Pollution of wastewater and natural waters by organic contaminants is a major health issue, yet actual remediation methods are limited by incomplete removal of recalcitrant contaminants and by secondary pollution by chlorinated contaminants and catalytic metals. To attempt to solve these issues, we tested the removal of acid orange by peracetic acid (PAA), a safe oxidant , activated by Fe-biochar that iron anchored on biochar to prevent secondary pollution by iron. Fe-biochar was synthesized using a simple, one-step pyrolysis method. We investigated the effects of PAA concentration, pH, humic acids , chloride, bicarbonate on the reaction. Radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance were used to identify reacting species. Results showed that the granulous structure of Fe-biochar and the presence of Fe, Fe 3 O 4 , Fe 2 O 3 , and Fe 3 C on Fe-biochar surface. The highest removal of acid orange of 99.9% was obtained with 1.144 mM PAA and 0.3 g/L Fe-biochar at pH 7. Acid orange removal increases with Fe-biochar dose, decreases with pH, is slightly inhibited by humic acids and bicarbonate, and is not modified by chloride. Our experimental results suggested that CH 3 C(O)OO· and CH 3 C(O)O· are the main radical species, but there may also be non-radical effects in Fe-biochar/PAA process. Fe-biochar displayed high re-usability, with 92.8% removal after five uses.

Ni-based catalyst is prone to the deactivation by coke deposition during the catalytic steam reforming of bio-oil. In order to optimize catalytic activity of the Ni-based catalyst, a two-stage catalytic reforming scheme was proposed whereby a low-temperature (350–600 °C) pre-reforming process with a less expensive catalyst was introduced prior to the Ni-based catalyst. To study this scheme, the reforming experiments with different combinations of Fe/bio-char (in the first stage) and Ni-Ca/γ-Al 2 O 3 (in the second stage) were conducted. In addition to the quantification of product yields, the tar and gas were characterized with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence spectroscopy, a gas chromatography/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) and a gas chromatography (GC). The results indicate that significant proportions of naphthalenes and polycyclic aromatics in the intermediate volatiles turned into furans, phenols and non-aromatics, which are easier to be reformed on Ni-based catalysts, via the Fe/bio-char pre-reforming, resulting in the increase of the final H 2 and CO yields of the overall process. At high pre-reforming temperatures (550–600 °C), the coke formation on Ni-based catalyst was significantly inhibited due to the Fe/bio-char pre-reforming. In addition, the results indicate that the spent Ni-based catalyst had more free NiO and NiAl 2 O 4 spinel than the fresh one, suggesting that the increase in the catalytic activity of Ni-based catalyst during the reforming process was promoted by Fe/bio-char pre-reforming.

Persulfate (PS) activation by nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) is promising for water purification , while is limited due to its easy agglomeration and oxidation. Herein, nZVI encapsuled in carbon matrix shell was synthesized via one-step carbothermal reduction. The core-shell structure effectively inhibited oxidation and agglomeration of nZVI core, and graphitized porous structures facilitated phenol binding with maximal adsorption capacity of 117.10 mg/g achieved by nZVI 0.6 -BC 800 . Both reactive oxygen species ( S O 4 • − , O • H , O 2 • − and 1 O 2 ) and electron transfer process resulted in phenol decomposition. Owing to diversified active sites, the nZVI 0.6 -BC 800 /PS system could completely degrade phenol degradation within short time, and exhibited great adaptation to extensive pH range (3.0–9.0) and coexisting substances. Additionally, the nZVI 0.6 -BC 800 /PS system could maintain over 85% removal of phenol after three recycles or 50 days of storage, and was highly-efficient to different water environments, thus proposing rational design of iron-carbon catalyst with potential in water treatment.

Persulfate-based (PS-based) advanced oxidation process is a promising technology for degradation of organic pollutants . PS activation needs efficient and economical catalysts and heterogeneous Fe-carbon composites are competitive. Herein, novel N-doped biochar-loaded nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) composites (Fe@N-BC) were synthesized and evaluated for PS activation. Detailed characterization data indicated that graphitic and pyridine N structures were introduced by N-doping, which enhanced the anchoring, dispersion and loading of amorphous nZVI on biochar. Remarkably, the optimized Fe@N-BC material, Fe@N 2 -BC 900 , presented excellent catalytic performance for PS activation for lindane removal. The N-doped defects in biochar acted as reactive bridges and accelerated the electron transfer between nZVI and PS, showing strong synergistic effects toward nZVI. O 2 • − and 1 O 2 were the dominant active species in catalytic systems. Additionally, Fe@N 2 -BC 900 catalyst showed effectiveness over a wide pH range for lindane removal. This work provides a new approach to the rational design and application of Fe@N-BC for persulfate activation in pollution control, which is certified by deep exploration of reaction mechanism.
