Controlling filtration loss of water-based drilling fluids by anionic copolymers with cyclic side groups: High temperature and salt contamination conditions

He Li,Jinsheng Sun,Shuixiang Xie,Kaihe Lv,Xianbin Huang,Jiajiang Zong,Yu Zhang

Water-based drilling fluids (WDFs) as a thermally unstable colloidal system play an essential role in the drilling operation. The filtration loss control of WDFs under high temperature and salt contamination has been a research hotspot. In this study, the copolymer (named DSA) containing different cyclic side groups was synthesized to control the filtration loss of WDFs. The chemical structure and thermal stability of the DSA were analyzed. The result showed that DSA exhibited only a slight weight loss (6.0 wt%) until 300 °C. The effect of DSA concentration on the rheological performance of WDFs was investigated with a HAAKE rheometer. The filtration loss control ability of DSA was evaluated according to the American Petroleum Institute standards. The filtration loss volume of WDFs with 15 wt% NaCl could be controlled to 9.6 ml with 2.0 wt% DSA after aging at 190 ℃. To study the mechanism, the absorption behavior of DSA on bentonite with concentration was studied. The saturated absorption capacity of 2.0 wt% DSA on bentonite was 94.7 mg/g. The effect of DSA on the dispersion of WDFs was analyzed by measuring the zeta potential and particles size distribution . Then, the micromorphology and permeability of the filter cakes for WDFs were analyzed. According to the results, DSA effectively absorbed on the bentonite surface, reducing the zeta potential and particles size of the bentonite to form filter cakes with low permeability. The filtration loss of WDFs was then controlled by DSA. The research results were instructive for the development of polymer with high temperature and salt resistance for WDFs.

A high-entropy IrTaWSnCeOₓ/Ti DSA with superior activity and durability for oxygen evolution reaction

Jianghua Ren,Jia Chu,Zhaoxing Lei,Rui Zhang,Shanxin Xiong

A high-entropy oxide strategy was adopted to develop high-performance, low-iridium dimensionally stable anodes (DSAs) for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). A novel IrTaWSnCeOₓ coating was fabricated via modified thermal decomposition. Despite an ultralow Ir loading of only 0.4 mg cm −2 , the electrode achieved an overpotential of 286 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 60.5 mV dec −1 , while demonstrating stable operation for over 400 h. This performance significantly outperforms conventional IrO₂–Ta₂O₅ anodes. The high-entropy strategy offers an effective approach to developing durable, low-iridium DSAs.

A dimensionally stable anode DSA-coated titanium electrode (RuO2-IrO2/Ti) for electrocoagulation removal of polystyrene microplastics

Min Zhang,Shuhuan Yin,Jia Wen,Bin Zheng,Shaohua Lin,Haixia Wu

With the increasing severity of microplastic (MPs) pollution in aquatic environments, the process of removing MPs from water environments by electrocoagulation (EC) technology has attracted widespread attention. In this study, EC using a dimensionally stable anode (DSA)-coated Ti electrode (RuO₂-IrO₂/Ti) under pulsed current was employed to treat wastewater containing polystyrene (PS) MPs. The effects of factors such as electrolyte concentration, initial solution pH, current density, pulse frequency, and pulse duty cycle on the PS removal efficiency were investigated. The results showed that the maximum PS removal of 94.2 % was achieved with an energy consumption of 5.5 kWh/g. The removal mechanism of PS was elucidated through analyses including scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of electrode, X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared, and zeta potential measurement of the flocs. Finally, the article conducts an economic analysis of this technology and provides an outlook on its application prospects. This study confirms that the EC technology using RuO₂-IrO₂/Ti can remove MPs from wastewater effectively, which may provide new insights for the development of MPs removal technologies.

Enhancing Chlorine Evolution Performance of Ru-Based DSA Electrodes via Cobalt Incorporation for Direct Electrolysis of Seawater

Jianbo Jiao,Jianfeng Lan,Guizhen Lu,Zhihui Ou,Jianhui Li,Yifei Sun,Li Zhang,Yanling Yang,Bo Wu,JianHua Wu

Titanium-based metal oxide anodes exhibit strong application potential in chlorine evolution antifouling systems from seawater electrolysis. Conventional dimensionally stable anodes (DSA) rely primarily on Ru- and Ir-based noble metal coatings, yet their large-scale industrial application is hindered by high costs and poor chlorine production efficiency. To overcome the aforementioned shortcomings, Co is introduced into the RuIrTiOx/Ti system, adopting a preparation process involving oxalic acid pretreatment and multi-step coating to fabricate RuIrCoTiOx/Ti electrodes. XRD and TEM results indicate a solid solution coating with uniformly dispersed elements formed on the electrode. The RuIrCoTiOx/Ti electrode demonstrates superior catalytic activity and nearly 84.4% faraday efficiency derived from the chlorine evolution compared to binary or ternary metal oxide-coated counterparts. Remarkably, the electrode maintains over 98.1% of its initial activity after 200 hours of continuous electrolysis. While the slightly reduced durability of RuIrCoTiOx/Ti compared to RuIrTiOx/Ti may be caused by an increased specific surface area of the mixed oxide coating and the formation of higher valence states of Ru species after Co incorporation, as evidenced by SEM and XPS results. This study provides an effective design strategy for developing low-cost, high efficiency DSA electrodes, offering promising prospects for industrial application.

Mechanistic Insights into the Durability of IrO2–Ta2O5 DSA Influenced by Organic Additives in a Copper Electroplating System

Zhiming Li,Wei Li,Ning Li,Bo Wu,Yueping Xiong,Qing Cheng,Qi zhao,Jinhui Wu,Deyu Li

In copper electroplating systems, the mechanisms by which organic additives shorten the service life of dimensional stable anodes (DSAs) remain unclear, hindering rational anode and additive design. Here, we investigated the effects of three representative additives—brightener (SPS), suppressor (PEG), and leveler (Collagen)—on IrO₂–Ta₂O₅ DSAs using accelerated lifetime tests, XPS, and DFT calculations. The experimental results showed that all additives reduced electrode durability, with collagen showing the most pronounced effect, shortening lifetime by over 40%. Adsorption of additives increased OER overpotential and accelerated Ir dissolution, leading to decreased electrochemically active surface area and activity. DFT and XPS revealed that collagen and similar N-containing levelers strongly adsorb on IrO₂(110), consistent with their high degradation effect, whereas SPS had minimal impact. Similar adsorption trends were observed on RuO₂(110) and SnO₂(110), suggesting broader relevance. These results clarify additive-induced degradation mechanisms and provide guidance for mitigating durability loss, including optimizing additive concentration and improving oxide coating design.

Coupling effect of piezomaterial and DSA catalyst for degradation of metronidazole: Finding of induction electrocatalysis from remnant piezoelectric filed

Jinxi Feng,Jingxiang Sun,Xiaosheng Liu,Jinzhu Zhu,Shuanghong Tian,Rong Wu,Ya Xiong

Piezocatalysis is an emerging green advanced-oxidation technology for the degradation of toxic pollutants; however, piezomaterials are not generally excellent electrocatalysts. Herein, two complex piezocatalysts (SnO 2 / t -BaTiO 3 and SnO 2 -Sb/ t -BaTiO 3 ) consisting of an electrocatalyst and piezomaterial, respectively, are designed to investigate the coupled effect of piezocatalytic and electrocatalytic processes on the degradation of pollutants. SnO 2 , especially SnO 2 -Sb, can considerably enhance the piezocatalytic degradation of the antibiotic metronidazole (MNZ). The piezocatalytic rate constants of SnO 2 / t -BaTiO 3 and SnO 2 -Sb/ t -BaTiO 3 are 2.3 and 3.0 times that of t -BaTiO 3 , respectively. In the degradation process, SnO 2 and SnO 2 -Sb are confirmed to act as dimensionally stable anode-like (DSA-like) catalysts because they can increase the response of the piezoelectrochemical anodic current and the generation of OH radicals as well as reduce the formation of 1 O 2 . Significantly, the piezoelectric field can drive not only the free charges of t -BaTiO 3 and its remnant piezoelectric field but also those of the loaded electrocatalyst SnO 2 to participate in the degradation of MNZ. These results indicate that the coupling of an excellent electrocatalyst and piezomaterial is an effective method to promote piezocatalytic efficiency.

Flower-like NiCo2O4 spinel microspheres for efficient chlorine evolution under neutral conditions

Ran Zhang,Jing Cao,Ting Peng,KeXuan Wu,Yinqiang Shu

Dimensional stability anodes (DSA), constructed using noble metal oxides like RuO 2 and IrO 2 , is widely used in industrial chlorine production. The DSA electrode demonstrates exceptional chlorine evolution capabilities in acidic solutions and high-chloride concentrations. However, under neutral conditions, its chlorine evolution efficiency diminishes significantly. In this paper, a low-cost, high-efficiency 3D flower-like NiCo 2 O 4 catalyst was fabricated that exhibits high catalytic activity in neutral sodium chloride solutions. The 3D flower-like NiCo 2 O 4 catalyst exhibits good chlorine evolution efficiency, achieving 90 % at 30 mA/cm 2 in NaCl solutions. Furthermore, it's chlorine evolution efficiency of the electrocatalyst surpasses that of commercial DSA electrode at various current densities, making it a highly promising candidate for electrocatalytic applications.

Bismuth Chelate-Mediated Digital Subtraction Angiography

Jiaojiao Wang,Dianxun Fu,Cong Tang,Gang Shu,Xuejun Zhang,Xuening Zhang,Jinbin Pan,Shao-Kai Sun

Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is considered the “gold standard” for the diagnosis of vascular diseases. However, the contrast agents used in DSA are limited to iodine-based small molecules, which are unsuitable for patients with contraindications. Here, we propose iodine-free DSA utilizing a bismuth chelate, Bi-DTPA Dimeglumine, for vascular visualization for the first time. Bi-DTPA Dimeglumine possesses a simple synthesis process without the need for purification, large-scale production ability (over 200 g in the lab), superior X-ray imaging capability, renal clearance capacity, and good biocompatibility. Bi-DTPA-enhanced DSA can clearly display the arteries of the rabbit's head and lower limbs, with a minimum vascular resolution of 0.5 mm. The displayed integrity of terminal vessels by Bi-DTPA-enhanced DSA is superior to that of iopromide-enhanced DSA. In a rabbit model of thrombotic disease, Bi-DTPA Dimeglumine-enhanced DSA enables the detection of embolism and subsequent reevaluation of vascular conditions after recanalization therapy. Our proposed iodine-free DSA provides a promising and universal approach for diagnosing vascular diseases. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

En Ren,Jing Hu,Ziyang Mei,Lin Lin,Qian Zhang,Pan He,Junqing Wang,Tao Sheng,Hu Chen,Hongwei Cheng,Tiantian Xu,Shiyao Pang,Yang Zhang,Qixuan Dai,Xing Gao,Hui Liu,Hongjun Li,Yang Zhao,Zhen Gu,Xiaohui Yan,Gang Liu

Magnetic microrobots, designed to navigate the complex environments of the human body, show promise for minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment. However, their clinical adoption faces hurdles such as biocompatibility, precise control, and intelligent tracking. Here a novel formulation (referred to water-stable magnetic lipiodol micro-droplets, MLMD), integrating clinically approved lipiodol, gelatin, and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) with a fundamental understanding of the structure-property relationships is presented. This formulation demonstrates multiple improved properties including flowability, shape adaptability, efficient drug loading, and compatibility with digital subtraction angiography (DSA) imaging in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. This enables the MLMD as a versatile tool for image-guided therapy, supported by a close-looped magnetic navigation system featuring artificial intelligence (AI)-driven visual feedback for autonomous control. The system effectively performs navigational tasks, including pinpointing specific locations of MLMD, recognizing and avoiding obstacles, mapping and following predetermined paths, and utilizing magnetic fields for precise motion planning to achieve visual drug delivery. The MLMD combines magnetic actuation with an AI-directed close-looped navigation, offering a transformative platform for targeted therapeutic delivery.

Rational surface Design and electron Regulation of co-deposition Ru and Ti on TiO2 nanotubes as self-supporting electrode for high-performance chlorine evolution reaction

Jiangwen Xu,Jinxu Song,Haotian Li,Hui Song,Zicong Yang,Yukun Chang,Wenyuan Zhou,Jinshu Wang,Hongyi Li

The chlorine evolution reaction (CER) is essential for chlorine (Cl 2 ) production. However, the catalyst deactivation and side reaction oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are still serious problems for CER. Improving the stability and selectivity of catalyst for long term electrocatalytic reaction in large current density is highly desired. In this work, a self-supporting Ti/RuO 2 @TiO 2 nanotubes (NTs) electrode had been developed by co-sputtering titanium (Ti) and ruthenium oxide (RuO 2 ) onto the high-ordered titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanotubes substrate. This process produced a well-distributed incorporation of Ti species within the RuO 2 coating. It has revealed that the presence of Ti element optimizes the surface morphology of electrode and modulates the electronic state of ruthenium (Ru) species, effectively preventing over-oxidation and thereby enhancing stability. The Ti/RuO 2 @TiO 2 NTs self-supporting electrode exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic activity for CER, evaluated by lower overpotential (58 mV) at 10 mA cm −2 and reduced Tafel slope (78 mV dec −1 ) than that of other electrodes. Moreover, its mass activity achieving 478 mA mg Ru −1 at 1.3 V (vs SCE) is 4.3 times that of commercial dimensionally stable anodes (DSA). After operating for approximately 150 h at 100 mA cm −2 , the electrode exhibits minimal performance degradation, underscoring its exceptional stability. Additionally, the large potential difference between CER and OER makes it maintain high Cl 2 selectivity, achieving up to 91 % across varying current densities and reaction times. This work provides valuable strategy for designing novel Ru-based catalysts for practical CER applications in seawater and industrial environments.
