Enhancement of Photoluminescence in CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals with 1-Octanethiol by Light Illumination for Potential Emitting Applications

Rongrong Hu,Wenfang Peng,Lin Cheng,Qiaoyun Wu,Gaolei Dong,Pan Liang,Bobo Yang,Yuefeng Li,Jun Zou,Donghai Feng

Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are emerging for emitting applications due to their high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield and wide PL wavelength tunability. Here, the light-induced PL enhancement in complexes of CsPbBr3 NCs and 1-octanethiol (OT) molecules (refers to below as NC–OT complexes) is investigated. In comparison with that of as-grown CsPbBr3 NCs, the PL intensity of NC–OT complexes is lower before light illumination. While after ultraviolet light illumination, the PL performance of NC–OT complexes is improved in both air and nitrogen atmospheres. Compared with air atmospheres, anaerobic atmospheres are more effective at increasing the PL intensity because of eliminating photo-oxidation. The light illumination prevents the nonradiative process and enhances the radiative emission in NC–OT complexes, supported by transient PL and photobleaching measurements, due to better surface passivation through thiol–ene reactions. The light-induced PL enhancement in NC–OT complexes provides valuable information for the applications of perovskite nanomaterial-based emitting devices.

Regulation of Monomer Allocation and Surface Passivation via Dual Ligands for the Synthesis of NIR-IIc Ag2Se Quantum Dots

Zhen-Ya Liu,Wei Zhao,Li-Ming Chen,Fei Ding,An-An Liu,Dai-Wen Pang

Narrow bandgap silver selenide (Ag2Se) is a promising candidate for noninvasive in vivo imaging in the long-wavelength region of the second near-infrared window (NIR-IIc, 1700–2000 nm), yet precise control over its size remains challenging due to ineffective regulation of nucleation and growth, largely constrained by its extremely low solubility product. Here, we reveal a growth bottleneck in the Ag2Se quantum dots (QDs) synthesis arising from rapid monomer depletion during nucleation. The sole use of strongly binding thiol ligands further confines the system to a thermodynamically metastable size regime, hindering the continuous growth required for precise spectral tuning. By employing a dual-ligand strategy combining strongly binding thiol ligands with labile oleate ligands, we modulate monomer supersaturation and the dynamic adsorption–desorption equilibrium on the nanocrystal surface, thereby suppressing nucleation to preserve sufficient monomer for subsequent monomer diffusion-limited growth. This approach yields size-tunable Ag2Se QDs with emission peaks extending into the NIR-IIc window. Furthermore, the synergistic passivation by zinc oleate ligands significantly improves the size dispersity and colloidal stability of large-sized Ag2Se QDs. Our in-depth investigation not only addresses challenges in size control of QDs exhibiting nonclassical growth but also highlights the transformative potential of low-toxicity, NIR-IIc-emissive Ag2Se QDs for optoelectronics and noninvasive deep-tissue imaging.

Bright Red InP Quantum Dots via Mild Surface Etching with LiPF6

Kai-Zheng Song,Shan-Ze Li,Feng-Lei Jiang

Eco-friendly indium phosphide (InP) quantum dots (QDs) with excellent optical properties are highly demanded for advanced display and lighting technologies. This work demonstrated a mild postsynthetic treatment method to enhance the optical properties of InP cores by utilizing lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) to remove POx– species from the core surfaces at nucleation temperature. This method avoided the use of toxic and corrosive hydrofluoric acid. The effects of LiPF6 dosage and treatment duration on the optical properties of InP cores were systematically investigated. After LiPF6 treatment, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the InP cores increased dramatically from <1 to 21%, with the removal of POx– species confirmed by XPS and FTIR analyses. Furthermore, the impact of LiPF6 introduction prior to shell coating on the properties of core–shell QDs with ZnSeS/ZnS shells was investigated. The introduction of LiPF6 induced a controlled emission red shift (from 614 to 620 nm) while dramatically boosting the PLQY from 62 to 90%. The fabricated light-emitting diode (LED), employing InP(F)/ZnSeS/ZnS QDs as color converters, achieved a maximum power efficiency of 1.11 lm W–1 with CIE coordinates of (0.702, 0.293). This work provides an efficient approach to optimize InP-based QDs for high-performance optoelectronic applications.

Highly Efficient and Stable CdSe/CdS Quantum Dot–Polyurethane Acrylate Composite Fluorescent Antennas for Optical Wireless Communication

Xuting Chen,Linqi Chen,Yuan Jiang,Yijing Wang,Hongbing Li,Jingzhou Li,Xinjie Li,Zeyi Wang,Hongxing Dong,Long Zhang

Fluorescent antennas (FAs) serve as promising optical concentrators for optical wireless communication (OWC) by overcoming the Étendue limit. Quantum dots-polymer nanocomposites exhibit superior optical properties for FAs. However, the poor chemical affinity between the surface ligands of quantum dots (QDs) and the polar functional groups in polymer matrices reduces interfacial compatibility, triggering ligand desorption and interparticle aggregation during photopolymerization. These effects severely degrade the photoluminescence efficiency and long-term stability, thus limiting the practical application of polymer-based FAs. Herein, a high-performance nanocomposite is demonstrated by embedding ODPA-passivated CdSe/CdS QDs into a polyurethane acrylate (PUA) matrix through doctor-blade coating and photopolymerization. Molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations reveal that QDs improve interfacial compatibility with PUA matrix through hydrogen-bond crosslinking between surface ligands and PUA hard segments, along with alkyl chain-induced plasticization of soft segments. Optimizing the QD concentration results in nanocomposites with a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield of 99.15% and enhanced environmental stability. The sandwich-structured FA demonstrates a −3 dB bandwidth of 8.6 MHz, a 154 Mbps data rate using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. This work presents a readily processable nanocomposite system with high efficiency and stability, advancing OWC applications in terrestrial and underwater environments.

HgTe colloidal quantum dots based on diphenylphosphine precursor activation for infrared photodetectors

Zhezhe Wang,Liqing Yang,Shaorui Yuan,Bo Yao,Shupeng Cen,Libing Tang,Yude Wang

HgTe colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are promising for infrared detection due to their broad spectral response, high photosensitivity, and potential for low-cost fabrication. However, conventional synthesis methods struggle to achieve precise size control, narrow size distribution, high monodispersity, and tetrahedral morphology. In this work, we introduce diphenylphosphine (DPP) to enhance the reactivity of the telluride precursor, promoting uniform nucleation and allowing precise control over CQDs morphology, size, and monodispersity. A dual regulation strategy based on synthesis temperature and thiol ligand alkyl chain length is further employed to enable controllable growth of CQDs in both size and shape. The organic-inorganic heterojunction short-wave infrared photodetector constructed using HgTe CQDs layers obtained via this method and an organic hole transport layer of PEDOT:PSS exhibits a responsivity of 652 mA/W at 1650 nm and a detection rate of 7.88 × 10 11 Jones at room temperature. This work presents a novel, cost-effective, and scalable strategy for synthesizing HgTe CQDs, laying a solid foundation for the development and commercialization of high-performance infrared photodetectors.

Unlocking megawatt-peak-power laser emission with colloidal quantum dots

Yuting Wu,Hancheng Zhu,Zhigao Huang,Hao Zhang,Yinjuan Ren,Hua Shen,Yiming Wu,Yue Wang

Output power of a laser device critically defines the application prospects. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as auspicious laser media; however, the exclusively low-power emission obscures the practical deployment. Here, we resolve this challenge by designing an architecture of QD laser with unprecedented peak powers in megawatt regime. The achievement is enabled by integrating the QDs with exceptional gain metrics with a seed-amplifier laser structure. Transient spectroscopy and theoretical simulation reveal that the narrow emission linewidth and large biexciton binding energy of the QDs act synergistically to enable an enhanced gain performance with submonoexcitonic threshold and record high–saturated gain cross section. A Littman-Metcalf cavity is designed to deliver the continuously tunable laser emission, and the synchronous amplification reaches the megawatt output. The high-power QD laser exhibits high spatial coherence, linear polarization, and operational endurance, which has proved effective as the pump source for spectroscopic research.

Plasmon-enhanced colloidal silver telluride quantum dots for boosted near-infrared photodetection performance

Yueling Lai,Jingying Luo,Xianglong Zhao,Hao Chen,Qianqian Song,Kanghui Zheng,Xin Tong,Ruilin Wang,Yufeng Zhou

In the realm of imaging and optoelectronic devices, near-infrared (NIR) light has garnered significant attention due to its unique properties of deep tissue penetration and anti-interference capability. Among various NIR materials, silver telluride (Ag2Te) colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as promising candidates due to their low toxicity and broad absorption/emission range. However, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) and photostability of Ag2Te QDs are relatively low, which poses a considerable challenge to their practical application. We herein report a novel strategy to enhance their optical properties by leveraging the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of non-noble metallic Cu2−xS1−ySey nanoparticles (NPs). Experimental results demonstrate that the core@shell@shell Cu2−xE@SiO2@Ag2Te (E = Se, S) nanostructures (NSs) exhibit a remarkable fluorescence enhancement factor of up to 2.72, with the PL QY increasing from 9.52% to 14.46% and the fluorescence lifetime being significantly prolonged with respect to those of bare Ag2Te QDs. Furthermore, the optimized NS-based photodetectors show a 4.18-fold enhancement in responsivity compared to bare QD-based devices, highlighting the effectiveness of LSPR in optimizing carrier dynamics.

Proton shuttle-assisted triplet energy transfer

Wang Zhaolong,Zhu Jingyi,Wu Kaifeng

Electronic transition/motion coupled with proton transfer has a key role in natural and artificial energy conversion and storage materials. Previous examples include proton-coupled electron transfer and singlet energy transfer, but not triplet energy transfer. Here we report a mechanism termed proton shuttle-assisted triplet energy transfer. The system comprises ZnSe-based quantum dots surface anchored with phenol–pyridine dyadic acceptors. Ultrafast measurements and kinetic isotope effects establish that the photoexcitation of ZnSe leads to hole transfer from ZnSe to phenol, which is coupled with proton transfer from phenol to pyridine. A subsequent step of electron transfer from ZnSe to phenoxyl radical, coupled with back proton transfer from pyridinium, accomplishes a net process of spin-triplet migration from ZnSe to phenol–pyridine. Adding a strongly electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl substituent on pyridine can switch the sequence of proton-coupled electron and hole transfer steps. Compared with a methylated analogue acceptor lacking the shuttle, the assistance of proton shuttle substantially increases the energy transfer rate and efficiency.

Optically Switchable Full-Color Quantum Dots via Diarylethene Photoswitches for Smart Display and Security

Shuai Zhang,Kezhou Chen,Lin Xi,QingXin Luan,Jiayi Liu,Tiegen Liu,Lili Hou

Optically switchable functions are highly interesting for AI applications in smart displays, memory encryption, and neuromorphic computing. The use of molecular photoswitches to precisely modulate functionalities at the nanoscale, such as photoluminescence (PL), is essential for developing photoswitchable nanomaterials. However, it is challenging to achieve the universal regulation of full-color PL, particularly for the efficient optical modulation while maintaining both high PL quantum yield (PLQY) and effective photoswitchable states. Herein, we report a simple and efficient photoswitchable system achieved through the hybridization of quantum dots (QDs) and diarylethene (DAE) photoswitches. The PL intensity of the three primary colors (RGB) can be reversibly switched on and off using the same DAE upon exposure to specific light. Our design exhibits a maximum PLQY exceeding 90% in the on state while maintaining a PL on/off ratio approaching 100, which represents one of the current highest values. The excellent performance relies on the synergistic energy transfer mechanism of the Förster resonance energy transfer and triplet energy transfer. Our photoswitchable materials enable the straightforward preparation of RGB QDs@DAE films for applications in reversible patterned display and information encryption. The patterns and information can be erased and rewritten multiple times, offering flexible and reusable smart materials toward data storage, advanced display, and anti-counterfeiting technologies.

High-resolution array devices via insulating pattern definition layer transferred by UV-adhesive stamp

Xudong Jiang,Jie Li,Zunxian Yang,Yue Chen,Luxi Yuan,Wenxin Tang,Yuting Bai,Jiajie Hong,Benfang Liu,Zheyu Zhou,Runsen Yu,Wenxin Zhang,Shangwei Ye,Zhiqian Wei,Zhezhou Fang,Jinzhu Gao,Zhiyu Yuan,Shunchang Cheng,Yuhan Meng,Zhiqi Lin,Tailiang Guo,Zhenzhen Weng,Yongyi Chen

As display technologies mature, there is a growing demand for displays that offer superior visual quality. However, the development of high-resolution fabrication processes that are low-cost, simple, and scalable remains a significant challenge. Currently, established techniques like photolithography and inkjet printing face specific challenges. For instance, photolithography inevitably causes film damage during steps such as resist removal and etching, while inkjet printing is constrained by nozzle size and the coffee-ring effect, limiting further resolution improvements. This study employs an indirect transfer printing method, which utilizes a stamp fabricated via a two-step molding process. This stamp exhibits excellent solvent resistance, allowing it to define the pattern of the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) insulating layer and thereby indirectly achieve the patterning of the quantum dots. Additionally, a layer of PDMS is incorporated beneath the UV-adhesive stamp to enhance its overall elasticity, ensuring conformal contact with the target substrate during the transfer printing process. Compared to existing techniques for transferring insulating layers, our method significantly streamlines the fabrication workflow while maintaining high pattern fidelity and transfer success rates. Using this approach, we successfully fabricated green high-resolution devices with a resolution exceeding 6000 PPI and a maximum active area of 1 inch. This work provides a viable strategy and paves the way for high-resolution device fabrication.

Synthesis of Deep Blue InP Quantum Dots via HF Etching for Light-Emitting Diodes

Wenda Zhang,Xijian Duan,Lei Chen,Kai Wang,Yujie Song,Weigao Wang,Xiao Wei Sun

Red, green, and sky-blue InP quantum dots (QDs) are currently bridging the gap with CdSe-based QDs in terms of the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY). However, the sensitivity of InP QDs to water and oxygen, coupled with the increased specific surface area of smaller pure-blue and deep-blue QDs, leads to diminished PLQY, consequently restricting the fabrication of highly efficient blue InP quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). Here, high-temperature nucleation is utilized to produce highly crystalline InP cores, followed by low-temperature HF etching. This dual-treatment method simultaneously addresses surface phosphate defects and diminishes QD size, ultimately yielding pure-blue InP QDs with a PLQY of 73% at 466 nm and deep-blue InP QDs with a PLQY of 52% at 451 nm. Notably, by fine-tuning the HF dosage, 421 nm deep-blue InP QDs, representing the shortest wavelength to date, were successfully prepared. Additionally, enhancing carrier injection efficiency was achieved by replacing long-chain 1-dodecanethiol (DDT) ligands with short-chain 1-octanethiol (OT) ligands through ligand exchange. QLEDs exhibited an external quantum efficiency of 0.8% with an emission wavelength of 468 nm, providing a perspective for the fabrication of InP blue QLEDs via this etching technique.

A facile and universal ligand exchange strategy enables sequential surface functionalization of quantum dots for high quality in vivo imaging

Xue-Hui Shi,Zhendong Zhu,Changlin Shen,Ya Li,Zhuang Qian,Yonghao Wu,Huifeng Chen,Qing-Qing Ye,Chaojie Hu,Yifan Song,Lei Wang,Zhimou Yang,Wenjie Ren

Fluorescent semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) had the potential to revolutionize biological imaging, but their applications were limited by the difficulties of obtaining biocompatible and high fluorescent-quality QDs due to the difficulty in manipulating surface properties. Here, we explored a facile and effective ligand exchange approach, which enabled sequential surface functionalization and phase transfer of QDs while maintaining QDs fluorescence intensity, size and morphology. Nitrosonium tetrafluoroborate (NOBF 4 ) was employed to substitute for the original organic ligands attached to the QDs surface, stabilizing the QDs in polar and hydrophilic media N , N -dimethylformamide for 60 days without aggregation or precipitation. This method was applicable to a wide range of QDs of different compositions, fluorescence emission wavelengths and sizes. The obtained hydrophilic QDs can subsequently be further functionalized with various capping molecules, which can endow the different surface functionalization of QDs according to the modified molecules employed. Among these, Ag 2 Te QDs after NOBF 4 treatment could undergo sequential surface functionalization, which achieved high-quality in vivo fluorescent imaging. This work offered a versatile ligand exchange strategy for QDs surface functionalization and was a significant step toward controllably engineering the QDs surface properties.
