Lithium-selenium batteries (LSeBs) have attracted increasing attention due to their excellent electronic conductivity and high theoretical specific capacity. However, there are still difficult problems such as low utilization rate and fast capacity decay in the actual application process. Herein, a surface iodine modified three-dimensional (3D) nano hollow carbon fiber (I-NHCF) network is designed and synthesized as Se host (Se@I-NHCF) for highly stable LSeBs. The surface iodine species induce the formation of robust cathode electrolyte interface (CEI), thus preventing the transformation of amorphous selenium to low-activity crystalline selenium and enabling stable electrochemical performance. Moreover, the surface iodine species promote rapid charge transfer, enhancing the chemical reaction kinetics and improving the utilization of the active Se species. As a result, the Se@I-NHCF cathode exhibits superior specific capacity of 581.8 mAh g −1 with a high stability (0.0054% capacity decay per cycle) after 500 cycles at 1C, and an excellent rate performance of 567.6 mAh g −1 at 2C. This work addresses the problem of rapid capacity decay by the formation of uniform and robust CEI to conserve highly reactive amorphous Se species, improve Se utilization, and achieve ultra-stable Li-Se batteries with high energy and long cycle life.

Broadening the charging and discharging voltage window of high nickel cathode material NCM811 is the most expected method to improve the high specific energy density of batteries currently, yet the cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) formed by the oxidized and decomposed products of carbonate-based electrolyte under high voltage are always so unsatisfied. Therefore, a voltage-stabilizer, TPFPB (Tris(pentafluoro)phenylborane), added into baseline electrolyte (1 M LiPF 6 in EC:EMC:DMC=1:1:1 vol%) to promote the electrochemical performance of the battery at 4.5 V. The results interpret that the TPFPB-contained NCM811-Li half-cells exhibit high specific capacity (167.10 mAh/g), excellent capacity retention rate (CRR) (75.37 %), and high rate performance (173.3 mAh/g at 5C) during 4.5 V. Meanwhile, through the analysis of the physical characterization techniques. the B- and F-rich interfacial layer, named as CEI film, existing at the interface between the cathode and the electrolyte, produced under 4.5 V, is superior, resulting in impeding the structural collapse of the cathode material and the continued dissolution of transition metal ions (TM n + ) from the cathode material, as well as, ameliorate the electrochemical polarization of the battery, ultimately, it can stabilize the electrochemical performance of the battery under high voltage. Therein, the present work elucidate a new and substantial approach to enhance the high-voltage performances of rich-Ni cathode materials.

BackgroundIdiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) is a progressive autoimmune disease characterized by interstitial lung disease (ILD) with limited therapeutics available. Pirfenidone (PFD), a medication utilized for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, exhibits notable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and inhibition of collagen synthesis. This study aims to clarify its efficacy and mechanism in treating IIM-ILD.MethodsA murine myositis-associated interstitial lung disease (MAILD) model was used to assess the therapeutic effect of PFD. The serum levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α were detected by ELISA. PFD was utilized to disrupt neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation in vitro, and its inhibitory effect on NETs was assessed through immunohistochemistry of CitH3 and MPO in the lung tissue and the serum cfDNA level in mice. Immunohistochemical and western blot was utilized to examine alterations in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and NLRP3 inflammasome markers.ResultsPFD treatment inhibited pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis in the MAILD model. PFD intervention reduced NETs formation in vitro. PFD treatment significantly reduce NETs infiltration in the lung tissue and the level of cfDNA in the serum of mice. Additionally, PFD down-regulated EMT and NLRP3-related proteins in vivo. PFD treatment also notably reduced serum levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α. After NETs stimulation, A549 cells exhibited EMT and activation of NLRP3 inflammasome. PFD attenuated EMT in A549 cells and suppressed the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome.ConclusionPFD alleviates ILD in a murine MAILD model by inhibiting NETs formation and NLRP3 inflammasome activation, suggesting that PFD might be a potential therapeutic agent for IIM-ILD.

Psoriasis is a genetically determined, environmentally triggered, immune system-mediated autoimmune disease. Different animal models are needed to investigate the complex pathological mechanisms underlying this disease. Therefore, we established mannan-induced psoriasis model and compared with the most commonly used imiquimod-induced psoriasis in terms of disease, induction of innate immune cells, expression of cytokines, and the effect of dexamethasone treatment. Mannan significantly induced more severe psoriasis with better disease relapsing feature than imiquimod (IMQ). As determined by immunohistochemistry, IMQ induced significantly more infiltration of CD11c+ and F4/80+ cells than mannan in the skin. However, cytometric analysis showed a significant increase in the percentage of Gr-1+ neutrophils in the spleen and lymph nodes as well as F4/80+ macrophages in the spleen after mannan exposure. Variation in the percentage of significantly increased Vγ4 T cells was also found to be dependent on the lymphoid organs tested. However, there is a clear difference between these models in terms of expression of certain cytokine genes: IL-22, IL-23, IL-17E, and IL-17F were expressed more predominantly in mannan-induced inflammation, while IL-6 and IL-17A expressions were significantly higher in IMQ model. Interestingly, dexamethasone treatment strongly reduced epidermal thickness and histological scores induced by mannan than IMQ. Despite inducing psoriasis-like inflammation, certain differences and similarities were observed in the immune responses induced by mannan and IMQ. However, mannan-induced psoriasis model is relatively more simple, economical and less harmful to mice with an increased possibility to develop a chronic psoriasis model by exposing mice to mannan.

The electrode/electrolyte interfaces play an important role in the electrochemical reaction kinetics to alleviate the severe polarization and voltage hysteresis in lithium primary batteries. Herein, C 5 F 5 N is proposed as an electrolyte additive to tune the characteristics of the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. The Li/CF x primary battery with C 5 F 5 N additive exhibits an excellent discharge-specific capacity of 981.4 mAh g −1 (0.1 C), a remarkable high-rate capability of 598 mAh g −1 (15 C), and an outstanding energy/power density of 1068.7 Wh kg −1 /24362.5 W kg −1 . It also shows remarkable storage performance with 717.2 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C after storage at 55 °C for 2 months. The excellent performance of the Li/CF x batteries is closely related to the improved and stable Li 3 N/LiF-rich homogeneous interfaces induced by the C 5 F 5 N additive, which results in uniform distribution of Li + flux, facilitated electrochemical kinetics, and increased rate capability of Li/CF x battery. Therefore, C 5 F 5 N is expected to be a promising electrolyte additive, and the related electrode/electrolyte interface engineering provides an effective and facile strategy to increase the performance of the lithium primary battery.

Increasing the voltage of lithium batteries represents the most direct and effective strategy for enhancing battery capacity. However, excessively high charging voltages can result in the degradation of battery interfacial contacts and the dissolution of transition metals in the cathode, thereby limiting the cycling performance of the battery. This paper employs a fluorosulfonic acid salt electrolyte as a sacrificial agent to in situ construct a stable CEI (Cathode Electrolyte Interface) and SEI (Solid Electrolyte Interface). The resulting membrane is characterized by a uniform distribution of LiF and LiSO x , which exhibit high lithium-ion conductivity and mitigate dissolution of active materials under high voltage. This membrane effectively restricts further electrolyte consumption, allowing the remaining electrolyte to wet the interface and reduce interfacial impedance adequately. Moreover, the CEI can suppress the dissolution of transition metals from the cathode and prevent them from shuttling to the anode side. When implemented in lithium batteries, the use of the sacrificial agent enables the NCM523/Li battery (with an initial discharge capacity of 105 mAh/g) to achieve a high capacity retention of 85.7 % after 800 cycles at a 1 C rate and 30 °C.

Li-rich cation-disordered rocksalt (DRX) oxides are promising high-energy-density cathodes, yet their practical application is hindered by severe polarization and interfacial instability under high-voltage operation, resulting in rapid capacity fading and voltage decay. Herein, we propose an electrode-level optimization strategy based on conductive-network engineering. By integrating graphene (Gr) with an extended π-conjugated framework and Ketjen Black (KB) with high surface area, a hybrid conductive network (K1G3) is constructed. This network provides continuous electronic pathways and reduces interfacial charge accumulation, thereby mitigating polarization and suppressing parasitic side reactions. Furthermore, the strong Gr–Transition metal (TM) ions coordination anchors on cathode surfaces, suppressing TM dissolution and synergistically promoting the formation of a thin, uniform, LiF-rich cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI). This uniform and robust CEI functions to mitigate degradation of bulk Li-ion diffusion and enhance bulk structural stability. The optimized Mn-based DRX cathode delivers a high-rate capacity of 154 mAh g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 and retains 84.0% of its initial capacity after 100 cycles at 50 mA g −1 , substantially outperforming Super C65 based electrodes. Importantly, these performance advantages are consistently demonstrated in pouch cell configurations. This work highlights conductive-network engineering as an effective strategy for stabilizing DRX cathodes toward practical applications.

Sodium-ion batteries are a promising energy storage system due to their rich sodium resources and many other advantages. However, its development is severely hampered by the electrolyte's low compatibility with the electrode contact. Herein, we propose a solvation control strategy with ethoxy (pentafluoro) cyclotriphosphazene (PFPN) and NaClO 4 double additives to reconstruct the solvation structure of sodium ions in electrolytes. This enables the electrolyte to form a dense and stable solid electrolyte interlayer (SEI) and double-layer cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) on the surface of the electrode material to achieve long-cycle and high-capacity sodium-ion batteries. PFPN can form a stable SEI rich in inorganic components at the anode interface. ClO 4 - can first reach the cathode surface to create a NaCl and polymer-like chain CEI with sodium ions and solvents, and then the PFPN derivatives are migrated to the cathode surface to open the ring and decompose, thus forming a double-layer stable CEI. Therefore, the PEDN electrolyte can simultaneously improve the interface stability of the battery's cathode and anode solid electrolyte. Hence, the capacity retention rate of the 4.5 Ah Na 3 Fe 2 (PO 4 )P 2 O 7 (NFP)||hard carbon (HC) pouch cell after 2500 cycles at 1C is 88.26%.

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) with Li metal anodes and high-voltage LiCoO 2 (LCO) cathodes offer high energy density but face challenges such as Li dendrite growth and LCO structure degradation, which primarily arises from the electrolyte's inability to form a stable interphase. Herein, a dual-additive optimized carbonate-based electrolyte is developed, incorporating tetraethylammonium nitrate (TEANO 3 ) and lithium difluorobis(oxalato) phosphate (LiDFBOP) as regulators. LiDFBOP enhances interfacial stability and compactness, while TEANO 3 facilitates Li + transport and suppresses excessive decomposition of LiDFBOP. The synergistic effect of TEANO 3 and LiDFBOP establishes robust, high ion-conductive solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI) enriched with P- and N-containing inorganic compounds (including LiN x O y and P-O/P-F species), enabling dense Li deposition and stable cycling of LCO under a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V. The optimized electrolyte enables Li||LCO full cells with a high capacity retention of 84% even with high-mass-loading LCO cathode (3.5 mAh cm −2 ) and limited Li (N/P = 2). This work demonstrates a straightforward electrolyte design strategy for optimizing SEI and CEI, advancing the practical deployment of LMBs.

In the ongoing pursuit of energy-dense lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), Li-rich layered oxide (LLO) cathodes provide an attractive path forward with extraordinary capacity delivery and low raw material cost. However, the surface-originated degradations and local structure rearrangement incur severe capacity and voltage fading, which fundamentally impedes the practical deployment of LLOs. Here, we report a pre-constructed multifunctional carbon/fluorine-rich artificial cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) layer via a facile thermal treatment. This surface integrated layer, with high-voltage tolerance and amorphous features, is designed to mitigate surface-originated parasitic reactions and phase transformations induced by electrochemistry. Multiscale characterizations reveal that the artificial CEI layer exhibits excellent interfacial compatibility with both the LLO cathode and the electrolyte system, ensuring highly reversible anionic redox and low activation barrier for Li + transport. Profiting from this architecture, remarkable cycling stability is achieved including 90.6% retention after 300 cycles in half cell, along with high energy efficiency and markedly alleviated voltage fading. More importantly, the artificial CEI layer demonstrates a distinct depolarization effect, which almost completely prevents the rise in charging voltage upon cycling. This work provides valuable insights into surficial/interfacial modulations and broadens research directions for designing high-voltage cathodes with more durable interphases for next-generation batteries.

Ternary nickel-rich layered oxide LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) is recognized as a cathode material with a promising future, attributed to its high energy density. However, the pulverization of cathode particles, structural collapse, and electrolyte decomposition are closely associated with the fragile cathode–electrolyte interphases (CEI), which seriously affect the electrochemical performances of ternary high-nickel materials. In this paper, fluorine- and nitrogen-containing methyl-2-nitro-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzoate (MNTB) was selected, which was synergistically regulated with fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) to generate a robust CEI film. The preferential decomposition of MNTB/FEC results in the formation of an inorganic-rich (Li3N, LiF, and Li2O) CEI film with uniformly dense and stable characteristics, which is conducive to the migration of Li+ and the stability of the NCM811 structure and enhances the cycling stability of the battery system. Simultaneously, MNTB effectively suppresses the adverse reaction associated with increased polarization caused by higher interface impedance due to conventional single FEC additives, further improving the rate capability of the battery. Moreover, MNTB/FEC can effectively eliminate HF, preventing its corrosion on the NCM811 cathode. Under the synergistic effect of MNTB/FEC, after 300 discharge cycles at a high cutoff voltage of 4.3 V and a current density of 1 C (2 mA cm–2), the discharge capacity of the NCM811||Li battery was 150.12 mA h g–1 with a capacity retention of 81.10%, while it was only 32.8% for the standard electrolyte (STD). The discharged capacity of the MNTB/FEC-containing battery was about 115.43 mA h g–1 at the high rate of 7 C, which was considerably higher than that of the STD (93.34 mA h g–1). In this study, the designed MNTB as a novel solvent synergistically regulated with FEC will contribute to the enhanced stability of NCM811 materials at high cutoff voltages and at the same time provide an effective modified strategy to enhance the stability of commercial electrodes.

Conversion-type cathodes such as metal fluorides, especially FeF 2 and FeF 3 , are potential candidates to replace intercalation cathodes for the next generation of lithium ion batteries. However, the application of iron fluorides is impeded by their poor electronic conductivity, iron/fluorine dissolution, and unstable cathode electrolyte interfaces (CEIs). A facile route to fabricate a mechanical strong electrode with hierarchical electron pathways for FeF 2 nanoparticles is reported here. The FeF 2 /Li cell demonstrates remarkable cycle performances with a capacity of 300 mAh g −1 after a record long 4500 cycles at 1C. Meanwhile, a record stable high area capacity of over 6 mAh cm −2 is achieved. Furthermore, ultra-high rate capabilities at 20C and 6C for electrodes with low and high mass loading, respectively, are attained. Advanced electron microscopy reveals the formation of stable CEIs. The results demonstrate that the construction of viable electronic connections and favorable CEIs are the key to boost the electrochemical performances of FeF 2 cathode.
