A calcium-doped boron nitride (Ca-BN) aerogel was synthesized by introducing Ca into crystal structure of BN building blocks.
The aerogels exhibited superior high-temperature stability and could resist the burning of butane flame (~1300 °C) in air atmosphere.
Ca-BN aerogel, together with Al foil, can effectively hide thermal target at high temperature up to 1300 °C.

High-temperature strain measurement above 1300 °C remains challenging because conventional thin-film strain gauges suffer from oxidation, resistance drift, and long-term instability. Herein, a Pt-Ir10 wire-wound strain gauge was fabricated using a self-developed winding apparatus, and the strain-sensing performance was systematically characterized from room temperature to 1300 °C. The sensor exhibited a room-temperature gauge factor of 2.12 and maintained a clear dynamic strain response at 1300 °C. A 5 h dwell test at 1300 °C showed an average resistance drift rate of 0.681%/h, and a continuous cyclic loading–unloading test at 1300 °C for approximately 7 h (about 8000 cycles) was conducted without signal interruption or sensing failure. Under high-temperature conditions, the average gauge factor at 1300 °C was 1.01. In addition, the influence of grid number on high-temperature sensitivity was investigated. Under the geometric parameters and fabrication process adopted in this work, the five-grid structure exhibited the highest average gauge factor among the investigated configurations. These results demonstrate the feasibility of the Pt-Ir10 wire-wound strain gauge for strain measurement in extreme high-temperature environments.

Lightweight ablation–resistant materials prepared by organic–inorganic hybridization are of great importance for aerospace thermal protection materials. The organic–inorganic hybrid Phenolic Resin (PR)/SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 composite aerogels (PSA) were fabricated through sol–gel. The PSA composite aerogels showed fascinating properties, resulting in high specific surface (517.07–731.65 m 2 /g), low density (0.104–0.139 g/cm 3 ), and low thermal conductivity (0.032–0.043 W/(m·K)). Especially, the PSA composite aerogels exhibited an ultra–high specific surface (285.07 m 2 /g), when the heat treatment was at 1300 °C in the Ar atmosphere for 5 h. The carbon fiber reinforced PSA aerogels (PSA/CF) indicated a low density (0.212–0.240 g/cm 3 ), low thermal conductivity (0.067–0.0717 W/(m·K)), high compressive strength (2.64–5.20 MPa). The PSA/CF composites exhibited effective thermal insulation when exposed to a 1300 °C butane torch for 60 s, with the back surface temperature at the center point ranging from 152.1 to 167.0 °C. The PSA/CF composites are promising for ablation–resistant thermal insulation, high–temperature resistance, and thermal protection applications.

Advanced ceramic aerogel materials with a performance combining sufficient mechanical robustness and splendid high-temperature resistance are urgently needed as thermal insulators in harsh environments. However, the practical applications of ceramic aerogel materials are always limited by poor mechanical performance and degradation under thermal shock. Here, we report the facile creation of lamellar multiarch structured ceramic nanofibrous aerogels that are simultaneously ultrastrong, superelastic, and high temperature resistant by combining ZrO2–Al2O3 nanofibers with Al(H2PO4)3 matrices. The resulting ZrO2–Al2O3 nanofibrous aerogels exhibit the integrated properties of rapid recovery from a strain of 90%, high compression strength of more than 1100 kPa (at a strain of 90%), high fatigue resistance, and temperature-invariant superelasticity. Moreover, the all-ceramic component feature also provides the ceramic nanofibrous aerogels with high-temperature resistance up to 1300 °C and thermal insulation performance with low thermal conductivity (0.0322 W m–1 K–1). These superior performances make the ceramic aerogels ideal for high-temperature thermal insulation materials in extreme conditions.

Exploring new materials with exceptional calcium-magnesium-alumina-silicates (CMAS) corrosion resistance is a pivotal research hotspot in advancing protective coatings for gas turbine engines. In this work, the CMAS corrosion behaviour and degradation mechanism of a newly developed high-entropy (La 0.25 Sm 0.25 Gd 0.25 Ho 0.25 )AlO 3 ceramic were systematically investigated at 1300°C with exposure durations of 4, 25, 50, and 100 h. The unique combination of multiple rare earth and Al compositions in (La 0.25 Sm 0.25 Gd 0.25 Ho 0.25 )AlO 3 ceramic enables simultaneous regulation of both the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the corrosion process: a low apatite formation threshold (governed by thermodynamics) and accelerated crystallization of reaction products (governed by kinetics). These factors collectively accelerate the reduction of CMAS corrosion reactivity and the formation of dense protective product layers. Consequently, after 100 h of CMAS exposure, the reaction layer thickness is effectively limited to only 66.4±10.2 μm, smaller than that of single-RE-principle REAlO 3 . This study reveals that (La 0.25 Sm 0.25 Gd 0.25 Ho 0.25 )AlO 3 represents a highly promising candidate for protective coatings applications, while simultaneously highlighting a composition design strategy for developing advanced anti-CMAS materials.

Elastic and compressible 3D nanomaterials comprising polymers, carbon, and metals have been prepared quantitatively in different formats. However, creating flexible and elastic ceramic aerogels with high thermal stability remains a significant challenge. In this study, sols composed of highly condensed inorganic molecular chains can be used to prepare ceramic nanofiber aerogels without adding polymers. This strategy prevents many pore defects caused by the thermal decomposition of polymers during ceramization and avoids the stress concentration generated by pore defects, which could lead to irreversible structural damage to the ceramic nanofiber aerogels under external forces. The synthesized ceramic nanofiber aerogel possesses temperature-invariant superelasticity (up to 1300 °C) and fatigue resistance to thousands of compressions with a thermal conductivity of only 0.028 W m −1 k −1 . The successful synthesis of such aerogels is expected to provide a foundation for designing flexible and elastic ceramic aerogels with structural adaptability and scalability.

The effect of Sc 2 O 3 content on the corrosion behaviors of x Sc 2 O 3 -3.5Y 2 O 3 co-doped ZrO 2 (ScYSZ, x = 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5 mol.%) in calcium-magnesium-alumino-silicate (CMAS) at 1300 °C was investigated in this paper. It is shown that the ScYSZ ceramic exhibits better resistance to molten CMAS attack when doping with more Sc 2 O 3 . The CMAS penetration depth in the ScYSZ ceramic decreases with increasing Sc 2 O 3 . It is about 18 µm of CMAS penetrated depth in the 6.5Sc3.5YSZ after corrosion for 4 h at 1300 °C, including an 11 µm and 7 µm for the reaction-reprecipitation and grain-boundary infiltration layers, respectively. High thermochemical stability and weak reactivity of the ScYSZ to the glassy CMAS melt are beneficial to enhance the high temperature corrosion resistance, attributing to the low solubility in molten CMAS and the weak affinity to Ca 2+ for small ionic radius Sc 3+ . The mechanism of enhancing the resistance to CMAS is discussed.

Silica aerogel is a typical nanoporous material exhibiting excellent thermal insulation property, and its nanostructure change at high temperature has attracted extensive attention. However, there is a lack of real-time research on the nanostructure evolution of silica aerogel under rapid heating. Here, silica aerogel was rapidly heated and imaged via an in-situ heating TEM to characterize the nanostructure evolution of from 600 °C to 1300 °C. After rapid heating at different temperatures, the silica aerogels were characterized by SEM, BET, TG-DSC, XRD and FT-IR. The nanostructure evolution of the aerogels can be divided into three temperature stages and experimental strategies for inhibiting aerogel shrinkage at high temperature can be provided. In stage Ⅰ (600 °C–1000 °C), the shrinkage of the silica aerogels occurred during the initial time of the heating process (within 2 h), and then the structure of silica aerogel became stable. The shrinkage of silica aerogels is primarily caused by the fusion of secondary particles, and increasing the secondary silica aerogel particle size may contribute to reducing the aerogel shrinkage. In stage Ⅱ (1100 °C), the aerogel shrinkage can be observed all the time with the heating process continues, and finally closed to the dense state. The shrinkage of silica aerogels is caused by the fusion of secondary particles and the macropore collapse, increasing the particle size and reducing the macropore content may slow down aerogel shrinkage. In stage Ⅲ (1200 °C–1300 °C), the aerogel will shrink rapidly and reach a dense state in a very short time (within 0.5 h). The shrinkage of silica aerogels is caused by the rapid pore collapse and the rapid fusion and shrinkage of the secondary particles of the aerogel, and pure silica aerogels cannot be used at this temperature.

The inherent brittleness of silica aerogels has hindered their application in thermal protection systems. To overcome this limitation, we developed a silica/polyimide composite aerogel with a bio-inspired “pomegranate-like” structure through in situ gelation. The strategic integration of polyimide nanofibers into the silica matrix created an interlocking network that immobilized silica particles, effectively resolving the mechanical fragility. By modulating the polyimide precursor (polyamic acid) concentration to 0.08 g/cm3through polyimide nanofiber reinforcement, the compressive strength reached 2.86 MPa—12 times greater than that of unmodified silica aerogel. The material demonstrated multifunctional performance: exceptional flame resistance (withstanding 1300 °C flame for 20 min with self-extinguishing behavior), high hydrophobicity (123° water contact angle), and ultralow thermal conductivity (0.035 W/(m·K)). This synergistic combination of tunable mechanics, thermal stability, and insulation properties positions the composite as an advanced solution for next-generation thermal protection materials.

HighlightsWhat are the main findings?•The dense double reaction layer of anorthite–spinel exhibits a positive effect on inhibiting the infiltration of calcium–magnesium–aluminum-silicate.•The thickness of the reaction layer increases with reaction time, while the growth rate rapidly decreases.•More Gd2O3doping enhances the outward diffusion of Gd3+and promotes the crystallization of the CMAS and apatite phases.•The inward infiltration of CMAS and outward diffusion of Al3+and Gd3+along the grain boundaries of the anorthite and/or spinel phases thicken the reaction layers. What are the implications of the main findings?•They clarify the reaction mechanism between Al2O3-based ceramics and CMAS in a high-temperature environment.•Doping with rare-earth Gd2O3can serve as an effective strategy for enhancing the CMAS corrosion resistance of Al2O3-based ceramics.•This study provides valuable reference guidance for the compositional design and research development of CMAS corrosion-resistant materials. The exploration of new materials with stable molten calcium–magnesium–aluminum-silicate (CMAS) resistance at elevated temperatures is of great significance to the development of advanced aero-engines. In the present study, Al2O3−xGd2O3(x = 5, 10, 20, 30 mol.%) ceramic samples were prepared by the high-temperature solid-state synthesis method. The thermochemical reaction behavior, reaction products, and growth kinetics of the reaction layer for the ceramics with molten CMAS at 1300 °C were investigated. The results reveal that the primary reaction products between Al2O3−xGd2O3ceramics and molten CMAS are anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8), gehlenite (Ca2Al(AlSi)O7), spinel (MgAl2O4), and Gd-apatite (Ca2Gd8(SiO4)6O2). In the initial reaction stage, a dense double-layer reaction layer composed of anorthite and spinel is formed at the ceramic/CMAS interface, while its growth rate decreases with increasing reaction time. Increasing the Gd2O3doping content inhibits the growth of the reaction layer and enhances the CMAS penetration resistance of Al2O3−xGd2O3ceramics. The mechanism is discussed systematically.
