Hydrodynamics Coupled Simulation of Fingerlike Pore Formation During Nonsolvent Induced Phase Separation

Xintao Deng,Yingpeng Zhao,Fuyuan Yang,Yangyang Li,Minggao Ouyang

The finger-like pore (FP) is one of the most important phenomena in the fabrication of membranes via nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS), as the performance of most functional membrane is heavily dependent on the appropriate regulation of the FPs. However, the mechanisms governing the initiation and growth of FPs are still not fully understood, and their regulation often relies on empirical knowledge and practice. This study presents the development of a hydrodynamics-coupled phase-field model that reproduces the process of FP initiation and parallel growth from the dense skin layer. The evolution process of the finger morphology and the impact of various manufacturing parameters are investigated. Optical observations are conducted and compared with simulated morphologies under different parameter conditions, revealing that the simulations mirrored the effects of these parameters, as seen in actual processes.

Preparation of ultrafiltration membranes based on carbon dioxide adsorption-desorption assisted NIPS phase transition

Saihui Zhang,Ziqi Li,Benqiao He,Kun Jing,Ligang Lin,Feng Yan,Huiqin An,Jie Pan

CO 2 bubble-assisted nonsolvent-induced phase inversion separation (NIPS) technique has demonstrated remarkable advantages in fabricating ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with high porosity and narrow pore size distribution. In this study, an improved CO 2 bubble-assisted NIPS was developed by incorporating polyethyleneimine (PEI) into the casting solution to form a homogeneous single-phase system, thereby avoiding the aggregation issues commonly associated with using CaCO 3 as the CO 2 foaming source. The freshly cast nascent membrane was exposed to a CO 2 atmosphere, allowing rapid CO 2 adsorption by the surface PEI layer, followed by immersion in an acidic coagulation bath to trigger prompt CO 2 desorption. By tuning the CO 2 adsorption and desorption conditions, the phase separation dynamics and membrane pore morphology were effectively regulated. The resulting membrane exhibited a surface porosity of 14.7%, a narrow pore size distribution, and an average pore diameter of approximately 10.5 nm. The influence of factors such as the casting solution solvent type and temperature, CO 2 adsorption time, and coagulation bath pH on the membrane structure was investigated. The membrane formation mechanism was analyzed based on SEM surface morphology with XPS. The fabricated membrane exhibited excellent performance, with a pure water permeance of 653.1 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 and a high rejection rate of 98.5% toward bovine serum albumin. This work provides an effective strategy for fabricating UF membranes with high porosity and narrow pore size distribution.

NIPS-triggered in situ crystallization of ZIF-8/PES composite membranes for H2/CO2 separation

Zhongmin Feng,Zheng Wang,Li-hua Qi,Sijie Yun,Chuang Zu,Ling Huang,Shengping Wang,Huanting Wang

Gas separation using metal organic framework (MOF) membranes has attracted considerable attention in recent years. Despite the progress made, establishing thin, defect-free MOF layers within the porous polymer remains a significant challenge. In this study, a novel approach is reported for the preparation of ZIF-8/Polyethersulfone (ZIF-8/PES) composite membranes via non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS)-triggered in-situ crystallization strategy. In this method, PES serves as a solid solvent for Zn(NO 3 ) 2 . During the NIPS process, an asymmetric PES membrane with a skin layer, finger-like pores, and interconnected foam structures is formed. Concurrently, Zn(NO 3 ) 2 diffuses to the skin layer and reacts with 2-methylimidazole (2-MIM), yielding a dense ZIF-8 layer on the PES surface. The simultaneous nucleation and growth of ZIF-8 within the polymer create strong interfacial interactions at the organic-inorganic interface. These interactions improve the compatibility between ZIF-8 and the polymer matrix, reduce interfacial defects. As a result, the composite membrane exhibits enhanced mechanical stability. When the crystallization time is extended to 48 h, the thickness of the ZIF-8 layer reaches approximately 540 nm, and the membrane exhibits an H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 72.3 ± 3.35 at 298 K. This study provides a facile and effective route for constructing thin MOF membranes on polymeric matrix for high-performance gas separation.

TIPS-co-NIPS method to prepare PES substrate with enhanced permeability for TFC-FO membrane

Libin Yang,Zhan Wang,Jinglong Zhang,Peng Song,Liping Liu

A thermally induced phase separation followed by non-solvent induced phase separation (TIPS-co-NIPS) was used to prepare polyethersulfone (PES) substrate with reduced internal concentration polarization (ICP) for thin film composite forward osmosis (TFC-FO) membrane. Using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the additive, impacts of TIPS process on substrate properties, TFC layers and FO performances were investigated. The results revealed that the substrate prepared by TIPS-co-NIPS method with 10 s cooling time showed a fully finger-like structure, enhanced permeation performance and better surface hydrophilicity. As a result, the corresponding TFC-FO membrane exhibited 44% lower structural parameter than the TFC-FO membrane based on NIPS substrate (684 µm versus 380 µm), high water fluxes up to 32.9/20.4 LMH and reverse salt fluxes of 14.1/8.2 gMH in the PRO/FO mode using 1 M NaCl as the draw against DI-water feed. Therefore, the proposed TIPS-co-NIPS method utilizing PEG as the additive may be considered as a feasible approach to regulate substrate structure and property for TFC-FO membrane.

Synthesis and characterization of novel zwitterionic poly(aryl ether oxadiazole) ultrafiltration membrane with good antifouling and antibacterial properties

Hanxiang Guo,Zhaofeng Wang,Yang Liu,Pengfei Huo,Jiyou Gu,Fangbo Zhao

Notably, zwitterionic polymers have attracted increasing attention to various potential applications in membrane-based separation processes on account of the good biocompatibility, superior antifouling and excellent antimicrobial property. In this contribution, a novel membrane material based on zwitterionic poly(aryl ether oxadiazole) (Z-PAEO) was designed and synthesized by a facile and convenient two-step route consist of polycondensation and quaternary amination reaction. Z-PAEO ultrafiltration membrane was subsequently fabricated by the scalable non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The chemical structures and compositions of these prepared polymers were determined by using 1 H NMR, FTIR and XPS measurements, and their inherent viscosities, molecular weights, thermal properties and solubility behaviors were extensively characterized, respectively. The presence of zwitterionic groups considerably improved the porosity, pore size and hydrophilicity of Z-PAEO membrane, which was helpful to the permeability of the obtained membrane without obviously affecting the protein rejection. Interestingly and significantly, the as-prepared Z-PAEO membrane displayed superior and persistent antifouling performance as well as antibacterial property. The water flux recovery ratio of Z-PAEO membrane (97.6%) after a three-cycles of BSA solution filtration was much higher than that of the reference PAEO membrane (78.4%), suggesting excellent long-term performance stability. It can be expected that developing novel zwitterionic polymers can significantly expand the application scopes of separation membrane .

Fabrication of hierarchically porous Cu/PVDF/CeO2 membranes via synergistic NIPS-spraying for robust oil-water separation

Junjie Zhang,Jiayuan Xu,Jijun Ding,Haixia Chen

High-efficiency oil-water separation membranes based on low-mesh copper mesh offer advantages in cost-effectiveness, scalability, and adaptability to complex separation scenarios. However, their inherently large pore size usually results in insufficient separation precision. In this work, the Cu/PVDF/CeO 2 composite membrane is fabricated on the copper mesh substrate by combining the non-solvent induced phase separation method with spraying and immersion techniques. By adjusting the porogen content, the pore size of the composite membrane is effectively regulated, leading to enhanced separation efficiency. This strategy aims to simultaneously achieve superhydrophobicity and high-precision oil-water separation on low-mesh-number copper mesh substrates. The Cu/PVDF/CeO 2 composite membrane achieves a maximum water contact angle of 158.7°, exhibiting superhydrophobicity. In oil-water separation tests, the membrane demonstrates a separation efficiency exceeding 98.5% for all tested oil-water mixtures. Optimal performance is observed in the separation of the immiscible mixture of dichloromethane and water, where the membrane achieves a separation efficiency of 99.83% alongside a high separation flux of 79138.4 L m −2 ·h −1 . Additionally, the composite membrane exhibits excellent long-term stability and cycling stability. This study provides a feasible method for the preparation of high-efficiency oil-water separation composite membranes based on copper mesh substrates, with potential applications in industrial wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Synergistic hydrolysis, coordination and hydrogen bond interactions in NIPS for underwater superoleophobic mesh-based oil/water separation

Yuxiang Liu,Yuchen Li,Congying He,Xin Yue,Shiming Hu,Hongyi Wang,Niaz Ali Khan,Chao Yang,Mengying Long

Constructing a durable, high-flux, and fouling-resistant coating on metal meshes without compromising their structural integrity remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report a novel non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) strategy that enables the synchronous occurrence of antimony trichloride hydrolysis, metal–polyphenol coordination, and PVP–TA hydrogen bonding during membrane formation, realizing collaborative interface engineering of membrane formation and functionalization in a single step. The synergistic effect leads to the in situ growth of a robust superhydrophilic network on the metal mesh without destroying the substrate. The resulting membrane achieves a high flux (8000 L m−2 h−1) under gravity, along with excellent underwater self-cleaning ability and chemical stability. This work provides an efficient, time-saving, and economical method to prepare high flux and underwater self-cleaning wire mesh oil–water separation membranes.

Formation of hydrophobic membranes by surface spray assisted NIPS: Effects of solvent/non-solvent and spraying conditions

Meng-Chao Yu,Xiaojie Xu,Tao Wang,Ying-Nan Feng,Zhi-Ping Zhao

Membrane distillation has long been a potential desalination technology. Recently, spray-assisted non-solvent induced phase inversion (SANIPS) was proposed as a facile and effective method to prepare microporous hydrophobic membranes for membrane distillation. However, the membrane formation process is not fully disclosed. In this paper, SANIPS is employed to fabricate hydrophobic PVDF membranes. The influencing factors on membrane structure and performance are investigated. Membrane structure is greatly affected by the choice of solvent and non-solvent spray. The interactions between different non-solvent sprays (water and ethanol) and solvents (TEP, NMP and DMF) and the effects of operating conditions on membrane formation are explored. Thermodynamic and kinetic analyses of the membrane formation process suggest that the membrane formation process is dominated by the kinetic factors with water being the spray while thermodynamic factors play the major role with ethanol being the spray. A hydrophobic membrane with water contact angle of 135.93 ± 4.38° and LEP of 2.5 ± 0.4 bar was successfully prepared by using ethanol as the non-solvent spray, which demonstrates a stable desalination performance (initial flux of 19.88 ± 1.39 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and salt rejection higher than 99.97 %) in vacuum membrane distillation. This study may provide pertinent insights into the rational control of membrane structure and performance of hydrophobic PVDF membranes.

Preparation of Lateral Flow PVDF Membrane via Combined Vapor- and Non-Solvent-Induced Phase Separation (V-NIPS)

Xiaoyun Wang,Dejian Chen,Ting He,Yue Zhou,Li Tian,Zhaohui Wang,Zhaoliang Cui

A large pore size Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane was prepared by the V-NIPS method using PVDF/N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc)/Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)/Polyethylene glycol (PEG) system. Firstly, the effect of different additive ratios on the membrane morphology and pore size was studied, and it was found that when the PVP:PEG ratio was 8:2, PVDF membranes with a relatively large pore size tend to be formed; the pore size is about 7.5 µm. Then, the effects of different exposure time on the membrane morphology and pore size were investigated, and it was found that as the vapor temperature increased, the pores on the surface of the membrane first became slightly smaller and then increased. Finally, the effects of different vapor temperatures on the membrane properties were discussed. The results showed that the as-prepared membrane exhibited suitable capillary flow rate and similar performance compared with a commercially available membrane in colloidal gold tests. The likely cause is that the amount of negative charge is less and the capillary migration rate is too fast. This paper provides a reference for the preparation of PVDF colloidal gold detection membrane. Keywords:Poly(vinylidene fluoride);vapor non-solvent-induced phase separation;detection of colloidal gold;capillary flow rate

Effect of coagulation bath on selective separation of PEI-PEG1000 methane dehydration membrane

Xiaocan Zhang,Shuangyong Qing,Xuesong Li,Tiantian Li,Ying Zhang

In order to prepare high-performance natural gas dehydration membranes, effects of coagulation bath were studied during a non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) process. Specifically, concentrations of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and polyethylene glycol 1000 (PEG 1000) were investigated respectively on the structure and properties of polyetherimide (PEI)-PEG1000 blend membranes. Studies have shown that both coagulation baths, namely, NMP and PEG1000, can affect membrane structures and improve the overall separation performance of the blend membranes. The presence of NMP in the coagulation bath formed a dissolution equilibrium with the membrane to modify the membrane structure and slow down the rate of phase separation, and the separation coefficient was 151.8 with 8% NMP. With the increase of PEG1000 concentration in the coagulation bath, the hydrophilicity of the membrane enhanced, and a separation coefficient of 585.7 was reached at 10% PEG1000.

Tuning ionic channels in carbon-binder domains of carbon-based electrodes via nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method

Jiaxin Li,Xin Chen,Yue Cao,Jie Du,Jiajun Gu,Qinglei Liu

The design of ionic channels can effectively alleviate ion diffusion limitations in electrodes for supercapacitors, thereby enhancing the performance of energy storage devices. However, few methods have been reported that can tailor ionic channels of electrodes with binders. Herein, we report a nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) strategy to regulate ionic channels within carbon-binder domains (CBD) of carbon-based electrodes. By systematically analyzing the thermodynamics of different NIPS systems, we established several design principles for tailoring ionic channel structures in CBD. Electrodes with pore sizes ranging from 304 to 740 nm in the CBD and porosities from 0.45 to 1.46 cm 3  g −1 are obtained. The capacitive performance of these electrodes in different electrolytes is strongly dependent on the characteristics of the resulting ionic channel structures in CBD. In aqueous electrolytes, high specific surface area (SSA) and well-developed ionic channels in CBD are critical for enhancing electrode capacitive performance. However, in ionic liquid electrolytes, porosity rather than SSA governs the capacitive performance. This work offers a simple and versatile approach for regulating ionic channels in electrode systems with binders.

Fabrication of Loose Nanofiltration Membranes with High Rejection Selectivity between Natural Organic Matter and Salts for Drinking Water Treatment

Zhihai He,Kunpeng Wang,Yanling Liu,Ting Zhang,Xiaomao Wang

Loose nanofiltration (LNF) membranes with a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of about 1000 Da and high surface negative charge density have great application potential for drinking water treatment pursuing high rejection selectivity between natural organic matter (NOM) and mineral salts. This study was conducted to exploit the novel method coupling non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) and interfacial polymerization (IP) for the preparation of high-performance LNF membranes. A number of LNF membranes were synthesized by varying the polyethersulfone (PES) and piperazine (PIP) concentrations in the cast solution for the PES support layer preparation. Results showed that these two conditions could greatly affect the membrane water permeance, MWCO and surface charge. One LNF membrane, with a water permeance as high as 23.0 ± 1.8 L/m2/h/bar, when used for the filtration of conventional process-treated natural water, demonstrated a rejection of NOM higher than 70% and a low rejection of mineral salts at about 20%. Both the mineral salts/NOM selectivity and permselectivity were superior to the currently available LNF membranes as far as the authors know. This study demonstrated the great advantage of the NIPS–IP method for the fabrication of LNF membranes, particularly for the advanced treatment of drinking water. Keywords:loose nanofiltration (LNF);non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS);interfacial polymerization (IP);water treatment;natural organic matter (NOM);rejection selectivity
