Superior tribology property of zinc phosphate impregnated graphite block at high-temperature oxidative friction

Xu Yuxuan,Tu Chuanjun,Liu Yanli,Liu Ping,Chen Gang,Tan Jiao,Xiong Wei,He Yubo,Liang Shilin,Ma Qingchun

High-temperature friction performances of graphite blocks (GBs) and zinc phosphate impregnated graphite blocks (IGBs) were evaluated under various friction temperatures. The surface of IGB exhibited extremely lower average friction coefficient values, that was 0.007 at 400 °C and 0.008 at 450 °C, in comparison to that of GB (0.13 at 400 °C and 0.16 at 450 °C, respectively). The worn surface of IGB in the high-temperature friction test was smoother and more complete than that of GB. The wear under high temperature and load caused the transformation of zinc pyrophosphate to zinc metaphosphate and the formation of a continuous large-area boundary lubrication layer combined with graphite and metallic element on the wear surface. The superior tribology property of IGB could be attributed to the digestion of iron oxides by tribo-chemical reactions and passivation of the exposed dangling covalent bonds. Specifically, the layered structure generated on the IGB wear interface effectively decreased the adhesive forces and prevented the surface from serious damage.

Microstructure and high-temperature tribological properties of electro-jet mask printing (CFx)n/CaF2-ZrO2 interlaced coatings

Zhihui Zhang,Jianxin Deng,Shenghan Cao,Ran Wang,Jiaxing Wu,Yang Lu,Yichen Bao

The (CF x ) n /CaF 2 -ZrO 2 interlaced coating was prepared using electro-jet mask printing technology. The effects of CaF 2 content (0, 25, 50 wt%) on its microstructure, adhesion strength, and wear properties against 304 stainless steel balls at high temperatures (25, 200, 400 °C) were investigated. The results indicated that the interlaced structure of the coating helped prevent the loss of lubricant particles and reduced the actual contact area between the counterparts. The addition of CaF 2 reduced the surface roughness and porosity of the (CF x ) n coating and suppressed thermal weight loss and fatigue peeling of the coating. At 25 °C, the (CF x ) n -ZrO 2 interlaced coating showed the lowest friction coefficient of ∼ 0.13, although the brittle CaF 2 particles hindered lubrication. At 200 °C, the presence of CaF 2 reduced the wear rate of the friction pair. At 400 °C, the interlaced coating with 25 wt% CaF 2 showed the lowest friction coefficient of ∼ 0.29, and both the coating and counterpart had low wear rates. This improvement was primarily attributed to the brittle-to-ductile transition of CaF 2 at high temperatures and the formation of new lubricants. Adhesive wear, oxidative wear, and delamination were the predominant wear mechanisms.

Friction and wear performance of laser clad Mo modified Stellite 12 matrix coatings at elevated temperature

Gongjun Cui,Wenpeng Han,Wuchen Zhang,Junxia Li,Ziming Kou

The aim of this research is to enhance the tribological performance of Stellite 12 coatings at room temperature-1000 °C. To this end, Mo modified Stellite 12 coatings were prepared on the Inconel 718 alloy by laser cladding , and the Mo content was optimized. The effects of Mo on the phases, microstructure and tribological behavior of coatings were investigated. The hardness and tribological performance of coatings were enhanced by adding Mo. There was a threshold content of Mo concerning with tribological performance of Stellite 12 matrix coatings. The 12.0 wt% Mo modified Stellite 12 coating kept more outstanding tribological performance, which was due to the high hardness, in-situ synthesized solid lubricants , friction film and the net structure of complex carbides .

Tribological performance of WS2/PAI composite coating reinforced with carbon nanotubes-carbon fiber at high temperatures

Dingyuan Zhao,Sisi Liu,Jun He,Ziheng Zhao,Shuohui Yin

The carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were chemically grafted onto carbon fibers (CFs) to prepare a CNTs-CF multiscale reinforcement. The tungsten disulfide/polyamide-imide (WS 2 /PAI) composite coating, with PAI as the binder and WS 2 as the lubricant filler, was prepared. The enhancement mechanism of CNTs-CF on the high-temperature tribological performance of WS 2 /PAI composite coating was analyzed. The addition of CNTs-CF was found to increase the temperature of the 10% mass loss of PAI by 14.2°C, indicating its ability to improve the thermal stability of the coating. The hardness of the CNTs-CF-modified WS 2 /PAI composite coating was measured to be 17.9% higher than that of the WS 2 /PAI substrate. The incorporation of CNTs-CF significantly improved the tribological performance of the WS 2 /PAI composite coating. Particularly at 200°C, the friction coefficient and wear rate of CNTs-CF modified WS 2 /PAI composite coating were only 0.095 and 8.92 × 10 −5 mm 3 /(N·m), respectively, which decreased by about 70.3% and 62.2% compared to the WS 2 /PAI substrate. Further analysis revealed that CNTs-CF is firmly embedded within the WS 2 /PAI composite coating through the synergistic mechanism of mechanical interlocking and molecular adsorption. Furthermore, CNTs-CF formed a stable lubricating film, ensuring the excellent friction and wear performance of the coating. Highlights The CNTs-CF can mitigate the thermal degradation of PAI. The high-temperature wear resistance of the coating was noticeably improved. The problem of CF easily detaching from the coating was resolved. The main components of the transfer film were analyzed.

Microstructure and high-temperature tribological properties of chessboard-textured (CFx)n/CaF2/C–ZrO2/TiO2 lubricant-hard alternate coatings fabricated by electrospray mask in-situ forming technology

Zhihui Zhang,Jianxin Deng,Lingxuan Fan,Junyan Wang

The paper presents the fabrication of chessboard-structured (CF x ) n /CaF 2 /C–ZrO 2 /TiO 2 lubricant-hard alternate coatings by electrospray mask in-situ forming technique. The influence of the coating's structure and components on microstructure, film-substrate adhesion strength, and reciprocating wear performance were studied. The results showed that the chessboard structure of the hard coating had a high surface energy of 83.45 mJ/m 2 , which enhanced the adhesion of the lubricant coating. The addition of graphite (C) improved the uniformity, thermal stability, and lubrication of the (CF x ) n /CaF 2 lubricant coating. Within the 25–600 °C temperature range, the chessboard-textured (CF x ) n /CaF 2 /C–ZrO 2 /TiO 2 lubricant-hard alternate coating all exhibited low friction coefficients, which attributed to the synergistic effect between chessboard structure and coating material.

Effect of cobalt content on high-temperature tribological properties of TiC-Co coatings

Yaxiong Du,Hongfei Chen,Guang Yang,Bin Liu,Yanfeng Gao,Hongjie Luo

Titanium carbide based cermets are promising wear resistant coating materials used at elevated temperatures in hostile environment owing to their excellent mechanical, physical and chemical properties. In this work, TiC-Co composite coatings with different Co content, as well as a WC-17Co reference coating are prepared by plasma spraying and their wear resistances are investigated. The friction coefficients and wear rates tested by dry sliding friction at 600 °C are used to characterize the high-temperature wear resistance of the coatings. The phase and microstructure evolution of the coatings before and after friction test are evaluated to conclude the wear mechanisms of these coatings. The results show that as-prepared TiC-Co composite coatings are composed of TiC, Ti, α-Co, r-TiO 2 and CoO phases and Ti oxidizes to r-TiO 2 phase during friction test, which is resulted from decarburization and oxidation of TiC. Among all the coatings, TiC-15Co has the minimum friction coefficient and lowest wear rate. It is contributed to the balanced ratio and good bonding between Co-rich soft phases and Ti-rich hard phases. The wear mechanisms of TiC-Co composite coatings are abrasive wear for low Co content (<15 wt%) coatings and adhesion/fatigue wear for high Co content ones.

Effect of biomass-derived carbon on high-temperature tribological performance of nickel-based alloy composites

Xinkai Ding,Changtai Liu,Wenyang Huang,Yifan Zhou,Enzhu Hu,Kun Yu,Yong Xu,Kunhong Hu

Nickel-based alloy composites are high-temperature wear-resistant materials used in extreme environments such as nuclear reactors and aerospace engines. While offering excellent mechanical properties, their tribological performance under high temperatures requires significant enhancement. In this work, we present a sustainable approach utilizing biomass-derived onion-like carbon (OLC) to address this challenge. OLC was successfully synthesized through catalytic pyrolysis of rice husk ash (RHA) and incorporated into a nickel–chromium-molybdenum-titanium-aluminum alloy matrix via powder metallurgy, with different mass fractions (0-7 wt%). The composites were systematically evaluated using high-temperature micro-tribological tester, with post-test characterization performed by SEM/EDS and LSM. Results demonstrate that 3 wt% OLC represents an optimal concentration, enhancing hardness by 114 % and significantly improving interfacial bonding strength. During high-temperature friction, OLC particles facilitate pore-filling and interface optimization, subsequently forming both continuous carbon films and composite oxide layers (NiO, Cr 2 O 3 , Ni 3 C) that effectively isolate friction pairs. First-principles calculations reveal that OLC’s spherical nanostructure induces lower interfacial adhesion and reduced sliding energy barriers compared to conventional graphene. The combined experimental and theoretical approach establishes a comprehensive understanding of the multi-mode lubrication mechanism, highlighting OLC’s dual role in surface protection and wear-debris suppression. Our work provides valuable guidance for developing high-performance, sustainable nickel-based composites for demanding high-temperature applications.
