Fast Electrodeposition of MXene/PDA Composites for High-Performance Bioelectronic Interfaces: An In Vitro Evaluation

Qi Zeng,Chenyang Xing,Zhen Xu,Qing Liu,Liangtao Yang,Hui Yang,Yi Zhang,Zhengchun Peng

Bioelectrode is critical to many biomedical researches. However, traditional materials (typically noble metals) and manufacturing techniques limit the large-scale production of bioelectrodes. Herein, a fast electrochemical approach is proposed to deposit versatile MXene/polydopamine (PDA) composites on a metalized substrate. PDA coating can improve the adhesion between MXene and the substrate, while MXene provides rough surfaces with unique micro/nanostructure and outstanding electrical/optical/thermal performance. The impedance of the as-prepared bioelectrode at 1 kHz is down to 8.48 Ω cm 2 . The corresponding cathodic charge storage capacity (CSC c ) and charge injection capacity (CIC) are up to ≈250 and 6.59 mC cm −2 respectively, much superior to that of bare Pt and other conventional material-based electrodes. The MXene/PDA composites also demonstrate robust stability under continuous electrostimulation for 1 × 10 8 pulse cycles and 1000 CV cycles. Moreover, MXene/PDA composites show a high and rapid photothermal response. Photoelectrochemical activity is also observed with high photocurrent, ≈40 folds larger than that of bare Pt. The utility of this new electrode in ascorbic acid sensing is demonstrated. Excellent biocompatibility is verified via neuron adhesion test and viability assay.

Shili Hou,Mingzhen Wen,Jiaxin Wei,Lifen Li,Guangyan Liu

In this study, novel honeycomb-like morphology MXene@PDA/MOF composites were prepared in situ on the surface of MXene@PDA (polydopamine), combined with 2-methylimidazole and Zn 2+ . The characterizations of morphology and electrochemical properties show that MXene@PDA/MOF has large specific surface areas and outstanding electroconductibility. Furthermore, the MXene@PDA/MOF-based sensor was fabricated to detect l-cysteine (L-Cys). The response of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) shows the current intensity increases as l-Cys concentration. Under the optimum conditions, DPV response shows a fine linear relationship with l-Cys concentration in a range of 0.01 – 5.0 μmol L −1 with the detection limit of 3.74 × 10 −9 mol L −1 . This sensor was used to detect l-Cys in real samples with recoveries of 100.34 % – 101.68 %. Thus, the MXene@PDA/MOF-based electrochemical sensor exhibits excellent selectivity, reproducibility, stability, and practicability.

Biomimetic construction of hierarchical MXene@PDA@CoFeOx nanohybrids towards efficient fire-safe epoxy nanocomposites with enhanced thermal conductivity and mechanical properties

Richeng Lian,Yunpeng Jiang,Haocun Guan,Jiahui Cui,Qingyao Gao,Lei Liu,Xilei Chen,Chuanmei Jiao

Developing high-performance MXene-based polymer nanocomposites through a biomimetic method has been a research hotspot. However, it is still an intractable challenge to achieve MXene-based polymer nanocomposites with efficient fire safety, excellent thermal conductivity, and enhanced mechanical properties. Here, inspired by the adhesion of mussels, the hierarchical MXene@PDA@CoFeOx nanohybrid was fabricated by a self-assembly strategy and then employed to prepare epoxy resin (EP) nanocomposites. It has been found that MXene@PDA@CoFeOx can display excellent dispersion and interfacial compatibility in EP matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that only 2.0 wt% MXene@PDA@CoFeOx results in excellent thermal stability and char yield (31.29 wt%) of EP under a nitrogen atmosphere. Combustion tests show that the 2.0 wt% MXene@PDA@CoFeOx confers efficient fire safety to EP. Remarkably, the EP-2.0%MXene@PDA@CoFeOx can obtain an attractive UL-94 rating of V0. Meanwhile, the peak heat release rate (pHRR), smoke factor (SF), and peak CO production rate (pCO) of EP-2.0%MXene@PDA@CoFeOx are dramatically decreased by 33.38%, 55.41%, and 36.84% in comparison to those of virgin EP, respectively. The efficient fire safety of EP nanocomposites is mainly attributed to the barrier effect, dilution effect, and catalytic carbonization effect of hierarchical MXene@PDA@CoFeOx. Furthermore, the MXene@PDA@CoFeOx enables EP to boast enhanced thermal conductivity (improved by 69.14%), impact strength (improved by 13.38%), and flexural strength (improved by 17.60%). This work offers a feasible biomimetic method for fabricating hierarchical MXene@PDA@CoFeOx nanohybrids and preparing efficient fire-safe EP nanocomposites with excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical performance.

All-in-one MXene/PDA@MF-EF solar steam generator with semi-clad construction for efficient interfacial evaporation, water purification and desalination

Xiaotong Mu,Wenbo Han,Hongpeng Zhang,Rui Li,Chenzhao Bai,Wei Li,Yucai Xie,Yu Liu

Interfacial solar-driven water evaporation technology is considered a cost-effective strategy to mitigate the shortage of freshwater resources at present. However, the coordinated regulation of thermal and water management remains a significant challenge in the design of evaporation systems. From the practical application viewpoint, it is essential to develop an economical, expandable, and simple preparation process for high photothermal conversion capacity and super hydrophilic evaporators. Here, a novel all-in-one MXene/PDA@MF-EF solar evaporator with a porous semi-cladding structure was designed by embedding EPE foam as a base layer (named MF-EF) inside a melamine foam (MF) and coating MXene/PDA as a light-absorbent layer on the surface of MF-EF (named MXene/PDA@MF-EF). The designed MXene/PDA@MF-EF vaporizer has excellent photothermal conversion capability and water transport channel. The MXene/PDA@MF-EF evaporator exhibits an evaporation rate reaching 1.5576 kg m −2  h −1 and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 92.63 % under 1 kW m −2 irradiation. Meanwhile, it exhibits good long-term stability and salt resistance when continuously treating seawater and different concentrations of NaCl solutions. For practical application, an outdoor evaporation device was designed, and the maximum freshwater production of up to 7.170 kg m −2 was achieved under 9 h of sunlight. Hence, the MXene/PDA@MF-EF evaporator enables clean water production through the coordinated action of thermal and water management, providing a viable and stable alternative to solar water evaporation in a variety of aqueous environments. Further, it provides a solution for realizing solar-driven interfacial evaporation desalination technology for freshwater access in coastal and offshore islands.

Cryptotanshinone-Doped Photothermal Synergistic MXene@PDA Nanosheets with Antibacterial and Anti-Inflammatory Properties for Wound Healing

Zongjia Li,Wei Wei,Miaomiao Zhang,Xinyue Guo,Bailin Zhang,Dapeng Wang,Xiue Jiang,Fangxin Liu,Jilin Tang

Humans are threatened by bacteria and other microorganisms, resulting in countless pathogen-related infections and illnesses. Accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in infected wounds activates strong inflammatory responses. The overuse of antibiotics has led to increasing bacterial resistance. Therefore, effective ROS scavenging and bactericidal capacity are essential and the advanced development of collaborative therapeutic techniques to combat bacterial infections is needed. Here, this work developes an MXene@polydopamine-cryptotanshinone (MXene@PDA-CPT) antibacterial nanosystem with excellent reactive oxygen and nitrogen species scavenging ability, which effectively inactivates drug-resistant bacteria and biofilms, thereby promoting wound healing. In this system, the adhesion of polydopamine nanoparticles to MXene produced a photothermal synergistic effect and free radical scavenging activity, presenting a promising antibacterial and anti-inflammatory strategy. This nanosystem causes fatal damage to bacterial membranes. The loading of cryptotanshinone further expanded the advantages of the system, causing a stronger bacterial killing effect and inflammation mitigatory effect with desired biosafety and biocompatibility. In addition, combining nanomaterials and active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine, this work provides a new rationale for the future development of wound dressings, which contributes to eliminating bacterial resistance, delaying disease deterioration, and alleviating the pain of patients.

Synchronously enhanced breakdown strength and energy storage performance of cellulose acetate sandwich-structured composite films utilizing MXene@PDA nanosheets

Fan Zhang,Yi-liang Zou,Rui Lou,Jing-hui Yang,De-xiang Sun,Nan Zhang,Yong Wang

Environment-friendly dielectric materials with high energy density and charge–discharge efficiency are urgently required in dielectric capacitors. Here, we prepared the cellulose acetate (CA)-based sandwich-structured composite films by solution casting technique. To reduce the conductivity of MXene and upgrade the compatibility between filler and matrix, MXene was modified by polydopamine (PDA) to obtain MXene@PDA (M@P) hybrid filler, and then it was added into CA matrix to manufacture CA/M@P as the middle layer to significantly improve dielectric constant, while poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with excellent insulation property was designed as the outer layers. The results indicate that the strong hydrogen bonding interaction between layers is conducive to the dense internal structure of the composite films, and a prominently strengthened discharged energy density (12.53 J/cm 3 ) and efficiency (72.12%) at 625 MV/m are reached in composite film containing 1 wt% M@P, with ultrahigh stability during the 10 6 consecutive charge-discharge measurements. Furthermore, the composite films also exhibit good mechanical properties. This work suggests the practicability of CA in substituting petroleum-based polymers in the dielectric capacitors.

Yan Huang,Sixian Chen,Yi Li,Qianbing Lin,Yibo Wu,Qisong Shi

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber-based flexible piezoelectric sensors are recognized for their applicability in wearable electronic devices, personal health monitoring, and motion detection. This research explores the impact of dual fillers, MXene and polydopamine-modified zinc oxide (PDA@ZnO), on the characteristics of PAN-based piezoelectric composite nanofiber films, including planar zigzag conformation content, dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and mechanical properties. By integrating PDA@ZnO as a filler, PAN/MXene/PDA@ZnO-5 (PMPO) piezoelectric sensors were developed, showcasing enhanced piezoelectric sensing capabilities. These sensors achieved a sensitivity of 28.56 V/N across a broad linear range, with superior mechanical stability and durability across 3000 loading–unloading cycles, and exhibited swift response and recovery times of 49 ms and 40 ms, respectively. Furthermore, their unique fiber structure and flexibility, when interfaced with the human body, enable the detection of minute physiological movements and the conversion of varied motions into distinct voltage outputs. Thus, these sensors offer considerable promise for applications in human health monitoring and motion posture correction.

Photoelectroactive Composites Based on PPy-MXene/PDA for Multifunctional Bioelectronic Interfacing

Qi Zeng,Ri Wang,Zihao Li,Ju Lin,Liang Guo,Yi Zhang,Zhengchun Peng

The emerging two-dimensional material, MXene, has attracted widespread interest in bioelectronic interfaces due to its outstanding optical, electrical, and chemical properties. However, current in situ fabrication strategies have not fully achieved robust MXene-based bioelectrodes, significantly limiting their functionalities and applications. Here, we present an electropolymerization and codeposition approach to combine the negatively charged MXene nanosheets, positively charged pyrrole (Py) radical cations, and polydopamine (PDA) adhesion elements. The as-prepared PPy-MXene/PDA composites as an bioelectrode exhibits a dramatically reduced interfacial impedance of ∼99% in the low-frequency region, a cathodic charge storage capacity (CSCc) up to 195 mC cm–2, and record-high charge injection capacity (CIC) of 15 mC cm–2. No significant delamination or electrochemical loss is observed even after being subject to continuous electrostimulation, long-term immersion, and high-frequency mechanical stimulation in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), showing robust chronic stability. Moreover, the bioelectrode demonstrates a high, rapid, and stable photoelectrochemical response under near-infrared laser irradiation. The PPy-MXene/PDA-based photoelectroactive composites also exhibit excellent sensitivity to ascorbic acid, with a detection limit an order of magnitude lower than that of pure MXene. The mechanism underlying the enhanced performance of the PPy-MXene/PDA bioelectrode is systematically studied. This PPy-MXene/PDA-based photoelectroactive composites can be extended to numerous other applications.

Glutaraldehyde-assisted crosslinking for the preparation of low dielectric loss and high energy density cellulose composites filled with poly(dopamine) modified MXene

Fan Zhang,Meng-hang Gao,Chao-qun Wu,Jing-hui Yang,Nan Zhang,Yong Wang

In today’s electric power systems, biodegradable and environmentally benign dielectric materials with outstanding dielectric capabilities are essential. Here, a hybrid filler MXene@PDA (M@P) was acquired by coating MXene with polydopamine (PDA), and then it was added into cellulose matrix to manufacture regenerated cellulose/M@P (RC/M@P) composite films. Finally, a crosslinking strategy with glutaraldehyde (GA) assistance was developed to further modify the RC/M@P composite films. The crosslinked composite films (CRC/M@P) had a denser structure with fewer defects, considerably decreased dielectric loss, and significantly strengthened breakdown strength. The highest energy storage density of 3.37 J/cm 3 was obtained for CRC/M@P-1 composite film with only 1 wt% M@P at 361.07 MV/m, achieving significant enhancement compared with the original CRC film. Moreover, crosslinking also contributed to the CRC/M@P for achieving better mechanical properties. The excellent comprehensive performances endow CRC/M@P composite films with promising application for the next-generation dielectric capacitors.

Mussel-inspired preparation of MXene-PDA-Bi6O7 composites for efficient adsorptive removal of iodide ions

Xuefeng Sha,Huizhen Huang,Shiyan Sun,Hongye Huang,Qiang Huang,Ziyang He,Meiying Liu,Naigen Zhou,Xiaoyong Zhang,Yen Wei

MXene has emerged as one of the most interesting two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials , that has been widely explored for various applications, including environmental adsorption. However, the adsorption performance of unmodified MXene is poor and surface functionalization is necessary to endow new properties and improve the adsorption performance. In this work, we reported the fabrication of MXene based bismuth oxide (MXene-PDA-Bi 6 O 7 ) composites for the first time through the mussel-inspired chemistry, which relied on the self-polymerization of dopamine to form polydopamine (PDA) films on MXene for subsequent immobilization of Bi 6 O 7 nanoparticles . The utilization of MXene-PDA-Bi 6 O 7 composites for adsorptive removal of iodide ions and the adsorption parameters on adsorption behavior were examined in details. The surface morphology, chemical structure and chemical compositions of these samples were characterized by a series of techniques. The results demonstrated that the maximum adsorption capacity of MXene-PDA-Bi 6 O 7 towards iodide ions is 64.65 mg/g, which is obviously greater than that of unmodified MXene and MXene-PDA under identical adsorption conditions. In the fabrication strategy, the PDA could be facilely coated on the MXene and provide a platform for further immobilization of the Bi 6 O 7 nanoparticles. This method is simple, easy of operation and can be occurred under benign and mild experimental conditions. Moreover, this method could also be utilized for introduction of other functional components on the MXene and thus multifunctional MXene based composites with designed properties and functions could be fabricated. We believe that this work will open a new avenue for fabrication of functional MXene based composites for environmental treatment.

Ultrafast and ultrasensitive electrospun PAN/MXene/PDA@BaTiO₃ piezoelectric membranes for real-time sports impact monitoring

Siyu Chen,Congcong Hao,Mingzhe Cai,Shuaining Cheng,Zhongxin Wang,Ao Wang,Teng Wang,Junbiao Chen,Chenyang Xue

Using PAN as the substrate, a uniform and dense nanofiber membrane was prepared via electrospinning. It features structural stability, lightweight flexibility, and compatibility with sensor integration without compromising racquet performance. • The component design aligns with the principles of functional membrane modification. Doping MXene and PDA@BaTiO₃ into the PAN substrate achieves synergistic enhancement, with 130 mg identified as the optimal doping concentration, providing a basis for membrane performance optimization. • The membrane exhibits outstanding performance: sensors based on the PAN substrate membrane demonstrate a sensitivity of 13.74 V/N and a response time of 1.2 ms. At 10 Hz and 1.5 N, the output voltage reaches 78.42 V, enabling real-time sensing and aligning with the multifunctional application focus in membrane science. • The PAN-based piezoelectric membrane showed no damage or performance degradation after 5000 cycles, meeting long-term usage requirements and highlighting the reliability of functional membrane applications. Accurate capture of table tennis stroke data provides crucial support for personalized training and skill enhancement. However, existing visual monitoring systems struggle to simultaneously detect stroke force and impact location due to interference from ambient lighting and shooting angles, creating a core bottleneck in intelligent table tennis training. To this end, this study innovatively proposes an integrated flexible piezoelectric sensor solution. Utilizing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the substrate, a PAN/MXene/PDA@BaTiO₃ piezoelectric composite film was prepared via electrospinning technology. An integrated design was adopted, where an 8-channel piezoelectric sensor array was constructed on the front side of the racket, and a signal acquisition and wireless transmission module were integrated on the back side, enabling real-time and accurate capture and transmission of hitting signals. Experimental results indicate that the composite membrane exhibits optimal piezoelectric performance at a PDA@BaTiO₃ doping concentration of 130 mg, achieving a sensitivity of 13.74 V/N with a response time of only 1.2 ms. It maintains excellent mechanical stability even after 5000 cycles of load testing. The integrated racket demonstrated outstanding dynamic sensing capabilities in both ball-bouncing and rally tests. This research not only provides a novel technical approach for table tennis training but also lays a technological foundation for flexible sensing technology in the field of smart sports. In recent years, smart textiles and flexible wearable products have garnered significant attention in fields such as human-computer interaction, medical rehabilitation training, and motion monitoring. Flexible pressure sensors have attracted significant attention due to their excellent flexibility, stability, and multifunctional integration. Herein, a multifunctional wearable MXene/polydopamine (PDA)@cotton fabric pressure sensor was developed by modifying weft-knitted cotton fabric based on a dual hydrogen bond self-assembly strategy. The MXene/PDA@cotton fabric pressure sensor demonstrates wide linear detection range (0–146 kPa), high sensitivity (0.95 kPa–1), fast response/recovery times (16.434 and 11.952 ms), and outstanding stability after over 5000 cyclic tests. This sensor can achieve the monitoring of physiological parameters for human state detection, such as facial expression signals, abdominal respiratory signals, and joint bending signals. Furthermore, by integrating the MXene/PDA sensors into the interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joints of a cotton glove, combined with intelligent algorithms and the human-computer interaction system, static gesture recognition and dynamic sign language translation were successfully realized based on the smart glove. This work demonstrates the potential application of flexible pressure sensors in intelligent human-computer interaction, providing new insights for developing next-generation sign language recognition systems.
