Herein, we present an ultrafast microwave approach for fabricating MoS2/MoO2@CNT nanocomposites toward supercapacitor electrodes with excellent cycle stability. The surface chemistry, crystalline structure and morphology of the as-produced nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR, XRD, XPS, EDS and SEM. It was found that MoS2/MoO2 nanoparticles could grow uniformly on the surface of CNTs, and the CNTs can provide a transport path for ions in electrolytes and reduce energy loss, thus leading to enhanced electrochemical performance of the resultant nanocomposites. Electrochemical results showed that the capacitance of the nanocomposite electrode was increased by 187.1% after 25 000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g−1, indicating outstanding cycling stability. Also, the maximum capacitance of the optimized MoS2/MoO2@CNT electrode can reach 228.4 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor (MoS2/MoO2@CNT//AC) was assembled which exhibited a maximum energy density of 11.88 W h kg−1 and a power density of 2 kW kg−1, respectively. Intriguingly, the asymmetric supercapacitors could successfully light three LED lights for 5 minutes, showing their great practical application potential in portable supercapacitors.

Exploring low-cost and highly efficient electrocatalysts with bifunctional activities of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is practically essential for overall water splitting. Nevertheless, perfectly balancing the catalytic behavior between HER and OER continues to be a great challenge due to their distinct conducting behaviors and free energies. Herein, an advanced bifunctional electrocatalyst based on P-doped defective MoS 2 /MoO 2 heterostructure integrated onto highly conductive carbon cloth has been constructed for overall water splitting in acidic media. By reasonably controlling reaction conditions, the MoS 2 /MoO 2 heterostructure can be rationally constructed and the corresponding sulfur vacancies can be well optimized. Meanwhile, the abundant oxygen vacancies can be also created during the heat transformation processes. Benefiting from the unique structural features that favor the active species adsorption and electron transfer, the resultant A-P-M-3/CC catalyst exhibits exceptional bifunctional electrocatalytic activity, with low overpotentials of 67 and 104 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for HER and OER, respectively. When coupled in a two-electrode electrolyzer, A-P-M-3/CC delivers 10 mA cm −2 at a low cell voltage of 1.44 V with good stability, surpassing most of similar electrocatalysts. This work offers a novel avenue for water splitting catalyst optimization.

Dopamine (DA) is a key neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, and abnormal concentrations are associated with a variety of diseases. In this study, a novel electrochemical sensor is constructed based on ultrathin P-doped MoS2/MoO2 nanosheets supported on bowl-shaped N-doped carbon hemispheres (N-BCH@P-MoS2/MoO2). The unique hierarchical structure combines the high specific surface area of N-BCH with the enhanced electrocatalytic activity of P-doped MoS2/MoO2, resulting in significant improvements in the performance for DA detection. The electronic structure of the catalyst is further modulated by the codoping of N and P, which increases the electrical conductivity and the number of active centers. The results show that the N-BCH@P-MoS2/MoO2 exhibits excellent sensitivity and selectivity for DA detection, capable of achieving a detection limit as low as 0.12 μM within a broad concentration range (3–100 μM) (S/N = 3). Furthermore, electrocatalysts have been employed in the detection of DA in human serum, indicating significant promise for clinical diagnosis.

Transition metal dichalcogenide based 2D/2D or 2D/3D van der Waals heterostructures exhibit superior properties for high-performance electronics, tunneling transistors, and catalysts. Here, we report on the fabrication of high quality 2D/3D MoS 2 /MoO 2 heterostructures with an atomic clean interface by one-step chemical vapor deposition. Optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy measurements reveal the high-quality of as-grown samples and the specific epitaxial relationship between MoS 2 and MoO 2 : MoS 2 [ 1 ¯ 1 ¯ 20]//MoO 2 [001] and MoS 2 [ 1 ¯ 100]//MoO 2 [201]. Photoluminescence and Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements combined with density functional theory calculations confirm the interfacial charge transfer from MoS 2 to the underlying MoO 2 . Furthermore, MoO 2 induced in-plane anisotropy in MoS 2 was revealed using angle-resolved polarized Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy with anisotropic ratios of 1.27 (Raman) and 1.29 (photoluminescence), respectively, which is most possibly attributed to anisotropic interfacial charge interactions. Our findings provide an excellent platform for the investigation on interfacial effects. Moreover, the in-plane anisotropy in MoS 2 induced by MoO 2 has expanded the application of isotropic MoS 2 in the polarization-dependent fields.

Electrically driven red emission from MoS2–MoO2–MoO3 (MS-MO) hybrid-based metal–semiconductor–metal (MSM) devices is reported for the first time. MoO3 belts with high crystal quality and sufficient size are synthesized by thermal deposition. A layer of MS-MO hybrid is then produced on the belt surface to form MoO3/MS-MO core–shell by sulfurization. The devices exhibit unique electrical properties, a nonlinear I–V curve, and electric hysteresis characteristics at high applied biases (>2.4 V), where MS-MO hybrids act as electron transport channels. The electroluminescent current of the device increases to a set current limit over time when a constant bias is applied. The novel characteristics of the device are attributed to the space charge limited conduction (SCLC) mechanism occurring in MS-MO hybrids. The strong light emission is from recombination of excitons within the MoS2 phase. This work develops a simple and effective method to drive MoS2 to emit light on a large scale without using monolayer MoS2 and vertical p–n junctions, indicating great potential for future 2D optoelectronics and photonics applications.

Monolayer MoS 2 is an emerging two-dimensional semiconductor with wide-ranging potential applications in novel optoelectronic devices and catalysis. Here, we report the growth of drop-like monolayer MoS 2 /MoO 2 granular films on SiO 2 /Si substrate by chemical vapor deposition method. The as-synthesized films were systematically characterized by various means of optical microscopy, X-ray/ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic/kelvin force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman and photoluminescence techniques. The combined results of atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy clearly present novel drop-like granulars and domain boundaries, ascribed to lower growth temperature. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy results complemented by Raman and X-ray diffraction results confirm the formation of MoS 2 /MoO 2 granular films. The ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, along with kelvin force microscopy, reveals a different nature of surface potential of drop-like MoS 2 granular films compared with crystalline MoS 2 , owing to electron transfer from MoS 2 to MoO 2 and drop-like structure. Our study broadens the scope of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides research and reveals the distinct physical properties of drop-like monolayer MoS 2 granular films.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), with its unique two-dimensional nanostructure and high theoretical capacity, is considered a promising electrode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the disadvantages of MoS2 electrodes include low electronic conductivity, sluggish cation kinetics, serious volume change, poor cycle stability, and inefficient rate performance of lithium storage. Herein, oxygen vacancy and heterostructure engineering are rationally involved in revealing the moderate oxygen vacancy in the hierarchical tubular heterostructure material (MoS2@MoO2) via a self-template method as a highly active LIB electrode. Due to the presence of the moderate oxygen vacancies and heterojunction structure of MoS2@MoO2-4, the diffusion pathway and barrier for lithium ions can be significantly reduced, accelerating the ionic diffusion rate and further promoting the reaction kinetics. The electrode achieves a high reversible capacity of 1200.1 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1 after 100 cycles with the optimum regulation of the sulfur contents and the moderate oxygen vacancy (MoS2@MoO2-4). Additionally, good rate capability is obtained at stepwise current densities due to the merits of MoS2@MoO2. A series of measurements such as EPR, XPS, in situ XRD, and in situ Raman are also employed to reveal the synergistic effect in the midst of oxygen vacancies and heterostructures for lithium storage. All results prove that the moderate oxygen vacancy and tubular heterostructure can implement faster Li+ transport and lower the diffusion barrier of lithium ions, resulting in enhanced lithium storage performance of MoS2@MoO2.

Hybrid Mg 2+ /Li + batteries (MLIBs) are a promising battery system that combines the advantages of fast lithium-ion kinetics and dendrite-free magnesium deposition. Layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has gained increasing interest due to larger layer spacing and weak van der Waals forces in MLIBs. However, poor intrinsic electronic conductivity hinders its practical application. Here, a highly conductive MoS 2 /MoO 2 /reduced graphene oxide (MoS 2 /MoO 2 /rGO) composite synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method is employed as a high-performance cathode material for MLIBs. The high electrical conductivity (7.5 ×10 −3 S cm −1 ) and large specific surface area of MoS 2 /MoO 2 /rGO facilitate the rapid transport of interfacial electrons and provide abundant active sites for Mg 2+ /Li + storage. The optimized MoS 2 /MoO 2 /rGO composite exhibits a high discharge capacity (297.3 mAh g −1 ) and excellent rate performance. Moreover, the composite electrode delivers ultra-long cycle life over 5000 cycles at 1000 mA g −1 , with a capacity degradation rate of only 0.007 % per cycle. The results offer valuable insights for the development of highly conductive MoS 2 -based composites.

The development of hierarchical heterostructured materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) remains hindered by suboptimal high-rate cycling performance, primarily due to phase interface pulverization and separation during charge–discharge processes. To address these challenges, we designed a carbon-free hierarchical structure comprising few-layered MoS₂ nanosheets and MoO₂ nanocrystals through precise compositional optimization and rational structural engineering. The heterogeneous components are interconnected through robust S─O covalent bonds, which theoretical calculations and experimental results confirm generate a built-in electric field at the heterointerfaces, significantly enhancing reaction kinetics. Crucially, these covalent bonds stabilize the heterointerfaces, improving structural integrity and mitigating electrode material agglomeration and pulverization. Additionally, the MoS₂/MoO₂ heterostructure enhances Na⁺ adsorption energetics and reduces Na⁺ diffusion barriers, facilitating efficient ion transport. Leveraging its abundant heterointerfaces and stable architecture, the composite delivers exceptional rate performance (432.7 mAh·g⁻¹ at 10 A·g⁻¹) and outstanding cycling stability (nearly 100% capacity retention over 400 cycles at 5 A·g⁻¹). This work provides a strategic framework for designing heterostructured materials with stable interface-rich architectures, advancing the development of high-performance conversion/alloy-type anodes for energy storage applications. Graphical The study designs a carbon-free MoS 2 /MoO 2 heterostructure with abundant heterointerfaces and strong chemical bonding. The formed S─O bonds generate an internal built-in electric field, endowing the heterostructure with metallic conductivity and high Na + adsorption energy. The rational structural design ensures fast reaction kinetics and a stable heterointerface, enabling superior high-rate Na + -ion storage performance.

The photoelectrocatalytic water splitting of molybdenum disulfide is hindered by the intrinsic large electrical resistance among adjacent layers, serious photo-generated carrier recombination and limited utilization of visible light . Herein, we construct MoS 2 /MoO 2 heterostructures via a facile in situ hydrothermal route, in which a Schottky junction is established between the MoS 2 semiconductor and metallic MoO 2 . As a result, the photoelectrochemical current density of MoS 2 /MoO 2 is enhanced about 1.6 times than that of pure MoS 2 , achieving −10.3 mA cm −2 at −1.8 V vs. SCE, which can be attributed to the reduced electron transfer resistance, enlarged photo-generated carrier separation efficiency and enhanced light absorption due to the presence of metallic MoO 2 .

As crucial biomarkers, the rapid and sensitive detection of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) is essential for disease prevention and diagnosis. In this study, MoS 2 /MoO 2 heteronanorod modified N-doped porous carbon nanofiber (N-PCNFs@MoS 2 /MoO 2 ) sensing electrodes for the simultaneous detection of DA and UA were fabricated by electrostatic spinning coupled with vulcanization reaction. The carbonization treatment of the ZIF-8/PAN precursor endows material with hierarchical pores and a highly conductive network, which significantly increases the specific surface area and active sites and provides a fast electron transport channel for electrochemical reactions. Moreover, the synergistic effect of MoS 2 /MoO 2 optimizes the ion transport pathway and further enhances the electrocatalytic performance. Experimental results show that the electrode exhibites excellent performance for the simultaneous detection of DA and UA. The linear range for DA detection is 0.5–35 µM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.038 µM (S/ N = 3), while UA shows a two-segment linear response with linear ranges of 1–20 µM and 20–110 µM, respectively, and a LOD of 0.245 µM (S/ N = 3). This electrode is capable of realizing the simultaneous detection of DA and UA in human serum, showing a broad application prospect in the field of biosensing.

Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for the synthesis of ammonia (NH 3 ) is one of the green and mild methods of artificial nitrogen fixation, promising as an alternative to replace the existing industrial process. Under the requirements of green chemistry and sustainable development, the design and development of highly active and stable electrocatalysts is very important for improved synthesis performance. Mimicking from the natural nitrogenase, Fe and Mo based catalysts have attracted much attention due to their superior catalytic performance for N 2 adsorption and activation. In this work, an interfacial engineering strategy has been used to prepare a Fe, Mo-bimetallic electrocatalyst for the electrosynthesis of NH 3 . In detail, the pre-pyrolyzed biochar-based Fe 2 O 3 composites were decorated with nano-flowered MoS 2 /MoO 2 hybrids by a solvothermal process (MoS 2 /MoO 2 @Fe 2 O 3 /BC). As confirmed by the extensive characterization, the further modification not only introduced functional counterparts into the electrocatalysts but also regulated the morphology of the nanostructure. The electrochemical tests showed that the highest NH 3 yield rate of MoS 2 /MoO 2 @Fe 2 O 3 /BC was 4.87 μg h − 1 cm −2 and highest FE was 16.5% in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 . The catalytic stability and durability were also presented in the longtime electrolysis and cycling experiments. The improved catalytic performance of decorated catalyst, as evidenced by the comparison with Fe 2 O 3 /BC, is attributed to the increased electrocatalytic active area, the moderated hydrophilicity, and the synergistic effect of Fe, Mo-bimetallic active sites. This study provides a new perspective for the design and development of low-cost transition metal complexes as electrocatalysts for nitrogen reduction reactions.
