Light-driven periodate activation via Fe-N doped semi-coke for enhanced norfloxacin degradation

Huaqi Zhang,Siyi Chen,Zhenhao Wang,Chaoran Fan,Tianming Li,Na Yan,Yian Zheng

Semi-coke (SC), a solid waste generated from the dry distillation of oil shale, is rich in organic matter, classifying it as a functional carbon-based material. Combining the progressive advantages of functionalized carbon-based materials in advanced oxidation technology, this study prepared Fe-N co-doped semi-coke (Fe-N-SC) through a facile one-step pyrolysis of SC pre-impregnated with potassium ferricyanide. Under visible light (VIS) irradiation, Fe-N-SC was able to activate periodate (PI) to establish an Fe-N-SC/PI/VIS system for degrading norfloxacin (NOR). The results showed that this system achieved 99.5%-NOR removal, with a mineralization degree of up to 68.6%- within 30 min. Furthermore, Fe-N-SC exhibited stable performance over a wide pH range (3−9) and maintained high NOR removal efficiency in real water matrices, indicating its robustness and practical applicability. Electron paramagnetic resonance and free radical quenching experiments revealed that h + and ·OH were the primary species responsible for NOR degradation in Fe-N-SC/PI/VIS system. The proposed mechanism involved reactive oxygen species-driven oxidative cleavage of piperazine ring in NOR, leading to its stepwise breakdown and mineralization into harmless end-products. During the degradation process, no toxic intermediates were detected, highlighting the environmental safety of Fe-N-SC/PI/VIS system for sustainable and highly effective removal of antibiotics from aquatic environment.

Fe, N-doped graphene-wrapped carbon black nanoparticles as highly efficient catalyst towards oxygen reduction reaction

Yibo Tang,Ying Lei,Kang Tong,Tong Yang,Tiantian Fu,Yang Xiang,Shulin Zhang,Yujun Si,Chaozhong Guo

Fe, N-doped graphene-like carbon layers-wrapped carbon black composite (L-Fe-AD+C) was developed by pyrolyzing the mixture of Fe-adenine precursors and conductive carbon black as an efficient catalyst to oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Graphitic N sites with more ORR activity are preferentially formed due to the facilitation of metallic Fe. Furthermore, graphene-like ultra-thin networks wrapped around nanoparticles of carbon black greatly increase the exposure of active sites and construct continuous diffusion channels favorable for the transfer of substances. As a result, the as-prepared L-Fe-AD+C exhibits an excellent ORR activity in alkaline electrolyte with a high half wave potential (0.88 V), and superior selectivity together with admirable stability, which are comparable to those of the benchmark Pt/C catalyst. More encouragingly, the L-Fe-AD+C can serve as an efficient cathode catalyst in a zinc-air battery, which reaches a peak power density of 221 mW cm −2 approximating to that of Pt/C catalyst (236 mW cm −2 ). The battery also shows a steady discharge voltage plateau of 1.26 V and specific capacity of 799 mAh g −1 at a discharge current density of 10 mA cm −2 . The results suggest the considerable potential of the L-Fe-AD+C catalyst to replace precious metal catalysts.

In situ template reaction method to prepare three-dimensional interconnected Fe-N doped hierarchical porous carbon for efficient oxygen reduction reaction catalysts and high performance supercapacitors

Pengfei Tian,Jianbing Zang,Shiwei Song,Shuyu Zhou,Hongwei Gao,Hanqing Xu,Xueqing Tian,Yanhui Wang

A novel in situ templates etching method is used to prepare three-dimensional (3D) interconnected Fe-N doped hierarchical porous carbon materials. Citric acid serves as a carbon source and etchant. Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles not only provide the iron source by in situ etching but also act as templates to construct the hierarchical porous structure. The prepared optimal sample displays a high specific surface area of 1643.6 m 2  g −1 with an interconnected abundant hierarchical porous structure and homogeneous distribution of Fe and N elements in the carbon. The optimized sample displays excellent catalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance with a positive half-wave potential (0.85 V), efficient four-electron reaction and excellent durability, which are superior to those of Pt/C (20 wt%) catalyst. Meanwhile, due to the unique interconnected hierarchical porous structure, it also exhibits a high specific capacitance of 378.6 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 and an excellent rate capability of 276.6 F g −1 at 20 A g −1 as supercapacitors electrode materials in 6 M KOH. This work provides a simple design for the preparation of 3 D interconnected Fe-N doped hierarchical porous carbon electrode materials that display potential applications in ORR catalysts and supercapacitors.

Rational design of porous Fex-N@MOF as a highly efficient catalyst for oxygen reduction over a wide pH range

Hongguo Zhang,Yan Wang,Tao Wu,Jianxin Yu,Samuel Raj Babu Arulmani,Weiting Chen,Lei Huang,Minhua Su,Jia Yan,Xianjie Liu

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics are well known to strongly rely on the activives of electrocatalysts . Herein, a Fe-N-doped porous carbon-based electrocatalyst combined with zinc (Zn) -based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (Fe x -N@MOF) was designed and successfully fabricated via a facile process combined immersion doping and pyrolysis. By controlling the formation of Fe 3 C, the physical structure of porous carbon was significantly altered, and the active chemical sites of Fe species can be formed to catalyze ORR. The uniform N-doped three-dimensional interpenetrating network structure yielded a high surface area. Both Fe 3 C and Fe-N x could offer an abundance of active sites and thus promoted Fe 0.05 -N@MOF to exhibit high ORR activity in alkaline, neutral and acid electrolytes. Fe 0.05 -N@MOF showed extraordinary stability and methanol tolerance under a varied pH range conditions, it could be applied as cathode electrocatalyst in different fuel cells such as Zn-air fuel cell (ZFC), microbial fuel cells (MFCs), as well as direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). Fe 0.05 -N@MOF is a promising material to replace Pt-based electrocatalysts as non-precious metal catalysts.

Competitive adsorption characteristics of VOCs and water vapor by activated carbon prepared from Fe/N-doped pistachio shell

Cheng Tangying,Li Jinjin,Ma Xiuwei,Yang Linjun,Zhou Lei,Wu Hao

Various materials have been developed to capture volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to mitigate air pollution. However, sorbent materials with excellent resistance to water are rare. Here, several Fe/N-doped activated carbons (ACs) have been prepared to capture VOCs in humid environments. The ACs were analyzed by various characterization techniques, such as BET, SEM, XPS, XRD, FTIR, and Raman. The results showed that Fe/N doping resulted in the specific surface area of the ACs increasing by 500 to 1000 m 2  g −1 , the average pore size increasing to approximately 2 nm, improved mesoporous structure, higher graphitization, lower hydrophilicity, and polarity. The VOCs adsorption performance of the ACs was evaluated by static and dynamic adsorption experiments. The uptake of toluene and ethyl acetate by ACs was enhanced to 224 mg g −1 and 135 mg g −1 , respectively. And ACs were able to maintain 70 to 80% VOCs adsorption capacity for VOCs at 80% relative humidity. Furthermore, the microscopic mechanisms were investigated by the grand canonical Monte Carlo method (GCMC). The highly graphitized structure and the N functional groups favored the VOC adsorption process and discouraged the adsorption of water vapor. This work affirmed the dominance of Fe/N-doped carbon, which will contribute to the evolution of water-resistant VOCs adsorbent materials. Graphical Abstract

Fe-N-doped porous carbon from petroleum asphalt for highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction

Jingyan Liu,Yang Liu,Peng Li,Luhai Wang,Haoran Zhang,Hui Liu,Jialiang Liu,Yixian Wang,Wei Tian,Xiaobo Wang,Zhongtao Li,Mingbo Wu

Fe-N-doped porous carbon derived from petroleum asphalt (NPCA) was prepared via a facile template synthesis method, with urea as nitrogen source while α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles as template and Fe source. The as-prepared NPCA calcined at 900 °C (NPCA-900) exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance with high diffusion-limiting current density and stability comparable to those of commercial Pt/C catalysts in alkaline environment . The remarkable ORR performance of NPCA could be ascribed to the abundant porosity, large specific surface area (1060 m 2  g −1 ), as well as the doping of Fe-N (especially pyridinic N). The NPCA derived from cheap petroleum asphalt has good application future in the field of catalysis, while it may pave a new way to realize the clean and high value utilization of heavy oils.

Cinnamomum-Longepaniculatum-Leaves-Based Fe-N Doped Porous Carbon as an Effective Oxygen Reduction Catalyst

Yashu Li,Nan Wang,Lu Zhao,Xuanhe Liu,Lin Wang,Chengcheng Xie,Jing Li

Developing low-cost, efficient, and scalable non-precious metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a critical challenge in the field of energy conversion. Among various candidates, Fe-N-doped carbon materials have garnered attention as promising alternatives to commercial Pt/C catalysts for ORR. In this study, we report an Fe-N catalyst synthesized by incorporating iron phthalocyanine withCinnamomum longepaniculatumwaste leaves as the carbon source. This catalyst exhibited an excellent four-electron ORR activity and the half-wave potential (E1/2) reaches 0.875 V, which was superior to that of commercial Pt/C (E1/2= 0.864 V). Additionally, the catalyst exhibits superior methanol tolerance and stability compared to commercial Pt/C. This approach, which utilizes biomass waste for the synthesis of electrocatalysts, not only provides an effective solution for reducing environmental waste but also addresses the issue of sluggish cathodic ORR kinetics in fuel cells, making it suitable for low-cost, large-scale industrial production.

Preparation of High-Efficiency Fe/N-Doped Carbon Catalysts Derived from Graphite Phase Carbon Nitride for Reduction of Oxygen

Yan Wang,Wuxin Liu,Rongzhe Wang,Qing Wang,Shaohua Luo,Pengqing Hou,Yahui Zhang,Shengxue Yan,Xin Liu,Jing Guo

Fe/N-doped carbon (Fe-NC) is an excellent base-metal catalyst for use in an electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with high activity. In this paper, graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was first obtained from the pyrolyzing of melamine, and then different proportions of FeCl3were separately doped into g-C3N4to further prepare the Fe-NC catalyst. The Fe-NC catalyst was applied in an ORR reaction, and the results show that the Fe-NC catalyst doped with 0.5 mmol FeCl3possesses exceptional electrocatalytic performance, with an onset potential of 0.96 V and a half-wave potential of 0.81 V, which approaches that of a Pt/C catalyst. Meanwhile, the Fe-NC catalyst displays high stability and methanol resistance. The results supply a new way to prepare efficient ORR electrocatalysts.

Fe/N-doped carbon dots-based nanozyme with super peroxidase activity, high biocompatibility and antibiofilm ability for food preservation

Fangchao Cui,Lanling Li,Dangfeng Wang,Likun Ren,Jiesen Li,YiLin Lu,Yuqiong Meng,Rui Ma,Shulin Wang,Xuepeng Li,Tingting Li,Jianrong Li

Bacterial biofilm infections cause about 600 million foodborne illnesses and about 420,000 confirmed deaths annually. However, traditional antibiotics and emerging nanomaterials have the problem of causing bacterial resistance, no catalytic activity and low biocompatibility. Herein, one new antibacterial carbon dots-based nanozyme Fe/N-CDs was developed with antibiofilm ability, excellent peroxidase activity and high biocompatibility. The Fe/N-CDs nanozyme manifested outstanding broad-spectrum antibacterial activity (even multidrug-resistant bacteria) by catalyzing the decomposition of H 2 O 2 to •OH through a peroxide-like reaction (V max /K m =1.07×10 -6 /s), which was 5.35-fold that of horseradish peroxidase (V max /K m =0.20×10 -6 /s). The antibacterial activity increased more than 500-fold after catalysis. The inhibitory capability of Fe/N-CDs nanozyme for Hafinia alvei biofilm was up to 80.2% of by inhibiting extracellular polymeric substances, total protein, AKP enzyme and ATPase. Notably, no obvious cytotoxicity and development of bacteria resistance were observed after co-culturing with the Fe/N-CDs nanozyme. Furthermore, the fresh test results demonstrated that the Fe/N-CDs nanozyme could effectively extend the shelf life of salmon for 3–6 days. These findings indicated that nanozyme could be used to extend the shelf life of food. What’s more, this antibiofilm Fe/N-CDs nanozyme provides the potential idea for developing carbon-based nanomaterials with catalytic activity and prevention of bacterial infections in food preservation.

Facilely synthesized porous 3D coral-like Fe-based N-doped carbon composite as effective Fenton catalyst in methylene blue degradation

Bin Ren,Junfeng Miao,Shasha Wang,Yuelong Xu,Zuozhao Zhai,Xiaoxi Dong,Zhenfa Liu

In this study, a 3D Fe-based and N-doped coral-like carbon composite (Fe-NGLC) was successfully prepared via the simple impregnation of a self-made 3D nitrogen-enriched and porous layered graphene-like support with Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 as the precursor. It was characterized through X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, etc.; Fe-NGLC exhibited regular three-dimensional coral-like structures with dense porosity and high of Fe–N species content. As a heterogeneous Fenton catalyst of the methylene blue (MB) degradation, the prepared composite showed impressive activity over a wide pH range (4–10). Almost 100% of the MB could be degraded in 60 min, and the results agreed well with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model . To identify the crucial active sites of MB degradation, the correlation between the rate constant derived from the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the different Fe species in the catalyst prepared under various conditions was investigated. This revealed the key role of the Fe–N complexes for the heterogeneous Fenton reaction. Moreover, Fe-NGLC exhibited recyclability and only a slight decrease in removal efficiency after five cycles. The excellent performance of Fe-NGLC demonstrates its great potential as a Fenton catalyst for wastewater treatment .

Multifunctional Iron–Humic Acid Fertilizer from Ball Milling Double-Shelled Fe–N-doped Hollow Mesoporous Carbon Microspheres with Lignite

Yafu Tang,Yuechao Yang,Shanmin Hou,Dongdong Cheng,Yuanyuan Yao,Shugang Zhang,Jiazhuo Xie,Xiaoqi Wang,Xiaoxiao Ma,Zhen Yu,Shan Li

Iron (Fe) chelated by water-soluble humic substances can effectively overcome plant micronutrient deficiencies. However, the traditional synthesis methods are often complex, expensive, and thus not applicable to large-scale industrial productions. In this work, an ecofriendly and multifunctional Fe–humic acid (HA) complex was successfully prepared through simply ball milling lignite with double-shelled Fe–N hollow mesoporous carbon microspheres (DS–Fe–N–HC). The novel DS–Fe–N–HC was synthesized using a simple strategy and was first applied in activating HA from lignite by solid-phase ball milling to attain the water-soluble HA–iron fertilizer (WHIF). The physicochemical properties of the DS–Fe–N–HC nanocomposites and WHIF were systematically characterized by a series of techniques. A traditional Fe–HA complex is mainly obtained by mixing HA and iron ions, which has poor water solubility because HA is not activated. In comparison to samples prepared with other methods, WHIF contained more stable water-soluble HA. Furthermore, the as-obtained WHIF had higher amounts of proteins and amino sugar tannin as evidenced in FT-ICR MS analysis. Moreover, WHIF contributed to higher activities in chlorophyll content, height, steam diameter, and biomass of peanuts than other samples. The results demonstrate that WHIF is effective in reducing symptoms of iron deficiency in peanuts, which can be attributed to its iron-based compounds and water-soluble HA. The findings of this study provide a promising, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solution to mitigate iron deficiency and promote the growth of peanuts for large-scale agriculture production.

Silk Derived Fe/N-Doping Porous Carbon Nanosheets for Chloramphenicol Electrochemical Detection

Chang Wenzhuo,Zhu Yongxi,Ma Yongjun,Zheng Zhixiang,Wang Chunming

Background: The use of modified electrochemical sensors is essential for the detection of antibiotic drug abuse. The main objective of this article is to develop a silk-derived carbon material for the modification of pyrolytic graphite electrodes (PGE) for the sensitive detection of chloramphenicol (CAP). Methods: We proposed a pyrolysis synthesis of porous carbon nanosheets (Fe-Silk PNC) using silk as a precursor. Properties of carbon nanosheets had been improved by the Fe-Nx atoms doping, which was attributed to the β-sheet structures and amino-group-rich chemical structures of silk fibroin, and this material has been used to modify the pyrolytic graphite electrode (PGE) for the electrochemical determination of CAP. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used to determine the morphology and properties of Fe-Silk PNC surface. In the electrochemical determination, cyclic voltammetry (CV) showed a superior current response while bare electrode performed an inferior result. In addition, different scan rate, pH, accumulation time and accumulation potential were carefully optimized, which proved that this material is appropriate for CAP detection. Finally, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method was used for quantitative measurements. Results: In this study, DPV determination of CAP showed the linear relationship with increasing concentration ranged from 1 to 200 μM, and the low detection limit was 0.57 μM (S/N = 3). SEM and FT-IR results further demonstrated the N-doped carbon nanomaterials were successfully synthesized. With excellent sensing performance achieved, the practicability of the sensor has been evaluated to detect CAP in chicken, shrimps and fish. Conclusion: In summary, a silk derived biomass porous carbon nanomaterial Fe-Silk PNC was simply fabricated and used as a novel electrode material. This kind of novel Fe-Silk PNC modified electrode exhibited excellent sensitivity, anti-interference ability, repeatability, wide linear rang, and was successfully used for determination of CAP in real samples. Therefore, the biomass derived nanomaterial is expected to be used in new sensing materials.
