Effective electrochemical water oxidation to H2O2 based on a bimetallic Fe/Co metal–organic framework

Kunpeng Liu,Xu Wang,Nan Wang,Ruiyong Zhang,Meinan Yang,Baorong Hou,Wolfgang Sand

Rationally designing high-efficiency catalysts for electrochemical two-electron water oxidation reaction (2e− WOR) to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is extremely important, while designing bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is of great significance for effective 2e− WOR. Herein, MIL-53(Fe) and different proportions of Co-doped MIL-53(Fe) were prepared by a hydrothermal method. The structural characterization and elemental analysis showed that the Co ions were successfully doped into MIL-53(Fe) to form a MIL-53(Fe/Co) bimetallic MOF, and the morphology of MIL-53(Fe/Co) became more regular after Co doping. We found that the optimized MIL-53(Fe/Co) exhibits remarkable 2e− WOR performance, which gave an overpotential of 150 mV at 1 mA cm−2. The overpotential of MIL-53(Fe/Co) was approximately 220 mV (at 1 mA cm−2) lower than that of MIL-53(Fe), which may be attributed to the change of microstructure of MIL-53(Fe) after Co doping and the synergistic effect between Fe/Co. Our work introduces a strategy for designing bimetallic MOF-based electrocatalysts, opening up new possibilities for efficient 2e− WOR systems.

Bifunctional catalyst Fe-Co/AC for synergistic catalyzing microwave-assisted lignin hydrogenolysis

Hongming Liu,Junhao Cui,Zhiyang Zhao,Yongqi Ren,Bailong Chen,Longzhi Li

The traditional utilization of lignin mainly relies on direct combustion, which leads to low energy efficiency and environmental pollution, becoming a key bottleneck restricting the efficient utilization of all components of lignocellulose. This paper introduced a new strategy of microwave-assisted lignin hydrogenolysis over bifunctional catalyst Fe-Co/AC to achieve high-value conversion of lignin. This article firstly investigated the hydrogenolysis characteristics and product distribution patterns in the presence of Fe-Co/AC through catalyst characterization and adsorption calculation, as well as hydrogenolysis experiments. The results showed that the formation of Fe-Co alloy in the catalyst resulted in highly catalytic activity and selectivity for the hydrogenolysis process. Next, the intrinsic effects of solvent hydrogen donors and microwaves on lignin hydrogenolysis were discussed, through comparative experiments of hydrogenolysis in absence of catalyst and microwave-assisted pyrolysis. Lastly, attention was paid to calculate the adsorption characteristics and bond length changes of different substrates under metal components in order to reveal the mechanism of Fe-Co for synergistic catalyzing lignin hydrogenolysis, and to propose a potential pathway for lignin directed conversion into phenol. The findings provide a new approach for efficient bond breaking and intermediates hydrogenation of solid wastes such as lignin and plastics to obtain high value-added products.

Carbonized resin with Fe&Co bimetal for peroxymonosulfate activation to degrade atrazine

Liwei Yang,Yin Wei,Yaqi Peng,Yang Liu,Zhou Shu,Yansong Wang,Qingli Meng,Chuanliang Zhao,Hongmei Zhao,Fashan Yang,Bo Lai

Aiming at realizing heavy metal recycling and resource utilization, a carbon-based bimetallic material (Fe 1 Co 2 @C) was fabricated via calcining cationic resin exchanged with Fe and Co cations. It exhibited superior peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation performance to degrade atrazine (ATZ) compared with the monometallic materials (Fe@C and Co@C). Fe 1 Co 2 @C/PMS performed high degradation of 5 mg/L ATZ with the reaction rate constant ( k obs ) of 0.0869 min −1 within 30 min of reaction time. The effects of catalyst loading, PMS dosage, initial pH, and the presence of inorganic ions (NO 3 − , SO 4 2− Cl − , and HCO 3 − ) and natural organic matters (NOMs) were also investigated in this work. According to the radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), hydroxyl radical ( • OH) and sulfate radical (SO 4 • − ) were identified to be the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for the ATZ degradation, especially • OH. What’s more, reaction mechanism of Fe 1 Co 2 @C was demonstrated that −(C− SO 3 ) x  − Co(II) and the synergy between Fe and Co on the surface could both promote the heterogeneous redox cycles of Co(II)/Co(III) and Fe(II)/Fe(III) to activate PMS. Based on the detection results of intermediates by LC-MS, possible degradation pathways of ATZ included dealkylation, dichlorination, hydroxylation, and deamination-hydroxylation processes were proposed. This research not only provides new insights of PMS activation by carbon-based bimetallic catalyst for water treatment, but also proposes a new way for reusing the waste saturated cation resin waste with heavy metal.

Effect of (NH4)2SO4 on the co-electrodeposition of Fe-Co alloys

Yan Wu,Tao Liu,Bin Ji,Wei Wang

Iron-cobalt alloy is a potential and economical magnetostrictive material, however, our microscopic understanding of the co-electrodeposition process of Fe-Co alloys is still unsatisfactory. In this work, a flat Fe-Co film with 10 μm was successfully prepared by electrodeposition with a non-toxic sulfate solution. The effects of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , an important additive, were studied and DFT calculation was used to analyze the mechanism of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 . EIS shows that (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 can promote the Fe-Co co-deposition process and obviously inhibits the hydrogen evolution reaction. In addition, (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 can significantly reduce the internal stress of the Fe-Co film by 110,000 MPa, so that the cracks caused by the internal stress are obviously removed. The results of quantum chemistry calculation further show that NH 4 + is more inclined to adsorb on Fe-Co surface than H 2 O and H + , which reduces the hydrogen evolution on the electrode surface. The results are beneficial to improve the Fe-Co co-deposition process, reduce the internal stress and to prepare a high-performance Fe-Co magnetic film. The films will be assembled on the electronic devices with sensors.

Fe/Co-Loaded Hollow Carbon Sphere Nanocomposites as Excellent Cathodic Catalysts of Zn-Air Battery

Yuebing Wang,Dunpeng Yang,Aling Chen,Qingfeng Yi

The development of an efficient, stable and low-cost cathode catalyst is necessary for the practical application of Zn-air batteries. In this paper, Fe3+/Co2+ ions were in situ incorporated into polydopamine during the polymerization of dopamine on the surface of the SiO2 spheres. After subsequent pyrolysis and leaching SiO2, the products loaded with different metals (NHCS-Fe, NHCS-Co, NHCS-Fe1Co0.6, NHCS-Fe1Co4, NHCS-Fe1Co10) were obtained. The samples possess a typical hollow carbon sphere (HCS) structure and show efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance under neutral and alkaline conditions. Especially in the neutral electrolyte, the NHCS-Fe exhibits the comparable electrochemical catalytic activity to the commercial Pt/C. For NHCS-Fe, its ORR half-wave potential in neutral and alkaline media is 0.78 V and 0.83 V respectively. Corresponding neutral Zn-air battery reveals a maximum power density of 118.8 mW·cm−2, while they are respective 0.82 V and 46.99 mW·cm−2 for Pt/C. Alkaline Zn-air battery with NHCS-Fe releases a maximum power density of 262.4 mW·cm−2, displaying superior performance to Pt/C. Our work is instructive for the synthesis of novel ORR catalysts with outstanding activity by a versatile synthesis strategy.

Study on Fe-Co/γ-Al2O3 ozone-catalyzed degradation of coking reverse osmosis concentrates

Liping Zhang,Huitong Li,Mengnan Duan,Weiwei Wang,Ran Mu,Zehua Pi,Yubin Shang

Coking reverse osmosis concentrates (ROCs) are characterized by a high organic content, complex composition, and difficulty in biological degradation. To achieve the zero liquid discharge (ZLD) strategy, ROCs need to be treated urgently. This work aims to prepare a modified catalyst under high-efficiency activated alumina (γ-Al 2 O 3 ) loaded with Fe and Co bimetals and to degrade m-cresol as a typical pollutant in actual coking ROCs. The results showed that Fe and Co metals were successfully loaded. Meanwhile, the catalyst enhances the reactive active sites, reduces the activation energy of the reaction, and improves the degradation efficiency. The degradation mechanism and removal process were investigated. The results showed that with the optimal conditions, as ozone dosage of 50 mg/L, gas flow rate of 400 mL/min, catalyst dosage of 30 g/L, and pH value of 9, the removal rates of COD, TOC, and UV 254 were 75.61 %, 56.22 %, and 84.14 %, respectively. This study provides a better treatment option for the degradation of m-cresols in coking ROCs.

Fe/Co decorated C@CNTs derived from bimetallic metal-organic-framework for microwave absorption with wide bandwidth

Yin Wang,Qikui Man,Shiqi Zhu,Zhenkuang Lei,Guoguo Tan,Hongtao Guan

It’s a hurry to introduce a lightweight and high-efficiency microwave absorption material that is easy to synthesize, since the electromagnetic interference pollution is getting increasingly serious. Carbon-based microwave absorption material based on bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) gets high conductivity and good magnetism at the same time, and thus can be regarded as an efficient microwave absorber with lightweight. Herein, we introduce an easy method to compose bimetallic carbon-based microwave absorbers based on ZIF-67. By changing the proportion of Fe 3+ and Co 2+ , not only the magnetism of the material can be adjusted, the amount of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and so as the dielectric property of the material can also be regulated. The method of introducing precursors at room temperature and then calcinating at an Ar atmosphere is simple to repeat and appropriate for mass production. When the dosage molar ratio of Co 2+ : Fe 3+ is 3: 2, the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) can reach − 24.83 dB while the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) can reach 5.14 GHz when the thickness is 1.7 mm, under a 30 wt% filling loading. We believe that this work can provide a reliable method to introduce carbon-based microwave absorption material based on bimetallic MOF materials.

Design of Fe/Co-N doped porous carbon sheets by hard template strategy as an oxygen reduction catalyst for Mg-air batteries

Kun Liu,Yujing Ling,Xianglong Guan,Ke Hu,Angli Zhang,Kaiqi Liu,Haoyi Li,Guangnian Xu,Xu-Cheng Fu

The commercialization of magnesia-air batteries (Mg-air) necessitates the development of highly efficient, cost-effective, and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), replacing expensive and unstable precious metal electrocatalysts. A hard template-assisted synthesis of FeCo nanoparticles immobilized on N-doped porous carbon (Fe-Co-C-N) for the ORR is reported. The half-wave potential of Fe-Co-C-N for ORR (E1/2=0.88 V vs. RHE) is elevated by 40 mV compared to that of 20 wt% Pt/C (E1/2=0.84 vs. RHE). The catalyst exhibits exceptional catalytic performance and remarkable stability. The discharge voltage of the Mg-air battery, utilizing Fe-Co-C-N as the cathode catalyst (1.29 V), surpasses that of the battery employing 20 wt% Pt/C as the cathode catalyst (1.28 V). The Mg-air battery with Fe-Co-C-N as the cathode catalyst exhibited excellent discharge stability and maintained a stable discharge for over 200 hours. The present study offers valuable insights into the structural design and regulatory mechanisms governing the performance of M-N-C catalysts in Mg-air batteries.

Mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co as highly active heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochlorides

Li Junchao,Li Xuhua,Han Jindong,Meng Fansheng,Jiang Jinyuan,Li Jiao,Xu Chunlian,Li Yun

Mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co was prepared as a Fenton-like catalyst to degrade the tetracycline hydrochlorides (TC). The nanocasting strategy with KIT-6 as a hard template was carried out to synthesize the mesoporous bimetallic catalyst. The mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The results showed that the catalyst has significant nanofeatures; the surface area, pore size, and particle size were 113.8 m 2 g −1 , 4 nm, and 10 nm, respectively. In addition, the effects of the operating parameters, such as the iron-to-cobalt ratio, pH, H 2 O 2 , and initial TC concentrations on its catalytic performance were investigated. The best operating parameters were as follows: iron-to-cobalt ratio = 2:1 to 1:1, pH = 5–9, H 2 O 2 : 30 mmol, initial TC less than 30 mg/L. Furthermore, the mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co showed a good performance for degrading TC, achieving a removal rate of 86% of TC after 3 h under the reaction conditions of H 2 O 2  = 30 mmol, mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co = 0.6 g/L, TC = 30 mg/L, pH = 7.0, and temperature = 25.5 °C. The mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co catalyst shows good stability and reusability. This work demonstrated that mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co has excellent catalytic efficiency, smaller amounts of leached ions, and wider pH range, which enhance its potential applications.

Effect of EDTA-2Na modification on Fe-Co/Al2O3 for hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to lower olefins and gasoline

Chengyi Dai,Xiao Zhao,Borui Hu,Xinbao Zhang,Qunxing Luo,Xinwen Guo,Xiaoxun Ma

Capturing and utilization of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) not only leads to effective use of carbon resources, but also alleviates environmental pollution caused by increasing concentration of CO 2 , thus making it a hot research topic in recent years. In this study, a series of highly dispersed iron-cobalt (Fe-Co) catalysts was prepared by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-2Na) modification, which could efficiently convert CO 2 into high value-added chemicals (C 2 -C 4 = and C 5 -C 11 ). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the addition of a small amount of Co and EDTA-2Na contributed to enhance the sintering resistance of Fe species. During the calcination process, EDTA 4− can be decomposed into small organic molecules with reducibility, thus promoting the reduction of iron species. The CO temperature-programmed desorption (CO-TPD) results showed that cobalt enhanced the adsorption and activation of intermediate CO on Na x Fe-Co catalyst, thereby promoting the catalytic conversion of CO 2 . The complexation of EDTA promotes the synergistic effect of Fe-Co bimetals, enhances the chemical adsorption of CO 2 . Sodium in EDTA-2Na promotes the surface basicity of the catalysts, which is favored for improving the product distribution of hydrocarbons. At lower H 2 /CO 2 (1/1) ratio, the EDTA-2Na modified Fe-Co/Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibited high conversion of CO 2 (32.8 %) and excellent selectivity toward high value-added chemicals. The selectivity of by-product CO was only 8.1 %; and C 2 -C 4 = (32.5 %) and C 5 -C 11 (46.3 %) accounted for ∼79 % selectivity among the hydrocarbons generated.

Fe-Co bimetallic MOF-derived carbon directly application as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Jingchuan Guo,Yan Gao,Xuankai Cao,Xing Rong,Shidan Chi,Guolan Fan,Lei Zhang,Guohong Tian,Xudong Zhao

Hydrogen energy has attracted widespread attention as a high-energy–density, sustainable and clean energy source. Hydrogen production by electrolysis of water is a simple and efficient method of hydrogen production. However, most of the currently widely used commercial catalysts are expensive precious metals and their oxides. Therefore, it is necessary to develop low-cost, efficient and stable catalysts to promote the development of the hydrogen energy industry. Metal organic framework (MOF), as a new type of porous, high surface area material, has great potential in catalysis. Bimetallic MOF materials can further improve the catalytic activity of MOF materials as electrocatalysts by adjusting metal sites. In this paper, different proportions of Fe-Co bimetallic MOF materials were synthesized by hydrothermal method, and the Fe-Co bimetallic carbon materials prepared by carbonization at high temperature were used as OER electrocatalyst, and the microstructure and electrochemical performance of the materials were analyzed and evaluated through microscopic mechanism characterization and electrochemical characterization. The test results show that Fe-Co bimetallic carbon materials have excellent electrocatalytic performance, Fe 2 Co/C and RuO 2 have the smallest high-frequency semicircles, and have the smallest internal charge transfer resistance. This indicates that Fe 2 Co/C has similar conductivity to RuO 2 . When the current density is 10 mA·cm −2 , Fe 2 Co/C has an overpotential of 335 mV, and when the current density is 50 mA·cm −2 , Fe 2 Co/C has an overpotential of 382 mV, and the oxygen evolution performance of Fe 2 Co/C is better than that of commercial precious metal catalyst RuO 2 at high current density. At the same time, its Tafel slope is only 58.8 mV·dec −1 , which is lower than that of RuO 2 catalyst, and it has a faster charge transfer rate. After CV cycles and 12 h of electrolysis by continuous chronoamperometry electrolysis, it exhibited excellent electrocatalytic stability.

Bimetallic Fe, Co-Modified TiO2 Derived from NH2-MIL-125(Ti) as an Efficient Photocatalyst for N2 Fixation

Huiying Yang,Xiangchao Meng

The conversion of nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O) into NH3by photocatalysis under ambient conditions has been considered an environmentally friendly strategy. However, developing effective catalysts for N2fixation is still challenging. Herein, we report a bimetallic JH Fe, Co/TiO2derived from NH2-MIL-125(Ti) by the fast Joule heating (FJH) method for visible–light–driven catalytic N2fixation. It was found that the photocatalytic N2reduction efficiency of bimetallic FC@TiO2-JH was improved, enabling an NH3yield rate of 110.14 µmol g−1h−1without any sacrificial agents. Furthermore, the rate was higher than those of Fe@TiO2-JH and Co@TiO2-JH, suggesting that the synergistic effect between Fe and Co broke the electronic equilibrium and increased the center of its d-band, enhancing electronic feedback to the antibonding π* orbitals of N2while weakening the bonding energy of N≡N. Meanwhile, the rate was about 2.75 times higher than that of FC@TiO2-TF, which was calcined in a tube furnace. It is assumed that FJH might lead to the formation of lattice defects, leading to localized charge deficiency, enhanced carrier separation, and transport. Thus, doping of Fe and Co synergistically interacted with the defects produced from FJH, facilitating the photocatalytic reduction process. As detected, it had a greater ability to separate hole–electron pairs and transferred electrons to adsorbed N2at faster rates. Our work demonstrates a prospective strategy for designing bimetallic catalysts derived from NH2-MIL-125(Ti) for N2fixation.
