Efficient removal of arsenic from wastewater using aminated Fe-BTC-based Metal-Organic frameworks

Boyu Du,Nan Jiang,Zengbin Chai,Chao Liu,Xing Zhu

DETA-Fe-BTC MOFs with an irregular porous structure is fabricated by a hydrothermal method combining with Diethylenetriamine (DETA) modification and investigated in batch adsorption experiments for arsenic removal from wastewater. DETA-Fe-BTC show high adsorption ability in wide pHs ranged from 2 to 12 and a wide arsenic concentration range from 1 mg/L to 1000 mg/L. The maximal arsenic adsorption capacity reaches 1748.50 mg/g at a pH of 10. Besides, the MOFs reveal a super-fast arsenic-removal rate. 90.58 % of arsenic was removed from wastewater with an initial arsenic concentration of 40 mg/L in 5 s. Arsenic adsorption kinetics and isotherms follow a chemical adsorption mode and a single-molecule adsorption mode that the MOFs offer abundant Fe 3+ active cites forming Fe-O-As coordination with arsenate or arsenite. Considering its strong recyclability and high efficiency, DETA-Fe-BTC will be used as a potential arsenic scavenger for the disposal of arsenic contaminated groundwater or industrial wastewater.

Fabrication of Fe-BTC on aramid fabrics for repeated degradation of isoproturon

Zhang Hongyu,Wu Shouying,Zhang Ying,Mao Zhiping,Zhong Yi,Sui Xiaofeng,Xu Hong,Zhang Linping

Catalytic degradation is a promising and ideal technology in environmental remediation. Among them, catalytic oxidation and photocatalysis respectively based on catalysts and photocatalysts both trigger broad interests because of their high removal activity. However, the reusability of the powder catalysts still faces substantial challenges. Here, a simple strategy is proposed to load Fe-BTC catalyst on aramid fabrics (AF) to construct Fe-BTC MOF @ aramid fabric (Fe-BTC@AF) composite materials with layer-by-layer in situ self-assembly methods. The experimental results illustrated that 98% isoproturon could be removed by Fe-BTC@AF 20 with oxidant H 2 O 2 , while the single Fe-BTC@AF 20 could photo-degrade 99% isoproturon within 7 h. Meanwhile, it could sustain a high degradation rate of more than 80%, even if it had gone through 5 degradation cycles. Thus, the Fe-BTC@AF composite has a significant advantage in the recycling ability for degradation of isoproturon, which will have potential applications in the efficient removal of organic contaminants in water.

Electrochemical chiral sensor for levofloxacin detection base on Cu/Fe-BTC amplification

Deng Yan,Li Shuhuai,Ma Xionghui,Wu Yuwei,Pang Chaohai,Wang Mingyue,Li Jianping,Zhi Xu

The key to developing sensors for chiral drug determination is to exclude interference from enantiomers. In this study, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) were introduced to prepare a chiral sensor for levofloxacin detection. The MIP was electropolymerised on the surface of the Cu/Fe-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate MOF (Cu/Fe-BTC)-modified Au electrode using levofloxacin as a template molecule. After eluting the levofloxacin, a chiral sensor with recognition sites for levofloxacin was obtained. With this site as a switch, a novel method for detecting levofloxacin was established. Because of the enhanced recognition effect, the sensor can effectively exclude the enantiomeric interference of d-ofloxacin. Moreover, Cu/Fe-BTC can effectively amplify the current response signal and improve the sensitivity of the sensor. The linear range of the sensor was 5 to 4000 × 10 −11  mol L −1 , and the detection limit was 2.07 × 10 −11  mol L −1 . When applied to detecting levofloxacin in actual samples, the sensor showed a 92.7–109.8% recovery. Graphical

Micromotor-assisted highly efficient Fenton catalysis by a laccase/Fe-BTC-NiFe2O4 nanozyme hybrid with a 3D hierarchical structure

Jie Yang,Jia Li,Dickon H. L. Ng,Ping Yang,Wenning Yang,Yong Liu

Self-propelled micro- and nanomotors are a current research focus and have shown attractive potential in environmental applications. Here, we report a biomass approach to construct a novel tubular micromotor decorated with a nanozyme/natural enzyme hybrid, which integrated the advantages of the self-propelled movement, selectivity of a natural enzyme and catalytic activity of artificial nanozymes. Such a micromotor had a unique hierarchical structure where laccase immobilized-Fe-BTC MOF nanoparticles grew uniformly on Mn2O3–NiFe2O4 nanosheets, which was constructed using natural kapok fiber as a template. This laccase-integrated Fe-BTC/NiFe2O4 micromotor was capable of self-propulsion with a speed of 120 μm s−1 by oxygen bubbles via the decomposition of H2O2 catalyzed by Mn2O3. Owing to the incorporation of autonomous motion with high selectivity of natural laccase and high peroxidase-like activity of the Fe-BTC/NiFe2O4 nanozyme, these micromotors exhibited much higher catalytic activity to methylene blue degradation than their passive counterparts. Besides as a substrate to accommodate laccase immobilized-Fe-BTC, magnetic NiFe2O4 also enabled the remote magnetic control on the movement direction.

Rational Regulation of Reducibility and Acid Site on Mn–Fe–BTC to Achieve High Low-Temperature Catalytic Denitration Performance

Kunli Song,Kaiyu Guo,Yixuan Lv,Dandan Ma,Yonghong Cheng,Jian-Wen Shi

Selective catalytic reduction with ammonia is the mainstream technology of flue gas denitration (de-NOx). The reducibility and acid site are two important factors affecting the de-NOx performance, and effective regulation between them is the key to obtain a highly efficient de-NOx catalyst. Herein, a series of Mn–Fe–BTC with different ratios of Mn and Fe are synthesized, among which 2Mn-1Fe-BTC with 2:1 molar ratio of Mn and Fe has excellent low-temperature (LT) de-NOx performance (above 90% NO conversion between 60 and 270 °C) and good tolerance to H2O and SO2 poisoning (88% NO conversion at 150 °C with 100 ppm of SO2 and/or 6% H2O). It is revealed that the reducibility properties and acid sites of Mn–Fe–BTC can be flexibly tuned by the ratio of Mn and Fe. The difference in electronegativity between Fe and Mn leads to the redistribution of valence electrons, which enables the controllable reducibility of Mn–Fe–BTC. Furthermore, different amounts of Mn and Fe lead to different electron transport, which determines the type and number of acid sites. The synergistic effect of Mn and Fe endows Mn–Fe–BTC with enhanced surface molecular adsorption capacity and enables the catalyst to selectively chemisorb NH3 and NO at different active sites. This research provides guidance for the flexible regulation of reducibility and acid site of LT de-NOx catalyst.

Dual-functionalized Fe(BTC)₈(PABA)₂ for ultrafast and ultrahigh-capacity capture of Cd(II) and Pb(II) with multiscale mechanistic insights

Kai Wang,Chunqing Niu,Xin Zhang,Nuo Liu,Zhengxin Luo,Chunhong Zhu,Jian Shi

A mixed mono−/multidentate ligand strategy engineered defective MIL-100(Fe). • Coordinatively unsaturated Fe O sites promoted rapid heavy-metal adsorption. • Defect engineering integrated Fe O exposure and amino functionalization. • Synergistic Fe–O/NH₂/COO − sites enhanced adsorption kinetics and affinity. • A flexible MOF membrane achieved efficient and recyclable heavy-metal removal. To address Pb(II) and Cd(II)-dominated heavy-metal contamination in water, a series of amino-bearing, defect-regulated Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were constructed using ligand engineering. In the synthetic design, the tritopic linker 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H₃BTC) was coupled with the monotopic modulator p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), enabling the simultaneous generation of coordinatively unsaturated Fe O centers and exposed -NH₂ functionalities within the framework. This dual functionalization substantially strengthened the affinity of the adsorbent for divalent heavy-metal ions. Among the obtained samples, 6 mg Fe(BTC)₈(PABA)₂, corresponding to an H₃BTC/PABA feed ratio of 8:2, delivered the best adsorption performance under the conditions of 25 °C, pH 5, and an initial concentration of 150 mg/L, with maximum uptake values of 732.03 mg/g for Pb(II) and 654.05 mg/g for Cd(II), and equilibrium was achieved within 15 min. Kinetic and equilibrium analyses followed the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm, respectively, indicating that monolayer chemisorption dominates the capture process. To improve the handling, recovery, and reusability of Fe(BTC)₈(PABA)₂ particles, they were incorporated into a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous matrix via electrospinning to obtain a Fe(BTC)₈(PABA)₂@PAN membrane. The membrane retained good structural stability and pronounced selectivity, particularly for Pb(II), in both binary-ion media and multi-cationic aqueous systems. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, more than 83% of the initial adsorption capacity was retained. DFT (Density functional theory) calculations further supported the experimental observations, showing that the adsorption originated from cooperative coordination among unsaturated Fe-O-M sites, carboxyl oxygen atoms, and amino nitrogen atoms. Therefore this study provides a defect- and functionality-coupled strategy for developing MOF-based adsorbents with both rapid uptake and high capacity for heavy-metal remediation. A new strategy for efficient detection of triflumuron residues in food: An electrochemical sensor derived from a Cu/Fe-BTC MOF-polymer

Liu Yang,Yu-Han Sun,Xian-Xian Ji,Yuan-Zhen Wang,Yu-Long Liu,Ying Fu,Fei Ye

Triflumuron is an insect growth regulator belonging to the class of insecticides. It finds its primary application in the agricultural sector for the control of various pests, particularly certain beetles, aphids, locusts, and mites. In this paper, a Cu/Fe-BTC composite was synthesized through a straightforward solvothermal approach, subsequently employed as a precursor for the fabrication of an electrochemical sensor denoted as CuFe 2 O 4 @C . The latter exhibited a distinctive core-shell architecture achieved through annealing, and its application was focused on the sensitive detection of triflumuron. The electrochemical behaviour of CuFe 2 O 4 @C for the detection of triflumuron was evaluated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) under optimal conditions in wide concentrations from 1.0 × 10 −4 to 1.0 × 10 −12 mol·L −1 , where there existed a superior linear relationship between the current and the concentration of triflumuron with R 2 being 0.995. Meanwhile, CuFe 2 O 4 @C had a low limit of detection (LOD) of 922 fM for triflumuron. The CuFe 2 O 4 @C/GCE exhibited remarkable sensitivity, long-term stability, excellent reproducibility, and repeatability, as well as effective anti-interference capabilities. Additionally, CuFe 2 O 4 @C demonstrated its applicability for the quantitative determination of triflumuron in diverse real samples with commendable recovery rates. In conclusion, the electrochemical sensor not only displayed exceptional performance in terms of stability, reproducibility, and anti-interference, but also showcased its practical utility in quantifying triflumuron across various real-world samples.

Simultaneous removal of tetracycline and norfloxacin from water by iron-trimesic metal-organic frameworks

Yi Zhou,Fei Fang,Quankun Lv,Yan Zhang,Xuede Li,Jie Li

Antibiotics removal from pharmaceutical wastewater has recently been more and more urgent from the perspective of human health and sustainable environment development. Simultaneously removal of multiple antibiotics from the wastewater is of great significance because various kinds of antibiotics are usually coexist. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), such as low-cost and environmentally friendly Fe-BTC can serve as promising adsorbents for the removal of antibiotic pollutants from water. In this study, Fe-BTC can effectively remove tetracycline (TC) and norfloxacin (Nor) in both single- and binary-pollutant systems. The adsorption capacity of Fe-BTC for TC and Nor are 714.3 and 346.6 mg/g, respectively. Although the adsorption capacity of the competitive system decreased, it still reached 682.5 mg/g and 334.6 mg/g, respectively, which are larger than most of the studies that have been reported for the removal of antibiotics by MOFs. In addition, in the lake water samples contaminated with TC and Nor as well as different simulated water samples, the performance of the material was well maintained. Fe-BTC exhibited high adsorption performance in a broad pH range, as well as under the interference of various ions and natural organic matter, indicating an unprecedented selectivity . In addition, Fe-BTC showed excellent recycling ability. According to the results of batch adsorption experiments and microscopic characterization, the adsorption mechanism of TC and Nor on Fe-BTC is mainly attributed to the coordination, pore filling, and π-π stacking. Overall, our research suggests that Fe-BTC might be a promising material for treating wastewater polluted with complicated antibiotic combinations.

New synthetic strategy toward a natural enzyme–nanozyme hybrid dual-function nanomotor and its application in environmental remediation

Shuo Gao,Chenzhang Liu,Xiaohan Yang,Ziwei Lan,Min Zuo,Ping Yang,Jia Li

Self-driven micro–nanomotors hold great promise for environmental monitoring and remediation. However, developing a nanomotor with dual functions of colorimetric detection and degradation is still a considerable challenge. In this paper, a novel nanomotor with both selective and catalytic activities was synthesized using a combination of natural enzymes and nanozymes. The nanomotor was modeled on natural mineral halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and had a unique layered structure. MnO2 in the inner layer was the fuel catalytic unit, which achieved actuation by catalyzing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to produce oxygen bubbles, and the diffusion coefficient of the nanomotor could reach 2.65 μm2 s−1 in 5% H2O2 solution. Lac/Fe-BTC@NiFe-LDH in the outer layer was the catalytic functional unit, where Lac/Fe-BTC@NiFe-LDH not only exhibited high peroxide-like active enzyme activity, but also provided abundant active sites for the loading of natural laccase. The integration of natural enzymes and nanozymes provided the material with stronger catalytic activity, which could detect the target pollutant minocycline (MC) in water more sensitively and degrade it efficiently, and provided a new idea for the removal of antibiotics from water.

An Fe-organic framework/arginine–glycine–aspartate peptide-modified sensor for electrochemically detecting nitric oxide released from living cells

Tingting Zhao,Ting Shu,Jinrong Lang,Ziyu Cui,Ping Li,Shi Wang

Nitric oxide (NO) is a crucial cell-signaling molecule utilized in numerous physiological and pathological processes. Monitoring cellular levels of NO requires a sensor with sufficient sensitivity, transient recording capability, and biocompatibility. Owing to the large surface area and high catalytic activity of the metal–organic framework, Fe–BTC was used for the modification of screen-printed electrodes (SPEs). This study investigates the electrochemical sensing of NO on modified SPEs. Additionally, the introduction of a cell-adhesive molecule, arginine–glycine–aspartate peptide (RGD), considerably improved the cytocompatibility, resulting in superior cell attachment and growth on the SPE. The Fe–BTC/RGD-modified SPE (Fe–BTC/RGD/SPE) exhibited electrocatalytic NO oxidation at 0.8 V, demonstrating a linear response with a detection limit of 11.88 nM over a wide concentration range (0.17–47.37 μM) and a response time of approximately 0.9 s. Subsequently, the as-obtained Fe–BTC/RGD/SPE was successfully utilized for the real-time detection of NO released from human endothelial cells cultured on the electrode. Therefore, the study undertaken shows remarkable potential of Fe–BTC/RGD/SPE for practical applications in biological processes and clinical diagnostics.
