High-nickel ternary material is one of the most promising cathode materials with high energy density. However, this material has the disadvantages of poor cycling stability, poor thermal stability, and low safety. The synergetic effect of single crystal, element doping, and surface coating is an effective way to improve its electrochemical performance. In this work, the particle size of the single-crystal LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 (NCM811) material was controlled by LiCl–KCl flux, and the internal/external synergy of Ti4+ doping and LiTi2O4 coating was realized by the pretreatment of Ti(OC4H9)4 and a subsequent new temperature-changing sintering process. The single-crystal structure greatly improved the crushing of material, the Ti4+ doping effectively broadened the lattice spacing and stabilized the layered structure, and the uniform LiTi2O4 coating effectively eliminated excess lithium salts and promoted the stability of the interface structure. The electrochemical test results showed that the modified materials had excellent electrochemical properties, especially a high lithium-ion diffusion rate and high cycle stability. Therefore, it will provide a solid technical support for the synthesis of high-performance single-crystal high-nickel ternary cathode materials.

Stable lithium metal negative electrodes are desirable to produce high-energy batteries. However, when practical testing conditions are applied, lithium metal is unstable during battery cycling. Here, we propose poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate-co-sodium benzenesulfonate) (PHS) as negative electrode protective layer. The PHS contains soft poly (2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) and poly(sodium p-styrene sulfonate), which improve electrode flexibility, connection with the Cu current collector and transport of Li ions. Transmission electron cryomicroscopy measurements reveal that PHS induces the formation of a solid electrolyte interphase with a fluorinated rigid and crystalline internal structure. Furthermore, theoretical calculations suggest that the -SO 3 - group of poly(sodium p-styrene sulfonate) promotes Li-ion motion towards interchain migration through cation-dipole interaction, thus, enabling uniform Li-ion diffusion. Electrochemical measurements of Li | |PHS-coated-Cu coin cells demonstrate an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.46% at 1 mA/cm 2 , 6 mAh/cm 2 and 25 °C. Moreover, when the PHS-coated Li metal negative electrode is paired with a high-areal-capacity LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 O 2 -based positive electrode in multi-layer pouch cell configuration, the battery delivers an initial capacity of 6.86 Ah (corresponding to a specific energy of 489.7 Wh/kg) and, a 91.1% discharge capacity retention after 150 cycles at 2.5 mA/cm 2 , 25 °C and 172 kPa.

To suppress capacity degradation of Ni-rich LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 O 2 (NCM) cathodes with radially oriented primary grains, a strategy for homogeneous Sr 2+ doping was developed by controlling the Sr 2+ diffusion path from the surface into the bulk. Introducing SrO during sintering enabled Sr 2+ to penetrate along the radially aligned primary grains, achieving uniform distribution throughout the material. The NCM-Sr cathode with 0.7% Sr 2+ exhibited superior rate performance, delivering specific capacities of 182.5, 172.3, and 165.7 mAh g −1 at 1C, 5C, and 10C, respectively, compared with 167.3, 148.1, and 143.2 mAh g −1 for the undoped sample. Uniform Sr 2+ incorporation, facilitated by radial grain alignment, effectively mitigates localized strain accumulation during cycling, enhancing structural stability. For the first time, NCM cathodes were analyzed using deep learning in conjunction with detailed morphological information; the analysis confirmed that controlled particle orientation and uniform small primary particles significantly improve electrochemical performance. These Sr-doped cathodes demonstrate extended cycle life, stable voltage profiles, and excellent high-rate capabilities, highlighting an effective strategy for advancing Ni-rich ternary cathode materials in high-energy lithium-ion batteries.

The silicon-based anodes are one of the promising anodes to achieve the high energy density of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). Nano silicon (nSi) is considered as a suitable anode material for assembling sheet-type sulfide ASSBs using thin free-standing Li 6 PS 5 Cl (LPSC) membrane without causing short circuit. However, nSi anodes face a significant challenge in terms of rapid capacity degradation during cycling. To address this issue, dual-function Li 4.4 Si modified nSi anode sheets are developed, in which Li 4.4 Si serves a dual role by not only providing additional Li + but also stabilizing the anode structure with its low Young's modulus upon cycling. Sheet-type ASSBs equipped with the Li 4.4 Si modified nSi anode, thin LPSC membrane, and LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 O 2 (NCM811) cathode demonstrate exceptional cycle stability, with a capacity retention of 96.16% at 0.5 C (1.18 mA cm −2 ) after 100 cycles and maintain stability for 400 cycles. Furthermore, a remarkable cell-level energy density of 303.9 Wh kg −1 is achieved at a high loading of 5.22 mAh cm −2 , representing a leading level of sulfide ASSBs using electrolyte membranes at room temperature. Consequently, the chemically stable slurry process implemented in the fabrication of Li 4.4 Si-modified nSi anode sheet paves the way for scalable applications of high-performance sulfide ASSBs.

In this work, the effect of potassium permanganate (KMnO 4 ) pre-oxidation treatment on the electrochemical properties of LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 O 2 (NCM811) cathode materials was investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests revealed that the pre-oxidation treatment promoted the oxidation of Ni 2+ to Ni 3+ and the formation of a stable Mn-rich surface. Electrochemical testing showed that the electrochemical performance of the NCM811 material pre-oxidized with an appropriate amount of KMnO 4 (811–3) was significantly improved at both ambient (25 ℃) and elevated temperatures (55 ℃) compared to the untreated sample. Additionally, the air stability of 811–3 was enhanced. Specifically, the pre-oxidation treatment increased the oxidation state of nickel, minimized side reactions with CO 2 and moisture in the air, and improved cycling stability, rate performance, and lithium-ion diffusion. It also resulted in a lower self-discharge rate, ensuring better long-term voltage retention. These results indicated that KMnO 4 pre-oxidation is an effective strategy for improving the electrochemical performance of NCM811 and has the potential for application to other Ni-rich cathode materials.

Developing battery materials with high specific energy and long cycle life is a crucial core technology that needs to be broken. High-nickel and high-voltage are the development trends of cathode materials, but the structural instability seriously deteriorate electrochemical performance. Herein, to solve the above problem and obtain structurally stable high-voltage nickel-rich cathode materials, a novel high-voltage spinel-structured cladding layer was designed by wet chemistry and coated on the surface of LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 O 2 material. LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 with spinel structure possesses good structural compatibility with layered cathode materials and has efficient three-dimensional Li-ion diffusion paths, which can meet the needs of Li-ion diffusion kinetics. Meanwhile, LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 has a high operating voltage and a very stable thermodynamic structure in the charging state which can inhibit the corrosion and interfacial side reactions of the cathode material, thus stabilizing the crystal structure. The results show that 1 wt% LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 -coated sample displayed the best electrochemical performance, with a discharge capacity of 203.7 mAh g −1 at 1 C, the capacity retention of 77.71% after 200 cycles, and even after 300 cycles, the capacity retention still reached 64.36%.

Controllable engineering of thin lithium (Li) metal is essential for increasing the energy density of solid-state batteries and clarifying the interfacial evolution mechanisms of a lithium metal negative electrode. However, fabricating a thin lithium electrode faces significant challenges due to the fragility and high viscosity of Li metal. Herein, through facile treatment of Ta-doped Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZTO) with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, its surface Li 2 CO 3 species is converted into a lithiophilic layer with LiCF 3 SO 3 and LiF components. It enables the thickness control of Li metal negative electrodes, ranging from 0.78 μm to 30 μm. Quasi-solid-state lithium-metal battery with an optimized 7.54 μm-thick lithium metal negative electrode, a commercial LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 O 2 positive electrode, and a negative/positive electrode capacity ratio of 1.1 shows a 500 cycles lifespan with a final discharge specific capacity of 99 mAh g −1 at 2.35 mA cm −2 and 25 °C. Through multi-scale characterizations of the thin lithium negative electrode, we clarify the multi-dimensional compositional evolution and failure mechanisms of lithium-deficient and -rich regions (0.78 μm and 7.54 μm), on its surface, inside it, or at the Li/LLZTO interface.
