3D Printing of Thermo-Sensitive Drugs

Sadikalmahdi Abdella,Souha H. Youssef,Franklin Afinjuomo,Yunmei Song,Paris Fouladian,Richard Upton,Sanjay Garg

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is among the rapidly evolving technologies with applications in many sectors. The pharmaceutical industry is no exception, and the approval of the first 3D-printed tablet (Spiratam®) marked a revolution in the field. Several studies reported the fabrication of different dosage forms using a range of 3D printing techniques. Thermosensitive drugs compose a considerable segment of available medications in the market requiring strict temperature control during processing to ensure their efficacy and safety. Heating involved in some of the 3D printing technologies raises concerns regarding the feasibility of the techniques for printing thermolabile drugs. Studies reported that semi-solid extrusion (SSE) is the commonly used printing technique to fabricate thermosensitive drugs. Digital light processing (DLP), binder jetting (BJ), and stereolithography (SLA) can also be used for the fabrication of thermosensitive drugs as they do not involve heating elements. Nonetheless, degradation of some drugs by light source used in the techniques was reported. Interestingly, fused deposition modelling (FDM) coupled with filling techniques offered protection against thermal degradation. Concepts such as selection of low melting point polymers, adjustment of printing parameters, and coupling of more than one printing technique were exploited in printing thermosensitive drugs. This systematic review presents challenges, 3DP procedures, and future directions of 3D printing of thermo-sensitive formulations.Keywords:3D printing;thermolabile;thermosensitive;FDM;SSE;SLA;DLP

Facile Access to Highly Efficient 3D Printing Using Robust Self-Healing CDs/Polymer Hybrids

Jiang Zhai,Su-Yu Liu,Qing Li,Chang Liu,Xiao-Qing Yu,Guo-Xing Li,Su Chen

3D printing efficiency, as a key indicator of additive manufacturing technology, directly affects its competitiveness in rapid prototyping, small batch production, and even large-scale industrial applications. Compared with traditional manufacturing methods, the high efficiency of 3D printing is often considered a bottleneck, hindering its application across various fields. Herein, a versatile and efficient strategy is proposed, namely, the dimensional reduction printing (DRP) process, to break the obstacle of high efficiency of 3D printing. Specifically, the self-healing CDs/PMMA nanocomposites were constructed via introducing carbon dots (CDs) synthesized by microfluidics into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) materials. Under the assistance of abundant hydrogen bonding and the entanglement of polymer chains, the fabricated CDs/PMMA nanocomposites exhibited outstanding self-healing properties, which can be utilized as ideal printing inks to achieve a highly efficient 3D printing process through assembling the printed simple 1D and 2D components into complex 3D models. We firmly believe that the DRP strategy opens up an idea for the design of a 3D printing process and points out the direction for the meaningful application of 3D printing technologies.

Electro-Assisted 3D Printing Multi-Layer PVDF/CaCl2 Composite Films and Sensors

Andong Wang,Jianhua Liu,Chenkang Shao,Youming Zhang,Caifeng Chen

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films are widely used in sensors for their wide response frequency, good flexibility, low acoustic impedance, and chemical stability. In this work, PVDF/CaCl2piezoelectric films were prepared by an electro-assisted 3D printing method and used to form a multi-layer composite film sensor. The study found that the addition of CaCl2can effectively increase theβ-phase content in the PVDF film and improve the piezoelectric and dielectric properties of the PVDF composite film sensors. When the content of CaCl2is 0.15 wt.%, theβ-phase content of the PVDF/CaCl2composite film can reach the highest value of up to 48.47%, and the output voltage response of the sensor is 0.62 V at an input frequency of 10 Hz, 10 V voltage. The output voltage of PVDF composite film sensor with two and three layers is 1.306 and 1.693 times that of a single layer, respectively. The sensitivity of the multi-layer sensors has also been greatly improved.Keywords:3D printing;film;composite;sensor

Tailor-made 3D printing TPU/PLA composites for damping and energy absorption

Ruichao Zu,Wenzheng Chen,Yicang Huang,Yujie Chen,Chengzhen Du,Qunfu Fan,Hua Li,Hezhou Liu

Commercially available thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) materials for 3D printing often exhibit inadequate damping properties, limiting their application in damping scenarios. However, 3D printing TPU filaments specifically engineered for enhanced damping performance frequently lack sufficient stiffness, causing printing continuity issues. To address these challenges, this study investigates the rational design of TPU composites by regulating TPU molecular structure and incorporating polylactic acid (PLA) to enhance both damping performance and stiffness. The results reveal that a prepolymer curing coefficient of 2.0, combined with a chain extender ratio of Dimethyl thio-toluene diamine (DMTDA) to 1,4-Butanediol (BDO) at 5:5, optimizes the damping and mechanical properties of the TPU material. Furthermore, by incorporating 30 wt% PLA particles into the TPU matrix, the obtained TPU7/PLA3 composite filament has excellent printability and admirable damping properties with a peak damping value of 0.60 around room temperature and an effective damping temperature range exceeding 100 °C. A lattice structure resembling Kelvin foam was successfully fabricated using the TPU/PLA filaments, demonstrating superior damping performance compared to commercial TPU filaments and underscoring its potential for energy absorption applications.

Heat Transfer Performance of 3D-Printed Aluminium Flat-Plate Oscillating Heat Pipes for the Thermal Management of LEDs

Chao Chang,Yaoguang Yang,Lilin Pei,Zhaoyang Han,Xiu Xiao,Yulong Ji

With the rapid development of electronic technologies towards high integration, high power and miniaturization, thermal management has become an increasingly important issue to guarantee the reliability and service life of electronic devices. The oscillating heat pipe (OHP), which was governed by thermally excited oscillating motion, was considered as a promising technology to dissipate high-density heat and had excellent application prospects in many important industrial processes. A flat-plate OHP, however, was fabricated by traditional welding methods, which were difficult and inefficient, resulting in increasing the cost and wasting the production time. In this work, we adopted a new metal 3D printing technology to develop an aluminum flat-plate OHP, which made it facile to build complex inner channels with high-precision molding at one time. AlSi10Mg powders, as raw materials, were selectively melted and solidified to form the container of the flat-plate OHP. The sintered inner surface presented excellent wettability to the working fluid, which facilitated the evaporation of the working fluid. Acetone was chosen as the working fluid, and the filling ratios with a range of 40–70% were loaded into the flat-plate oscillating heat pipe to analyze its effect on heat transfer performance. It was found that the 3D-printed flat-plate OHP with a 60% filling ratio had a better heat transfer performance and a lower thermal resistance, and it was able to work properly in both vertical and horizontal operation modes. The 3D-printed flat-plate OHP had been successfully applied for the thermal management of high-power LEDs, and the results showed that the temperature of LEDs was maintained within 60 °C, and its service life was prolonged.Keywords:3D printing;oscillating heat pipe;thermal resistance;heat transfer performance

3D-Printed Filters for Efficient Heavy Metal Removal from Water Using PLA@CS/HAP Composites

Yisu Wang,Yan Wang,Shuai Qiu,Chongyang Wang,Hong Zhang,Jing Guo,Shengfa Wang,Huixia Ma

Chitosan/Hydroxyapatite composites, enriched with relatively active -NH2and -OH groups, have emerged as promising adsorbents for heavy metal removal. In this study, we harnessed the potential of CS/HAP composites by developing monolithic PLA@CS/HAP filters utilizing 3D printing and freeze-drying techniques. These filters possess both macroscopic and microscopic porous structures, endowing them with exceptional capabilities for removing heavy metals from water. The adsorption properties of CS/HAP composites were explored by varying the dosage, duration, and initial concentrations of copper ions. The maximum adsorption capacity for Cu2+was determined to be approximately 119+/−1 mg/g at the natural pH and 298 K. Notably, the monolithic PLA@CS/HAP filters demonstrated remarkable efficiency in the removal of copper ions, with 90% of copper ions effectively removed within a mere 2-h period in a cyclic adsorption experiment. Furthermore, the PLA@CS/HAP filters exhibited a robust dynamic Cu2+removal capacity (80.8% or even better in less than 35 min) in a dynamic adsorption experiment. Importantly, all materials employed in this study were environmentally friendly. In summary, the PLA@CS/HAP filter offers advantages such as ease of preparation, eco-friendliness, versatility, and broad applicability in diverse wastewater treatment scenarios, thereby presenting a significant potential for practical implementation.Keywords:chitosan;hydroxyapatite;3D printing;adsorption

Excellent microwave absorption property of 3D printed SiCN matrix metamaterial

Jundi Hu,Kun Liu,Zhuopeng Li,Yanhui Liu,Chao Ma,Daoyang Han,Hailong Wang,Rui Zhang,Gang Shao

The combination of 3D printing , polymer derived ceramics, and electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption metamaterials is particularly useful for spacecraft stealth in extreme environments and is gradually gaining significant interest. While the 3D printing of SiOC has been extensively researched, the high temperature stability and mechanical performance of SiOC are not as favorable as SiCN. However, it remains challenging to prepare SiCN metamaterials with both high mechanical and microwave absorption properties by 3D printing. Herein, we demonstrate a SiCN EMW absorption metamaterial with high mechanical properties using digital light processing 3D printing, which achieves a minimum reflection loss of −31.01 dB (99.9 % absorption), and the widest effective absorption bandwidth covers the entire X-band from 8.2 to 12.4 GHz. And the EMW absorption performance can be adjusted based on the size of the unit structure.

Zixiang Weng,Jianlei Wang,T. Senthil,Lixin Wu

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) nanocomposites with organic modified montmorillonite (OMMT) were prepared by melt intercalation. ABS nanocomposite filaments for fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing were produced by a single screw extruder and printed by a commercial FDM 3D printer. The 3D printed samples were evaluated by tensile, flexural, thermal expansion and dynamic mechanical tests. The structure of nanocomposites were analyzed by TEM and low angle XRD . Results showed that the addition of 5   wt% OMMT improved the tensile strength of 3D printed ABS samples by 43% while the tensile strength of injection moulding ABS samples were improved by 28.9%. It was found that the addition of OMMT significantly increased the tensile modulus , flexural strength , flexural modulus and dynamic mechanical storage modulus, and decreased the linear thermal expansion ratio and the weight loss of TGA . These novel ABS nanocomposites with better mechanical and thermal properties can be promising materials used in FDM 3D printing.

Thermal-responsive soil-hydrogel composite for additive construction

Haidong Zhuang,Zhenbang Guo,Yuanwang Lan,Cristina Ruiz-Agudo,Fazhou Wang,Helmut Cölfen,Zhengyao Qu

To improve the formability and bonding strength of 3D printing soil, a temperature-stimulating responsive intelligent soil-hydrogel 3D printing formula was innovatively developed by combining soil and gelatin. Varied soil-gelatin composites, featuring different gelatin content by weight of soil (0 %, 0.5 %, 1 %, and 1.5 %), were prepared and cured at 5 °C to facilitate the crosslinking of gelatin. An array of tests, including rheological assessments, compressive tests, and scanning electron microscopy analysis. Were conducted to thoroughly characterize the performance of gelatin-soil composites for 3D printing. Our findings unveiled that, following the cross-linking of gelatin at 5 °C, the gelatin-soil composites exhibited superior formability and bond strength compared to the reference. Furthermore, the soil-gelatin composites demonstrated not only comparable compressive strength to the reference but also enhanced interlayer bond strength. This innovative soil-hydrogel 3D printing formula, combining the versatility of soil and the responsive characteristics of gelatin, presents a promising avenue for advancing the capabilities of 3D printed soil.

3D printing of all-regenerated cellulose material with truly 3D configuration: The critical role of cellulose microfiber

Rui Yuan,Kai Wu,Qiang Fu

Direct ink writing, as a prospective three-dimensional (3D) printing technique, opens opportunities for offering high freedom to process cellulose into complex shapes. Current challenges are the accomplishment of dimensional accuracy of printed object and its truly 3D configuration, which put stringent requirements to the ink rheology that should be easily flowable under a suitable shear force while can rapidly recover to solid state after the force is removed. In this study, benefiting from the exquisite regulation of residual cellulose microfiber in a dissolved cellulose solution, a remarkable ink with excellent thixotropic property is prepared, which elaborately balance the traditional rheology tradeoff (extrudability and self-supporting) upon the formation of interconnected microfiber network. As a result, the optimized cellulose ink allows the printed object to successfully display arbitrary and truly 3D configurations, such as anatomical heart, ear, rabbit, lamp, and cup, and exhibit fine microstructure with a resolution of 250 μm.

3D Printing of Ultrathin MXene toward Tough and Thermally Resistant Nanocomposites

Yuewei Li,Ranjith Kumar Kankala,Ai-Zheng Chen,Shi-Bin Wang

Liquid crystal display (LCD)-based 3D printing, a facile and cost-effective manufacturing technique, is often applied when fabricating objects with porcelain structures using photosensitive resins (PSRs). Currently, 3D printed constructions are typically used as models for demonstration purposes rather than industrial applications because of their poor performance. In this study, we prepared nanocomposites by incorporating Ti3C2MXene nanosheets to enhance the overall characteristics of a PSR, including mechanical properties and thermal resistance. Notably, the designed nanocomposites showed optimum performance at an MXene loading of 0.5%w/w. The mechanical properties of the designed nanocomposites confirmed the enhanced ultimate tensile and flexural strengths (by 32.1% and 42.7%, respectively), at 0.5%w/wMXene loading. Moreover, the incorporated MXene presented no substantial influence on the toughness of the PSR. The glass transition and thermal degradation temperatures at 5% weight loss increased by 7.4 and 10.6 °C, respectively, resulting predominantly from the hydrogen bonding between the PSR and MXene. Together, the experimental results indicate that the designed PSR/MXene nanocomposites are expected to replace pristine resins for LCD printing in various practical applications.Keywords:3D printing;photosensitive resin;mechanical property;thermal resistance

Fabrication and Thermal Performance of a Polymer-Based Flexible Oscillating Heat Pipe via 3D Printing Technology

Zhaoyang Han,Chao Chang

As flexible electronic technologies rapidly developed with a requirement for multifunction, miniaturization, and high power density, effective thermal management has become an increasingly important issue. The oscillating heat pipe, as a promising technology, was used to dissipate high heat fluxes and had a wide range of applications. In this paper, we reported the fabrication and heat transfer performance evaluation of a polymer-based flexible oscillating heat pipe (FOHP) prepared using 3D printing technology. The 3D-printed inner surface presented excellent wettability to the working fluid, which was beneficial for the evaporation of the working fluid. Ethanol was selected as the working fluid, and the influence of the filling ratios range of 30–60% on heat transfer performance was analyzed. It was found that a 3D-printed FOHP with a filling ratio of 40% presented the best heat transfer performance with the lowest thermal resistance, and the fabricated heat pipes could be easily bent from 0° to 90°. With the best filling ratio, the thermal resistance of the FOHPs increased with larger bending angles. In addition, the 3D-printed FOHP was successfully applied for the thermal management of flexible printed circuits, and the results showed that the temperature of flexible printed circuits was kept within 72 °C, and its service life was guaranteed.Keywords:3D printing;flexible oscillating heat pipe;thermal resistance;thermal performance
