As bioactive compounds, chiral amino acids (AAs) have been demonstrated to play pivotal roles in different physiological processes, thereby influencing human health. The assessment of the relative enantiomeric ratio through analytical methods is essential for indicating the abnormal status of disease progression, which drives the development of effective methods for resolving and identifying enantiomers. This work presents a robust strategy for the ultrahigh-resolution analysis of chiral AAs using MALDI-TIMS-MS. By employing a chiral derivatization process using S-NIFE and stabilizing the soft chain of the derivatization reagent with bimetal ion addition, the separation of 19 pairs of proteinogenic AAs was successfully achieved. This method not only demonstrates outstanding separation capability but also proves its efficiency in determining enantiomeric ratios, extending its applicability to real sample analysis.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa , a significant opportunistic pathogen, poses a serious threat to food safety due to its antibiotic resistance and strong biofilm-forming ability. In this study, quercetagetin (Que) was identified as a novel quorum sensing (QS) inhibitor. Reporter strain assays, molecular docking, and dynamic simulation indicated that Que acts as an antagonist of the QS receptors. Que attenuated QS-regulated virulence phenotypes in a dose-dependent manner but showed insufficient antibiofilm activity ( p >0.05) at sub-minimum inhibitory concentration (sub-MIC) levels. In contrast, the combination of 0.5 mmol/L Que with 20 mmol/L D-leucine or D-tryptophan exhibited additive effects on planktonic cells, reducing its survival by 2.19–3.97 log compared to the control. For biofilm cells, the combined treatment potentiated the reduction in cell density by 0.48–1.42 log. Notably, these effects were strain-dependent but were equal to or outperformed those of the ε-polylysine (ε-PL) control. Mechanistically, this enhancement was driven by the disruption of biofilm matrix and cell membrane integrity. This was evidenced by the greater suppression of Acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) synthesis and virulence phenotypes, alongside substantial reductions in biofilm biomass and roughness and increased in membrane permeability compared to Que. Furthermore, the combination resulted in repression of key enzymes activities (Na + -K + -ATPase and succinate dehydrogenase) by 29%–38%. These changes indicated a promising strategy to control P. aeruginosa and enhance food safety.

Fluorescein-functionalized fluorescent polymer dots (F-PDs) were prepared by a facile one-pot method by magnetic stirring under mild conditions based on carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and fluorescein as the precursors. The obtained F-PDs exhibited a nanoscale size of 3.2 ± 1.1 nm, excellent water solubility, and bright yellow fluorescence emission with a fluorescence quantum yield of 12.0%. The fluorescent probe displays rapid and sensitive chiral discrimination for lysine focused on different complexation abilities between lysine enantiomers and Cu 2+ . The concentration of L-lysine in the range 4 to 14 mM ( R 2 = 0.997) was measured by the fluorescence intensity ratio ( I 513 / I 429 ); the exitation wavelength was set to λ ex = 365 nm. The detection limit was 0.28 mM (3 σ /slope). Importantly, this sensor accurately predicted the enantiomeric excess (ee) of lysine enantiomers at the designed concentration (lysine: 20 mM; Cu 2+ : 10 mM) ranges. The proposed sensor was successfully applied to determine L-lys (recovery: 95.8–101%; RSD: 0.465–3.34%) and ee values (recovery: 98.5–102%; RSD: 2.61–3.21%) in human urine samples using the standard addition method. Soy protein isolate (SPI) is an attractive natural material for preparing wood adhesives that has found broad application. However, poor mechanical properties and unfavorable water resistance of wood composites with SPI adhesive bonds limit its more extensive utilization. The combination of lysine (Lys) with a small molecular structure as a curing agent for modified soy-based wood adhesive allows Lys to penetrate wood pores easily and can result in better mechanical strength of soy protein-based composites, leading to the formation of strong chemical bonds between the amino acid and wood interface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the degree of penetration of the S/G/L-9% adhesive into the wood was significantly increased, the voids, such as ducts of wood at the bonding interface, were filled, and the interfacial bonding ability of the plywood was enhanced. Compared with the pure SPI adhesive, the corresponding wood breakage rate was boosted to 84%. The wet shear strength of the modified SPI adhesive was 0.64 MPa. When Lys and glycerol epoxy resin (GER) were added, the wet shear strength of plywood prepared by the S/G/L-9% adhesive reached 1.22 MPa, which increased by 29.8% compared with only GER (0.94 MPa). Furthermore, the resultant SPI adhesive displayed excellent thermostability. Water resistance of S/G/L-9% adhesive was further enhanced with respect to pure SPI and S/GER adhesives through curing with 9% Lys. In addition, this work provides a new and feasible strategy for the development and application of manufacturing low-cost, and renewable biobased adhesives with excellent mechanical properties, a promising alternative to traditional formaldehyde-free adhesives in the wood industry.

Enantiomeric excess (ee) is an essential indicator of chiral drug purification in the pharmaceutical industry. However, to date the ee determination of unknown concentration enantiomers generally involves two separate techniques for chirality and concentration measurement. Here, a whispering-gallery mode (WGM) based optofluidic microlaser near exceptional point to achieve the ee determination under unknown concentration with a single technique is proposed. Exceptional point induces the unidirectional WGM lasing, providing the optofluidic microlaser with the novel capability to measure chirality by polarization, in addition to wavelength-based concentration detection. The dual-parameters detection of optofluidic microlaser empowers it to achieve ee determination of various unknown enantiomers without additional concentration measurements, a feat that is challenging to accomplish with other methods. Featuring the sensitivity enhancement and miniature structure of the WGM sensors, the obtained chiroptical response of the present approach is ≈30-fold higher than that of the conventional optical rotation-based polarimeter, and the reagent consumption is reduced by three orders of magnitude.

In this work, achiral metal organic frameworks (MIL-53(Al)–NH 2 ) were synthesized and functionalized with poly (amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers. By dispersing PAMAM grafted MIL-53(Al)–NH 2 to water, the obtained solution exhibited high fluorescence intensity and stability. Due to the strong affinity interaction, fluorescence of the solution was quenched when Cu 2+ was added. Following the addition of lysine to the system, the quenched fluorescence intensity was partially restored based on the chelation between Cu 2+ and lysine. In this case, the fluorescent signal of MIL-53(Al)–NH 2 -PAMAM-Cu 2+ system became turn-on state. Furthermore, because of different chelating abilities with L-lysine and D-lysine, the system exhibited enantioselective fluorescence enhancement. Therefore, the PAMAM grafted MIL-53(Al)–NH 2 were successfully used for enantioselective fluorescence detection of lysine after being quenched by Cu 2+ . The method showed good linearity in both L/D-lysine detection (R 2 = 0.9976–0.9984) and ee values determination (R 2 = 0.9921). The detection limit of L-lysine and D-lysine were 7.52 and 12.2 μmol L −1 , respectively. Reliability of the method was verified by analysis of lysine enantiomers in spiked drinking water samples. Rapid enantioselective fluorescent imaging of lysine enantiomers showed great application prospects in test paper, diagnostic kit and vivo imaging system.

Chiral recognition is of highly interest in the areas of chemistry , pharmaceuticals, and bioscience. An effective strategy of enantiomeric determination of amino acids (AAs) was developed in this work. All 19 natural AAs enantiomers can be easily distinguished by ion mobility-mass spectrometry of the non-covalent complexes of AAs with cyclodextrins (α-CD, β-CD and γ-CD) and Mg 2+ without any chemical derivatization . Differences of the mobilities between the enantiomers’ complexes is from 0.006 to 0.058 V s/cm 2 . In addition, the complex of [β-CD + Phe + Mg] 2+ was selected as an example to study the relative quantification by measuring L/D-Phe at different molar ratio of 10:1 to 1:10 in the μM range, resulting in a good linearity (R 2 > 0.99) and high sensitivity at 2 μM. A DFT calculation was also performed to illustrate the detailed molecular structure of the complexes of CDs , Mg 2+ and D- or L-Phe. Both experiment and theoretical calculation showed that Mg 2+ plays an important role in host/guest interactions, which changed the molecular conformations by non-covalent interaction between Mg 2+ and CDs, and resulted in the different collision cross-sections of the complex ions of CDs, Mg 2+ and D- or L-AAs in the gas phase. This effective and convenient strategy could potentially be utilized in scientific research and industry for routine enantiomeric determination of natural AAs, peptides and some other small chiral biomolecules such as non-natural AAs and carboxylic acid-containing drugs.

So far, the fabrication of chiral metal-organic framework (CMOF) is difficult to predict and the chiral functionality mainly comes from the building blocks that is a part of the frameworks. The induction effect in the chiral nanochannels of the metal-organic framework (MOF) makes achiral polymers have chiral properties, which has not been well explored. Therefore, CMOFs with chiral nanochannels or chiral pores appear to have special functions. Herein, CMOFs (D-his-ZIF-8) with chiral micropores or chiral nanochannels are prepared through a simple 2-methyl imidazolate in-situ substitution by d -histidine. The unmodified polyaniline with chirality ( c -PANI) was synthesized in chiral nanochannels and pores of CMOF, which brought about chiral induction from the chiral nanochannels and pores of CMOF to c -PANI chains. The circular dichroism shows that the c -PANI chains released from the chiral nanochannel still maintains the chiral properties even leaves the chiral nanochannel. It can be seen from the electrochemical results that c -PANI has excellent conductivity, and the conductivity of CMOF is very poor. Electrochemical recognition showed that both CMOF and c -PANI have certain chiral recognition effects for L-Trp and D-Trp, from which the optimal recognition effect was obtained from c -PANI chains. This shows that the excellent conductivity of c -PANI not only expands the electrochemical signal, but also the helical structure of the c -PANI chains accelerates the distinction of chiral molecules. This study provides a novel perspective to induce chiral polymer chains with better conductivity in the nanochannels of CMOF.

2D-EI enables concurrent optimization of antibacterial and anticorrosion performance without pre-set weights. • Bridging data-driven approaches with theoretical calculations reveals the key mechanistic drivers of synergistic effects. • Weak molecular interactions may favor the adsorption configurations of inhibitors on metal surfaces. • The optimized pairs with balanced performance exhibit stronger inhibition against microbial corrosion. Developing advanced antibacterial and anticorrosion bifunctional inhibitor formulations represents a promising approach to address microbial corrosion. Up to now, achieving this goal has been hindered by the following challenges: i) the gigantic search space of the optional components; ii) the inherent trade-off between antibacterial and anticorrosion bifunctionality; and iii) the ambiguous mechanism of achieving ideal formulations. Herein, we developed a data-driven framework that combines bi-objective global optimization with interpretable molecular interaction modules. This approach efficiently explored the vast formulation-performance landscape without pre-set optimization weights, enabling the discovery of the entire Pareto-optimal solutions of amino acid-surfactant pairs. Among these, an optimal formulation with balanced antibacterial and anticorrosion behavior showed the best performance in mitigating the microbial corrosion. Meanwhile, the crucial molecular interaction factors that determined the antibacterial and anticorrosion synergy of inhibitor pairs were found among the various possibilities. Notably, we demonstrated that relatively weak molecular interactions between amino acids and surfactants were paradoxically more favorable for the formation of ideal adsorption configurations on the metal surface. This work delivers a promising corrosion inhibitor discovery paradigm for addressing microbial corrosion, while offering a versatile closed-loop route for the rational design of multifunctional drug combinations.

Chirality is an essential natural attribute of organisms. Chiral molecules exhibit differences in biochemical processes, pharmacodynamics, and toxicological properties, and their enantioselective recognition plays an important role in explaining life science processes and guiding drug design. Herein, we developed an ultra-sensitive enantiomer recognition platform based on an extended-gate metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect-transistor (Nafion–[email protected]–EG-MOSFET) that achieved effective chiral resolution of ultra-sensitive Lysine (Lys) and α-Methylbenzylamine (α-Met) enantiodiscrimination at the femtomole level. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was immobilized on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) through amide bond coupling to prepare the[email protected]complex.[email protected]was drop-cast on deposited Au surfaces with a Nafion solution to afford the extended-gate sensing unit. Effective recognition of chiral enantiomers of mandelic acid (MA), tartaric acid (TA), tryptophan (Trp), Lys and α-Met was realized. Moreover, the introduction of GO reduced non-specific adsorption, and the chiral resolution concentration of α-Met reached the level of picomole in a 5-fold diluted fetal bovine serum (FBS). Finally, the chiral recognition mechanism of the as-fabricated sensor was proposed.Keywords:extended-gate field effect transistor;bovine serum albumin;graphene oxide;chiral sensing

A new class of supramolecular hydrogels have been designed and synthesized via the co-assembly of basic amino acids (AAs) and heteropoly acids (HPAs) under acidic conditions. The formation of gel-like samples is identified using an inverted tube method, rheology, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy reveals that the structural integrity of the HPAs is maintained during the gelation process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrate that the anionic HPAs interact with both the protonated α-NH2 and the protonated side groups of the basic amino acids, initiating the preferential growth of one-dimensional nanofibers. These nanofibers bundle and entangle with each other to form extended three-dimensional network structures. The resulting AA/HPA supramolecular hydrogels show clear stereoselectivity of the basic amino acids. With the decreasing enantiomeric excess of the basic amino acids, the gelation propensity of the AA/HPA complexes is found to be depressed. The co-assembled hydrogels show the UV-responsive photochromic behaviour because of the presence of HPAs. The corresponding XPS data confirm that the photochromism of the hydrogels is attributed to the intervalence charge-transfer transition resulting from the reduction of HPAs. Interestingly, the reduced HPAs within the hydrogel matrix can absorb the near-infrared (NIR) light and exhibit photo-thermal conversion properties, which elevates the bulk temperature of the AA/HPA hydrogels and induces the gel-to-sol transition. This study unveils that HPAs have unique capacity to promote the gelation of basic amino acids for the construction of supramolecular soft materials with functional features.

Sodium alginate (SA) was electrodeposited onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), and then l -lysine ( l -Lys), l -alanine ( l -Ala) and l -cysteine ( l -Cys) were simultaneously introduced to the surface of SA via electrostatic attractions. γ-MnO 2 film was deposited potentiostatically onto the multi-templates immobilized SA from an aqueous mixture of K 2 SO 4 and MnSO 4 . The templates of l -Lys, l -Ala and l -Cys were then oxidized and removed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) while maintaining the crystalline structures of SA and MnO 2 . Finally, the molecularly imprinted SA/MnO 2 was successfully applied in the simultaneous recognition of the isomers of Lys, Ala and Cys by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). This work opens a new avenue in the construction of SA-based multi-templates molecularly imprinted systems for electrochemical simultaneous recognition of the isomers of several chiral amino acids .
