The utilization of quantum dots (QDs) to improve the performance of perovskite solar cells is attracting much attention due to their unique optical and electronic properties. Most of QDs have to be prepared in advance and then incorporated into the perovskite hosts, which could not ensure the maintenance of their QD characteristics. In this work, we intelligently developed an in situ preparation strategy to disperse AgI QDs homogeneously in the perovskite host for the MAPbI3:AgI(QDs) cross-blended layer directly on indium tin oxide (ITO) via a common and convenient spin-coating process. We combine transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman techniques to demonstrate the cross-blended MAPbI3:AgI(QDs) structure in the final perovskite devices. Furthermore, a series of simply inverted ITO/MAPbI3:AgI(QDs)/PCBM/Ag devices have been designed and fabricated. The photovoltaic performance of these solar cells shows significantly improved short-circuit current density (Jsc) and a champion power conversion efficiency of 16.41% even without a hole transport layer. The current technique induced the crystal growth toward high-quality perovskite films with a homogeneous structure, good crystallinity, less grain boundaries and defects, increased optical path length, and uniform thickness for better solar cell performance. Besides, the impact of the current strategy also lies in an accommodation effect of the hole collection at the ITO side induced by AgI QDs, which modifies the Fermi level of perovskite films, leading to significantly decreased level difference in the Fermi level/work function between the perovskite layer and ITO substrates by ultraviolet photoelectron spectra analysis. More importantly, the charge carrier dynamics of such novel MAPbI3:AgI(QDs) structures were also scrutinized by transient photovoltage analysis.

Achieving uniform and stable hole transport layers (HTL) is crucial for large-area perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, current self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-based HTL suffer from weak interfacial adhesion, poor film uniformity, and limited stability, constraining their scalability. Our study proposes an integrated HTL strategy with in situ SAM anchoring during NiO x synthesis, forming a type of scalable, high-performance, and durable HTL. This strategy significantly enhances molecular ordering, energy level alignment, and charge extraction, leading to a more pronounced performance improvement in large-area slot-die coating modules. PSCs with this HTL achieved a champion PCE of 26.02% (with an active area of 0.0655 cm 2 ), while large-area modules reached 22.80% at 23.25 cm 2 , 21.45% at 87.45 cm 2 , and 20.21% at 749.276 cm 2 (certified at 19.50%), showing superior scalability. Moreover, the irradiation and thermal stability, key concerns for commercial applications, were significantly improved. The encapsulated industrial-scale modules successfully passed the three module quality tests (MQTs) in the IEC 61215-2-2021 standard: outdoor exposure (MQT 08), UV pre-conditioning (MQT 10), and wet-high temperature operating life (MQT 13) tests.

A significant amount of solid residue (SR) and aqueous phase (AP) by-products are typically generated during the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of lignocellulosic biomass. AP often contains substantial quantities of harmful organic matter, which can cause environmental pollution if not adequately treated. Conversely, SR can be utilized as a low-grade solid fuel. Realizing the high-value utilization of this type of by-product not only contributes to mitigating environmental pollution but also improves the overall efficiency of biomass conversion and utilization. The objective of this paper is to valorize AP and SR to produce H 2 . SR obtained from the HTL of corn stalks was converted into activated biochar (AC) to prepare a Ni/AC catalyst for H 2 production from AP through aqueous phase reforming (APR). Through CO 2 activation, the specific surface area of AC reached 691 m 2 /g at an activation temperature of 900 °C and a residence time of 3 h. Using 6 wt% Ni/AC (1/60 g catalyst /mL AP ), H 2 yield reached 17.12 μmol/COD at 320 °C over 3 h, approximately 6-fold of the non-catalyzed reaction, while the COD removal reached approximately 38 %. In the gaseous product, the composition of H 2 , CO, CH 4 , CO 2 was 31.69, 1.51, 0.67 and 66.13 vol%, respectively. In view of the adverse effect of the high COD value of AP on APR, reducing ketones, acetylenes and esters may improve the hydrogen production efficiency of the reaction system. Valorization of SR and AP for H 2 production contributes to enhancing the overall energy conversion of biomass HTL.

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have attracted considerable attention in optoelectronic devices due to their excellent performance. Here, the performance of PeLEDs was improved by utilizing l -phenylalanine-doped PEDOT:PSS as hole transport layer (HTL). The optimal device with l -phenylalanine doped HTL shows a maximum luminance of 3800 cd/m 2 and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 2.80%. Compared with the control device using pure PEDOT:PSS HTL, the maximum luminance was increased by 90%, and the maximum external quantum efficiency was increased by 154%, respectively. This is mainly due to the fact that PEDOT:PSS with l -phenylalanine doping optimizes the morphology of the perovskite film and suppresses the exciton quenching at the HTL/perovskite interface. In addition, moderate addition of l -phenylalanine can enhance the hole injection capability of HTL. These experimental results provide proof of amino acid-modified PEDOT:PSS as HTL and a basis for improving the performance of PeLEDs.

Hole-transport-layer (HTL)-free carbon electrode perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) are promising candidates for low-cost photovoltaic applications, but their performance is still limited by defect-induced recombination and insufficient long-term stability. Herein, ethacridine lactate (EAL) is employed as a multifunctional additive in the perovskite precursor solution to regulate film quality and interfacial properties. Owing to the presence of a carboxyl group in the lactate anion and two amino groups in the ethacridine cation, EAL interacts with undercoordinated Pb 2+ and dangling I − species, which stabilizes the perovskite structure and promotes charge transport across the perovskite/carbon interface. Consequently, the EAL-modified films show improved morphology and reduced defect density, resulting in enhanced photovoltaic performance. The optimized device delivers a power conversion efficiency of 16.54% and retains 80% of its initial efficiency after 1200 h without encapsulation. This work highlights an effective additive-engineering strategy for achieving efficient and stable HTL-free carbon electrode PSCs.

In recent years, hole transport layer-free all-inorganic CsPbI2Br carbon-electroded perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) have garnered significant attention due to a trade-off between stability and photovoltaic performance. However, there are inevitably many defects generated at the surfaces or grain boundaries of CsPbI2Br perovskite films, which will serve as carrier non-radiative recombination centers, and CsPbI2Br perovskite films are sensitive to water molecules to degrade, together with energy level mismatch between CsPbI2Br perovskite and carbon electrodes. Herein, 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (1-B-3-MIMPF6), an imidazolium-based ionic liquid simultaneously containing benzene ring and fluorine atoms, was introduced for the modification of the perovskite/carbon interface. The results showed that it could effectively reduce defects, enhance carrier transfer, mitigate carrier non-radiative recombination, facilitate energy alignment, and block moisture intrusion. Therefore, the photovoltaic performance of the modified PSCs with ITO/SnO2/CsPbI2Br/1-B-3-MIMPF6/carbon architecture has been boosted with a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.47%, open circuit voltage of 1.20 V, short circuit current density of 14.69 mA/cm2, and fill factor of 76%. Moreover, the unencapsulated modified devices exhibited an improved stability and maintained 78% of their initial PCE after 24 h storage at room temperature in a 30%–35% humidity environment, whereas the pristine devices dropped to almost zero.

Inverted perovskite solar cells without pre-depositing a layer of hole-transport materials (HTL-free PSCs) still suffer from the non-irradiative recombination at the perovskite/electron-transport layer (ETL) interface. In this work, we report a molecular complementary passivation (MCP) strategy by employing propylphosphonic acid 3-ammonium bromide (PPAABr) to cooperate with phenethylammonium bromide (PEABr) to mutually passivate surface defects of I and formamidinium (FA) vacancies by multi-coordination. This passivation led to an obvious decrease in interfacial defect-state density and greatly improved exciton and carrier lifetime for the perovskite film. Moreover, MCP surface treatment pushes the perovskite surface Fermi level closer to that of ETL, thereby enhancing interfacial electron extraction. As a result, MCP-based HTL-free PSC achieved a record efficiency of 26.40% (25.92% certified). The encapsulated device retains 94.8% of its initial efficiency after 1,000 h of light soaking. The generality of the MCP strategy also generated a competitive efficiency of 23.66% for 1.68 eV wide-band-gap PSCs.

Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and can be incorporated into perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to improve cell performance. However, the incorporation of Au NPs in bulk films of PSCs requires large concentration to keep interval distance and would cause worse device performance. In this work, a universal strategy for significant increasing power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs through incorporating high aspect ratio Au nanorods (NRs)@SiO 2 into perovskite/spiro-OMeTAD interface is demonstrated. The key feature of this approach is that we can take advantage of the SPR at a lower concentration and the Au NRs have larger light scattering section than AuNPs. It is found that the SPR and scattering effect of Au NRs lead to a broad enhancement of photon absorption. Furthermore, a superior enhanced charge separation process in the Au NRs incorporated device is also observed. Benefitting from this cooperative plasmonic effect of Au NRs in optical and electrical aspects, both short-circuit current density and open-circuit voltage are improved, resulting in the new device delivering a PCE up to 17.39% from 14.39%. This result further supports that Au NRs can play a more effective SPR effect at perovskite/spiro-OMeTAD interface, rather than incorporating them into bulk films.

The large voltage loss (Vloss) mainly stems from the mismatch between the perovskite film and electron transport layer in CsPbI2Br-based all-inorganic perovskite solar cells (I-PSCs), which restricts the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of devices. To address this issue, potassium benzoate (BAP) is first introduced as a bifunctional passivation material to regulate the TiO2/CsPbI2Br interface, reduce the Vloss, and improve the photovoltaic performance of CsPbI2Br-based I-PSCs. Eventually, the champion PCE of CsPbI2Br-based I-PSCs without a hole transport layer modified by BAP (Target-PSCs) improves to 14.90% from the 12.14% of reference PSCs. The open-circuit voltage (Voc) increases to 1.27 V from the initial 1.14 V after BAP modification. A series of characterizations show that BAP modification can not only optimize the energy level alignment of I-PSCs but also passivize the surface defects caused by uncoordinated Cs+/Pb2+. Moreover, the Target-PSCs without encapsulation demonstrate better thermal stability, which can maintain 107.6% of the original PCE after annealing at 160 °C for 140 min in humid air. While the reference PSCs only maintain 76.5% of their initial PCE after annealing at the same process. This work provides a simple strategy to modify the buried interface and improve the performance of CsPbI2Br-based I-PSCs.

Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) is strong candidate for hole transport in perovskite light emitting diodes (PeLEDs) due to their cost-effectiveness, deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), and high hole mobility. However, its inherent polymetallic ions usually deteriorate the quality of the perovskite emission layer (EML) affecting device performance. In this study, a bidirectional anchoring strategy is proposed by adding 15-crown-5 ether (15C5) into CZTS hole transport layer (HTL) to suppress the reaction between HTL and EML. The 15C5 molecule interacts with Cu + , Zn 2+ and Sn 2+ cations forming host–guest complexes to impede their migration, which is elucidated by density functional theory calculations. Additionally, 15C5 can neutralize lead (Pb) defects by the abundant oxygen (O) and high electronegative cavities to reduce the nonradiative recombination of FAPbBr 3 film. This bidirectional anchoring strategy effectively improves hole charge transport efficiency and suppresses nonradiative recombination at the HTL/EML interface. As a result, the optimized PeLEDs present a 3.5 times peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) from 3.12% to 11.08% and the maximum luminance ( L max ) increased from 24495 to 50584 cd m −2 . These findings offer innovative insights into addressing the metal ion migration issue commonly observed in inorganic HTLs.

The crystallization degree of perovskite (PVK) crystals is vital for solar cell efficiency, as it affects charge carrier transport. Researchers are using organic molecules to improve PVK crystallization, but face challenges with charge transport efficiency at interfaces due to the principle of maximum entropy. Here, living supramolecular assemblies (LSA) were prepared in the two-dimensional confined space of layered double hydroxide (LDH). The carbonyl (C O) functional groups in LSA assembled from terephthalic acid (TPA) coordinated with the uncoordinated Pb 2+ ions in the PVK light-absorbing layer, passivating grain boundary defects. Importantly, the ordered charge transport in LSA can decrease the carrier complexation, which are commonly the main causes of charge carrier recombination and the decline in device performance. Thus, following the addition of TPA-LSA, carbon-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) processed entirely in air achieved a maximum photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.86 %. This work provides an effective strategy for the enhancing the efficiency PSCs by using the supramolecular materials.

Hole transport layer free perovskite solar cells (HTL-Free PSCs) have attracted extensive attention due to their advantages of simple structure and low cost. However, due to the serious energy level mismatch caused by the direct contact between the perovskite layer and the opposite electrode, the space for improving the efficiency of HTL-Free PSCs is greatly limited. We use Eu 3+ doped CsPbBr 3 quantum dots (QD) to modify the interface between MAPbI 3 :Na layer and C electrode, and study its effect on the surface defect passivation, interface energy level arrangement and carrier transport behavior in the device. It was found that compared with the interfacial modification of CsPbBr 3 QD alone, the interfacial modification of CsPbBr 3 :Eu QD could effectively solve the problem of energy level mismatch in HTL-Free PSCs, resulting in a remarkable improvement of conversion efficiency from 9.01 % to 12.95 %. Furthermore, electron beam induced current (EBIC) was used to prove that CsPbBr 3 :Eu QD interface modification significantly improved the hole collection ability. This provides an experimental basis and theoretical guidance for the optimization of the efficiency of other types of transport layer free photovoltaic devices.
