MoS2 Lubricate-Toughened MXene/ANF Composites for Multifunctional Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Wang Jiaen,Ming Wei,Chen Longfu,Song Tianliang,Yele Moxi,Zhang Hao,Yang Long,Sarula Gegen,Liang Benliang,Yan Luting,Wang Guangsheng

The introduction of MoS 2 generates a “kill three birds with one stone” effect to the original binary MXene/ANF system: lubrication toughening mechanical performance; reduction in secondary reflection pollution of electromagnetic wave; and improvement in the performance of photothermal conversion. After the introduction of MoS 2 into MXene/ANF (60:40), the strain and toughness were increased by 53.5% (from 18.3% to 28.1%) and 61.7% (from 8.9 to 14.5 MJ m −3 ), respectively. Fortunately, the SE R decreases by 22.4%, and the photothermal conversion performance was increased by 22.2% from ~ 45 to ~ 55 °C.

Integrated structural-functional MXene-GNs/ANF flexible composite film with enhanced thermal conductivity and electromagnetic interference shielding performance

Moxi Yele,Gegen Sarula,Jie Yang,Long Yang,Hao Zhang,Longfu Chen,Xiangmei Zhang,Jiahui Wang,Tianyu Wang,Chengzhong Jin,Benliang Liang,Luting Yan

The development of high-performance structural-functional composites capable of reconciling mechanical robustness with multifunctional integration remains a critical challenge. Inspired by the hierarchical structure of nacre layers, we have created flexible ternary composites featuring an interpenetrating three-dimensional (3D) network of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ), graphene nanosheets (GNs), and aramid nanofibers (ANF). This multiscale strategy synergistically combines hydrogen bonding and a nacre-mimetic hierarchical structure with a 3D interpenetrating network, enabled by GNs for interfacial lubrication to overcome the strength-toughness trade-off while facilitating multifunctionality. The optimized MXene-GNs/ANF (60 wt% MXene-GNs, 50:50 ratio, 28 μm thickness) achieves exceptional mechanical properties: tensile strength of 175.10 ± 3.80 MPa, strain at break of 18.56% ± 0.78%, toughness of 15.88 ± 0.60 MJ m −3 . Simultaneously, it shows an electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 36.4 dB (8.2–12.4 GHz) and in-plane thermal conductivity (TC) of 11.58 W m −1 K −1 . Increasing the thickness to 65 μm further enhances EMI SE to 40.2 dB and TC to 23.21 W m −1 K −1 , outperforming most reported analogues. The composite also exhibits excellent thermal stability, with no significant weight loss below 558°C in the N 2 atmosphere, as well as multifunctional properties such as rapid Joule heating (∼160°C at 4 V), environmental resilience, and flame-retardant fire alert. By harmonizing interfacial interactions and hierarchical structuring, this work provides a scalable route to advanced flexible materials for next-generation wearable electronics and extreme-environment applications requiring integrated mechanical durability EMI shielding, and thermal management.

Hierarchically engineered Sandwich-Structured h-MXene/ANF hybrid films with tunable electromagnetic interference shielding and exceptional environmental resilience

Fan Xie,Qiaoling Liu,Longhai Zhuo,Haitao Wei,Yuxuan Shang,Tao Liu,Zhaoqing Lu

High-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with lightweight, multi-resistant properties and superior, tunable EMI shielding performance are urgently needed for next-generation integrated electronic and communication systems, particularly in portable smart devices and artificial intelligence applications. In this work, hollow h-MXene/ANF backbones with a continuous shielding network were fabricated using a facile vacuum-assisted filtration process combined with a sacrificial template method. The structurally engineered h-MXene/ANF hybrid films achieved outstanding EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 78.9 dB and EMI specific shielding effectiveness per unit thickness (SSE/t) of 15703 dB·cm 2 ·g –1 . These exceptional properties are attributed to high ohmic losses, multiple internal reflections, polarization relaxation, and efficient losses in the hollow MXene conductive layer, facilitated by impedance mismatches within the sandwich structure. Notably, the EMI SE performance can be tuned by adjusting the content of hollow MXene microspheres. In addition, extensive hydrogen-bonding interactions between the high-performance ANF and MXene contribute to enhanced mechanical properties, including tensile strength of up to 37 MPa, as well as excellent thermal stability and self-cleaning capabilities. Overall, the sandwich-structured h-MXene/ANF hybrid films exhibit superior mechanical strength, multi-resistant properties, and ultra-high, tunable EMI shielding performance, making them promising candidates for advanced EMI shielding in next-generation portable smart electronic devices.

Bin Yang,Lin Wang,Junfan Zhao,Ruixue Pang,Baolong Yuan,Jiaojun Tan,Shunxi Song,Jingyi Nie,Meiyun Zhang

Pressure sensors with desirable flexibility, robustness, and versatility are urgently needed for complicated smart wearable devices. However, developing an ideal multifunctional flexible sensor is still challenging. In this work, a composite aerogel film sensor with an internal three-dimensional (3D) microporous and hierarchical structure is successfully fabricated by the self-assembly of aramid nanofiber (ANF) and conductive MXene by vacuum-assisted filtration and ice crystal growth. The resultant MXene/ANF aerogel film with a mass ratio of 3/7 (30% MAAF) presents high robustness with an outstanding tensile strength of 14.1 MPa and a modulus of 455 MPa while retaining appealing flexibility and sensitive characteristics due to the 3D microstructure. Accompanied by superior electric conductivity, the MAAF sensor performs noticeably in human motion and microexpression detection with a fast response time of 100 ms and a high sensitivity of 37.4 kPa–1. In addition, MAAF exhibits considerable thermal shielding performance based on the excellent thermostability. Moreover, it possesses prominent electrothermal property with a wide heating temperature range (32.7–242 °C) in a fast thermal response time (5 s) due to the Joule effect. Additionally, a hydrophobic SiO2 coating is introduced on the surface of MAAF to further broaden the sensing application, and the obtained MAAF@SiO2 sensor shows distinguished sensing capability underwater, which can be accurately applied to swimming monitoring. Therefore, this work provides a highly flexible, lightweight, robust, and multifunctional aerogel film sensor, showing promising potential in smart wearable sensing and healthcare devices, intelligent robots, and underwater detection.

Hydrogel-induced ANF-MXene-PEDOT:PSS film by ultra-fast protonation for electromagnetic interference shielding

Ma Shanshan,Liu Siqi,Yan Jifeng,Ren Bin,Yu Hang,Ma Zhaoyang,Sun Lina,Zhang Tengyang,Huo Jinpeng,Yang Yuhui,Fei Jie,Chae Sanghoon,He Chaobin,Li Hejun

The development of a multifunctional conductive film to meet the requirements of flexibility, high-strength and exceptional electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding capacity in the electronic devices has attracted extensive attention. A strategy of hydrogel-induced ultra-fast protonation was proposed for preparing aramid nanofibers-transition metal carbonitrides-poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (ANF-MXene-PEDOT:PSS) conductive films. The ultra-fast protonation process would induce the formation of ultra-long molecular chains and the reconstruction of cross-linking networks to enhance the mechanical properties of films. The ultimate tensile strength of ANF-MXene-PEDOT:PSS (60%) film reached 233.6 MPa, showing an increase of 189.5%. Meanwhile, the encapsulation of conductive PEDOT:PSS layer effectively addressed the issues of the brittleness and highly oxidization susceptibility of MXene. The EMI shielding effectiveness of ANF-MXene-PEDOT:PSS (60%) film reached 45.7–48.2 dB from 8.2 to 26.7 GHz at a thickness of 36 μm. After a month for exposing to air, the EMI shielding capability of ANF-MXene-PEDOT:PSS (60%) film still remained stable (> 42.5 dB). This hybrid film also exhibited high conductivity (264.7 S·cm −1 ), self-cleaning, fire retardancy and joule heating properties, which was as an intelligent sensor to realize the real-time monitoring of human physiological signals. This work paves the way for large-scale production of next-generation high-performance EMI shielding films, demonstrating huge potential in electromagnetic protection, thermal management and intelligent wearable devices. Lightweight and Flexible Fabric Assembled by ANF/GMWCNT Fibers for Broadband Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Tao Chen,Yuefeng Yan,Siqian Liu,Ziyan Cheng,Boshi Gao,Dechang Jia,Yu Zhou,Xiaoxiao Huang

Developing efficient electromagnetic wave absorbing materials that offer both broadband and stability, while enabling simultaneous solutions for equipment stealth and personal protection, remains a critical challenge today. In this work, aramid nanofiber (ANF)/graphitized multiwall carbon nanotube (GMWCNT) composite fibers are prepared via a wet spinning and sol–gel transformation strategy, and further woven into fabrics. Within the composite fibers, GMWCNT bundles around the ANF skeleton to form a continuous conductive network, while generating abundant heterointerfaces. The insulating ANF matrix effectively modulates the impedance characteristics of the composite. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of conduction loss in the micro-macro electrical network and heterointerface polarization, the ANF/GMWCNT composite fiber fabric-2 (AGCFF-2) with an areal density of 7.1×10 −3 g/cm 2 achieves a minimum reflection loss of −75.18 dB, with an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 7.68 GHz. Remarkably, the fabric maintains outstanding performance after heat treatment at 350°C in air, exhibiting an expanded EAB of 8.02 GHz, demonstrating exceptional stability. Additionally, it exhibits a rapid Joule heating response and excellent electromagnetic stealth capability confirmed by radar cross-section simulation. This work provides new insights for designing lightweight, flexible, multifunctional, and high-performance electromagnetic wave absorbers for complex application scenarios.

Novel Sandwich-Structured Flexible ANF/PMIA/ANF Composite Paper with Enhanced Breakdown Strength

Duan Guangyu,Hu Fengying,Liang Yinghao,Lu Duo,Shao Wenxuan,Xu Ruopu,Wang Yabing,Hu Zuming

With the rapid development of cutting-edge electrical equipment and electrical systems, it is of great significance to develop advanced polymeric insulating paper with high breakdown strength under a high-temperature environment. In this paper, aramid nanofibers (ANF) and original poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) paper were utilized to construct ANF/PMIA/ANF composite papers with sandwich structure. On account of the reduced surface roughness of the original PMIA paper, the high breakdown strength of ANF layers and formed high-density electron traps, the breakdown strength of ANF/PMIA/ANF composite paper is significantly enhanced. The Weibull breakdown strength ANF/PMIA/ANF composite paper with 4 mg/mL of ANF are 82.7 MV/m at 25 °C and 61.7 MV/m at 100 °C, which are 165.1 and 137.4% of the A-P-A-0 at 25 and 100 °C, respectively. Additionally, the flame-retardant property of ANF/PMIA/ANF composite paper is also obviously improved with increasing concentration of ANF. Consequently, this work offers an opportunity for the development of novel polymeric insulating paper with enhanced breakdown strength in a wide temperature range.

Protect aramid materials from UV-induced damage by ANF and ANF/light stabilizer composites

Jingyi Nie,Jianfei Liao,Danni Wang,Meiyun Zhang,Zhaoqing Lu,Bin Yang

Aramid materials have been applied in many important civil and military fields. But a major drawback to aramid materials is the susceptibility to UV-induced damage. In this work, aramid nanofibers (ANFs) and ANF/nano-ZnO composites were used to protect aramid materials from UV-induced damage. ANF protective layer was created on the surface of aramid fibers, and the ANF-coated aramid fibers could be further prepared to aramid paper. Moreover, ANF/nano-ZnO composites were synthesized and used for stronger UV-blocking ability. ANFs provided effective protection to aramid material. The properties after UV exposure (about 9.3 years in the natural environment) were largely improved: ANFs improved the retention rate of strength by 17.96% for aramid fibers and by 16.93% for aramid paper. ANFs also showed synergistic effect with UV-absorbing inorganic nanoparticles. After UV exposure, the tensile strength of aramid paper with ANF/nano-ZnO composites was even higher than the initial value (121.55%), and the retention rate of strength was 2.43 times higher than the original aramid paper.

Flexible CoFe2O4@CNT/ANF-PMXene-CNT/ANF multilayer films with magnetic-electric bi-continuous gradient structure for EMI shielding and thermal camouflage

Shanshan Chen,Zhaoqing Lu,Li Hua,Zhijian Li,Fengfeng Jia,Rui Cheng

The rapid escalation of electromagnetic (EM) wave pollution and secondary radiation underscored the urgent need for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with reduced reflectivity. Previous research predominantly emphasized the incorporation of magnetic fillers, often neglecting their synergistic integration with spatial architecture, thereby constraining the multifunctionality of EMI shielding systems. In contrast, layer-by-layer (LBL) fabrication technology offered precise control over microstructures and enabled multifunctional integration, which had been effectively applied in areas such as supercapacitors, controlled drug release, nanofiltration membranes and EMI shielding. By constructing tailored layered configurations, this approach facilitated tunable attenuation of electromagnetic waves. Herein, aramid nanofibers (ANF), carbon nanotubes (CNT), MXene and cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) were employed to fabricate a multilayer film featuring a magnetic-electric bi-continuous gradient structure via LBL assembly. Owing to its hierarchical architecture, the (Z 1 -Z 2 -Z 3 )CoFe 2 O 4 @CNT/ANF-PMXene-CNT/ANF ((Z 1 -Z 2 -Z 3 )CoC/A-PM-C/A) films demonstrated exceptional EMI shielding performance. Particularly, the (80-40-10)CoC/A-PM-C/A composite film achieved a high EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 63.6 dB and exhibited a low reflection coefficient (R) of 0.613, while maintaining favorable mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of 51.2 MPa and toughness of 5.67 MJ m −3 . Simultaneously, the films exhibited superior thermal camouflage capability with a mid-infrared (IR) emissivity as low as 2.61% in the 7∼17 μm range, and displayed effective Joule-heating characteristics. This work introduced a novel strategy for the development of advanced EMI shielding materials, and the resulting (Z 1 -Z 2 -Z 3 )CoC/A-PM-C/A films demonstrated considerable promise in applications involving EMI suppression, infrared stealth, and electrothermal conversion.

Large-Area Fabrication of Robust, Foldable MOF/ANF Membrane

Xue Zheng,Xiaoyan Ma,Zhenbo Yuan,Xichun Zhang,Rui Zhai,Runyu Duan,Xiaoming Song,Chao Teng,Yahong Zhou,Lei Jiang

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold huge potential in salinity gradient energy harvesting for the significant permeability. However, the MOF-based membranes suffer severely in real application due to the poor flexibility and small preparation area. Here, a large-area, roubst and foldable MOF/aramid nanofiber (ANF) heterogeneous membrane (≈137 cm 2 , ≈4.8 µm thickness) is successfully prepared based on a construction strategy proposed by in situ growth of continuous rigid MOF particles on both sides of flexible polymer substrates. ANF with abundant reactive groups are compounded with metal ions and 2-methylimidazole ligands to ensure the interfacial stability of MOFs on ANF membranes. The foldable membrane with high tensile strength (≈151.87 MPa) and fracture strain (≈9.9%) behaves excellent ion selectivity of 0.85 and power conversion density of 59.61 W m −2 under 500-fold salinity gradient due to abundant angstrom/nano-scale channels and surface electronegativity, which is at a high level compared to most of currently reported MOF-based materials. Notably, the heterogeneous membrane holds excellent power generation stability after continuous testing for 14 days. With ANF as the substrate, the selection of different MOF particles can still achieve efficient salinity gradient energy conversion. This construction methodology provides a practical solution for flexible, large-area and free-standing MOF-based nanofluidic membranes for osmotic energy conversion.

Enhancing interfacial bonding and compositional synergy in ANF-PPy/Ag-MXene/ANF-PPy multilayer heterostructures for efficient electromagnetic interference shielding and infrared thermal camouflage

Fan Yu,Fang Jiangyu,Wang Ruoqi,Liu Xiaoyun,Zhuang Qixin,Zuo Peiyuan

The development of multifunctional electronic information materials that combine electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and infrared (IR) thermal camouflage is crucial for the smooth and safe operation of electronic devices. However, it is challenging for traditional shielding materials to simultaneously meet these high demands. Here, based on the strategy of interfacial bonding and compositional synergy, we successfully prepared a multilayer composite film via layer-by-layer vacuum filtration combined with a hot-pressing process using modified aramid nanofibers and MXene nanosheets as substrates. The film features aramid nanofibers-polypyrrole (ANF-PPy) as the matrix and Ag-MXene as the functional filler, and its unique multilayer structure enables it to generate multiple losses during electromagnetic wave transmission. In addition, the in-situ grown Ag nanoparticles effectively extend the MXene layer spacing and significantly enhance electromagnetic wave scattering efficiency. The film with a thickness of only 33 µm exhibits excellent EMI shielding performance (average EMI SE of 66.75 dB and SSE/t of 38432.54 dB cm 2 g −1 ). The tight integration of the multilayer structures also endows their high IR reflectivity. Accordingly, this research lays the foundation for the creation of multifunctional protective materials that have great potential for both military and civilian purposes.

Multifunctional “Bridge‐Beam” structured ANF/MXene aerogels with durable electromagnetic shielding

Xiaomeng Wang,Ting-Ting Li,Jinlong Zhou,Bing-Chiuan Shiu,Hao-Kai Peng,Lu Zhang,Ching-Wen Lou

Rapidly fabricate EMI shielding aerogels. • Optimize interface regulation and preparation processes synergistically. • Achieve shielding effectiveness up to 85.04 dB. MXene aerogels show great potential for mitigating electromagnetic interference in modern electronic devices. However, the weak inter-sheet interactions in mxene aerogels, the fragility of their porous frameworks, and their insufficient flame-retardant durability continue to limit their practical application in harsh electromagnetic environments. Here, a bridge-beam structure (Aramid nanofibers) ANF/MXene aerogel was prepared using interfacial co-assembly and directed freezing techniques. In this structure, aramid nanofibers act as flexible reinforcing bridges connecting adjacent MXene layers, while MXene nanosheets maintain continuous conductive pathways for electromagnetic attenuation. The interfacial interactions between ANF and the oxygen-containing terminal groups of MXene stabilize the porous framework, suppress the restacking of MXene, and contribute to long-lasting shielding performance. More importantly, this bridged porous structure extends the heat conduction path. Consequently, the optimized PPTM-7 aerogel not only exhibits high electromagnetic shielding performance of 81.25 dB and excellent compressive resilience but also features a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 31.1%, low thermal conductivity and enhanced thermal stability. This study provides a strategy based on interfacial stabilization for designing stable ANF/MXene aerogels suitable for electromagnetic shielding applications.
