Regulation of surface ligands in hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite quantum dots (HOIP QDs) is key to enhancing their optoelectronic properties. However, achieving both high photoluminescence (PL) and long-term stability in chiral HOIP QDs remains challenging. Here, we report the use of chiral anthraquinone derivatives (AQ) as surface ligands, replacing conventional long-chain alkyl ligands, to construct two potassium-doped chiral QDs, (R)AQ-QDs and (S)AQ-QDs. These QDs exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 98.74 and 97.68%, respectively, along with notable stability. Optical characterization indicates an efficient chirality transfer from the organic ligands to the K0.23MA0.77PbBr3 lattice. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy reveal reduced surface trap states, as evidenced by stronger ligand binding and prolonged carrier lifetimes. A white-light-emitting diode (LED) fabricated using the AQ-QDs shows a color rendering index (CRI) of 65.1 and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6169 K. The reported work highlights the potential of chiral ligand engineering in improving PL efficiency and stability in perovskite QDs.

A novel small organic molecule namely N,N’-bis(2-anthraquinone)-dihydrophenazine (DAQ-DPZ, 270 mAh/g) with n-p-n molecular heterojunction configuration is designed as the bipolar electrode material for Li-dual-ion batteries. To delay the dissolution for small-molecule organic electrodes, DAQ-DPZ is further coated by a protective carbon layer (DAQ-DPZ@C) through the process called surface self-carbonization. As expected, the resulting DAQ-DPZ@C can show the peak discharge capacity of 269 mAh/g and high median potential of 2.62 V in 1.6–4.4 V (vs. Li + /Li), corresponding to the peak energy density of 704 Wh kg −1 in Li-dual-ion half cells. Furthermore, DAQ-DPZ@C in the symmetric Li-dual-ion batteries can deliver the peak discharge capacity of 88 mAh/g cathode and the peak energy density of 113 Wh kg -1 cathode , stably running for over 5000 cycles. To the best of our knowledge, these results are the top ones for small-molecule organic bipolar electrodes in the symmetric Li-dual-ion batteries.

Visible-light-driven upgrading of biomass and its derivatives into value-added chemicals under mild reaction conditions is an economical and sustainable strategy for biomass valorization. In this contribution, industrially-accessible anthraquinone and its derivatives (AQs) have been developed as efficient metal-free photocatalysts for the photo-oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Especially, a quantitative furans selectivity containing 86.0 % of 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) and 13.6 % of 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) was implemented at HMF conversion of 88.8 % over 2,6-dibromoanthraquinone (2,6-DB-AQ) catalyst under visible light illumination. In addition, the homogeneous 2,6-DB-AQ catalyst can be readily separated and recycled from the reaction mixture by a “water-assisted” precipitate method. Photophysical characterizations indicated that the introduction of bromine substituents on AQ enhances its visible light absorption ability, decrease its band gap energy and enables the catalyst with a more stable photoexcitation state. It has also been demonstrated that the lower photoexcitation energy of O 2 over 2,6-DB-AQ endowed the catalyst with better capacity for the activation of O 2 than that of AQ. These contributions should be in charge of the excellent catalytic activity of 2,6-DB-AQ for the photo-oxidation of HMF. This work demonstrates an efficient and recyclable organo-photocatalyst for the visible-light-mediated valorization of biomass-derived alcohols and aldehydes to value-added chemicals.

Mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) is considered a harmful neurotoxin, and real-time monitoring of Hg 2+ concentrations in environmental and biological samples is critical. Fluorescent probes are a rapidly emerging visualization tool owing to their simple design and good selectivity. Herein, a novel fluorescence (FL) probe 2-(4-((6-((quinolin-8-yloxy)methyl)pyridin-2-yl)methyl)piperazin-1-yl)anthracene-9,10-dione ( QPPA ) is designed using piperazine as a linker between the anthraquinone group, which serves as a fluorophore, and N 4 O as the Hg 2+ ligand. The probe exhibits FL “turn-on” sensing of Hg 2+ because the complex inhibits the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process. Moreover, QPPA can overcome the invasion by other possible cations, resulting in a clear color change from orange to colorless with the addition Hg 2+ . The chelation of QPPA with Hg 2+ in a 1:1 ratio. Subsequently, the theoretically determined binding sites of the ligand to Hg 2+ are validated through 1 H NMR titration. The in situ QPPA –Hg 2+ complex can be subjected to Hg 2+ extraction following the introduction of S 2− owing to its robust binding capacity. The exceptional limit of detection values for Hg 2+ and S 2− are obtained as 63.0 and 79.1 nM (S/N = 3), respectively. Moreover, QPPA can display bright red FL in the presence of Hg 2+ in different biological specimens such as HeLa cells, zebrafish, onion root tip tissues, and water flea Daphnia carinata , further providing an effective strategy for environmental monitoring and bioimaging of Hg 2+ in living organisms.
