A method on the induction of piezoelectricity of PVDF by NaOH: Induced PVDF as ultrafiltration base membrane in interfacial polymerization to enhance the rejection of NaCl

Yuliang Chen,Wenmin Wang,Ying Liang,Chen Chen,Rui Meng,Libo Ba,Yuliang Wu,Yijiang Liu,Weiwei Huang,Fei Yang,Jun Cheng,Xuesong Yi

Nanofiltration technology has garnered significant attention due to its potential to address global water scarcity. However, the low rejection rates of monovalent salts, such as NaCl, have limited the broader application of nanofiltration membranes. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) powder was chemically modified by a saturated sodium hydroxide solution to the formation of a phase transition from the non-polar α-phase to the polar β-phase. The NaOH treatment promoted this phase transition by disrupting the crystal structure and enhancing molecular polarity, thereby inducing piezoelectric properties in the membrane. The modified PVDF was then formed as ultrafiltration substrate to fabricate a nanofiltration membrane with a dual-layer charge structure through surface charge-regulated interfacial polymerization. The NaOH-induced chemical modifications significantly improved both piezoelectric effect and ion rejection performance. The Piezo-PVDF nanofiltration membrane exhibited a 60 % rejection rate for 1 g/L NaCl, with an optimal water flux of 13.5 L m 2  h −1  bar −1 . This study demonstrates how NaOH-induced phase transition and piezoelectric activation optimize charge distribution across the membrane, leading to enhanced desalination performance. These findings provide new insights into the chemical mechanisms driving PVDF membrane modification and offer a strong theoretical and experimental foundation for the development of efficient and cost-effective desalination technologies.

Increasing the performance of reverse osmosis membranes via the interfacial copolymerization of β-cyclodextrin with m-phenylenediamine/trimesoyl chloride

Yanyan Zhao,Shuhao Wang,Zhuan Yi,Yong Zhou,Congjie Gao

A novel β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/polyamide film reverse osmosis (RO) membrane was prepared by in situ interfacial polymerization via mixing β-CD with m-phenylenediamine in the aqueous phase prior to reaction with trimesoyl chloride. The effects of the β-CD concentration on the morphology and separation performance of the RO membrane were studied. β-CD was employed to improve the pure water flux of the membrane. When the concentration of β-CD in aqueous solution was 1.5% (w/v), both the rejection of NaCl and the pure water flux were maintained at a high level. In this case, water flux of the β-CD-modified RO membrane was nearly1.52 times that of the β-CD-free polyamide membrane. This increase might have been caused by the high concentration of β-CD hydrophilic hydroxyl groups, which appeared to directly improve the performance of the composite film. In addition, the unique properties of the resulting membrane, including the loosely cross-linked structure formed by β-CD and the polyamide film, the intramolecular cavity existed in β-CD and the affinity of β-CD to water molecules, was ascribed as the reasons for the improved performance of higher permeability.

Incorporating functionalized acyl chloride monomer with rigid pyrrolidinyl group via two-step interfacial polymerization for improving permeability of reverse osmosis membranes

Xiaojuan Wang,Kuisuo Yang,Huacheng Xu,Yijun Huang,Congjie Gao,Xueli Gao

Novel acyl chloride monomer 5-(1-pyrrolidinyl)-1,3-benzenedicarbonyl dichloride (PIPC) featuring a rigid pyrrolidinyl group was proposed as an organic phase monomer to fabricate reverse osmosis (RO) membranes possessing exceptional water permeability and NaCl rejection via a two-step interfacial polymerization method. First, m -phenylenediamine (MPD) in the aqueous phase solution polymerized with PIPC in the first organic phase solution to form the much looser polyamide . After that the remaining MPD continued to diffuse to polymerize with trimesoyl chloride in the second organic phase solution to form the denser polyamide. The pyrrolidinyl group had steric hindrance effects and formed hydrogen bond with MPD, leading to decreasing the thickness significantly and increasing surface roughness of the separating layer. When the PIPC amount was 0.08 wt%, the PIPC-based RO membrane displayed optimal permselectivity with water flux increasing by 84.20 % compared to the original RO membrane (from 20.38 L·m −2 ·h −1 to 37.54 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) whereas retaining high NaCl rejection with 98.59 %. The PIPC-based RO membrane exhibited steady water flux and NaCl rejection within 120 h of filtration, as well as improved antifouling performance. Thus, preparation of the highly permeable RO membrane could be rationally achieved by the novel acyl chloride monomer with a rigid pyrrolidinyl group.

Fast polydopamine coating on reverse osmosis membrane: Process investigation and membrane performance study

Jianqiang Wang,Hao Guo,Xiaonan Shi,Zhikan Yao,Weihua Qing,Fu Liu,Chuyang Y. Tang

We report a novel membrane surface modification method using a fast polydopamine coating (fPDAc) strategy. Specifically, NaIO 4 was introduced in the coating process to accelerate the polydopamine deposition rate . Surface properties and separation performances of fPDAc-coated reverse osmosis membranes were characterized and compared to those obtained using the conventional slow polydopamine coating (sPDAc) strategy. Quartz crystal microbalance measurements showed greatly increased polydopamine deposition rate using the fPDAc method, resulting in a reduction of 97% coating time to reach an areal mass of 2000 ng/cm 2 . Both fPDAc and sPDAc enhanced the surface hydrophilicity and reduced the membrane surface charge. At relatively low areal mass deposition (<1000 ng/cm 2 ), fPDAc-coated membranes showed improved NaCl rejection together with only mild loss of pure water flux. Nevertheless, this rejection enhancement effect was not noticeable when extensive polydopamine coating was applied due to the undesirable cake-enhanced concentration polarization effect. The extensive polydopamine coating was further accompanied with severe loss of membrane permeability, suggesting that shorter coating time (e.g., 4 min) is preferred using the fPDAc method. Our study provides a more rapid and effective membrane surface coating method compared to the conventional sPDAc method.

High throughput polyamide-hydrazide reverse osmosis membrane mediated by dynamic covalent interlayer

Zhongyang Wang,Siheng Zhao,Muhammad Adnan Akram,Kuo Chen,Shengchao Zhao,Lihua Zhao,Zhiyu Liu,Q. Jason Niu

Reverse osmosis (RO) is the preferred technology for seawater and brackish water desalination. The ongoing pursuit of scientific research and industrial innovation aims to develop high-performance RO membranes. An effective approach to enhancing the performance of composite RO membranes is the use of interlayers. To simplify the construction process of the interlayer and improve its regulation effect on the interfacial polymerization process, we propose a construction scheme for an in-situ dynamic covalent interlayer. By adding glutaraldehyde (GA) to the aqueous solution containing cyclobutane tetraformylhydrazide (CBTH), we successfully synthesized a crosslinked acylhydrazone interlayer onto a polysulfone (PSF) substrate during the aqueous coating stage to optimize the interfacial polymerization process. In the early stage of interfacial polymerization, the crosslinked acylhydrazone interlayer can bind the amine monomer, preventing the initial polyamide layer from becoming too dense and creating a self-regulating mechanism. In the later stages, it continuously supplies amine monomers to the reaction zone, compensating for defects in the polyamide layer and establishing a self-perfection mechanism. The in-situ simultaneous dynamic covalent interlayer increased the permeation flux of the CBTH-TMC membrane by 3 times (4.0 L m −2  h −1 ⋅bar −1 ) with NaCl rejection of 99.14 % by effectively controlling the membrane formation process. This approach demonstrates advantages in simplicity and operability, successfully overcoming the "trade-off" limitation of original polyamide-hydrazide membranes.

N-(3-Aminopropyl)-imidazole modified polyamide reverse osmosis membrane for improved permeability and selectivity

Yingying Liu,Wanjing Cui,Xiuge Chen,Ming Wang,Haifeng Zhang,Zhi Wang

Reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology is applied widely on the water desalinization for relieving the challenge of freshwater scarcity. Polyamide (PA) membranes with superior water flux and rejection in the RO process are currently in high demand. In this study, a novel reactive additive N-(3-Aminopropyl)-imidazole (N-IM) was utilized to optimize the interfacial polymerization (IP) process and enhance PA-RO membrane performance. N-IM made the nascent film more porous and created an RO membrane with a thicker PA separation layer. The modified membrane exhibited a more hydrophilic surface, ascribing to more carboxylic acid groups. This membrane exhibited an improved water flux, increasing from 59.67 L/(m 2 ∙h) of original membrane to 82.76 L/(m 2 ∙h) of the modified membrane with the addition of 0.5 % w/v N-IM concentration, which was attributed to the enhanced hydrophilicity and increased water trapping capacity provided by the imidazole ring in N-IM. Additionally, the NaCl rejection increased from 98.75 % to 98.97 %, which can be attributed to the thicker separation layer and more carboxylic acid groups. In addition, the membrane showed excellent stability of performance and good pH stability. The study presents a novel approach to producing RO membranes with exceptional performance.

Structure regulation for synergistically improving the permeation properties of the reverse osmosis membrane based on an amphiphilic hyperbranched polymer

Rui-Han Li,Yang Li,Hao Wu,Wen-Tao Yan,Chun-Yang Yu,Li-Fen Liu,Cong-Jie Gao

The aromatic polyamide (PA) thin film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membrane has been widely used in the desalination processes to settle the global water crisis. To further decrease the desalination cost, in this work, an amphiphilic hyperbranched polymer of HBPO-star-PEO-COCl with abundant end groups of acyl chloride and core-shell hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase separation structure was synthesized and used as the functional nanomaterial to modify the conventional polyamide TFC RO membrane through interfacial crosslinking reaction. The modified RO membrane with 0.005% HBPO-star-PEO-COCl presents the optimal structure and permeation properties. Its PA layer becomes thinner and denser, and its water flux reaches 69.8LMH nearly double that of the original membrane (33.27LMH), at the same time, its NaCl rejection rate reaches 99.22% higher than that of the original membrane. It can attribute to the unique amphiphilic core-shell structure of HBPO-star-PEO-COCl. On the one hand, the PEO shell of HBPO-star-PEO-COCl is highly hydrophilic while the internal HBPO is highly hydrophobic and collapses easily in water to form a three-dimensional quasi-spherical structure, which leads to the formation of the core-shell two-phase interface, thereby facilitating the water molecules to rapidly pass through the PA layer along the hydrophobic wall surface. On the other hand, the end acly chloride groups of HBPO-star-PEO-COCl take part in the crosslinking reaction, which makes the PA layer have higher crosslinking degree and become denser, thereby enhancing the salt retention. Therefore, this study provides an effective way to fabricate a new reverse osmosis composite membrane with favorable comprehensive separation performance based on amphiphilic hyperbranched polymer.

Chemical grafting N-GOQD of polyamide reverse osmosis membrane with improved chlorine resistance, water flux and NaCl rejection

Zhan Yi,Feifei Shao,Liyan Yu,Na Song,Hongzhou Dong,Beili Pang,Jianhua Yu,Jianguang Feng,Lifeng Dong

Poor chlorine resistance shortens service life of polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis membrane . Here, nitrogen-doped graphene oxide quantum dots (N-GOQDs) were firstly applied to graft on PA membrane surface . Most grafting experiments are often accompanied by a decrease in water flux . In this study, the flux of the grafted membrane can be increased compared with commercial pristine membranes . Also, all modified membranes show better chlorine resistance than pristine ones. Specifically, N-GOQDs are integrated onto polyamide membranes through grafting method. Comprehensive regulation of chlorine resistance and desalination performance can be achieved by changing grafting conditions. For example, under the conditions of 12 h grafting time and 0.002 mg/mL of N-GOQD solution, water flux, NaCl rejection, and chlorine resistance of the modified membrane are improved by 11.1%, 2.3% and 32.8% after 280 h chlorine soaking respectively. FTIR analyses show that hydrogen bonded C O groups can be observed in the N-GOQD grafted membrane after chlorine tests, but they are destroyed and weakened in pristine membranes, which indicates that the modified membrane has better resistance to reactive chlorine.

Incorporation of dendritic silica nanoparticles for the preparation of high-performance thin-film nanocomposite membranes

Huawei Huang,Yiwen Hu,Xiuduo Song,Jian Kang,Dandan Chen

The development of thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes with high performance is conducive to efficient desalination and wastewater treatment. In this work, dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DLSiO 2 ) were synthesized by a dual-templating strategy. Afterward, they were introduced into the aqueous phase to fabricate TFN membranes via in situ interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction. Powerful techniques as scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Nano zetasizer-DLS, x-ray photoelectron microscopy, electrokinetic analyzer, and contact angle were used in the characterization of dendritic structures and nanocomposite membranes. Results revealed that DLSiO 2 with special structural characteristics can effectively regulate the IP process, promoting the enhancement of the crosslinking degree, surface hydrophilicity, and surface negative charge of polyaimde (PA) selective layers. It is also beneficial for constructing extra water channels within the PA selective layer to boost the transport of water molecules. As a consequence, the prepared TFN membrane with 0.3 mg/mL DLSiO 2 exhibits optimal separation performance and good pressure resistance, acid–base resistance, and anti-fouling properties. It also exhibited a water permeability of 4.17 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 (increased by 61.7% compared with thin film composites (TFC) membrane) and a NaCl rejection of 99.0%, which were better than those of TFN membranes prepared by introducing other types of silica in other studies.

Tailoring the asymmetric structure of polyamide reverse osmosis membrane with self-assembled aromatic nanoparticles for high-efficient removal of organic micropollutants

Yan-Li Ji,Hong-Hao Lu,Bing-Xin Gu,Run-Feng Ye,Yong Zhou,Quan-Fu An,Cong-Jie Gao

The widespread occurrence of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in water has serious effects on the environment and human health. Recently, reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology has been used for resolving this emerging concern, and the state-of-the-art polyamide RO membranes are normally fabricated by the interfacial polymerization method. Further reducing the energy consumption and operation cost, developing high-performance polyamide RO membranes will be the key for resolving the issue of effective removal of OMPs. Herein, a new strategy is proposed for fabricating robust and high-efficient polyamide RO membranes via the self-assembled aromatic nanoparticles (SANs) controlled interfacial polymerization (SANCIP) method. The membrane surface characteristics and interior microstructures of polyamide layer could be conveniently manipulated by regulating the SAN nanoparticles size and content. The SANs tuned polyamide membrane (PAM-SAN) with asymmetric structure, e.g., much looser and crumpled front surface and much denser and smooth rear surface, exhibits ultra-high water flux ~ 67.8 L∙m −2 ∙h −1 and satisfactory NaCl rejection (>98.3%), as well as very high OMPs rejection (>99.4%). Moreover, the PAM-SAN membrane has good stability and anti-fouling performance in long-term RO running process. This facile and cost-effective strategy provides a useful guideline in designing high-performance polyamide membranes with a vast potential in the removal of OMPs for advanced water treatment.

Polyamide-poly (ionic liquid) reverse osmosis membrane with manifold excellent performance prepared via bionic capillary network for seawater desalinization

Xipeng Song,Chao Wang,Shuangshuang Li,Hongpeng Liu,Chunhua Zhang

The trade-off between permeability and selectivity is a substantial impediment to the application of polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. To overcome this problem, we prepared a high-performance PA-poly(ionic liquid) (PIL, poly(1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate)) RO membrane by two-step polymerization. An interpenetrating network structure of PA-PIL with water transmembrane channels was constructed based on hydrophilic PIL chains, similar capillary networks scattered throughout bodily tissue. Compared to the primary RO membrane, the water contact angle of the PA-PIL membrane decreased from 67.7° to 40.1°, and the water flux increased by nearly 50% at 15.5 bar. The membrane benefited from the electrostatic repulsion between the imidazole cations and sodium ions , and the NaCl rejection rates increased from 97.3% to 99.2%. More importantly, the PA-PIL membrane exhibited excellent antifouling and antimicrobial properties and long-term separation stability owing to the antibacterial activities of the imidazole structure in PIL and the smooth membrane surface. The excellent performance of PA-PIL modified membranes make them potentially very useful in seawater desalinization and other areas.

Enhancing Permeability of Thin Film Nanocomposite Membranes via Covalent Linking of Polyamide with the Incorporated Metal–Organic Frameworks

Hengrao Liu,Jing Gao,Guanhua Liu,Miyu Zhang,Yanjun Jiang

Thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were invented in 2007 to enhance the permeability of thin film composite (TFC) membranes. Surface modification of nanofillers was a common method to improve the interaction and compatibility at polymer/nanofiller interfaces. Accordingly, as an amino-functionalized zirconium-based metal–organic framework (MOF), UiO-66-NH2 was synthesized and introduced into the preparation of TFN membranes via interfacial polymerization in this study. The superhydrophilic characteristic of UiO-66-NH2 made it possible to be well dispersed in aqueous solution and the amino groups on particle surfaces could react with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid chloride (TMC) to form covalent interaction with polymer thus inhibiting the formation of nonselective defects at PA/nanofiller interfaces. The morphology images and FT-IR spectra revealed the PA selective layer successfully formed on the top of hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) supports. The EDX characterization demonstrated UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles were successfully introduced into the TFN membranes. The UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles increased the surface hydrophilicity and roughness of the membranes, and provided additional passageways for mass transfer. Pure water permeability increased from 6.89 LMH/bar for TFC membrane to 14.55 LMH/bar for TFN-0.10 membrane indicating the distinct permeability elevation after the incorporation of UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles. And the Na2SO4 rejection of TFN-0.10 membrane was up to about 99.0% and NaCl rejection was 38.1% at 4 bar, which was higher than that of TFN membrane incorporated with pristine UiO-66.
