Stabilization of ASA-in-water emulsions by Laponite modified with alanine

Huili Wang,Wenxia Liu,Xiaofan Zhou,Haidong Li,Kaifeng Qian

Alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) is an oily paper sizing agent that is generally introduced into the paper manufacturing system as an ASA-in-water emulsion. In this paper, ASA-in-water emulsions are prepared by homogenizing the mixture of ASA and aqueous dispersion of Laponite modified with alanine . The modification of Laponite with alanine reduces the emulsion droplet size, and enhances the emulsion stability against coalescence due to lowering the interfacial tension between ASA and water containing Laponite and improving the affinity of Laponite particles toward ASA. Infrared spectrum analysis indicates that the adsorption of alanine on the Laponite particles retards the hydrolysis of ASA when the alanine-modified particles are employed to stabilize ASA emulsions. Meanwhile, the sizing efficiency of the as-prepared ASA emulsion is also improved by the modification of Laponite with alanine, and more dependent on emulsion droplet size than on the hydrolysis of ASA.

Stabilizing alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) emulsions with starch nanocrystals and fluorescent carbon dots

Bei Gong,Wenxia Liu,Xueshuai Chen,Hua Tan,Xiuli Zhang,Huili Wang,Dehai Yu,Guodong Li,Zhaoping Song

Stabilizing alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) emulsions using fine particles instead of cationic starch have attracted much attention in recent years. Herein, starch nanocrystals (SNCs) made from maize starch by H 2 SO 4 hydrolysis were used to co-stabilize ASA emulsions with fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) made hydrothermally from gelatin. The introduction of CDs can significantly enhance the stability and reduce the droplet size of SNC-stabilized ASA-in-water emulsions. Consequently, the sizing performance of the SNC-stabilized ASA emulsion is significantly improved by increasing the CD-to-SNC mass ratio. SNC and CD co-stabilized ASA emulsions show much better sizing performance than starch and CD co-stabilized ASA emulsions, achieving their best sizing performance at a CD-to-SNC mass ratio of 80%. Meanwhile, the morphology of SNC/starch and CD co-stabilized ASA emulsions can be traced under UV excitation.

ASA-in-water emulsions stabilized by laponite nanoparticles modified with tetramethylammonium chloride

Hua Tan,Wenxia Liu,Dehai Yu,Haidong Li,Martin A. Hubbe,Bei Gong,Wei Zhang,Huili Wang,Guodong Li

Alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) is a widely used paper sizing agent that is applied in the form of oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions in order to impart a water-resistant character to the resulting paper. To obtain stable o/w emulsions of ASA, laponite, a highly hydrophilic synthetic clay, was selected as the stabilizer after it had been modified with tetramethylammonium chloride (TMAC), a quaternary ammonium salt with the shortest possible hydrocarbon groups. It was found that the TMAC moderately neutralized the negative charges of laponite particles, lowered the apparent viscosity, but enhanced the turbidity of laponite aqueous dispersion by enhancing the hydrophobicity of the laponite particles, favoring adsorption of laponite particles on the ASA–water interface. Meanwhile, the TMAC significantly decreased the interfacial tension between ASA and water/aqueous laponite dispersion, promoting the formation of an emulsion with small droplets. When the added amount of TMAC reached 1   wt% based on laponite, the as-prepared ASA emulsion had small droplet size, low viscosity and uniform droplet size distribution, and exhibited good creaming/coalescence stability. By using TMAC to modify laponite nanoparticles , the hydrolysis stability and sizing performance of ASA emulsion were also improved.

Using ultrasound-assisted dispersion and in situ emulsion polymerization to synthesize TiO2/ASA (acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate) nanocomposites

Bo Xiang,Jun Zhang

In this study, TiO 2 /acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (ASA) nanocomposites with different loading content of TiO 2 were prepared via in situ emulsion polymerization . Before the polymerization, TiO 2 nanoparticles were dispersed in the reaction monomer by ultrasonic to reduce the agglomeration of TiO 2 . A series of characterization were taken to study the properties of the nanocomposites. The result of Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) analysis indicated that the crystal form of TiO 2 remained unchanged after the in situ emulsion polymerization . Interestingly, the introduction of TiO 2 induced a significant improvement in the impact toughness of TiO 2 /ASA nanocomposites, which increased dramatically by about 10 kJ/m 2 compared with neat ASA. And we attributed this improvement to the better dispersibility of TiO 2 in ASA matrix which is proved by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis. In addition, the solar reflectance of the nanocomposites was related to the addition of TiO 2 nanoparticles. The more the TiO 2 nanoparticle was added, the higher the solar reflectance of the nanocomposite was. Moreover, the outdoor temperature test just proved the result of the solar reflectance.

Study on inhibitory effects of AsA, ZnCl2, and BAPTA-AM on Cd2+-induced cell oxidative stress and cytotoxicity by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) technology

Ke Gao,Yuying Du,Na Pan,Xuewei Zhou,Liping Lu,Xiayan Wang

Cadmium (Cd) can cause cell oxidative stress and cytotoxicity. Few studies have focused on inhibitory effects on Cd2+-induced oxidative stress and related cytotoxicity. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is a highly sensitive and non-invasive electrochemical analytical method. However, no information exists on inhibitory effects on Cd2+-induced cell oxidative stress using SECM technology. Herein, we studied the effects of ascorbic acid (AsA), zinc chloride (ZnCl2), and calcium chelator 1,2-bis (2-aminophenoxy) ethane-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid tetraethoxy methyl ester (BAPTA-AM) on cell oxidative stress with SECM. Subsequently, we studied the inhibitory effects of AsA, ZnCl2, and BAPTA-AM on Cd2+-induced cell oxidative stress. Consequently, 50 μmol L−1 AsA, 5 μmol L−1 ZnCl2, and 5 μmol L−1 BAPTA-AM did not produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and had little effect on cell viability. However, they could significantly reduce Cd2+-induced excessive ROS and alleviate apoptosis (P < 0.01). Additionally, AsA had the strongest inhibitory effects on Cd2+-induced oxidative stress, followed by BAPTA-AM and ZnCl2. The inhibitory effects of AsA, ZnCl2, and BAPTA-AM on Cd2+-induced cytotoxicity might result from directly scavenging ROS and inhibiting oxidative stress-mediated signal transduction, enhancing antioxidant activities and maintaining cell membrane stabilities, and chelating excess calcium2+ (Ca2+) to hinder its subsequent signal transduction, respectively. Scavenging excessive ROS and inhibiting cellular oxidative stress-mediated signal transduction might be the most effective way to alleviate Cd2+-induced cytotoxicity. Our study provides empirical evidence on the inhibitory effects of AsA, ZnCl2, and BAPTA-AM as specialized inhibitors against Cd2+-induced cellular oxidative stress and cytotoxicity, providing precious ideas for detoxifying toxic environmental metal pollutants.

Preparation of ZSM-22/ASA composite material for enhancing n-dodecane hydroisomerization performance

Le Wang,Pengyu Niu,Hongjuan Xi,Xiaoyan Chen,Congbiao Chen,Zhongyi Ma,Litao Jia,Bo Hou,Debao Li

The ZSM-22/ASA composite material for efficient hydroisomerization of n-dodecane was successfully prepared via a two-step synthesis method. The structure, pore properties, and acidity of the catalysts were elucidated by the means of XRD , N 2 physical adsorption, TEM, FT-IR, and Py-IR. Compared with the mixture catalyst, ZSM-22/ASA has a higher average pore diameter and formed a uniform and open channel structure, which is favorable to the diffusion of the reactant and the efficiency of the acid sites. The zeolite and the ASA phase in the composite are closely bonded by the interface effect, forming an additional Si–O–Al structure, which significantly affected the acidity of the composite catalyst. ZSM-22/ASA composite material exhibits enhanced n-dodecane hydroisomerization selectivity of total isomers and multi-branched isomers, which is attributed to its proper acid strength and pore structure conducive to diffusion. Finally, the location distribution of branched methyl groups was discussed and enhanced more central branching iso-dodecanes was obtained over the ZSM-22/ASA composite material.

New insights into the impact toughness of ASA (acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate) with controllable core–shell structure synthesized by three-stage seeded emulsion polymerization

Bo Xiang,Jun Zhang

Acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (ASA) with controllable core–shell structure was prepared through three-stage seeded emulsion polymerization. A series of characterizations had been performed to study the effect of different core–shell ratios on the properties of ASA. The most interesting was that the impact strength of ASA exhibited a “wave” variation instead of a linear variation with the increasing loading content of poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA) core. Moreover, the threshold of impact strength appeared at 49.725 wt% PBA content, nearly 33 kJ/m2. To explain this unusual variation, an impact schematic was proposed.

Preparation of ASA resin with outstanding mechanical properties and processing liquidity, and its application in malleable devices

Shilong Zhu,Yunchao Yang,Wenyu Pan,Jie Liu,Yang Li,Zhiyong Wei,Lin Sang,Xuefei Leng

The polyacrylate-poly (styrene- ran -acrylonitrile) (ASA) resin demonstrates enhanced weather resistance compared to acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) resin by utilizing saturated carbon chain poly (butyl acrylate) rubber to reinforce its toughness. However, the lack of double bonds inhibits the formation of graft structures, leading to poor compatibility. Meanwhile, the current mainstream method for producing ASA resin is the emulsion grafting and blending process, which involves relatively complex production steps. This work employs a strategy based on supramolecular physical interactions and molecular polarity optimization, utilizing a one-pot in situ bulk polymerization method to synthesize processable ASA resin with dipole–dipole interactions between its two-phase structure. The one-pot in situ bulk polymerization method significantly shortens the preparation process for ASA resin. The ASA resin obtained demonstrates outstanding impact strength (79.9 kJ/m 2 ), elongation (47.8 %), and toughness (15.4 MJ/m 3 ). Additionally, it exhibits outstanding processability, with an increase in melt index from approximately 20.0 g/10 min to 47.3 g/10 min. Based on these outstanding mechanical properties, machinability, and weather resistance, it can be fabricated into a sophisticated device through 3D printing technology.

A new member of solar heat-reflective pigments: BaTiO3 and its effect on the cooling properties of ASA (acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate copolymer)

Bo Xiang,Jun Zhang

Although barium titanate (BaTiO 3 , BT) has been extensively used in manufacturing electronic materials, less attention has been paid to the area of cool material. Herein, BT was first used as solar heat-reflective pigment, aiming to be possibly applied in cool roof for cooling purpose. Specifically, four types of BT with different particle size were added into acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate copolymer (ASA) matrix to fabricate composite cool materials. The solar reflectance and cooling effect were investigated by ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV–Vis–NIR) spectral measurement and temperature test, respectively. The results of the solar spectral measurement suggested that the addition of BT particles significantly improved NIR reflectance of ASA by 2–3 times. Besides, the total solar reflectance firstly increased with the increasing average particle size up to 406 nm and then leveled off. Meanwhile, a significant decrease (about 10 °C) was achieved in the indoor temperature test when BT particles were introduced. As for the outdoor temperature test, the final temperature of ASA/BT (406 nm) and ASA/BT (1068 nm) was different though their solar reflectance values were close, indicating that the temperature test was a great complementary instrument of the solar spectral measurement.

Cinnamaldehyde affects the storage quality of freshly cut water chestnuts through the regulation of reactive oxygen species and the AsA-GSH cycle

Xinping Wu,Qiuying Li,Yang Yi,Limei Wang,Wenfu Hou,Youwei Ai,Hongxun Wang,Ting Min

The quality of fresh-cut Chinese water chestnuts (CWCs) rapidly deteriorates with prolonged storage time, thus affecting its commercial value. This study aimed to investigate the effect of cinnamaldehyde (CA) treatment on the quality of fresh-cut CWCs and its mechanism of action. CA treatment maintained good appearance and higher total soluble solids content (TSS) of fresh-cut CWCs and also significantly inhibited microbial proliferation, respiration, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity (PAL) and enzymatic browning substance content. Moreover, CA treatment increased the antioxidant capacity and defense function-related enzyme activities (PPO and POD) of fresh-cut CWCs, and suppressed ·OH production rate and MDA content. Meanwhile, CA treatment significantly increased the content of antioxidant compounds and enzyme activities of the AsA-GSH cycle system. In conclusion, CA can inhibit surface discoloration of fresh-cut CWCs and extend their shelf life, thus increasing their commercial value.

Melatonin Alleviates Antimony Toxicity by Regulating the Antioxidant Response and Reducing Antimony Accumulation in Oryza sativa L.

Yutan Chu,Qiongli Bao,Yan Li,Hongyu Sun,Zewei Liu,Jiahao Shi,Yizong Huang

Antimony (Sb) is a hazardous metal element that is potentially toxic and carcinogenic. Melatonin (MT) is an indole compound with antioxidant properties that plays an essential role in plant growth and alleviates heavy metal stresses. Nevertheless, little is known about the effects and mechanisms of exogenous MT action on rice under Sb stress. The aim of this experiment was to explore the mechanism of MT reducing Sb toxicity in rice via hydroponics. The results showed that Sb stress significantly inhibited the growth of rice, including biomass, root parameters, and root viability. Exogenous MT obviously alleviated the inhibition of Sb stress on seedling growth and increased biomass, root parameters, and root viability by 15–55%. MT significantly reduced the total Sb content in rice and the subcellular Sb contents in roots by nearly 20–40% and 12.3–54.2% under Sb stress, respectively. MT significantly decreased the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA, by nearly 50%), ROS (H2O2and O2·−, by nearly 20–30%), and RNS (NO and ONOO−) in roots under Sb stress, thus reducing oxidative stress and cell membrane damage. Furthermore, MT reversed Sb-induced phytotoxicity by increasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT, and APX) by nearly 15% to 50% and by regulating the AsA–GSH cycle. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the potential of MT to maintain redox homeostasis and reduce Sb toxicity in rice cells, decreasing the content of Sb in rice and thereby alleviating the inhibition of Sb on rice growth. The results provided a feasible strategy for mitigating Sb toxicity in rice. Keywords:antimony (Sb);melatonin (MT);rice;antioxidant;AsA–GSH cycle

Preparation of Multifunctional Drug-loaded Microcapsules with Core-shell Three-dimensional Network Structure and their Application in Colon Targeted Release

Qiujie Fang,Na Chen,Shan Hu,Sheng Hu,Jianfeng Ye,Xiaozhou Ye,Yun Wang

Some special oral drugs may cause adverse reactions and degrade in the stomach; therefore, it is necessary to develop a new generation of multifunctional drug delivery carries to deal with such issues. Herein, by polyelectrolyte composite method using KGM and CS as raw material, CKGM/CS/TPP/5-ASA microcapsules are prepared using 5-ASA as model drug, and then coated with an acid-resistant polyacrylic acid polymer layer. The size of CKGM/CS/TPP/5-ASA microcapsules is relatively uniform, with average particle size 1.78 ± 0.02 mm. The inner part of microcapsules has a core-shell three-dimensional network structure, and the 5-ASA embedded in the network is in its crystal form. The microcapsules exhibited good encapsulate properties, with 495.5 µg mg −1 drug loading amount and 82.3% encapsulation efficiency under optimized conditions. The in vitro release properties of microcapsules are also studied, and results showed that the drug is released little in Simulated Gastric Fluid solution (pH 1.2) but fully released in Simulated Colonic Fluid or Phosphate Buffered Solution (pH 7.0), and the release rate is higher in SCF solution, indicating that β-mannanase could facilitate release. All these results indicated that CKGM/CS/TPP microcapsules have good pH-controlled release, enzymatic release, and sustained release properties, hence they are promising multifunctional colon-targeted release carriers.
