chemical pesticides, botanicals including essential oils and their constituents could provide an eco-friendly and nonhazardous control method. In this study, the essential oil of clove buds ( Syzygium aromaticum ) was obtained by hydrodistillation. Five constituents, accounting for 99.89% of the oil, were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the major constituents were eugenol (88.61%) and eugenol acetate (8.89%), followed by β -caryophyllene (1.89%). In a laboratory bioassay, clove essential oil, commercial eugenol (99.00%) and β -caryophyllene (98.00%) exhibited strong contact toxicity against the summerform adults of C. chinensis with LD 50 values of 0.730, 0.673, and 0.708 µg/adult, and against the nymphs with LD 50 values of 1.795, 1.668, and 1.770 µg/nymph, respectively. In contrast, commercial eugenol acetate (98%) had LD 50 values of 9.266 µg/adult and 9.942 µg/nymph. In a field trial, clove essential oil caused significant population reductions of 73.01% (4.80 mg/ml), 66.18% (2.40 mg/ml) and 46.56% (1.20 mg/ml), respectively. Our results demonstrated that clove essential oil and its constituents have potential as a source of natural insecticides.

In response to the rapid quality degradation of peaches due to post-harvest decay, this study developed a composite film for preservation. Two primary pathogens responsible for peach decay, Aspergillus flavus and Talaromyces funiculosus , were identified. Molecular docking attributed to the main binding position of citral and geraniol's interactions with type I polyketide synthase on their antifungal effects, as well as the caffeic acid with its tyrosinase on antioxidant efficacy. β -CD-MOFs were synthesized via vapor diffusion, demonstrating exceptional spatial loading via SEM. CEOs (citral + geraniol) encapsulated in β -CD-MOFs were incorporated into a chitosan/pullulan matrix, yielding a film with 260.27 % fracture tensile strain, significantly ( P < 0.001) outperforming pure chitosan (21.87 %), possessing excellent mechanical properties, and the improvement in the water solubility of the film facilitates the release of active compounds. The utilization of a compositel film on peaches has shown significant efficacy in controlling decay index ( P < 0.05), weight loss ( P < 0.05), firmness ( P < 0.05) and production of malondialdehyde ( P < 0.05). Compared to untreated controls, the treated peaches exhibited an extended shelf life of 2 days, highlighting the superior preservation capabilities of the film. Hence, the film presents a promising solution for fruit preservation.

Smart antibacterial Pickering emulsion can respond to the stimulation of environmental conditions to control the release of antibacterial agents, protecting the quality and safety of food. In this study, Fe 3 O 4 was grafted on the cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) via ultrasound-assisted in situ co-precipitation to synthesize the magnetic cellulose nanocomposite particles. When the ratio of FeCl 3 and FeCl 2 was 1.5:1, the prepared particles CNC/Fe 1.5 exhibited the maximum saturation magnetization intensity of 54.98 emu/g and good emulsion stability, which was used to emulsify oregano essential oil (OEO) to fabricate smart antibacterial Pickering emulsion with magnetically responsive ability. The emulsion with the oil-water ratio of 3:7 and the particle concentration of 0.3 wt% showed the excellent stability and sensitive responsiveness of magnetic. The OEO released rapidly within 0–8 h followed by the slow release when the emulsion was stimulated by 0.2 T, 0.4 T and 0.6 T magnetic field. The antibacterial rate of the emulsion was close to 100 % against both E. coli and L. monocytogenes at magnetic field with 0.4 T and 0.6 T in 12 h, achieving the smart antimicrobial. The prepared smart antibacterial Pickering emulsion would provide a novel material and have the potential in food packaging.

The characteristics of natural aromatic compounds have promoted the research of efficient extraction methods. In this study, quantum chemical (QC) calculation, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and experimental verification were combined to solve the problems of low extraction rate and solvent pollution of agarwood essential oil, and the screening and extraction mechanism of green extractants were systematically analyzed. Based on the mechanism of ethanol extraction of the main components of agarwood essential oil, through QC calculation, extraction experiments and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), it was found that choline chloride:ethylene glycol (ChCl:EG) at 1: 4, T = 40 °C , under the condition of 8 h, the extraction rate reached 24.2 %, which was 226 % higher than that of traditional ethanol solvent, and maintained good stability in five reuse cycles. In addition, the extraction mechanism of the process was clarified. The hydroxyl group in ChCl:EG forms additional interaction sites with the oxygen atoms on the ring structure of the target compound, which enhances the hydrogen bond and van der Waals force, and significantly improves the selective dissolution of the target compound. The effects of different ChCl:EG ratios and temperatures on the extraction efficiency were evaluated by MD simulation. The results show that the effect of temperature on the interaction of the system is greater than that of the proportion, and ethylene glycol in Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) plays a major role. This research provides new insights into the use of DES for green extraction of natural products and establishes a theoretical and experimental basis for future industrial applications.

The effects of fennel essential oil (FEO) and peppermint essential oil (PEO) on chitosan-based films were evaluated in this study. The results showed that the addition of FEO and PEO slightly increased the density and thickness, while significantly decreasing the moisture content, water swelling, and solubility properties. The color values (L,a,b, ΔEand whiteness index (WI)) of the composite films containing FEO and PEO changed obviously with a tendency toward yellowness, which was beneficial in resisting food decomposition caused by ultraviolet light. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and fourier-transform-infrared (FTIR) results indicated that the addition of FEO and PEO affected the structure of the chitosan films, while the interaction between the chitosan and polyphenols in FEO and PEO established new hydrogen bonds and improved the thermal stability. The environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) illustrated that the surfaces of the composite films containing FEO and PEO were smooth, but the cross-section was rougher than in pure chitosan film. Furthermore, the composite films containing FEO and PEO exhibited prominent antioxidant activity. In short, the novel active chitosan-based films with incorporated FEO and PEO present broad application prospects in fresh-cut meat or vegetable packaging. Keywords:active packaging;composite film;fennel essential oil;peppermint essential oil;antioxidant activity

Biocompatible skin wound dressing materials with long-term therapeutic windows and anti-infection properties have attracted great attention all over the world. The cooperation between essential oil and non-toxic or bio-based polymers was a promising strategy. However, the inherent volatility and chemical instability of most ingredients in essential oils make the sustained pharmacological activity of essential oil-based biomaterials a challenge. In this study, a kind of film nanocomposite loaded with patchouli essential oil (PEO-FNC) was fabricated. PEO-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (PEO-MSNs) with drug load higher than 40 wt% were firstly prepared using supercritical CO2cyclic impregnation (SCCI), and then combined with the film matrix consisting of polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan. The morphology of PEO-MSNs and PEO-FNC was observed by transmission and scanning electron microscope. The mechanical properties, including hygroscopicity, tensile strength and elongation at break (%), were tested. The release behavior of PEO from the film nanocomposite showed that PEO could keep releasing for more than five days. PEO-FNC exhibited good long-term (>48 h) antibacterial effect onStaphylococcus aureusand non-toxicity on mouse fibroblast (L929 cells), making it a promising wound dressing material. Keywords:wound dressing;supercritical CO2;patchouli essential oil;antibacterial;long-term;porous;film

Traditional packaging materials easily cause white pollution, developing green biological packaging is highly important for environmental sustainability. In this study, double-modified tapioca starch (DMTS) was prepared and characterized. Further, clove essential oil (Ceo) at concentrations of 0.5 %/0.75 %/1.0 %/1.25 % (wt%) was loaded into the DMTS film matrix to develop an applicable active packaging material. XRD analysis and FT-IR results revealed that esterified starch was successfully prepared, the DM/CS/Ceo films had a dense intermolecular network, and the Ceo was successfully incorporated into the polymer matrix. The performance test results demonstrate well-performing mechanical, hydrophobic, and antioxidant properties of Ceo series composite films. Specifically, the EAB of the 1.25 % Ceo film increased by 10.7 %, the water contact angle increased by 18.89°, and the DPPH free radical clearance increased by 12.79 times compared to that of the DM film. In addition, the inhibition rates of the 1.25 % Ceo film against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus reached 86.51 % and 86.84 %, respectively. These results indicate that Ceo films have tremendous potential application value in prolonging food storage life.

This study aimed to develop active films based on carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/locust bean gum (LBG) films containingMelissa officinalisL. essential oil (MOEO) nanoemulsions. The results showed that the active films incorporated with MOEO nanoemulsion resulted in an increase in the elongation of break, water resistance and improved the film hydrophilicity. Elongation of break increased from 18.49% to 27.97% with the addition of 4% MOEO nanoemulsion. Water resistance was decreased from 56.32% to 25.43%, and water contact angle was increased from 75.13 to 83.86 with the addition of 4% MOEO nanoemulsion. However, the water vapor barrier properties and tensile strength decreased with the addition of MOEO nanoemulsions. The scanning electron microscopic images and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that the MOEO was very compatible with the film materials and dispersed evenly in the films. At the same time, the addition of MOEO nanoemulsion significantly enhanced antioxidant and antibacterial activities of C/L-MOEO films. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of C/L-MOEO films were increased from 7.16% to 33.81% and 3.52% to 54.50%, respectively. In general, C/L-MOEO film has great application prospects. Keywords:essential oil;active film;nanoemulsions;antibacterial activity
