A series of sulfonic acid groups densely on main chain in random (R-SPPQs) and multiblock (MB-SPPQs) form polyphenylquinoline proton exchange membranes (PEMs) with acid-base ion crosslinking were synthesized. The relationship between membrane selectivity of proton conductivity ( σ )/methanol permeability ( P MeOH ) and microstructure is investigated. R-SPPQs PEMs benefit from acid-base ion crosslinking. Ion exchange capacity (IEC) changing from 1.73 to 2.40 meq g -1 , P MeOH increases from 1.89 × 10 -7 to 3.15 × 10 -7 cm 2 s -1 , approximately 1/10 that of NR212. R-SPPQ-5 shows the highest relative membrane selectivity (RS) of 5.5. Its maximum power density ( W max ) of 100 mW cm -2 exceeds that of NR212 (70 mW cm -2 ). Low repetitive structural units of MB-SPPQ-0505 with unconnected hydrophilic microphase-separation structure exhibit promoted σ of 103 mS cm -1 at 60 o C, outperforming R-SPPQ-4 with similar IEC by 45%. The P MeOH value of 4.7 ×10 -7 cm 2 s -1 represents a 66% increase over that of R-SPPQ-4, with a slight decrease in RS to 4.4. Its W max is 103 mW cm -2 . This stems from the combination of low internal resistance and low P MeOH . There’s no significant attenuation in battery performance in the 50-hour durability test, indicating promising potential application prospects in direct methanol fuel cells. Increased repetitive structural units of MB-SPPQ-1010 with interconnected microphase-separated structure, resulting in a further 17% increase in σ than MB-SPPQ-0505 at 60 o C. Whereas P MeOH is elevated to 10.4 × 10 -7 cm 2 s -1 , resulting in a decrease in RS to 2.7. Its W max drops to 65 mW cm -2 .

Developing novel proton exchange membranes that combine superior proton conductivity and low methanol permeation for direct methanol fuel cells is of great significance. Herein, an in-situ ionically crosslinked membrane was prepared by blending sulfonated polybenzimidazole (SPBI, DS = 200%) and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK, DS = 80%) utilizing ionic interactions between protonated imidazole rings and -SO 3 H. The ionic crosslinking suppresses the water solubility of the highly sulfonated SPEEK while enhancing the water uptake of the blend membrane, promoting the formation of continuous hydrophilic channels within the membrane. Meanwhile, due to the restriction of segmental motion by ionic crosslinking, the mechanical properties and methanol barrier performance of the blended membranes were notably enhanced. As a result, the assembled DMFC single cell with SPBI/SPEEK-H + -20% blended membrane exhibits a power density of 117.24 mW cm −2 and low methanol crossover current density of 254.18 mA cm −2 under 80°C with a 2 M methanol concentration.

Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) with high proton conductivity, mechanical stability, and methanol barrier capability is urgently needed for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFCs). In response, a series of highly sulfonated polybenzimidazoles (SPBI) were synthesized, followed by the creation of a unique in-situ ionic self-crosslinking mechanism via acid-base pair interactions between –SO 3 - and protonated N within the imidazolium rings of SPBI in an acidic milieu. The in-situ ionic self-crosslinking not only significantly enhances the mechanical stability of the prepared membrane, but also constructs a microstructure with a free volume radius smaller than the molecular dimensions of methanol, subsequently imparting unparalleled resistance to methanol permeation. After being reduced to an ultrathin thickness of 15 μm, the optimal SPBI-SO 3 H-200 % membrane obtains remarkable high specific proton conductivity of 33.48 S cm −2 . Furthermore, the assembled DMFC demonstrates an exceptionally low methanol crossover current density of 188.25 mA/cm 2 alongside high power density of 109.92 mW cm −2 within 2 M methanol fuel, significantly outperforming the methanol crossover current density of 386.06 mA/cm 2 and power density of 87.13 mW cm −2 achieved by a single cell assembled with Nafion 115 membrane.

A series of poly(ether ether ketone) anion exchange membranes with tunable IEC (Ion-exchange capacity) values are polymerized from a novel bisphenol monomer (4-methyl)phenylhydroquinone. These poly(ether ether ketone) copolymers contain methyl groups on the rigid side chain. The degrees of bromination and quaternary amination of the copolymers are controlled by manipulating the contents of methyl groups in the copolymers. Hence, the IEC tunability of the membrane is achieved. The resulting PEEK-Q-xx membranes show good dimensional stability. The highest swelling ratio (PEEK-Q, with an IEC value of 0.90 mequiv. g −1 ) is only 9.0% at 80 °C, at which temperature, the hydroxide conductivity of PEEK-Q membrane is 0.031 S cm −1 . The methanol permeability values of the membranes are all below 1.5 × 10 −7 cm 2 s −1 , which are much lower than that of Nafion 117. These properties make the membranes good candidate materials for anion exchange membranes for alkaline direct methanol fuel cells.

For the first time, a novel Pt catalyst supported on mesoporous Ti 0.7 W 0.3 O 2 nanoparticles , which exhibited superior advantages such as high conductivity (0.022 S/cm), large specific surface area (201.481 m 2 /g) and homogeneous morphology with 9 nm spherical-like particles, was prepared successfully via the rapid microwave-assisted polyol route. It is found that uniform 3 nm spherical-like Pt nano-forms were adhered homogeneous on the surface of Ti 0.7 W 0.3 O 2 . Intriguingly, the electrochemical surface area of Pt catalyst supported on mesoporous Ti 0.7 W 0.3 O 2 was found to be around 90.05 m 2 /gPt, which is profoundly higher than ECSA value obtained from Pt/C (E-TEK) catalyst. Furthermore, as for methanol oxidation reaction measurement, the I f /I b ratio of the 20 wt % Pt/Ti 0.7 W 0.3 O 2 catalyst was found to be approximately 2.33, which 2.5-folds higher than that of the commercial Pt/C (E-TEK) catalyst. Importantly, the chronoamperometry data also revealed that the 20 wt % Pt/Ti 0.7 W 0.3 O 2 catalyst possessed the higher durability than the commercial 20 wt % Pt/C (E-TEK) catalyst. In addition, the successful synthesis of the 20 wt % Pt/Ti 0.7 W 0.3 O 2 catalyst not only offers an attractive catalyst for fuel cell using methanol but also opens application potentials for solar cells, as well as biosensors.

After tethering sodium 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate (MTS) to the bromomethylated poly(arylene ether ketone) precursor, a novel clustered sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) containing flexible sulfoalkyl groups (MTSPAEK) was prepared and used as polymer electrolyte membrane for application in DMFCs. The chemical structure and the degree of grafting of MTSPAEK copolymers were identified by 1 H NMR spectra. The resulted MTSPAEK copolymers exhibited excellent thermal stability (T d5% > 259 °C) and good mechanical properties (tensile strength at break > 52 MPa). Compared to conventional sulfonated aromatic hydrocarbon polymers, MTSPAEK membranes displayed enhanced oxidative stability in Fenton's reagent owing to the elimination of free radicals by the sulfide groups located on the polymer side chains. Especially, MTSPAEK-2.10 with the highest content of flexible sulfoalkyl groups exhibited a highest proton conductivity of 0.181 S cm −1 at 80 °C. It could be attributed to the obvious hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase-separated structure within the membrane, which was confirmed by AFM images. Moreover, MTSPAEK-2.10 membrane performed a peak power density of 70 mW cm −2 in DMFC when feeding with 2 M methanol at 80 °C, which was comparable to the performance of recast Nafion as reported. Therefore, the combination of good thermal stability and mechanical properties, good oxidative stability, and good methanol barrier performance of MTSPAEK membranes indicated that they have potential to be alternative materials for PEMs in DMFCs.

Oxygen storage capacity is influenced by the morphology and crystal-plane(s) of CeO2, which can thus affect the ability of this material to oxidise carbon monoxide. To investigate the effect of different morphologies/crystal-planes of CeO2 on the electrocatalytic performance of DMFCs (Direct Methanol Fuel Cell), three different types of CeO2 nanocrystals with different crystal-planes were synthesised and later assembled into Pt–xCeO2/Graphene composites with graphene and Pt nanoparticles as the electrocatalyst for DMFCs. According to the HRTEM images, the original morphology and crystal-plane structures of CeO2 are essentially maintained in the three types of Pt–xCeO2/Graphene composite catalysts investigated in this work. The catalytic performance of the Pt–xCeO2/Graphene composites for methanol electrocatalytic oxidation was investigated by a series of electrochemical measurements. Compared with the other catalysts, Pt–rCeO2/Graphene demonstrates superior catalytic activity (onset potential: 0.15 V) and the strongest resistance to poisoning by carbonaceous species (If/Ib: 2.11). The results of H2-TPR shows that rCeO2 with the {110} facet has the best surface reducibility among the xCeO2 with different facets being investigated, which provides a rationale for the superior performance of the Pt–rCeO2/Graphene catalyst. This study indicates that metallic oxides with a suitable crystal plane and shape can effectively enhance the electrocatalytic performance of Pt-based catalysts for methanol electrooxidation.

The use of fuel cells is one of the most promising renewable energy strategies, but they still suffer from many limitations. The high mass enthalpy of hydrogen as a fuel comes at the cost of inconveniences and risks associated with storage, transportation and utilization, while the high performance of Pt catalysts in commercial fuel cells is limited by their high cost, low earth abundance, and poor stability as a result of CO intermediate poisoning. To circumvent these dilemmas, direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) were developed, using methanol as a fuel and Ni as the anode catalyst. Thanks to the condensed form of the fuel, DMFCs are considered as the most promising fuel-cell solution for portable electronic devices. Usually, other elements have to be introduced into Ni-based catalysts to modify the active sites to provide better alternatives to pristine Ni metal in terms of activity and stability. In this study, we provide a mild synthetic method for the preparation of CuNi alloy nanoparticles. The proper alloying ratio leads to the suitable modification of the electronic structure of Ni, which promotes the MOR catalytic reaction on the NiCu alloy. The NiCu alloy catalyst exhibits a mass current density of 1028 mA mgmetal−1 for the MOR at 1.55 V (vs. RHE), which is among the best values obtained from similarly prepared Ni-based catalysts.
