Lithium (Li) metal anodes (LMA) are regarded as one of the most promising anode candidates due to their high theoretical capacity; however, Li dendrites and the volume expansion issues make their practical application very challenging. Herein, a lightweight and high nitrogen (N)-doped carbon fiber with grafted sphere-like carbon nanotubes (HN-SCNTgCFs) has been successfully fabricated as a Li platting matrix by a two-step strategy of surface engineering including solid resource assisted chemical vapor deposition (solid-CVD) and subsequent electrochemical conversion. Benefitting from this HN-SCNTgCF matrix with a fast Li+ conductor (Li3N), the HN-SCNTgCFs || Li system behaves completely stable, i.e., 900 cycles with a CE of ∼100%; the quasi-Li-anode-free HN-SCNTgCFs || LiFePO4 (LFP) cell delivers a long lifespan of 800 cycles; and the Li-HN-SCNTgCFs || LFP cell exhibits long cycling stability (1000 cycles) with a low capacity decay of 0.057 mA h g–1 per cycle. These excellent results suggest that surface engineering is a feasible strategy for constructing an effective Li matrix to stabilize LMA.

The uneven deposition of lithium ions has raised safety concerns related to the growth of lithium dendrites on the surface of lithium metal batteries. In this work, an in situ formed Li 3 N interlayer is introduced to regulate the deposition of lithium ions on the lithium metal surface effectively. The Li 3 N interlayer is formed on the lithium metal surface by the reaction of nitrogen gas (N 2 ) released from the reaction layer at a specific temperature. The in situ Li 3 N interlayer enables the Li||Li symmetric cell exhibits cycling stability over 1200 h at 0.2 mA cm −2 due to the lower nucleation overpotential, demonstrating excellent Li plating/stripping performance. Furthermore, density function theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Li + preferentially adsorb onto the Li 3 N (001) plane and diffuse along the surface during the Li + migration process. This in situ Li 3 N interlayer effectively inhibits dendrite growth and the occurrence of side reactions, enabling stable cycling of Li||LiFePO 4 cell for over 700 cycles at 0.5 C. Additionally, Li||LiCoO 2 full cell also exhibits a capacity retention of 81.6 % after 500 cycles with a specific discharge capacity of 80.8 mAh/g and a coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.4 %. This modification strategy is an effective approach for enhancing interfacial stability of solid-state lithium batteries.

The electrode/electrolyte interfaces play an important role in the electrochemical reaction kinetics to alleviate the severe polarization and voltage hysteresis in lithium primary batteries. Herein, C 5 F 5 N is proposed as an electrolyte additive to tune the characteristics of the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. The Li/CF x primary battery with C 5 F 5 N additive exhibits an excellent discharge-specific capacity of 981.4 mAh g −1 (0.1 C), a remarkable high-rate capability of 598 mAh g −1 (15 C), and an outstanding energy/power density of 1068.7 Wh kg −1 /24362.5 W kg −1 . It also shows remarkable storage performance with 717.2 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C after storage at 55 °C for 2 months. The excellent performance of the Li/CF x batteries is closely related to the improved and stable Li 3 N/LiF-rich homogeneous interfaces induced by the C 5 F 5 N additive, which results in uniform distribution of Li + flux, facilitated electrochemical kinetics, and increased rate capability of Li/CF x battery. Therefore, C 5 F 5 N is expected to be a promising electrolyte additive, and the related electrode/electrolyte interface engineering provides an effective and facile strategy to increase the performance of the lithium primary battery.

All-solid-state lithium–sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) have attracted wide attention due to their ultrahigh theoretical energy density and the ability of completely avoiding the shuttle effect. However, the further development of ASSLSBs is limited by the poor kinetic properties of the solid electrode interface. It remains a great challenge to achieve good kinetic properties, by common strategies to substitute sulfur–transition metal and organosulfur composites for sulfur without reducing the specific capacity of ASSLSBs. In this study, a sulfur–(Ketjen Black)–(bistrifluoromethanesulfonimide lithium salt) (S-KB-LiTFSI) composite is constructed by introducing LiTFSI into the S-KB composite. The initial discharge capacity reaches up to 1483 mA h g–1, benefited from the improved ionic conductivity and diffusion kinetics of the S-KB-LiTFSI composite, where numerous LiF interphases with a Li3N component are in situ formed during cycling. Combined with DFT calculations, it is found that the migration barriers of LiF and Li3N are much smaller than that of the Li6PS5Cl solid electrolyte. The fast ionic conductors of LiF and Li3N not only enhance the Li+ transfer efficiency but also improve the interfacial stability. Therefore, the assembled ASSLSBs operate stably for 600 cycles at 200 mA g–1, and this study provides an effective strategy for the further development of ASSLSBs.

Silicon monoxide (SiO) has garnered significant attention as a promising anode material for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries due to its lower volume expansion relative to pure silicon (Si) and its higher capacity compared to graphite. Nevertheless, the poor intrinsic electronic/ionic conductivity and the low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of SiO result in inferior rate capability and inadequate practical energy density, hindering its commercial viability. Here, a simultaneous prelithiation and in situ nitrogen (N) doping approach for SiO utilizing lithium nitride (Li 3 N), which significantly enhances both the ICE and lithium-ion (Li + ) diffusion kinetics, is proposed. N atoms are not only incorporated into the carbon layer on the surface of SiO but also form a uniformly distributed amorphous Li 2 SiN 2 phase within the SiO, facilitating Li + transport. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that the Li + diffusion coefficient of amorphous Li 2 SiN 2 is significantly higher than that of other crystalline phases present in the prelithiated SiO matrix. The 1.5 Ah pouch cells further validate that the SiON-0.175/graphite||NCM811 exhibits a high ICE of 88.06%, and it retains 51.5% of its capacity even under 4C fast charging conditions. This study offers new insights into the development of next-generation SiO anode materials with high ICE and high-rate performance.

Optimization of lithium metal anode is a pivotal part in facilitating the evolution of next-generation high energy density solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, the practical application of lithium anode in solid-state LMBs is limited by uncontrollable dendrite growth and the poor interfacial contact with solid electrolyte. Herein, a 40 µm thin lithium composite anode based on the AlN-embedded reduced graphene oxide (rGO) scaffold synthesized via one-step molten lithium infusion is proposed. The resulting lithiophilic Li-Al alloy and high ion-conductive Li 3 N in situ constructed the lithium ion diffusing highways inside electrode, enabling a well-oriented Li deposition and effectively inhibiting the dendrite growth. Combined with in-situ polymerization and Li 3 N-modified solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), the composite anodes can prolong the lifespan of symmetric cell to 2100 h at 0.2 mA cm −2 /0.2 mAh cm −2 in carbonate-based solid polymer electrolytes. Moreover, LAG||LiFePO 4 full cells also excelled in cycling capability and rate performance. This modified electrode offers a promising synergistic solution for designing high-performance solid-state LMBs.

Li metal is promising as the anode for next-generation Li-ion batteries; however, uncontrollable dendrite growth and severe side reactions between the Li metal and electrolyte greatly restrict its commercialization. Here, a 3D porous protective layer constructed by core@shell-Cu@Li 3 N particles is developed to solve the above issues. This protective layer is easily prepared just by one-step dip coating in Cu(NO 3 ) 2 /N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solution. Due to rapid Li + transport and good wettability of the protective layer, it effectively modulates Li + flux and thus homogenizes Li deposition. More importantly, as confirmed by both the experimental results and phase-field simulations, the 3D porous protective layer enforces the Li dendrite to laterally grow to form an interconnected network, which causes that the subsequent Li deposition is constrained and filled in the inner space rather than savage growth. Therefore, both the symmetric battery and full cell constructed by the protected Li electrode displays much longer lifespan than the one with bare Li even in unstable liquid carbonate electrolyte. Also, this protective layer is demonstrated to be compatible with Li 1+x Al x Ti 2−x (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) solid-state electrolyte by suppressing the side reactions. This work paves a new and facile strategy for developing high-performance Li metal anode.

High safety, high ion conductivity, and stable interface contacts are of significant importance for the application of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) in solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs). In this study, SSEs with high ion conductivity and safety were constructed by in-situ polymerization of poly butyl acrylate (PBA) based electrolytes in the three-dimensional (3D) pores of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber membrane, and embedded with ion conductor succinonitrile (SN), fluorinated ethylene carbonate (FEC), and imidazolium-based ionic liquid (IL). The test results and microscopic structural analysis indicate that SN is uniformly dispersed in PVDF, effectively reducing the crystallinity of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) and constructing a 3D interconnected lithium-ion conduction network. Consequently, an ion conductivity of 4.89 mS cm −1 was achieved at 25°C. Meanwhile, density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that imidazolium-based ionic liquid can adjust the dissolution characteristics of Li + through weak interactions with the polymer framework and strong coordination with TFSI - . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization revealed that the imidazolium-based ionic liquid can form a stable solid electrolyte interface enriched with Li 3 N on the lithium-metal surface. The resulting SPEs demonstrated excellent ion conductivity, a high Li + transfer number (t Li + = 0.739), and a nanofiber-reinforced interpenetrating framework with a tensile strength of 17.15 MPa. Furthermore, the LiFePO 4 (LFP)||Li battery equipped with PBA-PVDF-SN (modified with IL) exhibited excellent electrochemical performance at room temperature with a capacity retention of 87.4 % after 800 cycles at 0.5C.

Li metal anodes are considered among the most ideal candidates for next generation batteries owing to their lowest electrochemical potential and high theoretical capacity. However, the highly reactive Li metal is subject to continuous side reactions with conventional carbonate electrolytes. The resulting unsatisfying solid electrolyte interface (SEI) induces severe Li dendritic growth. Therefore, there is an urgent need to effectively control the components of SEI to solve the electrolyte/anode interface electrochemical instability. Herein, LiDFP and LiNO3 are introduced into the electrolyte to modulate the composition of the SEI. Owing to the lower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of LiDFP and LiNO3 relative to those of the solvents, LiDFP and LiNO3 have preferential reducibility and thus generate a stable SEI containing LiF and Li3N, which has swift ion migration kinetics and homogeneous Li deposition behaviors. As a result, our electrolyte modified by additives enables the anode to achieve an excellent coulombic efficiency of 98% and exhibits an ultra-long cycling life of over 700 h in symmetrical cells. Li metal full cells paired with the LFP or NCM811 cathode also have excellent long cycling performance. This work demonstrates that additive-modified electrolytes are a viable and simple strategy for the evolution of Li metal batteries.

Cubic boron nitride (cBN) with superhardness exhibits many exceptional properties rivaling diamond and holds great promise for diverse applications such as advanced cutting tools and high-performance electronic devices, where high-quality single crystals are often highly demanded. However, the synthesis of its large single crystals has been a long-standing challenge, mainly due to a more complex reaction process involved in the growth of cBN when compared with that of diamond, making its growth mechanism largely elusive. In this work, we present a comprehensive investigation on the growth of cBN crystals through a seed method under high pressure using specially designed growth strategies with Li3N as a transport agent, leading to the discovery of the crucial role that the atomic transport rate plays in growing its crystals. The seed crystals are revealed to undergo a reversible cubic → hexagonal → cubic transition sequence at high temperature during a two-step compression process. In addition, the phase diagrams for the formation of cBN in different transport agents are also explored. These findings provide new insights into the mechanism for growing large cBN crystals.

Graphite materials are widely used as electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage. N-doping is an effective method for enhancing the electrochemical properties of graphite. A novel one-step N-doping method for complete and compact carbon paper was proposed for molten salt electrolysis in the LiCl-KCl-Li 3 N system. The results show that the degree of graphitization of carbon paper can be improved by the electrolysis of molten salts, especially at 2.0 V. Nitrogen gas was produced at the anode and nitrogen atoms can substitute carbon atoms of carbon paper at different sites to create nitrogen doping during the electrolysis process. The doping content of N in carbon paper is up to 13.0wt%. There were three groups of nitrogen atoms, i.e. quaternary N (N-Q), pyrrolic N (N-5), and pyridinic N (N-6) in N-doping carbon paper. N-doping carbon paper as an Al-ion battery cathode shows strong charge-recharge properties.

Lithium (Li) metal battery is one of the ideal candidates for the next-generation high-energy-density batteries , but its practical application is still plagued by its large volume change, low coulombic efficiency (CE), and safety issues related to dendrite growth. This work describes a potential solution to these issues using a cross-linked Li 9 Al 4 -Li 3 N-AlN (LLA) structure as a stable host for Li metal anode . The in situ-formed uniform Li 9 Al 4 and Li 3 N sites on AlN nano-clusters can suppress dendrite growth during the Li plating/stripping process. The intrinsic lithiophilicity of Li 9 Al 4 sites with adjacent Li 3 N attracts Li + ions for fast migration and uniform plating/stripping. These unique features lead to dimensional stability of Li@LLA composite anodes (1540 mAh g −1 and 1600 mAh cm −3 ). High-rate, high-capacity cycling of Li metal anodes has been maintained with a CE of ~98% in carbonate-based electrolytes. High capacity retention of 90.1% is achieved for a Li@LLA||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 full cell at the 200th cycle. Therefore, the LLA structure with a simple fabrication process could be a promising candidate to enhance the safety of next-generation Li metal batteries.
