A low energy-consuming phase change absorbent of MAE/DGM/H2O for CO2 capture

Shumin Hong,Ting Li,Min Xiao,Teerawat Sema,Hongxia Gao,Zhiwu Liang

The concept of phase change absorbents has been widely studied as a novel and low-energy consumption option for CO 2 capture. This work screened diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (DGM) from 17 physical solvent species as a better phase change accelerator for absorbents of 2-(methylamino)ethanol (MAE)-physical solvent-H 2 O. Then, the optimized mass ratio of 30:49:21 for MAE-DGM-H 2 O solution was investigated with phase change behaviors, CO 2 absorption–desorption performance, cyclic capacity, and energy consumption. The experimental results showed that the cyclic CO 2 capacity reached 1.32 mol/L and the CO 2 -rich phase made up only 50.4 % of the total volume for the 30 wt%MAE-49 wt%DGM-21 wt%H 2 O, as well as its regenerative energy consumption was 40 % lower than that of 30 wt% monoethanolamine (MEA) solution. Also, the viscosity and surface tension gap of the CO 2 -rich phase and CO 2 -lean phase for the optimized absorbent were studied. It was observed that those gaps increase with the increasing mass ratio of DGM. In addition, the possible phase change mechanism was proposed by using the dipole moment values of components calculated by Gaussian (B3LYP/6-31G) coupled with 13 C NMR spectra.

Thermodynamics and modeling of efficient MAE-TGBE-H2O phase-separating CO2 absorbents

Xin Ta,Qiang Sun,Min Xiao,Zhiwu Liang,Hongxia Gao

Phase-separating absorbents show promise for reducing energy consumption, as desorption requires heating only the CO 2 -enriched phase. This study investigates triethylene glycol monobutyl ether (TGBE) as a phase-separation promoter for the N-methylaminoethanol (MAE)–water system. The role of TGBE in restructuring hydrogen-bond networks and promoting rich-phase aggregation was analyzed using gas–liquid–liquid equilibrium, 13 C NMR, gas chromatography, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Experimental results demonstrate that TGBE significantly reduces rich-phase volume while achieving CO 2 equilibrium loadings of 3.59 mol/kg for water-containing systems and 4.73 mol/kg for water-free systems. MD simulations reveal that CO 2 absorption redistributes intermolecular interactions, where strengthened hydrogen bonds between water and ionic species drive polar rich-phase aggregation. Furthermore, an empirical model, a GBDT-based predictive model, and a modified Deshmukh–Mather framework were developed to describe phase behavior with AARDs of 2.81%, 4.58%, and 6.61%, respectively. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for designing energy-efficient CO 2 capture systems.

Effect of extraction technique on chemical compositions and antioxidant activities of freeze-dried green pepper

Zhang Chaohua,Gu Fenglin,Hu Weicheng,Wu Guiping,Chen Weijun,Dong Conghui,Niu Zhiqiang

In this study, the yield, content of piperine, and antioxidant activity of pepper oleoresin obtained with the methods of maceration, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), and ultrasound-MAE (UMAE) were analyzed, and the microstructure of pepper residue was observed. For the yield and piperine content, the UMAE method had the best extraction capacity among the four methods. While, the oleoresin obtained with maceration had the highest total phenolic content, and the antioxidant activity of the oleoresin obtained by maceration was higher than that of the extracts acquired by UAE, MAE, and UMAE, and a high positive correlation was observed between the antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of the oleoresin obtained by these extraction methods. The ideal parameters for UMAE were an 80-mesh particle size and a 1 g/10 mL solid–liquid ratio. The kinetic parameters and models of the UMAE extraction process were also compared using first- and second-order models. The second-order kinetic equation with the lowest root mean square deviation and highest adjusted correlation coefficient proved to be more suitable for describing the extraction kinetics of pepper oleoresin. This study showed that UMAE is a fast, efficient, and cost-effective technique for the extraction of green pepper oleoresin.

Energy consumption analysis and parameter optimization of CO2 desorption in a structured packaged column

Kefei Li,Yue Wu,Yiming Bai,Hai Yan,Yiming Wang,Yuzhe Guan,Liang Li,Guicheng Liu

Reducing the energy consumption of CO 2 regeneration is crucial for enhancing the economic feasibility of CO 2 capture processes. While most studies have focused on developing novel absorbents, the influence of operating parameters on gas-liquid mass transfer behavior and their subsequent impact on energy consumption has received limited attention. This study experimentally investigates the regeneration heat duty (Q reg ) for CO 2 desorption from a 1-(Dimethylamino)-2-propanol (1DMA2P)/2-Methylaminoethanol (MAE) aqueous blend in a lab-scale stripper equipped with high-efficiency Sulzer DX structured packing. The effects of key operating parameters, including rich CO 2 loading, lean CO 2 loading, solution flow rate, amine concentration, and synergistic parameters (Δ α  ×  L and C  ×  L ), on Q reg were systematically analyzed. The experimental results showed that all these factors greatly influenced Q reg . For example, the Q reg decreases as the lean CO 2 loading (α lean ) , rich CO 2 loading (α rich ) , and 1DMA2P/MAE concentration (C) increase, indicating that the Q reg can be reduced by optimizing these operating parameters. Additionally, compared with MEA, 1DMA2P/MAE reduces energy consumption by 51.5 % and decreases the stripper height by 35 %. This study underscores the critical role of operating parameters in reducing CO 2 regeneration energy consumption. The findings provide valuable insights into optimizing stripper performance and demonstrate the advantages of the 1DMA2P/MAE blend as an energy-efficient alternative to MEA-based solvents in industrial CO 2 capture applications.

Volumetric and Viscometric Analysis of Aggregation Behavior in 2-(Methylamino)ethanol (MAE) + Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) Non-Aqueous Solutions

Jian Ma,Yixiao Wang,Jichao Hu,Gaoqi Han,Lemeng Wang,Huiying Gao,Pan Zhang,Kangrui Li,Dong Fu

This study determined and correlated the density and viscosity of the 2-(methylamino)ethanol (MAE) - dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) non-aqueous solution over a temperature range of 298.15 to 323.15 K at atmospheric pressure. The effects of the mass fraction of MAE ( w 1 ), temperature ( T ) and CO 2 loading ( α ) on viscosity and density were demonstrated based on of experimental data and calculations. The excess molar volume ( V m E ) and viscosity deviation ( Δη ) were derived from the experimental data. Furthermore, the V m E and Δη were correlated by using the Redlich-Kister equation. The viscosity activation energy and CO 2 diffusion coefficient were calculated and analyzed by utilizing viscosity data. The activation parameters activation enthalpy (Δ Η* ) and activation entropy (Δ S* ) were determined using the measured viscosity and density data. This combined study provides insights into intermolecular interactions and transportation characteristics through the observed changes in viscosity and density with composition.

Laboratory to bench-scale performance evaluation of water-lean MAE-DGM biphasic solvent for CO2 capture from low-concentration sources

Shuai Wang,Guangyi Cui,Yue Gu,Zhixuan Ma,Jing Wang,Shufeng Shen

Water-lean liquid–liquid biphasic absorbents have recently received increasing attention due to the potential advantages for capturing low CO 2 concentration flue gas with high efficiency in capture rate and energetic aspects. However, performance assessment has rarely been performed in a lab-scale continuous and integrated capture plant. In this work, a water-lean biphasic system containing 2-(methylamino) ethanol (M), diglyme (D) and water (H) was proposed for about 5 vol% CO 2 exhaust gas treatment based on the batch absorption–desorption capture tests. Integrated phase changing capture process using the developed absorbent formulation 40 M−50D−10H (WLS-10C) was demonstrated in a lab-scale CO 2 capture plant over 200 hrs testing. Energetic and capture performance as well as operational stability were evaluated and compared with aqueous 30 mass % MEA under the same targeted capture rate (about 90 %). The stable phase change behavior after CO 2 absorption was observed in the phase separator, and the CO 2 rich phase can be effectively regenerated at 393 K, forming a monophasic solution in the feed tank with the CO 2 lean phase from the separator for solvent reuse. This biphasic WLS-10C can reduce the energy consumption by about 45–55 % compared with aqueous MEA at about 90 % capture rate, demonstrating a pronounced energy-saving effect. Moreover, volumetric mass transfer coefficient and viscosity were also discussed. These findings provide valuable insights into the further pilot demonstration of the proposed biphasic absorbent.

Determination of methylmercury in rice using microwave-assisted extraction coupled with thermal decomposition amalgamation atomic absorption spectrometry (MAE-TDA-AAS)

Qing Luo,Xu Gao,Yuanan Hu,Kunde Lin,Xuejun Wang,Hefa Cheng

This work developed a method for rapid determination of methylmercury (MeHg) in rice, a staple cereal widely consumed in Asia, based on microwave-assisted extraction coupled with thermal decomposition amalgamation atomic absorption spectrometry (MAE-TDA-AAS). Orthogonal design was applied to optimize the parameters of MAE, and the optimal conditions were found to be as follows: 1.5 g of rice powder extracted using 12 mL toluene and 6 mL 30% HCl solution at 110 °C for 5 min under microwave irradiation. MeHg extracted into the organic phase (4.0 mL) was then back-extracted into 2.0 mL 1.5% L-cysteine solution, followed by quantitation by TDA-AAS on a direct mercury analyzer. The MeHg recovery rate of this method determined from a spiked rice sample was 80.8% (77.5–84.1%, 95% confidence limits), while those for MeHg in certified reference materials, TORT-2 and SRM-2976, were 97.6% (91.0–104.1%, 95% confidence limits) and 93.8% (90.4–97.2%, 95% confidence limits), respectively. The limit of detection and limit of quantification for MeHg in rice were 0.13 and 0.43 ng g−1, respectively, and the relative standard deviation was below 5%. The extracts of 15 rice samples collected from two provinces in China were analyzed by both TDA-AAS and the well-developed high performance liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) method, and comparable results were obtained. Overall, these findings demonstrate that the MAE-TDA-AAS method developed in this study is a convenient and reliable method for quick determination of MeHg in rice and probably other food grains, and it is an order of magnitude more sensitive than the previous methods established for analysis of mercury species in fish and seafood.

Physical/Chemical Solubility and Chemical Equilibrium Analysis of Carbon Dioxide Absorption in a Potential and Novel Blended Amine Solution of 2-Methylaminoethanol (MAE) and N,N-Diethylethanolamine (DEEA)

Tianzi Liu,Jialuo Xiang,Ding Wei,Yangqiang Huang,Hao Chen,Xiao Luo

This study comprehensively reports the physical and chemical equilibrium solubility data, along with a detailed chemical equilibrium analysis, of carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption into a blended amine solution consisting of 2-methylaminoethanol (MAE) and N,N-diethylethanolamine (DEEA). Four models were employed to analyze the CO2 physical solubility using N2O analogy, with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model exhibiting an average absolute relative deviation (AARD) of 2.78%. The CO2 chemical solubilities were then analyzed experimentally at various temperatures (298–313 K), CO2 partial pressures (8–100 kPa), and concentrations (1–5 mol/L). In addition, the heat of CO2 absorption was estimated to be 46.96 kJ/mol using the Gibbs–Helmholtz equation, which is approximately half that of the benchmark amine, monoethanolamine (MEA). A rigorous 13C NMR investigation was conducted to identify and quantify the species formed during the absorption process across varying temperatures, CO2 loadings, and MAE/DEEA molar ratios, to clarify the capture mechanisms and intricate role of MAE and DEEA in the capture process. As a result, at an MAE/DEEA ratio of 1:4, the carbamate concentration peaks at a CO2 load of about 0.45 mol of CO2 /mol of amine at about 0.6 mol/L, which is only one-third of the concentration at the higher ratio, which contributes to the reduction of energy consumption for CO2 desorption.

Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) combined with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) for determination of volatile small molecules to evaluate compatibility of antimicrobial peptide PL-5 spray with packaging materials

Chu Liu,Xiangyong Yu,Zhaorui Meng,Ning Zhao,Fujuan Bai,Longshan Zhao

A simple and efficient method involving microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) combined with GC–MS was established to determine 1,3-di- tert -butylbenzene (DBB), 2,4-di- tert -butylphenol (DBP), 3,5-di- tert -butyl-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (DBHBA) for evaluating the compatibility of antimicrobial peptide PL-5 spray with drug-packaging materials. In this study, the antimicrobial peptide PL-5 spray was purified using a Welchrom C18 column, and the high-density polyethylene spray bottle with liquid collection tube was first mixed with absolute ethanol, which would be subjected to MAE for further measurement by GC–MS. Various experimental parameters were systematically optimized, and good linearities were obtained within the range of 0.05–1.00 μg/mL for DBB and DBHBA and 0.50–10.00 μg/mL for DBP, with limits of detection (LODs) of 0.99 ng/mL (DBB), 16.34 ng/mL (DBP), and 1.64 ng/mL (DBHBA). Satisfactory recoveries that ranged from 96.0% to 107.2% were acquired, and the relative standard deviation was ≤ 4.7%. The results showed that the maximum daily usage of DBB, DBP, and DBHBA was 9.859, 163.445, and 16.399 ng, respectively, which was far below the corresponding permitted daily exposure values according to the safety assessment, indicating that the migration of analytes did not bring any potential safety risk. The compatibility between the drug and the packaging materials was favorable.

Experimental studies on mass transfer performance for CO2 absorption into aqueous N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) based solutions in a PTFE hollow fiber membrane contactor

Fan Cao,Hongxia Gao,Qian Xiong,Zhiwu Liang

CO 2 absorption performance for various blended N ,N- dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) solutions in the presence of absorption promoters including Monoethanolamine (MEA), Piperazine (PZ), 2-(Ethylamino)ethanol (EAE), 2-(Methylamino)ethanol (MAE) and 2-Amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) was investigated in terms of CO 2 absorption flux by using a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow fiber membrane contactor. The experimental results show that the CO 2 absorption flux increases with a reasonable increase in liquid velocity, liquid temperature and total amine concentration. Also, the CO 2 absorption flux can increase by increasing gas velocity, CO 2 partial pressure but decrease with the increased lean CO 2 loading. In addition, it can be found that all of the investigated activated amines can improve the CO 2 absorption flux of aqueous DMEA solution. For fresh amine solution, the order of CO 2 absorption flux for the investigated amine blends can be ranked as: DMEA < DMEA + AMP < DMEA + MEA < DMEA + EAE < DMEA + MAE < DMEA + PZ. By contrast, for the amine solution with CO 2 loading of over 0.3 mol/mol, the order has also changed accordingly and can be ranked as: DMEA < DMEA + AMP < DMEA + EAE < DMEA + MAE < DMEA + MEA < DMEA + PZ. The DMEA + PZ mixture presents a significant improvement up to 52.44% in CO 2 absorption flux compared to that of single DMEA solution, and can be considered as a promising alternative for CO 2 capture.

Effects of Different Extraction Methods on Biological Activities of Pearl Powder Extracts

Wang Wenchao,An Lianhao,Lei Junrong,Li Dan,Shen Zheluan,Wang Hong,Li Qingyong

Pearl powder has been used in medicine and beauty treatment since ancient times in China. However, it is still unclear whether the biological activities of pearl powder are affected by different extraction methods or not. In this study, we determine the total protein yield, protein molecular weight and biological activities including antioxidant, tyrosinase inhibition and melanogenesis inhibition activities and cytotoxicity of different pearl powder extracts prepared by five different preparation methods. The ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) of pearl powder were optimized by the response surface method based on total protein yield. Compared with solid-liquid extraction (SLE), the optimized UAE and MAE increased the total protein yield without changing protein molecular weight. In addition, the extract by MAE enhanced the tyrosinase inhibition activity and anti-melanogenesis activity slightly. Acidolysis hydrolyzes macromolecular protein into small molecules with obvious cytotoxicity and low activities. Enzymolysis can hydrolyze macromolecular protein into small molecules with high protein yield and improvement of bioactivities. In the determination of the antioxidant assay, the extract prepared by the enzymolysis showed significant activity. These results suggest that protein molecules of the pearl powder extract are degraded appropriately by enzymolysis to smaller molecules to obtain the enhanced biological activities that can be applied in the cosmetic industry.
