It has been attracting extensive research interest how to promote the electrocatalytic performance of transition-metal layered double hydroxides (LDHs) for water splitting. Here, we designed a heteroatom-doping and conductive metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs) co-modification strategy to successfully construct a Ru-doped CoCu-HHTP (HHTP=2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) /CoCu-LDH nanosheets array on the Cu foam substrate (labeled as CoCuRu-HHTP/CoCu-LDH). Electrochemical measurements showed that CoCu-LDH, CoCuRu-LDH, CoCu-HHTP/CoCu-LDH and CoCuRu-HHTP/CoCu-LDH separately required an overpotential of 204 mV, 175 mV, 69 mV, 27 mV to deliver the current density of -10 mA cm-2 for HER; and 345 mV, 216 mV, 275 mV, 204 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2 for OER; in 1 M KOH solution. The above facts clearly demonstrate that the present co-modification strategy significantly enhances the electrocatalytic water splitting performance of CoCu-LDH. In a two-electrode setup using the as-prepared CoCuRu-HHTP/CoCu-LDH nanosheets array as the cathode and anode simultaneously, only a cell voltage of 1.48 V was required to deliver the current density of 10 mA cm-2, which is comparable to that of pure noble metal-based materials and outperforms most MOF-based catalysts reported.

The sluggish reaction kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the formation of a biofilm on the cathode prevent efficient and stable operation of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this work, zeolitic imidazolate framework-derived N-doped carbon-supported CoCu-layered double hydroxide nanosheets (CoCu-LDH@NC) were synthesized as a bifunctional cathode catalyst for MFCs. CoCu-LDH supported on CoO@NC induced the production of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from the NC matrix. CNTs and CoCu-LDH nanosheets improved the atomic reaction efficiency and active area for the ORR. The high-speed electron-transfer channel was attributed to two-dimensional CoCu-LDH nanosheets and one-dimensional CNTs. The catalytic activity and stability of CoO@NC were sustained through the incorporation of CoCu-LDH nanosheets. The electronic interaction of CoCu-LDH and CoO@NC enhanced the ORR catalytic activities. CoCu-LDH nanosheets generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Cu+, improving the antibacterial activity to prevent the growth of biofilm for MFCs. CoCu-LDH@NC demonstrated superior oxygen reduction activity with a half-wave potential of 0.84 V and an onset potential of 0.89 V. The maximum power density and operating cycle of the MFCs assembled with CoCu-LDH@NC reached 1012 mW m–2 and 170 h, respectively. This work offers guidance to enhancing the ORR catalytic activity and stability by designing antibacterial ORR catalysts.

Glucose detection with small and micro volume sampling has recently received increasing attention in monitoring personal health. Herein, a cauliflower-type cluster of Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) was directly deposited on the tip surface of a stainless steel acupuncture needle electrode (ANE) by electrochemical deposition, and then this pre-formed cuprous basis was used to further prepare the neatly arranged CoCu-layered double hydroxide (CoCu-LDH) nanosheets that interconnected to form nano-sized pores in the range from 100 to 500 nm. The microstructure and spectral characteristics of the surface modification materials were comprehensively characterized by FE-SEM, EDS, XRD, FT-IR and TEM. Cu2O-based CoCu-LDH composites with special morphology had been proven to accelerate the rate of electron transport and provide more available active centers, and moreover, the mixed valence of Cu/Co induced an excellent synergism for the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose. As a result, CoCu-LDH/Cu2O/ANE as a sensitive glucose probe exhibited two wider linear ranges of 0.03–0.40 mM and 0.40–6.00 mM, with sensitivities of 116.13 μA mM−1 and 52.08 μA mM−1, respectively, and the detection limit as low as 0.46 μM (S/N = 3). The response time only took 3 s and it kept working stably in the interference of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA), and Cl−. In the stability test, the CoCu-LDH/Cu2O/ANE sensor exhibited a stable monitoring sensitivity after 15 days. Finally, the CoCu-LDH/Cu2O/ANE sensor had been successfully applied to glucose analysis in human serum, proving that our design was an attractive strategy for developing a portable, minimally invasive, and low-cost non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensing platform.

Accurate monitoring of blood glucose concentration is crucial for diabetes diagnosis. In this work, a three-dimensional hierarchical structure was fabricated by incorporating CoCu-layered double hydroxide onto flexible carbon foam (CoCu-LDH/FCF). Its porous, sponge-like architecture provides a high specific surface area and exposes abundant catalytic sites, thereby enhancing electrocatalytic performance for glucose sensing. The CoCu-LDH/FCF composite was immobilized onto a screen-printed electrode (SPE) to construct a portable sensor, designated as CoCu-LDH/FCF/SPE. The resulting sensor exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation, featuring a linear detection range of 2–500 μM, a sensitivity of 25.6 μA·μM −1 ·cm −2 , favorable selectivity, and long-term stability. Furthermore, a portable detection platform was developed by integrating the sensor with a flexible electrochemical integration module and a smartphone. Experimental results demonstrate the high performance of the CoCu-LDH/FCF/SPE sensor within this compact system.

Propose the “Ru-O-Co/Cu bridge structure” strategy to establish electronic coupling and a cooperative network, achieving multi-site synergistic catalysis. • In the acidic solution, at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the HER overpotential of Ru 2 /CoCu-LDH@CF is only 19.76 mV, with stability exceeding 300 h. • In the acidic solution, the dual electrodes OWS voltage is as low as 1.35 V. Under the “backdrop of the “dual carbon” strategy steering global energy structure transformation, green hydrogen—an ideal clean energy carrier featuring zero carbon emissions and high energy density—requires large-scale production to boost renewable energy utilization and attain carbon neutrality. To address this challenge, this work, aligned with industrial demands for low-cost green hydrogen, fabricated low-ruthenium-doped Ruₓ/CoCu-LDH@CF (x = 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 mmol) in situ on conductive copper foam (CF) via synergistic effect. Ruthenium doping effectively elevates the material’s electrical conductivity while regulating the electronic configuration of CoCu-LDH. The Ruₓ/CoCu-LDH@CF catalyst demonstrates outstanding activity across the all pH range: In 1 M KOH, the Ruₓ/CoCu-LDH@CF electrode requires only 58.6 mV and 202.4 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm⁻² in both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively, and maintains stable for over 300 h. In 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the HER overpotential of Ru 2 /CoCu-LDH@CF is only 19.76 mV, the overall water splitting (OWS) voltage is as low as 1.35 V. In 1 M PBS, the Tafel slope is as low as 25.01 mV dec⁻¹, signifying fast reaction kinetics. This superior catalytic behavior stems primarily from the Ru-O-Co/Cu bridging structure, which facilitates efficient electron transfer. This advancement offers material support for the efficient, stable production of green hydrogen, further advancing renewable energy-driven electrochemical water splitting toward practical application. It carries substantial theoretical and practical value for curbing carbon emissions, aiding the realization of “dual carbon” targets, and building a clean energy system. With industrialization, wastewater treatment technologies have drawn huge attention and among different approaches the adsorption process is very attractive because of its simple design and low operational cost. In this paper, CoCu-layered double hydroxide (LDH) was prepared having huge surface area with a large pore diameter, which is significant for obtaining excellent adsorption properties for methyl orange (MO). After detailed adsorption kinetics analysis, the results followed pseudo second order (PSO) kinetic model having good correlation coefficient (R 2 ) values. However, adsorption isotherms data matched well with the Freundlich isotherm kinetics model. Furthermore, CoCu-LDH exhibits significant adsorption capacity even in the fifth cycle of MO adsorption, indicating that the CoCu-LDH is competitive and cost-effective adsorbent for anionic dyes from industrial wastewater.
