Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) composites modified with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon coating (LTO@C/CNTs) were synthesized by a simple solid-state reaction. The carbon-coated layers reduce the growth of the primary particles, inhibit interface side reactions and increase electron conductivity, so CNTs-modified LTO can form a conductive network and improve the diffusion path of lithium ions. The LTO@C/CNTs composites show a high-rate capability (150 mAh g −1 at 10 C, 145 mAh g −1 at 20 C) with good cycling performance (90.1% and 82.8% capacity retentions after 1000 cycles at 10 C and 20 C, respectively). In addition, superior electrochemical performance is also demonstrated in a full cell with a LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) cathode and LTO@C/CNTs anode (97.1% capacity retentions after 200 cycles at 1 C). The carbon coating and CNTs-modified in LTO can reduce the polarization of potential difference and charge-transfer resistance, improve the diffusion coefficient of lithium ions, and lead to high rate performance and cycle stability.

Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) is regarded as a promising lithium-ion battery anode due to its stable cyclic performance and reliable operation safety. The moderate rate performance originated from the poor intrinsic electron and lithium-ion conductivities of the LTO has significantly limited its wide applications. A facile scalable synthesis of hierarchical Li4Ti5O12/C nanohybrids with supersmall LTO nanoparticles (ca. 17 nm in diameter) homogeneously embedded in the continuous submicrometer-sized carbon matrix is developed. Difunctional methacrylate monomers are used as solvent and carbon source to generate TiO2/C nanohybrid, which is in situ converted to LTO/C via a solid-state reaction procedure. The structure, morphology, crystallinity, composition, tap density, and electrochemical performance of the LTO/C nanohybrid are systematically investigated. Comparing to the control sample of the commercial LTO composited with carbon, the reversible specific capacity after 1000 cycles at 175 mA g–1 and rate performance at high current densities (875, 1750, and 3500 mA g–1) of the Li4Ti5O12/C nanohybrid have been significantly improved. The enhanced electrochemical performance is due to the unique structure feature, where the supersmall LTO nanoparticles are homogeneously embedded in the continuous carbon matrix. Good tap density is also achieved with the LTO/C nanohybrid due to its hierarchical micro-/nanohybrid structure, which is even higher than that of the commercial LTO powder.

An anode material with Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 nanocrystals entangled by carbon nanotubes is prepared by polymerization of titanium tetra-isopropoxide with ethylene glycol in the presentence of carbon nanotubes. The resulted polymer is hydrolyzed in LiOH/H 2 O solution, and then thermally decomposed to obtain the topic anode material. The characterizations show that the synthesis method yields a type of material that has both of high electronic conductivity and high lithium ion diffusion rate. The material has stable deep discharge capability (down to 0.01 V), high specific capacity (237 mAhg −1 at 0.30 Ag -1 ), and long cycling life time (254 mAhg −1 at 0.10 Ag -1 , more than 500 discharge/charge cycles). High specific capacities of 258 and 158 mAhg −1 are obtained at current densities of 0.10 and 3.00 Ag -1 , respectively. The deep discharge capability of the material offers an average voltage below 1.0 V (vs metal Li), which is lower than that of pristine Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (1.55 V).

Silicon (Si) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity. However, it suffers from poor capacity retention during cycling due to mechanical stresses, pulverization, and an unstable solid electrolyte interface. One practical approach to mitigate the problem is a coating design, where nano-sized silicon is encapsulated within a selected protective layer. In this study, silicon nanoparticles have been coated with a protective layer of Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) ceramic and prepared using a water-based sodium alginate binder. It is found that the Si@LTO composites can be combined with graphite to improve battery performance further. The composite electrodes have been tested in half cells at C/10 and 1C rates. The best Si@LTO and graphite composite has an initial high capacity (∼900 mAh g−1 at C/10 and ∼600 mAh g−1 at 1C) and good capacity retention. It is found that this capacity retention is superior to Si@LTO alone and a binary composite of silicon with graphite. These Si@LTO + graphite composites are a promising way to integrate silicon into the development of stable and high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries.

A nanoparticle Mg-doped Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 with a grain size of 20–30 nm has been successfully synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method . The first-principle simulations are employed to theoretically study the crystal structure, unit cell volume, lattice parameters , and band gaps. Galvanostatic charge–discharge tests have been carried out, using the as-prepared Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 and Mg-doped Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 as the working electrodes with a voltage range of 0.5–2.5 V vs. Li + /Li. The tests show promising results with high capacity and long term stability. When discharging at 350 mA g −1 (corresponding to a 2 C rate), the discharge capacity remains at 170 mAh g −1 over 100 cycles. As the C-rate rises to an ultrafast charge–discharge rate of 50 C, the discharge capacity can still retain at 115 mAh g −1 . The excellent electrochemical performance is due to both the nanomorphology and better conductivity after Mg doping. The results show that the Mg-doped Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 can act as a fast charge–discharge anode material for high rate lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

The electrochemical oscillation of Li-ion batteries is a novel electrochemical phenomenon, which has been discovered in two-phase materials of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 and LiCrTiO 4 . To analyze the electrochemical oscillation in this work, a three-electrode coin cell was designed and assembled with a specialized reference electrode, based on the conventional two-electrode coin cell. In the three-electrode coin cell, a Li-deficient Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 material exhibits a distinct electrochemical oscillation during the galvanostatic charge process, and its electrochemical kinetics was studied by in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Compared with two other Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 materials without electrochemical oscillation, the Li-deficient Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 material had an evidently larger resistance of the SEI layer (R sei ) and charge transfer resistance (R ct ) in the EIS spectra. When the electrochemical oscillation emerged, the Warburg impedance (W s ) dramatically transformed into the capacitive impedance in the EIS spectra, indicating that the intraparticle phase separation had been replaced by the interparticle phase separation. This study further confirmed the reaction process of electrochemical oscillation proposed in our previous work, so as to finally reveal the underlying mechanism of this novel phenomenon.

Interfacial chemistry plays an important role in understanding electrode process kinetics of many chemical reactions, e.g. photocatalyst , electrocatalyst , and electrochemistry . In this context, a systematic investigation is conducted to reveal the mechanism of electrode-electrolyte interface between Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) spinel and electrolyte molecule, aiming to tackle the notorious package swelling issue in rechargeable batteries. Using the gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and electron microscopy techniques, the interplays between the LTO and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) are uncovered to be a synergetic chemical catalytic process involving the truncated oxygens of the surface Ti O dangling bonds , which are negatively polarized as the catalytic centers with the strong Lewis basicity . The Lewis basic centers catalyze the nucleophilic substitution of DMC with only trace amounts of water, resulting in the gaseous products, such as CO 2 and methanol. These findings deepen the understandings on the fundamental chemistry and catalysis of solid-liquid interfaces, especially the metal oxide-organic interfaces.

Along with the rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) and intermittent renewable energy, energy storage for EVs has received much attention over the past decade. Rechargeable batteries have been considered a feasible solution to utilize intermittent renewable energy with higher efficiency. Rechargeable batteries with promising safety, lifespan, low expenditure, durable components, or mature electric control systems are desired for energy storage systems . Recently, solid electrolyte-based liquid lithium (SELL) batteries have demonstrated excellent performances and great potential for energy storage applications by manipulating different cathode materials . Herein, a new type of SELL battery with Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 cathode (SELL-LTO battery) is reported. Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 is a distinctive electrode material with good rate performance, high-standard safety, moderate cost, and superior cycling stability at 280 °C, which make it an excellent cathode material for SELL batteries. The assembled SELL-LTO full cell has been cycled 100 times with an average energy efficiency of 92%. Moreover, the cell also exhibits good rate performance and can recover after being cooled and thawed.

Liquid metal battery (LMB) is a promising candidate for grid energy storage due to its long cycle life, low cost and easy scale-up. However, it has some drawbacks like low cell voltage and high operating temperature. In this work, we used the solid lithium titanate (Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 ) instead of the liquid alloy as the cathode to promote the cell voltage and decrease the operating temperature. This liquid-solid metal battery was able to work at 350 °C by applying liquid lithium as anode, Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 -based material as cathode and LiCl-LiBr-KBr molten salt as electrolyte. The acquired Li | LiCl-LiBr-KBr | Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 @C Cu battery cycled at 1 C rate (3.61 mA cm −2 ) for over 100 cycles with 0.02% capacity decay per cycle. An overall energy efficiency of 80%, coulombic efficiency of 96%, 1.2 V discharge voltage and cathode utilization of 82% were obtained. Furthermore, the effects of the electronic conductivity of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 -based materials, temperature and current density on the electrochemical performance of the cell were investigated.

In this work spinel Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) was successfully synthesized via flash sintering technique at a furnace temperature of 580°C within only 5 min for the first time. Phase evolution, microstructures, and electrochemical properties were investigated and compared with conventionally synthesized LTO. The flash sintered LTO shows good crystallinity, high purity, and small particle size. More importantly, it suggests that the flash sintering process could help inhibit lithium volatilization and control the particle size, which is vital to the improvement of the lithium-ion diffusion process and battery performance. Compared with the conventionally synthesized samples, the flash sintered LTO exhibits higher specific capacities, better cycling stabilities, and rate capabilities. Therefore, flash sintering shows potentials in improving the electrochemical performance of anode materials, and thus suggests an efficient strategy for rapid synthesis of high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

The electrochemical signals are very important to analyze and regulate the electrochemical systems, and the electrochemical oscillation is a newly discovered electrochemical signal in Li-ion batteries (LIBs), including the voltage and current oscillations. In this work, the Li4Ti5O12 was prepared using a home-made spray-drying instrument and high-temperature sintering, and its electrochemical oscillation was studied in LIBs. The electrochemical oscillation arose when the as-prepared Li4Ti5O12 precursor was sintered in a powder (not pellet) form, and it became stronger by reducing the lithium content in Li4Ti5O12. There are two types of electrochemical oscillation as a single-period oscillation or a double-period oscillation, and they can be transformed through varying the operating temperature, the current rate, and the conductive agent ratio, which might be owing to the electrochemical kinetics of Li4Ti5O12 electrodes. Combining the sintered forms and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results, whether there is some fresh surface (formed by grinding the sintered pellet) becomes a typical difference between the powder-sintered and pellet-sintered Li4Ti5O12, which would affect the nucleation step and the reaction kinetics, and we proposed a possible reaction process of the electrochemical oscillation during the galvanostatic charging process of Li4Ti5O12 in LIBs.

Improving the electronic conductivity and lithium-ion diffusion ability is quite essential for Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) anode materials. Herein, we propose a synergistic strategy to facilitate Li+ insertion/extraction and conductivity by integrating Na2TiO3 coating, Na+ doping, and oxygen vacancy engineering. The rate capability (115 mAh/g vs 70 mAh/g at 5 C) and cyclic performance (91% retention vs 58% at 10 C after 500 cycles) have all been enhanced greatly, and the underlying modulation mechanism has been revealed. First, the Na2TiO3 coating layer mitigates the corrosion of the electrolyte and inhibits the side reactions between the electrode and electrolyte. Second, Na+ doping optimizes the crystal structure, expanding the lattice parameter as well as the unit cell volume and decreasing the bond length of Li1–O, which effectively facilitates Li+ diffusion. In addition, the introduction of oxygen vacancies promotes more Ti4+ to be reduced to Ti3+ and narrows the band gap of LTO material, thus improving the electronic conductivity. This “three-in-one” synergistic strategy sheds some new light on tuning crystal structure and electronic structure for designing high-performance electrode materials.
