Chloride-ion batteries (CIBs) possess high theoretical energy densities and are promising successors to lithium ion batteries. In this study, we present a novel MnO2@V2O5@C cathode design. We introduced a water-in-salt system into the battery, which effectively solved the safety problem. This battery offered the advantages of high performance, low weight, low cost, high flexibility and enhanced safety. Furthermore, it achieved a discharge platform of up to 2.6 V, a maximum discharge capacity of 457.4 mA h g−1, and a cycle life of 1000. The cathode was lightweight, weighing only 0.02 g, and the battery used fewer materials, making it less expensive. It could be arbitrarily folded, punctured and burned (1300 °C) without explosion, and it could be operated normally before complete destruction. Thus, aqueous CIBs exhibit high safety. These advantages make this new type of chloride-ion battery a potential candidate for applications in automotive, portable devices, aerospace and other fields, and it opens a new path for the development of batteries.

High-level safety is the essential precondition for the future large-scale applications of the high-energy storage systems. In terms of the lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, the low flash point and poor mechanical strength of the conventional polyolefin separator are the potential safety hazards to cause the fire and explosion in extreme environment. Herein, a thermotolerant and nonflammable hierarchical functional separator (Z-PMIA separator) is designed based on the poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) membrane and the in-situ formed Co-containing zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-L(Co) secondary nanostructures. Benefiting from the feature of “Aramid” fibers and the special secondary ZIF-L(Co) nanostructures, the Z-PMIA separator not only guarantees high mechanical strength (suffering from a tensile strength of 15 MPa and a puncture force of 0.95 N) and remarkable thermal stability (no dimensional shrinkage even at 200 °C) but also effectively suppresses the polysulfide shuttle and lithium dendrite growth. As a result, the Z-PMIA separator delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 1391.2 mAh g −1 and a discharge capacity of 961.1 mAh g −1 after 350 cycles at 0.2C, with a slow capacity attenuation of 0.033% per cycle. Even under the conditions of high sulfur loading (9.23 mg cm −2 ) and low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio (8 mL g −1 ) or when running at a high temperature (80 °C), the Z-PMIA separator still enables a high charging/discharging performance, highlighting its promising commercial prospect for future high-safety and high-performance energy storage systems.

Dual ion batteries, which have emerged as a novel energy storage device in recent years, are highly valued for their high operating voltage, safety, and environmental friendliness, attracting significant attention. However, the safety characteristics of these batteries are greatly reduced due to the high flammability of conventional carbonate-based electrolytes. The development of a non-flammable electrolyte with high safety and excellent reversible plating/stripping characteristics is crucial for the advancement of potassium (K) −based dual ion batteries. Compared to high concentration electrolytes, the use of low electrolyte concentration limits the capacity derived from anion intercalation into the graphite layers. In this work, a 3.75 M KFSI/TEP:DMC (2:1 v/v) electrolyte was configured using non-flammable triethyl phosphate (TEP) as the main solvent, dimethyl carbonate (DMC) as the co-solvent, and potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) as the salt. This electrolyte not only exhibits highly non-flammable properties but also demonstrates excellent plating/stripping reversibility in K||Al half batteries, achieving an average coulombic efficiency of ∼ 98.9 % over 1200 cycles. Furthermore, long-term reversibility tests conducted with K||K symmetric batteries indicate a cycle life exceeding 6000 h, which corresponds to more than 250 days of continuous operation. In conclusion, we assembled a K-based anode-free dual ion battery, with aluminum serving as the anode and graphite as the cathode, which exhibited an exceptional cyclic lifespan. At 0.2 A g −1 , the battery demostrated stable cycling for over 200 cycles, maintaining a capacity retention rate of 100 %. This research paves the way for the development of high-safety K-based anode-free dual ion batteries.

With the rapid evolution of electric vehicles, there is a growing demand for batteries with high energy and safety. Among various options, the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO)/phosphorus battery has emerged as one of the most promising candidates due to its appropriate lithiation potential and remarkable specific capacity. However, challenges related to high-voltage, polyphosphate dissolution, and phosphorus combustion safety issues persist in this system. Herein, we design a nonflammable electrolyte with a wide electrochemical window of over 5.8 V. It successfully mitigates the shuttling effect observed in phosphorus anodes, resulting in an impressive capacity retention of 80% over 600 cycles. The LNMO||P/C full cell delivers a stable capacity of 97.5 mAh g–1 over 200 cycles with an exceptional energy density of 350 Wh kg–1. These findings mark a significant step forward in the development of high-safety and high-performance phosphorus anode batteries, opening up exciting possibilities for their application in electric vehicles and beyond.

The practical application of sodium-ion hybrid capacitors is limited by their low energy densities resulted from the kinetics mismatch between cathodes and anodes, and the fire safety related to the flammable electrolyte-separator system. Hence, we report a rational design of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs, UiO-66) modified PVDF-HFP separator. High tensile strength and dimensional thermal stability of the separator reduce the risk of electrode short circuit caused by the separator deformation. MCC test demonstrates a reduction of 75% in peak heat release rate (pHRR), indicating an enhanced fire-resistant property of the separator. This is due to the transformation of UiO-66 into ZrO 2 accompanied by the consumption of oxygen and the formation of the barrier char that suppresses further heat release. Quasi-solid-state electrolyte prepared based on this separator presents an enhanced ionic conductivity of 2.44 mS cm −1 and Na-ion transference number of 0.55, which are related to the high porosity (>70%) and electrolyte uptake (~320%) of the separator. Moreover, the open metal sites of UiO-66 can capture PF 6 – and consequently liberate the Na + for faster migration, thus reducing the kinetics mismatch between cathodes and anodes. Such multifunctional separator enables the quasi-solid-state Na-ion hybrid capacitor to achieve high energy density (182 Wh kg −1 @31 W kg −1 ) and power density (5280 W kg −1 @22 Wh kg −1 ), as well as excellent cyclic stability (10,000 cycles @1000 mA g −1 ).

The boom of flexible and wearable electronic devices boosts the development of flexible batteries with high safety and stability. However, traditional lithium-ion batteries dominating portable energy storage devices are significantly restricted by their intrinsic safety hazards. Herein we report a solid-state battery based on a self-standing gelatin-based hydrogel electrolyte (GHE), whose high ionic conductivity, robust mechanical strength, and intimate contact with electrodes enable the Zn metal anode and LiMn2O4 cathode to reversibly and stably cycle. Benefiting from the superior stability towards water, flexibility of the GHE and well-designed cell structure, the solid-state full cells of Zn/GHE/LiMn2O4 can deliver a high specific capacity of 110.2 mA h g−1 and resist cutting, soaking in water, bending, twisting and crimping. The newly developed solid-state Zn metal battery with high safety and stability sheds light on the application of rechargeable batteries in flexible and wearable devices.

A large-size, bipolar-stacked and high-safety solid-state lithium battery with integrated electrolyte and cathode is fabricated conveniently via solvent-free UV-cure. Firstly, a series of new solid polymer electrolytes are synthesized through UV-cure, and exhibit a maximum conductivity of 1.29 × 10 −4 S cm −1 (60 °C), a wide electrochemical window (0–5.1 V) and excellent compatibility with Li. Secondly, solid-state LiFePO 4 /Li cell with integrated electrolyte and electrode is fabricated and delivers a high capacity of 113.3 mAh g −1 after the 100 th cycle, and the capacity retention is 90.2%. The outstanding cell performance is ascribed to the integrated electrolyte/cathode design which is beneficial for the interfacial impedance decreasing. Finally, a 5 cm × 8 cm size battery with integrated electrolyte/cathode is assembled conveniently, and it presents the 80.55% retention of discharge capacity at the 200 th cycle and high-safety. It can be well work under the conditions of bending, cutting, on the fire and even after nail penetration. Remarkably, the bipolar-stacked battery is also fabricated, and the open circuit voltage is as high as 6.33 V. Consequently, this work develops a series of new solid polymer electrolytes and proposes an advanced cell construction design for solid-state lithium batteries which is very suitable for the large-scale preparation.

The thermal safety of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is a major obstacle to expanding LIBs applications. High-safety separators with a thermal shutdown feature are considered the most promising and appealing thermal protection strategy for LIBs to avoid thermal runaway. Herein, a high-safety poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)/poly (ether ether ketone)/poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA/PEEK/EVA) composite separator is fabricated by dip-coating and thermally induced phase separation. Once the operating temperature exceeds 80 °C inadvertently (the thermal runaway onset temperature), the EVA layers of the EVA/PEEK/EVA separator are converted into barrier membranes to cut off ion transport and prevent battery reactions. Meanwhile, the PEEK substrate remains dimensionally stable even at temperatures up to 240 °C to avoid the dangers associated with thermal inertia after shutdown. Moreover, compared to the polyolefin separator (commercially available), the EVA/PEEK/EVA separator shows an increase of 42% and 77.1% in ionic conductivity and discharge capacity at the rate of 4C, respectively. Therefore, the EVA/PEEK/EVA separator can secure the LIBs without sacrificing electrochemical performance, and further expand the application of LIBs.

Functional liquid crystal polymers have attracted much attention as new all-solid-state polymer electrolytes due to their ability of orientation. In this paper, a hyperbranched star liquid crystal polymer (HSLCP) electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is developed for the first time. This type of HSLCP bears a hyperbranched poly(glycidol) (HPG) as core, poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) and poly (4-cyano-biphenyl methylmethacrylate) ((LC) x ) compose the block arms of the HSLCP. (LC) x segments, one part of the arms, are assisted to promote transmission of Li-ion via orientation and PCL segments are used to dissociate lithium salt and efficiently migrate charge carriers. The good self-standing all-solid-state polymer electrolyte film composed of HSLCP and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide (LiTFSI) can be formed by solution casting method. It is demonstrated that such a HSLCP exhibits good thermal stability (368°C), the HSLCP-based electrolyte shows high ionic conductivity (5.98 × 10 −5 S cm −1 at 30°C), outstanding ion transference number (0.63), and wide electrochemical window (5.12 V). In addition, LiFePO 4 /Li batteries employing the electrolyte deliver good cycling performance and rate capability. Simultaneously, the corresponding half-cell can still power a LED lamp at room temperature . Thus, this is a great progress for liquid crystal-based polymer electrolytes to be applied to high energy LIBs.

Safe and high-performance electrolytes are essential for the practical development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Here, we report a eutectogel electrolyte constructed by integrating a deep eutectic solvent (DES), polyacrylamide (PAAM), and the zwitterionic polymer poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]diethyl-(3-sulfonopropyl) (PMAEDS). The synergistic interplay of these components imparts the optimized PAAM 1 - co -PMAEDS 2 eutectogel with a wide electrochemical stability window (4.0 V), intrinsic non-flammability, and efficient ion transport—arising from the rich intermolecular interactions of the DES, the structural stability of PAAM, and the enhanced LiTFSI dissociation promoted by PMAEDS. When applied in Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 ||LiMn 2 O 4 full cells, the electrolyte enables a high specific capacity of 120.5 mAh g −1 with stable cycling over 260 cycles at 2C, while maintaining reliable operation at −10 °C. Moreover, the designed pouch cell demonstrates scalability and excellent safety under severe mechanical and thermal abuse. This work presents a simple and cost-effective eutectogel electrolyte strategy, offering a promising pathway toward next-generation high-safety LIBs.

Sodium-ion capacitors (SICs) have long been pursued as economically favorable alternatives to their well-developed lithium-ion counterparts. However, their commercialization suffers from the immature pre-sodiation technology in existence, primarily due to the increased cost and risk invoked by the use of highly reactive metallic sodium and sodium containing additives as sodium sources. Herein, we uncover a unique approach based on the use of prelithiated carbon as the anode for SICs. The prelithiated hard carbon anode with the preformed solid-electrolyte-interphase (SEI) layer can effectively compensate the large irreversible capacity loss and greatly improve the initial coulombic efficiency of SICs. Besides, the preformed Li-based SEI layer is effective in controlling the Na-ion intercalation behavior of the carbon anode, as confirmed by the reversible capacity that is mainly contributed by the extended slope region without the low-potential plateau region, thus avoiding the safety issues from Na metal plating. These features endowed by the pre-lithiation strategy enable us to use a slope region-dominated soft carbon anode for high-safety SICs with high capacity and superior rate capability. This work possesses far-reaching potential to implant the mature pre-lithiation technology into sodium-ion energy storage systems to resolve the scientific bottleneck from the immature pre-sodiation technology.

Commonly-used ether and carbonate electrolytes show distinct advantages in active lithium-metal anode and high-voltage cathode, respectively. While these complementary characteristics hold promise for energy-dense lithium metal batteries, such synergy cannot be realized solely through physical blending. Herein, a linear functionalized solvent, bis(2-methoxyethyl) carbonate (BMC), is conceived by intramolecularly hybridizing ethers and carbonates. The integration of the electron-donating ether group with the electron-withdrawing carbonate group can rationalizes the charge distribution, imparting BMC with notable oxidative/reductive stability and relatively weak solvation ability. Furthermore, BMC also offers advantages including the ability to slightly dissolve LiNO 3 , excellent thermostability and nonflammability. Consequently, the optimized BMC-based electrolyte, even with typical concentrations in the single solvent, demonstrates high-voltage tolerance (4.4 V) and impressive Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency (99.4%). Moreover, it fulfills practical lithium metal batteries with satisfactory cycling performance and exceptional tolerance towards thermal/mechanical abuse, showcasing its suitability for safe high-energy lithium metal batteries.
